Anachronisms

The weathered and worn Pontiac Trans Am that Daniel Desario drives is a design that was available no earlier than 1979. Since the show takes place in 1980, it is highly unlikely that a high school student from a low-income family could afford what was then a fairly new car - and almost equally unlikely that it would look so aged within one year.

When various characters enter the liquor store throughout the show, advertisements for Zima (a malt based alcoholic drink) and SoBe (an energy drink) are visible in the background. Both of these are quintessential late 90's brands and would not have been available in 1980.

Many of the hairstyles/clothing/slang are of the present time (1999-2000) and not the correct time. (1980-81)

The Allan White character has a modern-skin head haircut. This would be the correct haircut if he were a punk rock fan but he's portrayed as a wimpy bully who's been abused by his father. Boys of the time had the long-feathered hairstyle.

The bottles and cans of Stroh's being drunk in the series are the present day (1999) model and not the correct 1980 style.

While the beer signs for Budweiser, Miller, Busch Bavarian, and Olympia are correct the Stroh's Beer sign has the current 1999 label and not the correct 1980 label.

Continuity

In the opening credits when Nick Andopolis has his school picture taken, he is wearing a black blazer over a T-shirt. When the black and white yearbook pictures are shown at the end of the opening credits, the blazer has disappeared and he is wearing only a long-sleeved shirt.

Factual errors

At the end of the opening credits, a yearbook shows Nick, Lindsay, and Sam's pictures listed in a row. However, Nick's last name is Andopolis, and Lindsay and Sam's last name is Weir, meaning they would have been in opposite ends of the yearbook. Also, Lindsay and Sam would not be placed near each other, as they are in different grades (she is a junior and he is a freshman).

Revealing mistakes

During the credits of the HD remastered 16:9 widescreen version, actors James Franco & Jason Segel are visible rubbing their eyes before it's their turn to sit for their class photo (presumably to try to make their characters look high). This area would not have been visible during the original run when the series was presented in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
