In the fading summer of 1999, Robert Zemeckis took a break from the filming of Cast Away to make What Lies Beneath, a ghostly thriller set against the banks of Lake Champlain in picturesque Burlington, Vermont. Taking cues from several Old Hollywood classics of the genre but adding a spectral twist to the proceedings, Zemeckis went on to craft one of the most underrated and effective offerings from that era (released at a time when there was a lot of competition in flicks like Stir of Echoes and The Sixth Sense). Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford were his first choices for the lead roles — Claire and Dr. Norman Spencer, an apparently happy couple with demons to spare — and swiftly made themselves available. Ford reportedly made sure to clear space in his schedule to accommodate What Lies Beneath, and for unsuspecting viewers predisposed to seeing a certain heroic brand of Ford, it...

Warner Bros. is making a commitment to stay in the Timothee Chalamet business. The legendary studio has signed the actor to a multi-year, first-look deal, which represents a sizable show of faith in the 28-year-old A-list star. But following the success of monster hits such as last year's "Wonka" and both "Dune" movies, it would be hard to blame WB for going all-in on Chalamet at this point.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, specifics of the deal have not been disclosed, but the deal extends to feature projects that Chalamet would both star in and produce. It also appears the deal is limited to movies and may not extend to TV. Chalamet had this to say about it in a statement:
"Working with Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy and their teams on Wonka and Dune over these last few years has been a deeply rewarding experience. These are studio heads who believe in real movie making,...

Ghost movies offer innovative twists on familiar tales, drawing on folktales and religious beliefs. Japanese horror films inspire some of the scariest ghosts, adding depth to grief narratives. Animation and VFX technology enhance the visual storytelling of ghost movies in unique ways.
Whether they're horror movies or not, ghost movies have captured the attention of audiences for many years, and the best movies involving ghosts put an innovative twist on familiar tales of paranormal activity. No matter what kind of afterlife a film draws its inspiration from, there are plenty of folktales and religious philosophies to draw upon when making a movie about ghosts. Ghost movies differ from traditional horror and monster movies because they deal with the fear and mystery of an entity that might not be visible, capitalizing on the human fear of the unknown.

When Bruce Willis announced his retirement from acting in 2022 due to his condition, his dream to play one role in a film franchise ended. Willis was a big fan of the James Bond films. After watching Javier Bardem portray an exceptional villain in Daniel Craig’s Skyfall, Willis openly stated in 2013 that he was up for playing a big baddie in the next Bond film.

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins signed on to helm Rogue Squadron more than three years ago, but the project hasn’t made much progress since then, with multiple delays amid reports that Jenkins was butting heads creatively with Lucasfilm. The film was finally removed from the schedule in 2022, but Jenkins has now said she’s signed a new deal to return.
While speaking with Ben Mankiewicz on the Talking Pictures podcast, Jenkins explained that she left Rogue Squadron to develop Wonder Woman 3, but when that project fell apart, she returned to Star Wars.
“When I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, I thought maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3,” Jenkins said. “So we did a deal for that to happen, started a deal, but I thought I was doing Wonder Woman 3. So when Wonder Woman 3 went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, ‘oh, we gotta finish this deal.

Its ungainly final twist and unreal violence sequences dim a film with a brilliant premise and rage that still stings
Twenty-five years ago, the ultimate bro film came out; it is now rereleased for the anniversary. David Fincher’s bone-splintering, soft-tissue-pulping Fight Club is the ultraviolent hipster-fantasy about a depressed white collar nerd befriended by a supercool alpha male and inducted into a secret bare-knuckle combat cult whose purpose is to restore real masculinity. It was adapted by screenwriter Jim Uhls from the uncompromisingly pessimistic novel by Chuck Palahniuk and, after a slow commercial start, became the movie that launched a million gags about all other clubs whose first rule was that you couldn’t talk about them. It is a comic meme which survived into Emma Seligman’s recent comedy Bottoms.

