As far as the 1978 Pink Panther cartoons go, Pet Pink Pebbles ranks somewhere in the middle. Talking about the Pink Panther cartoons in general, there's better ones but also worse. While it does fall short of being great, Pet Pink Pebbles still manages to entertain, one of the most important things about making a cartoon good and it does well in that respect.
It is predictable and lacking in originality sure, it is literally Rocky Pink remade and with not a huge amount of variety. It is certainly nowhere near as pointless as Pinkologist and Yankee Doodle Pink, but at the same time you can't shake off that feeling that it is a little. While most of the pacing is fine, there are a few lagging moments, which was also true of Rocky Pink. The animation while not bad is also not that great(it was also one of the weaker things about Rocky Pink as well), it is of better quality than a lot of the 1978 Pink Panther cartoons because some of it is clever, Pinky's facial expressions are well done and the rock is a lot of fun to watch. Pinky as always is very well drawn and the bright pink colour blends very well with the background and is not too garish. However, the drawing is sketchy, the colours tend to be flat and also at times over-saturated and most of the backgrounds are sparse in detail and simplistic, the Pink Panther cartoons do adopt a very simple style but this was a time where this simplicity was taken to extremes.
However the music is catchy, vibrantly arranged and energetic, also fitting very well(more so than that in Rocky Pink), though admittedly it is slightly repetitive in places. As ever, the theme tune is one of the best and most memorable ones out there and despite having been heard many times has lost none of its timeless value. The gags and humour are not hilarious but still funny, very like in Rocky Pink, loved the use of thought processes and signs. The highlight of Pet Pink Pebbles is its added sequence, as well as being visually clever it is the most gag filled and the cartoon's funniest scene. That already puts it ahead of Pink Valiant, Yankee Doodle Pink and Pink of Baghdad, also "remakes"/"reissues, which weren't very funny and any additions not adding very much. Despite its predictability, there is still some energy in the pacing. The rock is a somewhat bizarre character but in a good way, while its antics are a little over-familiar it is a good and amusing foil. Pinky is cool and likable with good comic timing, I also felt sorry for him too.
Overall, predictable and unoriginal but some uneven pacing and animation, but still entertaining with its highlight being the added sequence. As far as the few Pink Panther "remakes"/"reissues" go, Pet Pink Pebbles is the best, being actually good. 7/10 Bethany Cox
