Metal Gear Solid (1998 Video Game)
Gray Fox: Snake. We're not tools of the government, or anyone else. Fighting was the only thing... the only thing I was good at. But... at least I always fought for what I believed in.
Solid Snake: A strong man doesn't need to read the future, he makes his own.
Otacon: Have you ever... loved someone?
Solid Snake: That's what you came to ask?
Otacon: No, I was wondering if even soldiers fall in love.
Solid Snake: What are you trying to say?
Otacon: I want to ask you. Do you think love can bloom even on a battlefield?
Solid Snake: Yeah. I do. I think at any time, any place, people can fall in love with each other. But if you love someone, you have to be able to protect them.
Gray Fox: After Zanzibar, I was taken from the battle, neither truly alive, nor truly dead, an undying shadow, in a world of lights. Now, in front of you, I can finally die.
Meryl Silverburgh: Any family?
Solid Snake: No, but I was raised by many people.
Meryl Silverburgh: Is there anyone you like?
Solid Snake: I've never been interested in anyone else's life...
Meryl Silverburgh: So you are all alone. Just like Mantis said...
Solid Snake: Other people just complicate my life. I don't like to get involved.
Meryl Silverburgh: ...You're a sad, lonely man.
Naomi: You mustn't allow yourself to be chained to fate, to be ruled by your genes. Human beings can choose the kind of life that they want to live. What's important is that you choose life... and then live.
Dr. Naomi Hunter: Are you smoking?
Solid Snake: Yeah, so what?
Dr. Naomi Hunter: Didn't you know that cigarettes contain benzopyrene, a chemical that leads to lung cancer? We now know that when benzopyrene enters the body, it changes to benzopyrene diolepoxide and attaches to the receptors on the P53 gene, the gene which causes lung cancer. The BPDE attaches to the P53 gene in three specific locations and causes pre-cancerous changes to the lung tissue.
Solid Snake: You know a lot about science, but you don't know how good a cigarette tastes in the morning.
Psycho Mantis: From the moment we're thrown into this world, we're fated to bring each other nothing but pain and misery.
Sniper Wolf: I watched the stupidity of mankind through the scope of my rifle.
Naomi: Well, if you come back in one piece, maybe I'll let you do a strip search on me.
Solid Snake: I'll hold you to that, doctor.
Solid Snake: It's easy to forget what a sin is in the middle of a battlefield.
Gray Fox: A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal!
Gray Fox: Good! Now we can fight as warriors! Hand to hand! It is the basis of all combat! Only a fool trusts his life to a weapon!
Revolver Ocelot: The greatest gun ever created. The Colt Single Action Army.
Vulcan Raven: You are a Snake which was not created by Nature. You and the Boss... you are from another world... a world that I do not wish to know...
Otacon: The truth is... my grandfather was part of the Manhattan Project. He lived with the guilt for the rest of his life. And my father... he was born on August 6, 1945.
Solid Snake: The day of the Hiroshima bomb. God's got a sense of humor, all right.
Solid Snake: If you ask me, there's no happiness to be found in death... no peace either. I'm leaving here alive.
Otacon: Snake. What was she fighting for? What am I fighting for? What are you fighting for?
Solid Snake: If we make it through this I'll tell you.
Otacon: Okay. I'll be searching too.
Gray Fox: That's it, Snake. Hurt me more. Make me feel alive again.
Solid Snake: Unfortunately, killing is just one of those things that gets easier the more you do it.
[Liquid suddenly appears in the Hind]
Liquid Snake: So the Snake's finally come out of his hole? Are you ready now... my brother?
Solid Snake: Why are you calling me brother? Who the hell are you?
Liquid Snake: I'm YOU. I'm your shadow.
Solid Snake: What?
Liquid Snake: Ask the father that you killed. I'll send you to hell to meet him.
Solid Snake: [Suspenseful music and sound effects play just like before the DARPA cheif and Baker's deaths. The music stops] You're not in pain are you?
Solid Snake: [Pats Otacon on the back] You feel okay? Nothin' bothering you?
Otacon: What's wrong? Getting all friendly all of a sudden.
Solid Snake: Oh, nothing. I'm glad you're okay.
Otacon: You're strange...
Solid Snake: I'm a little nervous. Everybody else I've saved suddenly dies.
Otacon: You're bad luck.
Meryl Silverburgh: So... tell me Snake, what's your name? Your real name?
