North America, including the United States, has always been seen as a land of immigrants or descendants of immigrants, with even the indigenous population thought to have originally emigrated from Asia. Most of those immigrants came to the US in the hope of freedom. One such story of immigration which begins in the mid-nineteenth century is that of newlywed Polish-Ukrainians Theodor and Maria Kanowski - they representing the every man - who felt like they were Americans upon their arrival. Their story and the stories of the naturalized American descendants is one of gratitude to their adopted land as well as that want to have a good life as Americans. Their story is like that of many other immigrant families, with the names, places and specific details changed. A roll call of famous Americans who were not born in the US is presented. On May 21, 1944, I Am an American Day was celebrated across the land, it made possible only by the immigrant families that make up America, those immigrant families which comprise all Americans.