The original "Night Court" ran for 193 episodes over nine seasons. It was part of a magical Thursday-night lineup of sitcoms -- along with "Family Ties," "The Cosby Show," and "Cheers" -- that dominated the popular consciousness throughout the 1980s. "Night Court" was considered "the weird one" of that lineup, but it was no less popular, earning star John Larroquette four Emmys before he intentionally withdrew himself from consideration. Since its cancelation in 1992, "Night Court" has remained beloved by the people who initially saw it, and subsequent reruns have grown a few new fans along the way.
Sometime in 2019 or 2020, however, a revival of "Night Court" was floated to NBC, and they began developing the new series that debuted on their network in 2023. The "Night Court" revival saw the return of Larroquette as Dan Fielding, the once-lascivious-now-humbled prosecutor who served the night shifts at the Manhattan Criminal Court. It is always heartwarming to hear stories about siblings helping one another, especially in the entertainment industry, where competition can be fierce. Donnie Wahlberg, the elder brother of Hollywood star Mark Wahlberg, recently revealed that he invested around $500,000 in the Ted star’s music career in the early 1990s.
The Fear star’s music career took off thanks in part to his elder brother’s investment, which also kept the former “out of the streets”. Yes, it may come as no surprise to some that Mark Wahlberg has a lengthy and diverse résumé. And no, we are not discussing his crimes in movies. Emma Stone had the opportunity to play Spider-Man’s main love interest Gwen Stacey in The Amazing Spider-Man series. But how close was she to the character’s actual age?
How old was Emma Stone compared to Gwen Stacey? Emma Stone | Tiziana Fabi/Getty Images
Stone was already used to playing high school characters before snagging her role in The Amazing Spider-Man. Her breakthrough feature, Superbad, saw her portraying a high school crush. Then she went on to revisit high school in the movie Easy A, where she played the lead. The Amazing Spider-Man would continue this tradition for Stone, as it saw her playing high school student Gwen Stacey.
Although Stone wasn’t technically a teenager during the film, she was close enough. It was announced in October 2010 that she was cast in the film, with production beginning for the feature in December of that same year. This would...

Horror movies have had a limited impact on the Academy Awards, with only six Best Picture nominations since the awards started. While no horror movies made the 2024 Best Picture nominees, past nominees like Black Swan and Get Out are still interesting to revisit. The Exorcist and The Silence of the Lambs are among the few horror movies to win Oscars, with the latter dominating in all major categories.
It has often been said the Academy Awards don't particularly like scary movies, but there have been some rare horror movies nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Ah, the 1990s. Perhaps the peak of the moviegoing experience. Theaters consistently showed classics such as the special effects marvel "Jurassic Park," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Pulp Fiction," "Fargo," and "Titanic." The decade also featured an abundance of outstanding horror films like "The Sixth Sense," "Scream," "Misery," and "Interview with the Vampire," all boasting big-name stars and top-tier directors.
However, playing at the opposite end of the cineplex were thrillers you may have never heard about or skipped simply due to bad reviews or scathing word of mouth. Some of Hollywood's top talent attached themselves to such projects, thwarted by ornery critics or moviegoers seeking higher-end entertainment. That's a shame.
While there are undoubtedly plenty of terrible horror films from the 90s, the decade was also ripe with lower-tier entries that have aged surprisingly well. Many don't reset the bar established by esteemed pictures like "The Silence of the Lambs,...

Action stars like Harrison Ford and Sylvester Stallone have shown their incredible range in roles beyond action movies. Jerry Maguire, Locke, and The Wrestler highlight Tom Cruise, Tom Hardy, and Mickey Rourke's versatile acting skills. Keanu Reeves shines in The Gift, proving his ability to deliver a compelling performance beyond his iconic action roles.
It's often easy for audiences to dismiss the acting talents of action stars, but some action icons have delivered Oscar-worthy performances which silenced their critics. Action movie stars are burdened with the public perception that their work is often less impressive than dramatic actors. While it's true that most action movies don't rely on powerful performances, this doesn't mean that the actors in the leading roles are any less capable. Donnie Wahlberg hoped Blue Bloods would have the longevity of Svu, disappointed by its cancelation after 14 seasons. Ishana Night Shyamalan's horror movie debut, The Watchers, looks seriously eerie and impressive. The film is a true horror, unlike M. Night Shyamalan's horror/thriller hybrids. M. Night Shyamalan is involved with The Watchers as a producer.
Ishana Night Shyamalan's directorial debut The Watchers not only looks like one of the most intriguing horror movies of 2024, it also appears to have achieved something that's eluded her father M. Night in his recent movies. Following the shock success of The Sixth Sense in 1999, subsequent M. This worked a treat for the likes of Unbreakable or Signs, but the filmmaker's later focus on directing blockbusters was the wrong move.