Solid Snake: A name means nothing on the battlefield.
Meryl Silverburgh: How old are you?
Solid Snake: Old enough to know what death looks like.
Liquid Snake: Foolish man. He prayed for death, and it found him. You see, Snake? You can't protect anyone, not even yourself!
Prison Guard: [If he sees Snake squirt the ketchup around himself] What are you playin' around with that ketchup for?
Vulcan Raven: You live in Alaska too? You are aware of the Alaskan Indian-Eskimo Olypmics?
Solid Snake: Yeah, I know it. You must be a real threat in the muktuk eating contest.
Vulcan Raven: Yes, but there is another event that I excel at. It is called the ear pull. It is an event where two contestents pull each others' ears while enduring the harsh cold. It tests pysical as well as spiritual strength.
Solid Snake: You wanna pull each other's ears?
Sniper Wolf: I finally understand. I wasn't waiting to kill people, I was waiting for someone to kill me. A man like you. You're a hero.
Master Miller: Listen. There's not a soldier alive that doesn't question himself. And if there is one, he's nothing more than a murderer.
[Miller/Liquid Snake says this line, NOT Solid Snake]
Solid Snake: [during the briefing of the mission] I told you. Even if I do owe you, I don't owe anything to this army or this country!
Roy Campbell: You will accept this assignment.
Solid Snake: Why should I be stupid enough to do that? I'm no patriot.
Roy Campbell: Snake, there's enough dirt in your file, from your days as an agent, to keep you in the stockade until you're a very old man.
Solid Snake: Oh I see... blackmail.
Roy Campbell: No, Snake. I prefer to look at it as helping you come to a decision more easily.
Solid Snake: Fox, why? What do you want from me?
Gray Fox: I'm a prisoner of Death. Only you can free me...
Solid Snake: Fox, stay out of this... What about Naomi? She's hell bent on taking revenge for you.
Gray Fox: Naomi...
Solid Snake: You're the only one that can stop her.
Gray Fox: No... I can't.
Solid Snake: Why?
Gray Fox: Because I'm the one who killed her parents. I was young then and couldn't bring myself to kill her too. I felt so bad that I decided to take her with me. I raised her like she was my own blood to soothe my guilty conscience. Even now she thinks of me as her brother...
Solid Snake: Fox...
Gray Fox: From the outside, we might have seemed like a happy brother and sister. But every time I looked at her, I saw her parents' eyes staring back at me... Tell her for me. Tell her that I was the one who did it.
Sniper Wolf: [as she is dying] I was born on a battlefield. Raised on a battlefield. Gunfire, sirens and screams... they were my lullabies... Hunted like dogs, day after day... driven from our ragged shelters... That... was my life. Each morning, I'd wake up... and find a few more of my family or friends dead beside me. I'd stare at the morning sun... and pray to make it through the day. The governments of the world turned a blind eye to our misery. But then... he appeared. My hero... Saladin... he took me away from all that...
Solid Snake: Saladin... You mean Big Boss?
Solid Snake: There's no winning or losing for a mercenary.
Liquid Snake: [to Fox] In the Middle East we don't hunt foxes, we hunt jackals. Instead of fox hounds we use royal harriers.
Vulcan Raven: [after battling Solid Snake] He is just as you said. In battle, he is as if posessed by a demon.
Vulcan Raven: [as the ravens begin to eat him alive] Snake, in the natural world, there's no such thing as boundless slaughter; there's always an end to it. But you're different.
Solid Snake: [walking away] What are you trying to say?
Vulcan Raven: The path you walk on has no end. Each step you take is paved with the corpses of your enemies. Their souls will haunt you forever. You shall have no peace. Hear me, Snake; my spirit will be watching you
[Snake turns around to find Raven's body gone, completely consumed by the ravens]
Gray Fox: I've come from another world to do battle with you.
Solid Snake: What is it? Revenge?
Gray Fox: It is nothing so trivial as revenge. A fight to the death with you. Only in that can my soul find respite.
Liquid Snake: I've got to go swat down a couple of bothersome flies.
Solid Snake: Okay, let me try to say this another way... stay the hell out of my way.
Meryl Silverburgh: You're a real bastard, just like my uncle said.
Solid Snake: Ha ha, I told you. The real me is no match for the legend.
Meryl Silverburgh: It looks like you were right.
