Action movies need to innovate to remain relevant in a crowded genre, blending horror elements to captivate a wider audience. Cult classic action-horror films like Aliens and Predator have stood the test of time, earning them respect as pivotal parts of film history. Compelling characters, intense fight scenes, and terrifying twists make action-horror movies like 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead must-watch films.
Fight scenes, violence, and heroic deeds are all expected in a typical action movie, but some utilize aspects of the horror genre to make the scariest action movies out there. Not strictly horror or action, these films blend genres brilliantly to appeal to a wider range of audiences and push the boundaries of what the typical action movie can be. Although horror isn't for all audiences, these films also tell compelling stories and incorporate strong character development to keep the viewer invested.

Sam Elliot's portrayal of General Thaddeus Ross in Ang Lee's Hulk showcases how effective non-mcu performances can be, making the character a memorable and imposing military figure. Some of the best non-mcu performances set a cinematic precedent for subsequent superhero movies. Others may even enter the MCU in its future, due to the Multiverse Saga and its crossovers.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been celebrated for its numerous compelling performances, there have been several notable examples that exist outside the MCU timeline. The Marvel movie boom of the early 2000s kick-started the modern superhero craze, producing a litany of beloved films with many sterling performances. Many of these have persisted into contemporary Marvel franchises, some of which are directly linked to the McU's future.

Arkane Lyon announces new Blade game at The Game Awards 2023 - an adventure with the iconic vampire hunter in Paris. The trailer reveals little about the game's story but confirms it will be M-rated and a single-player action-adventure title. This exciting new title promises an immersive and mature gaming experience for fans of the Blade franchise.
Arkane Lyon has revealed a new Blade game at The Game Awards 2023. The title will follow Marvel's iconic vampire hunter on an adventure in Paris.
The trailer for Marvel's Blade, which is now available on Marvel Entertainment's YouTube page, didn't give too much away about the game's story other than its location and first glimpse at its protagonist, showing the Daywalker at a barber shop before being called into action and preparing his sword. Oscar winner Mahershala Ali finally broke his silence regarding the current status of Marvel Studios’ long-delayed Blade movie.
Since the project was first announced in July 2019, the Blade reboot has suffered multiple creative setbacks, which started with director Bassam Tariq exiting the project. In the past months, rumors about its tumultuous pre-production have come to light after Ali reportedly requested multiple script changes. During a recent interview with EW, the True Detective star has finally given Marvel fans a hopeful update about his Blade reboot, revealing that he remains committed to the project. This comes after it was rumored that Ali was considering stepping down from the role after an early version of the script had reportedly made him the fourth lead.

Many actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have appeared in other Marvel movies outside of the franchise. Some actors' roles in non-mcu Marvel movies are often overlooked due to the underwhelming performance of those films. The extensive makeup and facial prosthesis used in some roles makes it easy to overlook actors' appearances in other Marvel movies.
Many actors featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have also enjoyed roles in other Marvel movies outside the franchise. Since the very beginning of the McU's movie timeline, the franchise has employed a wealth of actors in order to bring the stories and characters of Marvel Comics to life. However, roles in the MCU aren't mutually exclusive with roles in other Marvel movies, and many actors have actually featured in both the flagship franchise and other unrelated projects. Marvel has apparently been having a very, very hard time rebooting Blade into the MCU, which is kind of strange when you think about it. I mean, how hard is it to crack Blade? The character is pretty simple! He looks cool, he has cool weapons, and he kills vampires. That's it, really. It's not that complicated. And yet, Kevin Feige and company continue to struggle with the project, which is set to star Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali in the lead role of the Daywalker. The project, along with Ali's casting, was first announced in 2019, and it's apparently been all downhill since then.

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

Though Huluween is almost officially over, Hulu is not slowing down at all as the new month approaches! The streamer will head into November with plenty of new additions to un-spook yourself and keep warm, including the new Awkwafina and Sandra Oh-led “Quiz Lady”; Christmas classics like “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” and “The Polar Express,” and much more.
On the TV side, Hulu will have the exclusive two-episode premiere of FX’s limited murder mystery series “A Murder at the End of the World” starring Emma Corrin. “Fargo” fans can also catch the next-day streaming premiere of Season/Year 5, which will star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Frankenstein is one of the most revered and famous horror stories of the last several centuries. The original story by Mary Shelley was first published over 200 years ago in 1818, and in the last 100 years, the character of Frankenstein’s Monster has become a staple of horror cinema. While Frankenstein was first put to film in the form of a short film by J. Searle Dawley in 1910, the most famous iteration of the story wouldn’t hit screens until 1931. That film, directed by James Whale, starred Boris Karloff as the central monster with Colin Clive as Dr. Frankenstein himself. It was the second film in what would become the iconic Universal Monsters franchise, with the first film, Dracula, having been released earlier that year.
Since then, there have been countless iterations of Frankenstein and his monster on screen. Karloff played the monster in three films, and the character has also been...