Some movies have iconic plot twists that make fans wish they could experience them for the first time again. Watching landmark movies like The Sixth Sense or The Dark Knight for the first time creates a unique, unparalleled experience. Masterpieces like Spirited Away and Mad Max: Fury Road emphasize the impossibility of replicating the feeling of watching a great movie for the first time.
Some movies are so impactful or so iconic that fans will always wish they could just forget the movie entirely, and watch it for the first time again. An essential part of the success of a movie is its rewatch value, which drives post-theatrical sales and rentals. However, nothing can beat the divine experience of watching a landmark movie for the first time and feeling the full effect of the twists and turns, and the movie cementing its position in cinematic history.

I think he’s a true artist in the capitol-a sense of the word."And I think people are gonna be really surprised and excited about the movie we make. It’s very bizarre, very dark, and it’s wild.”Plot details -...

Josh Hartnett teases that M. Night Shyamalan's new movie, Trap, is "very bizarre" and "very dark". The film is confirmed to be in the thriller genre, continuing a Shyamalan trend, and it will likely have a twist. Trap's filming was not affected by the SAG-AFTRA strike last year, so it's unlikely to move from its planned August release date.
M. Night Shyamalan's Trap gets an exciting new tease from star Josh Hartnett. One of the most well-known names in the genre movie space, Shyamalan recently brought audiences Knock at the Cabin, which was released in theaters last February. The filmmaker now has his sights set on a mysterious new project called Trap that will hit theaters this summer, though details about the movie's story remain hard to come by.
In a recent interview with IndieWire at the SAG Awards, Hartnett teases what's to come from Trap ahead of its scheduled August release date.

Stephen King is, as his name suggests, the king of horror fiction (while occasionally delving into other genres). The combination of his vivid writing style, characters with unique personalities and special abilities, and epic stories that unfurl with riveting suspense make his work rife for cinematic interpretation. Within these spine-chilling stories, King infuses keen observations on the human condition, and how evil — both supernatural and real — manifests in our society. Stephen King's literary works have produced some of the greatest films of all time including Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," Brian De Palma's "Carrie," and Rob Reiner's "Stand By Me." Over 70 of his novels and short stories have been adapted into films or television shows, but since he is such a prolific writer — often churning out several books each year — there are countless that have yet to be adapted. This list ranks seven of Stephen King's engrossing page-turners...

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender recently released on the streaming platform on February 22nd, 2024. The live-action series which is a remake of the popular 2005 animated show, has been at the center of a lot of discussions prior to its release. From speculations about changes to key characters to modification of plotlines, not all the hype surrounding the show has been positive.
A still from Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender
Netflix, in an effort to raise excitement and expectations, chose to keep the audition process under wraps by giving away very little information regarding the casting of characters. This approach led to quite a bit of confusion even for prospective actors like Ken Leung. Not being aware of the original series, Leung mistook the ‘Avatar’ in the title as a casting call for James Cameron’s epic masterpiece.

While Renny Harlin was promoting his film, The Bricklayer, JoBlo asked him about the making of Die Hard 2: Die Harder, and he had high praise for star Bruce Willis, who he compared, favourably, to the new generation of action stars, who seem reluctant to ever allow themselves to get beaten up on-screen, Willis never had this issue, said Harlin: “I really wanted Bruce Willis to get really screwed up. His face is a bloody mess by the end of the movie, and like you said, it really does make the character more heroic. They are really taking punishment and keep going.”
However, as we reported a little while back, there was one line Willis didn’t love in Die Hard 2: Just the fax, ma’am…

Becca and Tyler's visit to their "grandparents" turned increasingly disturbing as erratic behavior and eerie scenes unfolded. M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit kept viewers on edge with unsettling moments and unexpected twists, reminiscent of his earlier works. From terrifying hide-and-seek under the house to violent confrontations, The Visit delivered chilling scenes that left lasting impact.
The found-footage horror movie The Visit had plenty of disturbing moments that kept viewers squirming and uncomfortable. The story of two teenagers, named Becca and Tyler, who were going to visit their so-called estranged grandparents, Nana and Pop Pop, during this vacation it quickly became apparent that something was not right and as The Visit progressed it only got increasingly more disturbing. With an eerie and tense atmosphere, the disturbing scenes in The Visit ranged from the quietly creepy to the outright outrageous, as these two teens suffered through a five-day stay that they would never forget.