Meryl Silverburgh: Don't worry, I'm disguised in this enemy uniform.
Solid Snake: You won't be for long with the way you walk.
Meryl Silverburgh: What does that mean?
Solid Snake: Oh... nothing.
Psycho Mantis: [looking at the screen] You like Castlevania, don't you?
Solid Snake: How did they get your password?
Kenneth Baker: I never had any training on how to resist torture.
Solid Snake: [about Ocelot] It looks like he had some fun with you alright.
Kenneth Baker: Oh he isn't human, I tell you he loved every second of it.
Solid Snake: What happened to your arm?
Kenneth Baker: He broke it.
Solid Snake: Looks like you're more than even now, his was sliced off.
Kenneth Baker: Ha! You're a funny man.
Mei Ling: Snake. That's a ladies bathroom.
Solid Snake: I know that. I saw Meryl come in here.
Mei Ling: So you went in after her? Are you some kind of pervert? I won't let you save your mission now.
Solid Snake: Listen Mei Ling, this is the only place on this base that I can talk to Meryl alone.
Mei Ling: Whatever, weirdo. Don't call me again.
Roy Campbell: If you ask me, these so-called Next-Generation Special Forces should to be called "simulated soldiers". They have no real battle experience.
Solid Snake: Video game players, huh?
Meryl Silverburgh: So, there's something you like?
Solid Snake: Yeah, you've got a great butt!
Meryl Silverburgh: Oh, I see! First it's my eyes, now it's my butt! What's next?
Solid Snake: On the battlefield, you never think about what's next.
Otacon: What's with these guys? It's like one of my Japanese animes!
Otacon: [if Meryl dies] Snake, people die. But death is not defeat, that's what Hemmingway said. I lost Wolf too, but that wasn't defeat. She and I will be together forever. We didn't lose anything.
Vulcan Raven: He and I will meet again in battle.
Revolver Ocelot: Same prediction as always?
Vulcan Raven: Yes. The raven on my head, it thirsts for his blood.
Sniper Wolf: You are a fool to come back here, stupid man.
Revolver Ocelot: We live in a sad age. Imperialism, totalitarianism, perestroika... 20th century Russia had its share of problems, but at least they had an ideology. Russia today has nothing.
Vulcan Raven: In nature there is no such thing as boundless slaughter, there is always an end to it. But you, Snake, are different. The paths you walk on have no end, each step you take is paved with the corpses of your enemies. Their spirits will haunt you forever. You shall have *No* peace.
Solid Snake: Metal Gear is in an underground maintenance base to the north.
Meryl Silverburgh: Take me too. I know this place better than you do.
Solid Snake: You'll just slow me down. You don't have enough battle experience.
Meryl Silverburgh: I won't slow you down. I promise...
Solid Snake: And what if you do?
Meryl Silverburgh: Then you can shoot me.
Solid Snake: I don't like to waste bullets.
Roy Campbell: [Talking about Snake face his twin Liquid ] That's why we really need you for this mission.
Naomi: You're the only one who can beat him. Now that I've met you, I know. You've got something that he doesn't. I can see it in your eyes.
Snake: Why don't I find that thought more conforting?
Solid Snake: I'll only accept orders directly from you, Colonel. No cutoffs involved, okay?
Roy Campbell: Agreed. That's why I was called. But one thing...
Solid Snake: What?
Roy Campbell: I'm not a Colonel anymore, just a retired old warhorse.
Solid Snake: I understand... Colonel.
Liquid Snake: You've served your purpose. You may die now.
Solid Snake: People call mercenaries like us "Dogs of War." But you're different. You are a Wolf... You will die the proud wolf you are.
[Solid Snake, locked up, sees the DARPA Chief's corpse]
Solid Snake: Looks like I got a roommate...
Sniper Wolf: Do you want to die now? Or after your female friend? Which will it be?
Solid Snake: I'll die after I kill you.
Sniper Wolf: Is that right? Well at least you've got spirit.
Meryl Silverburgh: That's the second time I've been able to sneak up on the legendary Solid Snake.
Otacon: I don't know why, but she's nice to me.
Solid Snake: Sounds like Stockholm Syndrome to me.
Solid Snake: This isn't a training exercise. Our lives are riding on this. There are no heroes or heroines. If you lose, you're worm food.
Roy Campbell: I just invited you here so we could have this chat.
Solid Snake: Invited? That's what you call sending armed soldiers after me?