There could be a contest as to whether there are more unmade Guillermo del Toro projects or more unmade “Star Wars” movies. So it’s not illogical that the two briefly intersected. The filmmaker himself noted, during a Q&a sponsored by Collider, that he was once working on a “Star Wars” movie with screenwriter David S. Goyer set on Tatooine. The project was indeed a would-be “Star Wars Story” centered on the crime lord Jabba the Hutt.
Goyer previously confirmed the project in the abstract on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he stated that “There was just a lot of behind [the scenes] stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time. But it’s a cool script.”
Del Toro confirmed at the Q&a that it was indeed about “the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt.” He noted: “We were doing a lot of stuff, and then it’s not my property,...

There isn’t another filmmaker quite like Guillermo del Toro.
While he’s been working since 1993, he’s only made 12 films. But each one of those films is so singularly well-crafted and emotionally resonant, that they stand out as being unlike any other films being made today (or really at any other time). Del Toro stuffs these bejeweled treasures, made with clockwork intricacy, full of ghosts and ghouls and phantasmagorical creatures. But they are also populated with human characters who sport actual and psychic scars, made whole or irreparably damaged by their encounter with the unknown. Whether in English or Spanish, with the tiniest budget or the most expansive, del Toro maintains his creative vision through it all.
It’s with this in mind that we look back at his entire filmography, from the least to most mind-altering.

Guillermo del Toro didn't direct Pacific Rim: Uprising because he had to leave to helm The Shape of Water when the Toronto soundstages were lost. He has never watched the sequel because he says it's like watching home movies from an ex-wife - terrible if it's good and worse if it's bad. The final script for Pacific Rim: Uprising was very different from Del Toro's original vision, although some elements remained.
Guillermo del Toro has revealed why he didn't direct – and never watched – Pacific Rim: Uprising. Guillermo del Toro has been one of the most beloved filmmakers in all of fandom, and perhaps all of cinema, for the past 30 years. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, del Toro was fascinated with the fantastical at an early age, turning his childhood obsessions into a long creative career that has celebrated the monstrous, the grotesque, and the otherworldly. His is an aesthetic that gives the macabre with a sense of beauty and poetry.
From the start, del Toro’s passion for horror, science fiction, and fantasy in all their myriad forms—movies, TV, literature, comics, art—came through unapologetically, making him not just seem like he was one of us, a fan, but an uber fan; one of us who got to realize the visions and dreams that sparked inside his imagination. He even owns a house that is stuffed to the brim with all the tangible objects of his obsession,...

Back in 2013, Guillermo del Toro revealed that Lucasfilm had approached him about directing the new entry in the Star Wars franchise (which turned out to be Star Wars: The Force Awakens), but he had to pass on it because he was too busy working on other projects. Four years later, he confirmed there had been further talks about him doing something in the Star Wars universe. Now, during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, screenwriter David Goyer (who worked with del Toro on Blade II) said that he and del Toro had been collaborating on a Star Wars project, but it ended up being shelved. Like several other Star Wars projects have been in recent years.
Goyer said (with thanks to IndieWire for the transcription), “I wrote an unproduced Star Wars movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct. That was about four years ago. There was...

This is why we can't have nice things. Even though Guillermo del Toro has created some of the most indelible movies we've ever seen, there's an even longer list of unmade projects that the famed Mexican filmmaker has been attached to at one point or another over the decades ... but was never able to bring over the finish line. Sadly, most (if not all) of these will never come to fruition, leaving the rest of us to endlessly daydream about the possibilities. From "The Hobbit" to "At the Mountains of Madness" to his much scarier version of "Haunted Mansion," every del Toro fan remains haunted by what could have been.
His latest brush with franchise glory will come as no surprise to those who've been following the bread crumbs throughout the last several years. In 2015, we covered some intriguing quotes about what he'd do should he ever find himself in...

Actor Norman Reedus has been in the spotlight for nearly three decades. Reedus began his career on screen in the 1990s, landing his first major film role in Guillermo Del Toro's 1997 film "Mimic." Over the course of the late 1990s and 2000s, Reedus built his résumé, starring in TV shows like "Charmed" and "Law & Order: Svu" and box-office hits like "Blade II" and "American Gangster." By 2010, the actor quickly became a household name for his role as Daryl Dixon in "The Walking Dead," which he appeared in for the show's 11 seasons. Most recently, Reedus is reprising his role as Daryl Dixon in the AMC spinoff series, "The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon," set to premiere on Sept. 10.