It’s ironic that memory is the central theme of Piero Messina’s Berlin Competition title “Another End,” when so many of its twists and turns are so directly lifted from other films that it feels like you’ve seen them before; even watching it for the first time feels like rewatching. But if that makes this elegiac literalization of the timeless theme of “what is grief but love persevering?” a rather edgeless experience it’s not a wholly unpleasant one. Less designed to provoke than to soothe, perhaps the very familiarity of much of the movie is a virtue, letting us enjoy its sleek surfaces safe in the knowledge that there’s nothing much lurking in the depths to alarm us.
Indeed, the story’s central alarming incident has happened some time before the film even begins: a car crash for which Sal (Gael García Bernal) believes he was...

"The Visit," an M. Night Shyamalan movie, had the lowest budget of any of his films at just $5 million. Shyamalan took a $5 million loan against his estate to fund "The Visit" after experiencing losses with previous films. The minimal budget of "The Visit" was made possible by the film's found footage format and the lack of renowned actors in leading roles.
An 8-year-old M. Night Shyamalan movie is not only impressive because it features one of his best twists but also because it maintains a budget record. While most directors experience a fair share of ebbs and flows, failures and successes during their filmmaking careers, M. Spoilers for M. Night Shyamalans' The Visit.
Loretta's strained relationship with her parents and lack of photos and communication were clues to The Visit's twist. Becca and Tyler had never met their grandparents before and didn't know what they looked like. The grandparents had strange rules, and Nana's odd behavior during hide-and-seek hinted at their true intentions.
M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit has every element that makes a Shyamalan horror movie, including a plot twist that was hinted at throughout the whole movie. After rising to fame in 1999 with The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan has continued to make movies, mostly horror ones that often include a twist and shocking reveal. Although these elements led to predictable and disappointing reveals and movies, there are others with interesting twists that added to the tension of the story, as was the case of the 2015 found footage horror movie The Visit.

M. Night Shyamalan is considered a master at delivering drop-your-popcorn-level twisty conclusions to his haunting films. People still talk about the end of The Sixth Sense as perhaps one of the greatest twists in the history of modern cinema. The jaw-dropper at the end of Unbreakable ranks close to the top as well. But there is another pretty decent curveball that the director tosses up in a lesser-known movie that is currently streaming on Max. In 2016's The Visit (which is currently streaming on Max) he plays on the hallowed relationship between children and their doting grandparents. How could Shyamalan toy with the innocence of this? It is an excellent film that deftly blends found footage with the director's signature slow-burning tension to leave audiences with yet another "Wtf?" moment. Let's dig into what exactly happens at the end of his underrated movie, The Visit.

Action stars like Stallone and Schwarzenegger have surprised audiences with great dramatic performances. Keanu Reeves proved his skill as a dramatic actor in "My Own Private Idaho" before becoming a huge action star. Bruce Willis showcased his quiet and vulnerable side in "The Sixth Sense," shedding his reputation as an action hero.
The action movie stars of Hollywood blockbusters are not often known for their sentimental or vulnerable nature, but, despite this, they can often surprise audiences with great dramatic performances. While blowing things up and chasing after the bad guys is often a recipe for success, from time to time, action stars like to step outside their comfort zone and take part in movies of a more dramatic nature. From clever crime thrillers to heartbreaking stories of recovery, the type of dramatic roles taken up by action stars can vary widely but often end up with surprisingly great performances.

Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.
Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

While he is most often associated with the infamous twist endings to his films, M. Night Shyamalan’s great skill has always been his ability to write strong characters. While he’s certainly inverted and challenged expectations when it comes to drama, Shyamalan’s best work emerges when he’s able to write to the strengths of his actors. He’s often been a filmmaker that has allowed established stars to show a different side of their personalities, such as Bruce Willis’ uncharacteristically nuanced role in The Sixth Sense or James McAvoy’s physically laborious performance in Split. However, the originality of Shyamalan’s writing has also given him the opportunity to “break in” new stars with his challenging material. While its plot mechanics have been debated, Shyamalan’s 2004 horror thriller The Village is both deeply scary and surprisingly emotional thanks to the breakout performance by Bryce Dallas Howard.

Things get very eggs-istential in Scrambled, the hilarious new comedy from Leah McKendrick, who’s been generating buzz for penning the I Know What You Did Last Summer requel directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge). McKendrick wrote, directed, and starred in her new film based on her own experience deciding to freeze her eggs.