Roy Campbell: Sorry if they were a little rough with you.
Liquid Snake: Stupid woman. Falling in love with a man who doesn't even have a name...
Solid Snake: I have a name.
Liquid Snake: NO. We have no past, no future. And even if we did, it wouldn't truly be ours!
[to Snake, about him and Liquid]
Jim Houseman: You two are an embarrassment from the 1970's... our country's dirty little secret. You can't be allowed to live.
[while Snake crosses the canyon, Raven appears in an M1 tank]
Vulcan Raven: This is Raven's territory... Snakes don't belong in Alaska... I will not let you pass...
[to the tank gunner]
Vulcan Raven: Send him a message.
[the tank cannon fires at Snake, who dodges the blast]
Vulcan Raven: Ha ha ha ha ha... That's right... You belong on the ground. You should crawl on the ground like the snake you are.
Snake: Looks like you're more than even now, his was sliced off.
Solid Snake: Are you telling me Naomi was working with the Pentagon?
Liquid Snake: They thought she was.
Revolver Ocelot: So you're the one that the Boss keeps talking about.
Solid Snake: And you?
Revolver Ocelot: Special Operations FOX-HOUND... Revolver Ocelot. I've been waiting for you, Solid Snake. Now we'll see if the man can live up to the legend.
Kenneth Baker: Secret projects paid for by the Pentagon's black budget. You can avoid a lot of red tape and get a great lead time on your weapons production. And no one can bother you... not even those bleeding heart liberals on the military oversight committee...
Solid Snake: Bribes...
Kenneth Baker: I prefer to think of it as good business...
Solid Snake: Colonel, about Meryl...
Roy Campbell: I... I already know!
Roy Campbell: Meryl was... my daughter!
Solid Snake: What?
Solid Snake: There are no heroes in war. The only heroes I know are either dead or in prison. One or the other.
Meryl Silverburgh: But Snake, you're a hero, aren't you?
Solid Snake: I'm just a man who's good at what he does: Killing.
Gray Fox: Snake, be careful! There are Claymore mines around there. Use a Mine Detector!
Solid Snake: Who are you?
Gray Fox: Just call me "Deepthroat".
Solid Snake: Deepthroat? The informant from the Watergate scandal?
Gray Fox: Never mind about that.
Solid Snake: You're not using burst transmission. Are you nearby?
Gray Fox: Listen. There's a tank in front of your position waiting to ambush you.
Solid Snake: Who are you, anyway?
Gray Fox: One of your fans.
Solid Snake: I gave into my fear! I gave into my pain! I sold your life to save my own. I'm a loser. I'm not the hero you thought I was! I'm nothing!
Roy Campbell: You okay, Snake?
Snake: I'm not the right guy. I can't save the world.
Naomi: What's wrong?
Snake: I gave into the pain. I'm sorry, Colonel. I sacrificed Meryl to save myself...
Roy Campbell: Snake... She was a soldier. She knew the risks. Battlefield casualties are always tragic, but they're an unavoidable part of war.
Naomi: Don't blame yourself. You still have a mission to do.
Meryl Silverburgh: [Snake is killed by Meryl's punches] This can't be happening...
Roy Campbell: [Opening Lines] The nuclear weapons disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island in Alaska's Fox Archepeligo was attacked and captured by Next Generation Special Forces being lead by members of FOX-HOUND. They're demanding that the government turn over the remains of Big Boss, and they say that if their demands aren't met within 24 hours, they'll launch a nuclear weapon. You'll have two mission objectives. First you're to rescue DARPA Chief Donald Anderson, and the President of Armstech, Kennith Baker. Both are being held as hostages. Secondly, you're to investigate whether or not the terrorists have the ability to make a nuclear strike, and stop them if they do.
Liquid Snake: [Liquid Fox has Gray Fox pinned against REX, Gray Fox fired at it's raydome destroying it, and forcing Liquid to open REX's cockpit] Impressive! You are indeed worthy of the code name 'FOX' but now you're mine!
Revolver Ocelot: [if Snake kills President Baker while battling Ocelot] You idiot!
Revolver Ocelot: [On phone, unseen] Yes sir. The entire unit was wiped out. Those two are still alive. The vector? Yes sir. FoxDie should become activated soon... Right on schedule. Yes sir. I recovered all of Rex's dummy warhead data... No sir. My cover is intact. Nobody knows who I really am. Yes the DARPA Chief knew my identity but he's been disposed of. Yes. Thank you. Good-bye... Mr. President.
