Norby Williamson, the ESPN veteran who has managed everything from NFL coverage to “SportsCenter,” is leaving the Disney sports-media giant abruptly just weeks after being called out on camera in a surprise and unprecedented outburst by daytime host Pat McAfee.
The McAfee contretemps is not at the root of Williamson’s departure, according to a person familiar with the matter, but rather disagreements between the executive and the longer-term strategy being devised by Burke Magnus, who was handed oversight of content and news production in March of last year.
“Almost 40 years ago in 1985, I was so very fortunate to be offered an opportunity at ESPN,: Williamson said in a statement that was issued in a memo to staffers Friday. “Due to the exceptional hard work, creativity and commitment of the people of ESPN, and to a much lesser extent my contributions, I’d like to think we’ve left...

No matter who prevails next Sunday at the NCAA’s championship game, 2024’s March Madness will go down in history as a milestone moment for women’s sports. Not just in the college basketball realm — but for female athletes overall.
In a perfect storm, the annual bracket-bonkers frenzy around the NCAA college basketball tournament has conferred a level of respect to the women’s game that is rarely been seen across sports media, but for the quadrennial exception of the Women’s World Cup. It’s happening this year for all the right reasons – basically, math and gravity. The games have been too good to ignore and the stats put up by such players as the University of Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, Louisiana State University’s Angel Reese, USC’s freshman phenom JuJu Watkins and University of Connecticut’s Paige Bueckers are too eye-popping to not analyze.

Doug Liman’s reboot of the 1980s cult title Road House has clocked 50 million-plus viewers on Prime Video over its first two weekends. There’s a new game launching in the world of sports — wooing more ad dollars to games featuring female athletes.
GroupM, the large media-buying consortium backed by ad giant Wpp, vowed Wednesday to double the amount of money its clients spend on women’s sports in 2024 and said it would seek to create a dedicated marketplace for the programming genre, starting in the industry’s next “upfront” negotiation period. The firm has already secured interest from advertisers including adidas, Ally, Coinbase, Discover, Google, Mars, Nationwide, Unilever and NBCUniversal’s Universal Pictures.
“There is a business opportunity for women’s sports, and we can feel it,” says Denise Ocasio, executive director of investment for GroupM’s U.S. operations, in an interview. One client, Ally, pushed the media buyer last year to consider the effort, which will seek to create new broadcast sponsorships and other types of content packages, as well...

‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Propels Franchise Past $1B As Sequel Opens To $45M+ – Sunday Am Update
Sunday Am: No snowstorm or sour reviews stood in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘s path this weekend, as the Gil Kenan-directed, Jason Reitman-produced sequel minted a $45.2M opening after a nice spike on Saturday from families.
Yesterday came in at $16.8M, 5% ahead of Friday/previews’ $16M. If the numbers hold up, that’s the second-best start ever for a Ghostbusters’ movie after the 2016 female ensemble of Kirsten Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.
The domestic opening of the fifth movie takes the entire Ghostbusters franchise, per Sony, past $1 billion. I understand studio reports had the franchise through four films at $985M, a result that’s higher than Box Office Mojo. Mojo’s numbers on overseas are off on the first 1984 film.
Foreign for Frozen Empire was $16.4M from 7,500+ screens in 25 markets, bringing the global start here to $61.6M on the $100M production.
The opening is solid news,...

Kevin Negandhi may not be the most controversial sports host at ESPN — no one’s heard him slam executives on air or suggest he needs a higher salary — but he is making a name for himself as one of the show-iest. There may be no format or program that Negandhi cannot handle.
Yes, he is best known for co-anchoring the 6 p.m. edition of “Sports Center,” but Negandhi has also become an expected face during ESPN’s coverage of the Rose Bowl parade; the Special Olympics; the NBA Draft,; and college football games on Disney sibling ABC.

In a week packed full of fall premieres, the launches of CBS’ “Survivor” and NBC’s “The Voice” stood out as winners, both behind ABC’s Monday Night Football, of course.
The Eagles vs. Buccaneers game, which kicked off at 7:15 p.m and continued through 10:17 p.m., drew in 13.72 million viewers and a rating of 3.84 in the key broadcast demographic among adults 18-49, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day figures. Spectrum cable customers who woke up to watch “SportsCenter” hoping to catch highlights of last night’s college football action were likely disappointed to see that ESPN was blacked out this morning. A dispute over carriage fees has caused 19 Disney-owned cable channels, as well as retransmission fees for seven ABC owned-and-operated stations across the country to go dark for Spectrum users.
Predictably, both sides are heaping blame on the other for the disagreement. But according to company executive, Spectrum may find itself backed into a corner by the dispute. Charter Communications, which operates the Spectrum cable service, held a conference call with Wall Street investors on Friday to discuss the situation with Disney.
During that call, Charter CEO Chris Winfrey said that the company offered a “hybrid” distribution model to Disney for its channels going forward, one that incorporated both linear TV and streaming. Disney rejected that new plan, and...

