Ethan Coen's queer roadtrip film "Drive-Away Dolls" is set in 1997, and feels like an escapee from that era, for better and for worse. On the one hand, it possesses all the impish, make-the-straights-squirm energy of a legit '90s indie lesbian farce. It is not just upfront about its queerness, but confrontationally playful about it. "Drive-Away Dolls" unapologetically and cartoonishly plunges audiences into lesbian basement make-out parties and rowdy gay bars, flinging about cunnilingus jokes, masturbation scenes, and multiple on-screen dildos with gleeful impunity. It's a lightweight, weirdly teen-friendly (but very R-rated) slumber party movie with an upbeat and liberating "be gay, do crime" vibe. It's a queer, hand grenade-shaped squeak toy.
On the other hand, however, "Drive-Away Dolls" is being released in 2024, and the very fact that it depicts queer characters having queer sex and talking about queer issues isn't nearly as confrontational as it once was. There...

Move that Thanksgiving feast to the couch, because you have a lot of Netflix-watching to do before December 1, when these movies will disappear from the streaming service. Usually June is associated with the first real month of summer -- a time to go out and frolic through the wilderness like a snowman that doesn't know any better. But it also gets really, really hot, which has people retreating to their local multiplex or, even better, their luxuriously air-conditioned living rooms. With that in mind, take a look at the television shows and movies that will be available on Netflix's steaming service come June (via Vulture).
Thought the snail-who-dreamed-of-being-a-racecar saga ended with last summer's DreamWorks Animated joint "Turbo?" Think again. Apparently there's a television spin-off. And you can watch it on Netflix. We also have to give it up for a pair of wonderful sequels that are going to be on in June: the obviously-shot-in-Canada-even-though-it's-set-in-New York robo-epic "Short Circuit 2" (a favorite since childhood) and the far darker and more sinister "Wolf Creek 2," a sequel to the...

Have you been thinking about watching Bomb Girls but putting it off? Maybe you’re already too committed to other shows or history isn’t your thing. Well now is not only a good time to jump on the bandwagon, it may be the last; the show’s producers have said that the show’s renewal hinges on tonight’s episode getting good ratings. Need another reason to tune in tonight? Here are 10.

This is not an exaggeration: You have never seen a lesbian character like Betty McRae on your TV. A lesbian Rosie the Riveter who can't be open about her sexuality without risking her career, her relationships, even her safety— but who also refuses to stuff herself into the heterosexual box 1940s society demanded of her. In honor of the day of love (or a manufactured holiday of corporate greed) I got to thinking about fictional characters I’m in love with. Ask any of my friends, and they’ll tell you the list is pretty long. I can’t help it! Whether I’m swooning over The Oc reruns and wondering where Seth Cohen was for me in high school, or contemplating whether I’d be willing to live in the 1920s if it meant Matthew Crawley could be my boyfriend (yes), if there’s a charming guy on television,...

I'd like to start by thanking everyone who commented this week. I'm so excited to gush over this show together. Let's never fight.
So far, other than talking to you guys, the coolest thing about recapping this show is being forced to re-watch and rethink episodes. It's made me change my opinion on a couple of things. Firstly, I'll admit that I was not initially very fond of Ms. Gladys Witham, because I thought she was the Canadian Lady Mary, and the spot for "poor little rich girl" in my heart has already been claimed by a girl with the eyebrows of an angel and an immortal golden retriever. But then it came to me in a dream: Gladys isn't the Canadian Mary Crowley, she's the 1940s Spencer Hastings. Because Gladys, like Spencer, uses her beauty, wits, and sense of entitlement for...

Kevin Kline, Tom Selleck kiss, In & Out Following my Valentine's Day post featuring lots of male-female kisses and embraces (and a few shapely legs, bare breasts, and sensuous lips, courtesy of, respectively, Silvana Mangano, Clara Calamai, and Jane Russell), here's the gay/lesbian version. This Gay Kiss Montage post was originally published in June 2007, when Turner Classic Movies ran a couple of dozen films featuring gay/lesbian/bi/etc. characters as part of their Screened Out series. Created in late 2006 by Robert Eldredge, the video was inspired by the finale of Giuseppe Tornatore's Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award winner Cinema Paradiso, in which Jacques Perrin watches clips — kisses, hugs, embraces, nudity, sensuality, expressions of human desire — that, decades earlier, had been cut from the films screened at his Italian village's old movie house. The local Catholic priest had found those bits of celluloid harmful to the town's morals and family values.

Fishnet is an outrageous, burlesque-fueled romp that combines elements of Thelma and Louise and Sister Act, with a camp factor approaching near-John Waters levels. With a delightfully over-the-top cast and a plot that would make any 80s screenwriter proud, it's the goofiest lesbian movie this side of Better Than Chocolate. It's also one of the most fun, with a surprisingly touching story tucked behind all the jokes and theatrical posturing.
It all begins with burlesque – a good quarter of the movie's run time involves dirty dancing – as our protagonists are professional burlesque performers. Trixie (Rebekah Kochan) and Sulie (Jillian Easton) are girlfriends, happily in love and gainfully employed by Lady Jeanette (Emma Messenger), an absolute cartoon character who runs the bar and the dance troupe.

Elena Undone opens with a hazy, slow motion shot of two women walking towards each other. A voiceover dreamily states “In love, one and one are ... one. Seldom do we get to experience the art in love.” It goes on to reference Emily Bronte and the scene reveals that we’ve actually been listening to a church sermon (a not-so-subtle transition to a stained glass window is our first hint).
From here, we meet Elena (Necar Zadegan), a beautiful, soft-spoken woman. She’s married to the preacher (Barry, played by Gary Weeks), and they’re trying for another child, a subject that Mr. Preacher seems much more keen on than Elena. She’s accosted by a cartoonish gaggle of churchgoers for not attending an anti-gay marriage protest, and she seeks comfort in the arms of Tyler (Sam Harris), a sort of love guru who makes films about “soulemetry” and stages...

Much like the previous entries in the series, She Likes Girls 4 offers a selection of lesbian short films, cherry-picked to represent some of the best examples from the last year or two. This time around, the focus is on “tomboys and tough girls,” though the theme doesn’t really carry through the whole collection (or the bubblegum pink packaging).
Thankfully, the quality is consistent — and none of the movies feels like a cheap throwaway or worse — a transparent nod to a famous celesbian. There are a couple of mild clunkers in the bunch, but nothing poor enough to ruin the whole package. In fact, the overall experience is likely to satisfy far better than your average lesbian feature film.
The collection begins with Babysitting Andy, one of the more offbeat comedies in the bunch. Actually, all of the funny shorts in this package are oddly surreal — with a prevailing campiness...

Christina Cox has more than 40 roles to her credit but some love her best as Kim in Better than Chocolate, for her turn as the bisexual private detective Vicki in Blood Ties, and one half of the lesbian crime fighting couple in Nikki & Nora. Christina's newest sci-fi series, Defying Gravity doesn't have her playing a lesbian or bisexual, but she does get to wear form-fitting space suits and rattle off scientific jargon as a mission biologist. What's better than a hot nerd in space? Nothing, that's what.
Christina talked to AfterEllen.com recently about her new show, which is described by a production executive as a "sci-fi premise, told in a female-friendly way." She also gave us some dish on Ladycops, the show-within-a-show from the web series, 3Way, and shared her thoughts about this year's Hot 100 List.