Solid Snake: [after fighting the cyborg ninja, then realizing who he really is] Gray Fox! Colonel, that ninja is Gray Fox. No doubt about it.
Roy Campbell: Ridiculous. You of all people should know he died in Zanzibar.
Naomi: No. He should have died, but he didn't.
Roy Campbell: What?
Naomi: It happened before I joined FOX-HOUND's medical staff. They were using a soldier for their gene therapy experiments.
Roy Campbell: I never heard that.
Naomi: It happened right after you retired. My predecessor, Dr. Clark, was in charge.
Roy Campbell: Dr. Clark?
Naomi: Yes. He started the gene therapy project.
Solid Snake: And where is he now?
Naomi: He was killed in an explosion in his lab two years ago.
Solid Snake: So, what about this soldier?
Naomi: Apparently, for their test subject, they decided to use the body of a soldier who was recovered after the fall of Zanzibar.
Solid Snake: And that was Gray Fox?
Roy Campbell: But, he was already dead!
Naomi: Yes, but they revived him. They fitted him with a prototype exoskeleton and kept him drugged for four years while they experimented on him like a plaything. Today's genome soldiers were born from those experiments.
Roy Campbell: That's the sickest thing I ever heard.
Naomi: They used him to test all sorts of gene therapy techniques.
Solid Snake: Naomi, why didn't you tell us about this sooner?
Naomi: Because it's confidential information.
Solid Snake: Is that the only reason?
Roy Campbell: Naomi, what happened to Gray Fox after that?
Naomi: The record says he died in the explosion.
Roy Campbell: I see. But even if that ninja is Gray Fox, the question is why?
Solid Snake: From what I could tell, he didn't know who he was.
Roy Campbell: Are you saying that he's just a mindless robot?
Solid Snake: I'm not sure, but he seems intent on fighting me to the death. We'll meet again. I know it.
Naomi: So, you'll fight again... until you kill him?
Solid Snake: Hmm. I'd rather not, but maybe that's what he wants.
Solid Snake: [contacting Master Miller via Codec after receiving a call from someone named 'Deepthroat'] Master, does the name Deepthroat mean anything to you?
Master Miller: Deepthroat? What, you mean the guy from Watergate?
Solid Snake: No, but he uses the same name. Whoever he is, he's not part of our operation, but he's been giving me advice by Codec.
Master Miller: What?
Solid Snake: On top of that, he wasn't using burst transmission. It seems he was transmitting from somewhere on this base.
Master Miller: Somewhere on the base?
Solid Snake: Yes.
Master Miller: ...I have no idea who that could be.
Solid Snake: I see.
Solid Snake: I never felt truly alive unless I was staring death in the face.
Sniper Wolf: Snake, I'm near. Can't you sense me near you?
Solid Snake: It's a mistake for a sniper to reveal her location.
Sniper Wolf: Is that right? Well I'm going to send you a love letter, my dear. Do you know what that is? It's a bullet straight from my gun to your heart.
Revolver Ocelot: We're gonna launch that nuke and ride it all the way into history.
Vulcan Raven: You know of the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics?
Solid Snake: Yeah, I know it. You must be a real threat in the "Muktuk Eating" contest.
Vulcan Raven: Yes, you are right.
Revolver Ocelot: Can't you even die right?
[player calls Mei Ling's frequency, and chooses "DO NOT SAVE" 3 times in a row]
Mei Ling: C'mon, Snake, don't call me for no reason!
Sniper Wolf: I was born on the battlefield, raised on the battlefield... Rockets, gunfire, screams... they were my lullabies...
Master Miller: Snake, it's me.
Solid Snake: Master?
Master Miller: It's about Naomi. Turn your monitor off.
Roy Campbell: What about Naomi?
Master Miller: Damn!
Solid Snake: Colonel, is Naomi there?
Roy Campbell: No, she's away. She's taking a short nap.
Solid Snake: Hmm.
Roy Campbell: So, what is this about Naomi?
Master Miller: Okay. Maybe we'd better let the Colonel hear this too.
Solid Snake: Yeah. Go on, Master.
Master Miller: Well, basically, Dr. Naomi Hunter is not Dr. Naomi Hunter at all.
Roy Campbell: What?