The comedy also stars Ego Nwodim (SNL), Andrew Santino, Adam Rodriguez, Laura Cerón (Station 19), and Clancy Brown. The film marks McKendrick’s directorial debut. It’s yet another creative coup for the filmmaker, who’d been tapped to write the Grease prequel Summer...

In January of 1999, two teen movies opened back to back and kicked off what would be one of the most extraordinary years for youth-oriented movies in the history of Hollywood. Both were No. 1 at the box office their first weekend. Both boasted remarkable casts of rising stars — they even shared a star in Paul Walker. And both whipped ancient genre conventions into new combinations that made them fresh and new. Yet for all their similarities, “Varsity Blues” and “She’s All That” couldn’t have been more different: one an R-rated sports drama that tempered its inspirational coming-of-age drama with surprisingly harsh depictions of misogyny and physical and mental abuse, the other a sweet, good-natured romantic comedy nearly as innocent as a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland vehicle from the 1940s. In their similarities and differences lies the key to why 1999 was such a great year for movies of their type — the 1939 of teen movies.

This year celebrates 25 years since the final year of the 1900’s. A year that brought about such classics as The Matrix, Fight Club, American Pie, and Office Space as well as my personal favorite movie of all time: Arlington Road. The year was so successful that 20 years later it would inspire a book titled Best Movie Year Ever.
With a vast cannon of films ranging from highly anticipated block busting prequels (Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace) to that years’ eventual Best Picture winner American Beauty and a movie that changed the meaning of twist endings forever (The Sixth Sense) 1999 truly was a year for the ages.

Following the one-two punch of The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, M. Night Shyamalan's Signs had the unenviable goal of living up to the legacy that the young filmmaker was creating for himself in Hollywood, and it largely succeeded in doing so. The film, a modern classic in its own right, is part science fiction nightmare, part horror, part family drama, and part exploration of faith. It's a bold mix that works in the film's favor, especially if one subscribes to the theory that the aliens are, in fact, demons (which corrects the "water" plot hole). The cast is perhaps the film's strongest asset. Both Rory Culkin and Abigail Breslin are excellent as the Hess children, bringing a realism to their characters that, thankfully, didn't border on precociousness. Joaquin Phoenix infuses his Merrill Hess with a believable brotherly connection. The film, though, lives and dies with Mel Gibson, and he excels as Graham Hess,...

Will the Oscars ever get their heads out of their asses? Last year, horror fans were quite upset when Mia Goth’s performance in Pearl was passed over for the majority of Mainstream Awards, primarily the Academy Awards. People were shouting from every corner of social media, claiming that Goth was robbed. And watch this scene without thinking she deserves some kind of accolade. She’s phenomenal. Yet I wasn’t surprised by Goth’s snub because the Academy never respects horror. And personally, it was never more evident than when the best performance of the year wasn’t nominated. I’m, of course, talking about Toni Collette in Hereditary.

Maureen “Mo” Henry, the veteran negative cutter and a giant in the postproduction community, died Sunday of complications from liver failure in Los Angeles, her son, Logan, told The Hollywood Reporter. She was 67.

The early aughts were a very good time to be M. Night Shyamalan, certainly the best time. Coming off his Oscar-nominated blockbuster The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan was instantly a household name and recognized as one of the most exciting new filmmakers to come along in years. He was even dubbed “the next Spielberg” by Newsweek Magazine. Night certainly leaned into this hype, very much enjoyed the accolades and attention and quickly parlayed that good will into a couple of memorable thrillers: 2000’s Unbreakable and 2002’s Signs. While neither film reached the box office or pop cultural heights The Sixth Sense did, they were evidence that Shyamalan was indeed a born filmmaker, able to craft genre films that were suspenseful and dramatic in equal measure. After Signs came out, it was hard to find someone who didn’t know the name Shyamalan; he was the rare director whose name was as...

Superhero movies are frequently the top performers at the box office nowadays. The public is intimately familiar with characters like Deadpool, Scarecrow, and of course Iron Man. But 25 years ago, the blockbuster landscape was markedly different. The Top 10 domestic grossers of 1999 included The Sixth Sense, Runaway Bride, and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Audiences were routinely turning out for movie star-fronted comedies or buzzworthy blockbusters like The Matrix, but comic book adaptations were still a low-tier genre that was a hodgepodge of the violent, the silly, and the baffling (Barb Wire).