Some Marvel movies that were met with low critical reception are actually worth watching and have unique qualities that set them apart from the typical superhero formula. Films like "Venom" and "The Incredible Hulk" may have received lower ratings, but they offer enjoyable viewing experiences with interesting characters and darker tones. Despite their low scores on Rotten Tomatoes, movies like "The Punisher" and "Blade II" deliver solid action and memorable performances that make them better than their ratings suggest.
Marvel has several undeniably classic movies in its catalogue that were met with critical and commercial success on release, but some projects fail to connect with critics despite being well worth a watch. Superhero movies overall have faced somewhat justified criticism in recent years for falling into a predictable formula, but that formula generally - though not always - guarantees that a movie is at least reasonably decent. However, before films...

Travis Scott recently put himself forward for the currently vacant composer role on Marvel Studios' upcoming Blade reboot.
Rapper, singer/songwriter, and producer Scott expressed interest in overseeing Blade's score in a post on X. "Woke up thinking I would love to do the soundtrack to Blade," he wrote. Scott is certainly no stranger to film productions, having starred in, and developed music for, 2021's Gully. The musician also signed a movie development deal with independent studio A24 in August 2021. That said, there's no indication that Scott and Marvel Studios have actually discussed the possibility of him contributing to Blade's soundtrack at this stage.

I'll never forget watching the series premiere of AMC's The Walking Dead with my family on Halloween night back in 2010 (the premiere aired directly after Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake), so it's hard to believe that nearly 13 years later, the entire series is coming out on Blu-ray and DVD from Lionsgate. As the titular character of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon washes ashore in France, he'll be met by friends and foes that'll determine the outcome of his road home. Daryl might be enough to reel old and new Walking Dead fans to the new spinoff series in the franchise, but it'll be the fresh faces of supporting characters that'll make them stay.
To fit with the setting, the majority of Daryl Dixon's cast are French or British, creating an authentic experience for viewers. Given his American roots, Daryl will obviously be the fish out of water that'll be forced to adjust to the language barrier and culture shock, but having the dead as a common enemy might take precedence. Among the cast are familiar faces from big franchises and newcomers who might be defining Walking Dead actors in years to come.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter director, André Øvredal, revealed why Guillermo del Toro wasn’t able to guide him through the production of Universal Pictures’ latest Dracula movie.
Prior to its theatrical release, the film adaptation of The Last Voyage of the Demeter shifted from one studio to another for over a decade. Because of this, multiple filmmakers and stars were previously attached to it, including Guillermo del Toro. However, due to scheduling conflicts, del Toro decided to give up his directorial duties on The Last Voyage of the Demeter. His Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark collaboration with Øvredal led him to recommend the Norwegian filmmaker as the new director for the Dracula movie.

The following contains spoilers for The Last Voyage of the Demeter, now playing in theaters.
In The Last Voyage of the Demeter, fans are treated to one of the scariest chapters in Bram Stoker's Dracula -- something Stephen King offered high praise to. This story focuses on the ship bringing the body of the vampire to England, only for the being to sneak out and begin devouring the crew. Part of it is due to Dracula's innate need to suck blood and survive. Food aside, the other aspect is the game: he's hunting for pleasure.
It leads to a stunning finale, where Clemens (Corey Hawkins) and the others try to set a trap for the winged apex predator. However, Dracula knows a thing or two about traps, given he's been manipulating everyone all along. With that in mind, let's break down the ending and what happens after Dracula emerges from the shadows.

This weekend's major new release in theaters is "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," which has finally made its way to the big screen after spending literal decades stuck in development hell. Unfortunately, it feels a little bit like Universal Pictures isn't giving the big horror flick the push one might expect for a Dracula movie with an A-list cast. But a couple of cinematic icons in the form of Stephen King and Guillermo del Toro are out here spreading the gospel, as they've both had very nice things to say about the film.

Long before I discovered the joys of horror movies, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a formative obsession of mine. I often wonder if Tmnt and its variety of imaginative creatures served as a gateway to the genre of sorts. Living up to its title, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has the potential to do the same for a new generation.
Whether you’re a genre veteran interested in revisiting thematically similar offerings or a newcomer looking to branch out into some of Tmnt’s inspirations, here are six horror movies to watch after you see Mutant Mayhem.
1. The Fly
Mutant Mayhem villain Superfly is a fresh spin on the classic Tmnt character Baxter Stockman, who debuted in the original Mirage comics and has appeared in many other iterations since, from animated to live action. As a brilliant but mad scientist turned mutant human-fly hybrid, the character was clearly inspired by The Fly.

The Avengers have become the most reliable and powerful team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to their many members like Thor and Captain Marvel, as well as their feats, such as stopping Loki and killing Thanos. But since the team has existed for years, their growth merited a change of scenery, which meant that the team had to relocate from the heart of New York City to upstate New York in the Avengers Compound. From there, the team was able to practice, plan and better monitor threats around the world. But the jury's still out on whether this was ultimately the best decision.