Master Miller: I thought her story of her background sounded kind of fishy, so, I checked it out.
Roy Campbell: And?
Master Miller: There is an actual Dr. Naomi Hunter, or I should say, there was one. But, she's not the woman we know. The real Naomi Hunter disappeared somewhere in the Middle East. Our Naomi must have somehow obtained her identification papers.
Roy Campbell: So, then who is she really?
Master Miller: She must be some kind of... spy.
Roy Campbell: A spy?
Master Miller: Yes. Maybe she's been sent to sabotage this operation.
Roy Campbell: Are you saying she's with the terrorists?
Solid Snake: I don't wanna believe it either, but, she is working for FOX-HOUND.
Roy Campbell: So, you think she had a part in the uprising?
Master Miller: Or she could be working with some different group altogether.
Roy Campbell: Different group? It couldn't be...
Master Miller: Place her under arrest.
Roy Campbell: What?
Master Miller: She's betrayed us. She needs to be arrested and interrogated to find out who she's with.
Roy Campbell: If she's one of their spies, then, we're in big trouble.
Solid Snake: What do you mean?
Roy Campbell: Oh, nothing.
Master Miller: Have you let her in on some kind of vital secret or something?
Roy Campbell: ...
Master Miller: Does this have anything to do with the mysterious deaths of the DARPA Chief and the ArmsTech president?
Roy Campbell: I... I have no idea.
Master Miller: Anyway, we cannot allow her to participate any further in this mission.
Roy Campbell: Wait! Wait a minute. Without her, we can't complete this mission.
Solid Snake: I knew it. You're hiding something.
Roy Campbell: Give me some time. I'll try to get it out of her.
Master Miller: Hurry, then. We've got to figure out who she is and what she's doing here.
Roy Campbell: I understand. Snake, give me some time.
Solid Snake: I don't have any time left for you.
Master Miller: Snake, it's about Naomi Hunter.
Solid Snake: Then, you should talk to the Colonel. He's looking into it.
Master Miller: Turn your monitor off.
Solid Snake: [turns off monitor] Okay, it's off. No one else can hear us. Go ahead.
Master Miller: Sorry, but, I didn't want the Colonel to hear.
Solid Snake: Okay, so, what's up?
Master Miller: I've got a good friend in the Pentagon.
Solid Snake: Yeah?
Master Miller: He's the one who told me about it. It looks like the DIA recently developed a new type of assassination weapon.
Solid Snake: An assassination weapon?
Master Miller: Snake, have you ever heard of something called 'FoxDie'?
Solid Snake: No. FoxDie? Liquid and the others were talking about it.
Master Miller: Yeah. It's some kind of virus that-that targets specific people. I don't know all the details, but...
Solid Snake: What are you trying to say?
Master Miller: It's too similar.
Solid Snake: What is?
Master Miller: The cause of death. Didn't the ArmsTech president and the DARPA Chief, I mean, Decoy Octopus, die of something that looked like a heart attack?
Solid Snake: Yeah.
Master Miller: Well, apparently, FoxDie kills its victims by simulating a heart attack.
Solid Snake: No. You're telling me that Naomi was behind it?
Master Miller: Snake, try to remember. Did Naomi give you some kind of injection?
Solid Snake: The nanomachines.
Master Miller: She was in the best position to have done it, but, I don't know what her motive was.
Solid Snake: Does the Colonel know?
Master Miller: I'm not sure, but, he still hasn't questioned her.
Solid Snake: Okay, I'll ask him myself. Colonel, what's new with the Naomi situation?
Roy Campbell: I just placed Naomi under arrest.
Solid Snake: Arrest?
Roy Campbell: She was sending coded messages towards the Alaskan base. I didn't wanna believe it, but, she must be working with the terrorists.
Solid Snake: Are you sure?
Roy Campbell: I'm afraid so. She's being interrogated now.
Solid Snake: What kind of interrogation?
Roy Campbell: Well, I'd like to avoid the rough stuff, but, we don't even have any sodium pentathol here.
Solid Snake: Call me if you find out anything.
Master Miller: So, it's true, isn't it?
Solid Snake: Naomi. I can't believe it.
Master Miller: That means the FoxDie vaccine must be around somewhere.
Solid Snake: Listen, I've got bigger things to worry about.
Master Miller: But, Snake, you might be infected too, you know.
Solid Snake: All I can do is leave it up to the Colonel.
