Plot twists - and then some
augustian6 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Chameleons: Not the Sequel may not be a follow-n from John Leslie's earlier, The Chameleon but it shares the same shape-shifting type characters, but this time they can morph into the opposite sex, which can be quite confusing unless you watch very closely. In fact, it is good that this film is available on DVD so that it can be run backwards and forwards to realise what has happened - something I have found necessary to do several times while viewing it. This shows that there is a well written plot and good production values.

The film opens with a strange scene at a night club in which a man is seemingly threatened by a group but he is then straddled by one of the women until he climaxes. If that was supposed to be punishment, then bring it on! It gets weirder after that. It seems that these shape-shifters can assume different identities after they have had sex with their intended victims. Even at the end you are still left wondering if what you see is really what is meant to be.

Deidre Holland as Claudine is absolutely stunning in this film as is her rival, or should that be co-conspirator, Ashlyn Gere. John Leslie has written a film that could stand on its own without the hard porn but as the old saying goes, it is necessary to the plot. I just wish there was a bit more playfulness to the sex but watching this shows what hard core porn is all about, especially Ashlyn and Deidre being pounded from the rear by Rocco Siffredi - classic.

Solid shot-on-film endeavor; one of John Leslie's best

John Leslie's Chameleons (full title: Chameleons: Not the Sequel) is an adult film that only a true auteur like Leslie could succeed at (I could see someone like Paul Thomas attempt to do a film like this, but not deliver on the sex). In one of these rare adult films, we have a film with a substantial plot, good production values, quality performances (especially by Ashlyn Gere; although it is a bit hard to understand Rocco Siffredi at times, a wonderful soundtrack and scorching sex. In other words, Chameleons is the kind of film that every adult film should aspire to be. For those familiar with John Leslie's 1989 video Chameleon this film is indirectly related with people who can transform shape, form, and even sex to fulfill their sexual appetites. The plot is also similar to the 1983 Tony Scott film The Hunger. I don't want to reveal too many plot details but the film is basically a love triangle between wealthy couple Claudine (the exquisite Deidre Holland) and Reynaldo (Rocco Siffredi) and the abrasive Casey (Ashlyn Gere), who becomes obsessed with them after meeting them in a sex club. The film eventually becomes a battle of wits of who's fooling who to the point where even the viewer isn't sure. The late John Leslie had a reputation of being the first person to successfully transition over from actor to director and this film is a perfect example of why. Every shot of the film demonstrates that Leslie was a true auteur and in my humble opinion, is only second to Henry Paris (Radley Metzger) in making adult films that can stand on their own without the sex (although that is certainly watchable as well). If pressed for my favorite John Leslie movie this would easily be my choice and if pressed for my favorite adult film ever made it, I think I would have to settle on a tie between this and The Opening of Misty Beethoven.

# 34 : indeed it's a bit like the Hunger

My first feeling with this movie was to realize how porn before WWW was different than now: at this time, porn was material (tapes, magazines) so the access was limited and only the ones who were courageous to ask gets it! The reverse was true: the girls were motivated to do it and it was not this sort of alternative college it has become today. Anyway, this ghetto production pressures the quality as demonstrated in this movie!

My second feeling about it was to be surprised it being a winner! From the preview, it didn't look so different! And I was wrong because a preview is not a movie and if there is indeed a plot inside it, you will miss it! So here it's almost a supernatural porn movie because 2 of the characters can alter their physical appearance (like the animal of the title!)… It's very hard to follow who is who and just for that the movie is good… But there is also a huge psychological play and that's a ingredient essential to good sex… The production is great between a very hot sex club and a cozy Victorian mansion… and for sure, the cast is awesome! Big Ashlyn is amazing when she orders but shows excellent fragility as well and it's the same for beautiful Deidre! It's true that their beauty imprints this feature! As a bonus, PJ (#28) shows her fitness as well!

In conclusion, it's a excellent porn movie because there is not only eroticism or sensuality but something else that mixes well with that, the vampire thematic!