Sage Steele, the veteran sportscaster who recently left ESPN after settling a lawsuit with the sports media giant, has accused the late Barbara Walters of assaulting her backstage during an appearance on “The View.”
“It was Barbara, Whoopi [Goldberg] and myself in the dark green room off to the side,” Steele said on an episode of “The Megyn Kelly Show” Thursday. “I was probably about four feet from the wall and the trash can, and Barbara was standing over here in front of me. She just started to back up toward me and looked at me and got close and elbowed me, and it pushed me back into the wall and the trash can. I was like, ‘What did [she] just do to me? As he sits for a Zoom interview with Gold Derby, Bryan Rowland admits he’s a little bit shellshocked to be here, as his career trajectory has been something of a whirlwind. He got his start doing cinematography on documentaries. Then he met Ryan Reynolds, and it led to doing promotional material for the actor. Then he started editing episodes of the docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham” for Reynolds and partner Rob McElhenney orf “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” fame. Suddenly, they ask him to direct an episode on very short notice. Then for Season 2 of “Wrexham,” Reynolds and McElhenney asked Rowland if he could be its showrunner. And finally in July, he received Emmy nominations for both his directing and editing on “Wrexham.” “It’s just been absolutely amazing and terrifying,” Rowland admits, “and very surreal. Updated, July 31: Longtime ESPN NBA announcer Mark Jackson has joined the ranks of on-air talent laid off of late by the network. Almost exactly a month ago, Jackson’s broadcast partner (and former coach) Jeff Van Gundy was among the 20-odd boldfaced names let go by the network. See the list below. Since then, speculation has abounded about Jackson’s fate. That speculation came to an end today.
Previously, June 30: On the same day ESPN ran special extended coverage of player comings and goings during NBA Free Agency, about 20 of the network’s top on-air talent found out they would be on the move, as well.
A person familiar with the cutbacks told Deadline they are unrelated to the multi-round Disney layoffs implemented in recent months. The source indicated that many of those affected by the new cuts have contracts beyond June 30 and will be paid out accordingly,...

ESPN personalities Suzy Kolber, Ashley Brewer and Jordan Cornette were among those taking to social media Friday to reflect on being part of the Disney-backed channel’s layoffs announced earlier in the day.
The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that roughly 20 people were informed Friday that they were let go, with a source saying that the talent cuts were related to financial concerns specific to ESPN and did not stem from larger budget issues for Disney. ESPN veterans Jeff Van Gundy, Max Kellerman, Keyshawn Johnson and Jalen Rose were also among the cuts, according to a source.
Kolber had been with the network since the 1990s and was known for her NFL coverage and having served as an anchor on flagship news program SportsCenter.
“Today I join the many hard-working colleagues who have been laid off,” Kolber tweeted, sharing a photo of herself covering the most recent NFL draft in April.

Max Meyers has at least one firm rule about his new CNBC program, and it might surprise some of the business-news outlet’s die-hards. “I told everyone, ‘No earnings,’” says Meyers, a veteran producer at the NBCUniversal-backed cable network. “I don’t want to hear that.”

The PSA features Jordan and Thompson saving unsuspecting internet users from sketchy internet schemes. The PSA comes as a follow up on Amazon’s commitments at the White House Cybersecurity Summit in 2021.
“Being part of this PSA was an opportunity to work with Tessa again, one of my mentors — Paul Hunter, and to support the Amazon family to get this message out that cyber security and your privacy is really important,” Jordan said. “Nobody wants their information stolen. As much as you can protect your information, and your family and friends, you should do that.

Jo Koy’s upcoming film “Easter Sunday,” out on Aug. 5, is a dream come true for the comedian in more ways than one.
For years, Jo Koy has shared stories about his family and Filipino culture in his stand-up shows, selling out arenas across the country. He has always wanted to bring that story to the big screen, but the idea was often met with rejection. Their reasoning? The story was not accessible enough.
That was until Steven Spielberg saw his 2019 comedy special, “Comin’ in Hot,” and Amblin Partners struck a deal with Koy to star in the feature film. In a Hollywood first, “Easter Sunday” features an all-Filipino cast.
“It’s our time,” Koy says, calling the film a love letter to the Filipino community. Below, Koy speaks with Variety about the scene from the film that made him cry and the importance of representation.

One of ESPN’s longtime faces is leaving the network. Trey Wingo, who hosted “SportsCenter” and the network’s NFL Draft coverage over a two-decade tenure, is exiting the network after his contract was not renewed.
The decision not to re-up Wingo’s contract came as part of ESPN’s massive job cuts, the New York Post reported earlier this month (the NY Post also reported back in September that Wingo was being let go). The host’s departure was not confirmed until today, which is also his last day at the network.
“I can barely remember a day which didn’t involve working side by side with this guy. @wingoz has been an incredible teammate & friend for more than 2 decades. On today, his last day at ESPN, I along with many others, salute him and wish him all the best in his next chapter,” said Seth Markman, ESPN’s...

ESPN reporter Josina Anderson is out at the network, an individual with knowledge of the decision told TheWrap.
The decision to release Anderson is not related to any coronavirus-led cutbacks at ESPN nor Disney. In April, ESPN executives and some of its top TV talent took pay cuts. Anderson’s role will be filled by network veterans Field Yates, Jeremy Fowler, Dan Graziano and Dianna Russini, as well as newcomer Kimberley Martin.
ESPN declined to comment. The New York Post was first to report on Anderson’s ouster.

“Redemption” is a tricky word. It’s one that comes up toward the end of “Vick” — Stanley Nelson’s two-part, four-hour “30 for 30” profile of former NFL quarterback Michael Vick — though it’s not brought up by its title subject.
In an attempt to provide a full accounting of Vick’s life and career, “Vick” stops short of full absolution or outright condemnation. With a person who’s still capable of inspiring equally passionate reactions — from those who argue for his superiority as a generationally influential football player, as well as those who say his role in a highly publicized dogfighting scandal should negate any athletic legacy — Nelson has made something that looks to address both as thoroughly as possible. It’s an admirable goal, but in this expansive project that winds between moments of insight and moments of redundancy, that pull between two opposite ideas doesn’t leave much room for anything else.