Solid Snake: [contacting Colonel Campbell via Codec after receiving a call from someone named 'Deepthroat'] Colonel, I got a Codec call from someone outside this operation!
Roy Campbell: I know. We were monitoring the call. Mei Ling knows everything about the communications system, so let me have her explain it to you.
Mei Ling: Well, if somebody knows your frequency, they can call you. But, the question is, how did he learn it? It's top-secret information.
Solid Snake: So, you mean someone leaked the information?
Mei Ling: That's the only explanation I can think of.
Solid Snake: Mei Ling, do you know where that transmission originated from?
Mei Ling: I'm sorry. The radio waves were too weak to locate their source, but I'm sure he's near you. Somewhere on the base.
Roy Campbell: Snake, you'll have to go through the minefield to advance.
Roy Campbell: [after having submitted to Ocelot's torture, Snake escapes and makes his way back to where Sniper Wolf had gunned down Meryl. Colonel Campbell then contacts Snake via Codec] Snake, about Meryl.
Solid Snake: Colonel, I'm sorry.
Roy Campbell: Listen to me.
Solid Snake: I wasn't able to protect her.
Roy Campbell: Snake, it's okay. You did what you could. Now, let it rest.
Solid Snake: Colonel...
Roy Campbell: She joined up of her own free will. I'm sure she was prepared for this.
Solid Snake: No, you're wrong.
Roy Campbell: ...?
Solid Snake: Meryl thought she had to become a soldier, thought it was the only way. She said she thought it would bring her closer to her dead father.
Roy Campbell: [surprised] She said that?
Solid Snake: She wasn't ready for real combat. I shouldn't have pushed her so hard. It's all my fault.
Master Miller: That's not like you, Snake.
Roy Campbell: Master? What is it?
Master Miller: Sorry for eavesdropping, but I just couldn't listen anymore.
Solid Snake: Master...
Master Miller: Snake, you can have regrets if you want to. It's only natural, but you can't keep attacking yourself for things that happened in the past. That road leads to madness, believe me.
Mei Ling: He's right. Don't kick yourself. It doesn't suit a legend like you. And besides that, for all we know, Meryl's okay, right?
Solid Snake: Mei Ling...
Roy Campbell: Snake, forget about Meryl. Stop Liquid. That's what Meryl would want, too.
Solid Snake: You're right. Meryl would say the same thing.
Solid Snake: What?
Naomi: Meryl... she's pretty special to you, huh?
Solid Snake: Yes, she's special. There aren't many women like her around.
Naomi: That's not what I meant.
Solid Snake: She's the Colonel's niece, and a combat buddy.
Naomi: Is that all? C'mon...
Solid Snake: This is like a police interrogation.
Naomi: No, I just...
Roy Campbell: I guess it's in the genes.
Solid Snake: The genes? What are you talking about, Colonel?
Roy Campbell: [chuckles] No, I just remembered about Naomi's grandfather. I think Naomi said he rose as high as assistant secretary in the FBI during Edgar Hoover's time.
Solid Snake: Is that right?
Naomi: Yes. Yes, uh... he was, uh, Japanese, and he became a special undercover investigator to nab the mafia.
Master Miller: When was that?
Naomi: Oh, sometime in the '50's, I guess.
Master Miller: Where?
Naomi: Uh, New York, I think.
Master Miller: Naomi, I thought you didn't have any family.
Naomi: Well, I-I researched it after I became an adult. My grandfather was already dead by the time I learned about him. I never even had the chance to meet him.
Roy Campbell: Oh.
Naomi: Snake, good luck.
Roy Campbell: Watch your back, Snake.
Revolver Ocelot: [On phone, unseen] Yes sir. The entire unit was wiped out. Those two are still alive. The vector? Yes sir, FoxDie should become activated soon... Right on schedule. Yes, sir. I recovered all of Rex's dummy warhead data... No, sir. My cover is intact. Nobody knows who I really am. Yes, the DARPA Chief knew my identity, but he's been disposed of. Yes. The inferior one was the winner after all... That's right. Until the very end, Liquid thought he was the inferior one. Yes, sir. I agree completely. It takes a well-balanced individual... such as yourself to rule the world. No, sir. No one knows that you were the third one... Solidus... What should I do about the woman? Yes sir. I'll keep her under surveillance. Yes. Thank you. Good-bye... Mr. President.
