Gwyneth Paltrow Parties Like ‘The Politician’ to Launch Goop Gift Shop

  • Variety
Like a scene straight out of her campy Netflix drama “The Politician,” Gwyneth Paltrow threw a simple but luxurious bash in Montecito, Calif., last week to trumpet the first-ever hotel collaboration for her lifestyle empire, Goop.

On the streamer’s series co-created by husband Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy, Paltrow plays Santa Barbara matriarch Georgina Hobart, whose deep pockets and unconditional love for her ambitious son (portrayed by Ben Platt) leads the pair to unexpected consequences. There wasn’t nearly as much at stake at Paltrow’s soiree, though both settings could have shared the same set designer.

Dinner was served just south of Santa Barbara at a private estate neighboring those of Oprah Winfrey and Paltrow herself. A mix of fashion types, social influencers and Goop’s own VIP customers gathered for five courses inspired by the sea from David Kinch, the California chef behind Manresa in Los Gatos

Grammys Producer on Aretha Franklin’s Greatest Show Moment and Why She Loathed Air-Conditioning
The very first time that Grammy Awards telecast producer Ken Ehrlich worked with 18-time winner Aretha Franklin was on his second-ever awards ceremony in 1981, the initial one held at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. Franklin sang her nominated song “Can’t Turn You Loose,” which lost out to Stephanie Mills’ “Never Knew Love Like This Before.” Seventeen years later, in 1998, again at Radio City Music Hall, Ehrlich was faced with the last-minute cancellation of Luciano Pavarotti, who was scheduled to sing “Nessum dorma,” the climactic aria from Puccini’s opera “Turandot,” and turned to the Queen of Soul, who had just sung the song a few days prior at the MusiCares Person of the Year dinner honoring the legendary Italian tenor.

There was also the 2011 opening show medley tribute, the last time Franklin was deathly ill, featuring the unlikely combo of Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride,

Top 25 Twenty-First Century Jazz Albums

Today being international jazz day, there will be much celebrating of the greatness of its history. I’ve done that in the past; it is a great history. But it is not all back in historical times; jazz lives, and evolves, and continues to be great. Yet how many lists of the greatest jazz albums include anything from the current century?

Nonetheless, if people are to respect jazz as a living art form, a look back at the best of its more recent releases seems worthwhile. Here’s one man’s “baker’s dozen