While much of the initial fanbase that helped turn Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a pop culture phenomenon aged out following the original cartoon (1987-1996) and live action movies (1990-1993), the property has continued to flourish with reboots in TV, film, and comics every few years.
If the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has you interested in exploring various versions of Tmnt, there’s no better place for a horror fan to start than Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series that aired for five seasons between 2012 and 2017.

Horror movies have explored various arenas of the genre. However, monster movies have proven to be one of the most versatile of all, as movies like Frankenstein and The Wolf Man represented the struggles of humanity, fear of death and a desire for acceptance. In modern cinema, director Guillermo del Toro has become one of the best examples of a director who tapped into this style of monster movie to introduce the audiences to exciting stories that are as scary as they are tragic.
While Hellboy and The Shape of Water showed del Toro's range in genres like action and romance, these "monster" movies also featured some truly impressive and scary creations. It isn't an exaggeration to say that there's no director like Guillermo del Toro. His dark style and fantasy worlds have resulted in some of the best movies. Marvel's upcoming Blade movie should hold onto some aspects of the Wesley Snipes-led Blade movies, while modifying other elements. Released in 1998, Blade holds the distinction of being the first Marvel Comics-based movie to strike box office gold, with Wesley Snipes playing the movie's vampire hunter. Known as "The Daywalker," Blade possesses all the powers inherent to vampires while being immune to all of their weaknesses, save for their bloodlust, which Blade must suppress with a specially-made serum.
Blade II and Blade: Trinity would follow on the success of Blade, while the Daywalker is set to officially join the MCU in Marvel's Blade, with Mahershala Ali to portray the McU's Blade. The first two Blade movies remain fondly remembered superhero action-horror hits, though Blade: Trinity stands as an unfortunate letdown, but all three movies have many lessons to pass on to the McU's take on Blade. The first two Blade movies remain fondly remembered superhero action-horror hits, though Blade: Trinity stands as an unfortunate letdown, but all three movies have many lessons to pass on to the McU's take on Blade. Here are five...

Donnie Yen was once set to have a major role in The Expendables 2, but here's why he ultimately passed. Despite being one of the world's greatest martial arts stars, Yen had a tough time breaking into Hollywood. He was shamefully wasted in the likes of Blade 2 and Highlander: Endgame, and it wasn't until recent years that the likes of John Wick: Chapter 4 showed him in his best light.
Given that the brief of The Expendables movies is to gather the best action stars from around the world, it's curious that Yen has yet to make an appearance. Of course, other action stars turned down The Expendables too, including Jackie Chan and Kurt Russell. Unlike the others, Yen actually Was cast in The Expendables 2, but dropped out before the sequel started filming. It turns out there were a couple of reasons behind that decision.

All too often, sequels based on superhero films from Marvel and DC don't match up to the success of their predecessors. For decades, various production studios have developed feature films based on characters from both Marvel Comics and DC Comics, but while some films have had a massive cultural impact, others have been rather disappointing. This onus usually falls on sequels to some of the more popular superhero films, as sequels have the harder job of delivering a solid story while trying to live up to the success of the original film.
As the largest superhero film franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe perhaps has the most offenders when it comes to disappointing sequels. Even so, Fox's X-Men franchise, Sony's Spider-Man Universe (and previous Spider-Man adaptations), and DC's long cinematic history have produced some lackluster projects that are usually better left unmentioned. While it's often more appealing to discuss the...

Screen Rant is happy to reveal a first look at a new Blade collectible statue from Premium Collectibles Studio. This Blade 1:3 Museum Pose collectible statue is a unique take on the iconic character, based on the vampire hunter’s look in the game Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Pre-orders for the statue begin on May 25th. Blade himself has long been a popular Marvel Comics character and has been the subject of a beloved trilogy of films as well as an upcoming Blade MCU reboot.
The 1998 Wesley Snipes-led Blade film shot the character of Blade into the mainstream and, in many ways, became a template for the modern superhero film. Blade II is widely regarded as an even better film than the original, upping the action and the humor of the original series. Since the 2004 trilogy capper Blade: Trinity, Blade has been conspicuously absent from the big screen. Luckily, that...

Donnie Yen once had a cool take on The Expendables and it really needs to happen. Yen is a legend of martial arts cinema, from Once Upon a Time in China II to Hero or the Ip Man movies. Sadly, his early experiences with Hollywood yielded disappointing results; he was tragically wasted in Blade 2 and proved to be one of the few reasons to watch 2000's Highlander: Endgame. Thankfully, recent years have seen American studios giving him worthy roles, with John Wick: Chapter 4's Caine easily being his best English-language project to date.
The Expendables movie franchise was formed with the mission brief of uniting some of the biggest action stars in the world. While it pulled in an impressive number of icons - including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li and Harrison Ford - it missed some big names too. Yen was a near-miss, as he was once set...
