According to The Wrap, Pruitt Taylor-Vince has been cast as Jonathan Kent in James Gunn’s Superman. I can’t say that’s who I expected to play Clark Kent’s adoptive human father in the movie, but I’ve always been a big fan of the actor, who has appeared in everything from The X-Files to Deadwood to The Walking Dead.
Pruitt Taylor-Vince will join the long line of actors who have brought Jonathan Kent to life in movies and television, including Glenn Ford in the original Superman movie, John Schneider in Smallville, Kevin Costner in Man of Steel, and many more. As I mentioned above, Taylor-Vince might not feel like the obvious choice for the role, but he’s a true talent and I hope fans give him a chance.

The CBS crime drama Cold Case was vastly underrated, with a stellar cast and thoughtfully crafted episodes. CBS is reportedly developing a new Cold Case series, which would bring back at least one actor. The potential Cold Case revival can capitalize on renewed interest in cold cases and provide a unique TV experience.
A Cold Case revival might finally get the CBS crime drama the recognition it's always deserved -- but more than that, it's exactly what would spice up a predictable genre. Detective Lilly Rush and her colleagues were a breath of fresh air when Cold Case premiered in 2003, and they developed a loyal fan base over seven seasons and more than 150 episodes because they didn't do things the procedural way.

Taylor Swift has yet to direct a feature film, despite having directed music videos and the Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions concert documentary in the past. Swift also wrote and directed the highly-praised All Too Well: The Short Film, proving she could pull off directing a feature film. The commercial success of The Eras Tour movie shows that Swift is a major force in the entertainment industry and would be a bankable film director to invest in.
Following the enormous success of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert movie, there's still one feat the multi-faceted artist has yet to accomplish in her long-spanning career. Although Swift had previously released concert films before The Eras Tour movie, none came close to its acclaim, popularity or success, nor were they given theatrical runs. Like the record-breaking world tour itself, The Eras Tour movie marked a huge new milestone in Swift's career.

CBS's Elsbeth made a splash with its debut, but afterward, audiences had to wait two months for more.
When it returned, it established itself as a quirky, lighthearted murder mystery series, though there is a darker overarching plot surrounding the lawyer's secret investigation into her new boss.
By now, it's clear this series is nothing like The Good Wife despite being a spinoff, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's lost its way.
Elsbeth is far more formulaic than The Good Wife, so it may appeal to a different audience. The Good Wife was a dark satire (not necessarily funny) about complex legal issues and the sacrifices people made to gain political points. Elsbeth is none of that.
The title character was a quirky attorney on The Good Wife, and as expected, she's the same on Elsbeth. She also is the lead in a cozy mystery show, which may not...

Cold Case is getting the reboot treatment at CBS. Following the revival of CSI, it's been revealed that the network has put into development a reboot of Cold Case, another crime procedural from Jerry Bruckheimer Television.
Per Deadline, negotiations are currently underway for the Cold Case reboot series, which comes from original series creator Meredith Stiehm. The new show will serve as a sequel series to the original, set 15 years after the series finale that was aired in 2010. Revealing a big change in location, as the original show was set in Philadelphia, the plan is for the reboot to follow a "new team of tenacious detectives who investigate cold cases across the Southwest." While that implies an all-new cast of characters, it would seem that special appearances of original cast members might still be possible, given that it's set in the same world.

CBS is looking to reopen Cold Case. A reboot of the crime procedural, which aired for seven seasons from 2003 to 2010, is currently in development at the Eye Network, our sister site Deadline reports.
Fifteen years after the original series ended, this new iteration would follow an entirely different group of detectives dedicated to investigating unsolved crimes. Though additional details are being kept under wraps, one confirmed change from the original series is its setting; the reboot would take place in the Southwest, whereas the original was set in Philadelphia.

Exclusive: After bringing back CSI: Crime Scene Investigation with CSI: Vegas, CBS is looking to revive another Jerry Bruckheimer Television-produced crime procedural from the 2000s. The network is in negotiations with Warner Bros. TV for a reboot of Cold Case, which aired on CBS for seven seasons from 2003-2010, Deadline has learned. The followup comes from the series’ creator/executive producer Meredith Stiehm.

This is a new location as the original Cold Case was set in Philadelphia. The move would allow the potential new series to introduce a new group of characters as they tackle unsolved homicides.

Smart attire, dazzlingly bright weather, and the unmistakable sound of The Who's piercingly energetic "Won't Get Fooled Again" is the starter kit for the first spin-off to CSI, entitled CSI: Miami. The program came to fruition in 2002 and ran for a solid 10 seasons, also making it across the pond to the UK and becoming a celebrated television series there.
Though CSI: Miami was predominantly crime-fighting, viewers got an insight into individual characters' backgrounds and their relationships. Since The CW revamped its schedule, the football drama All American remains one of the last originals.
Since its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, was also renewed and is scheduled to air sometime in the summer of 2024, it’s not overall surprising they want to capitalize on both.
It’s not uncommon for a TV to expand its universe into spinoffs. Most often, procedural-type franchises such as CSI, Law & Order, and the One Chicago Universe have done it.
However, we’ve seen teen shows do it successfully, including The Vampire Diaries universe on The CW and The Fosters transitioning into Good Trouble on Freeform.
All American and All American: Homecoming are succeeding the way they are. Do we need additional spinoffs?
What is All American About?
All American was inspired by the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger. Daniel Ezra portrays the fictional lead role of Spencer James.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation reinvented the procedural television series when it debuted in 2000. The forensic science investigation series follows a team of crime scene investigators who assist the Las Vegas Police Department on some truly bizarre cases in the Sin City. CSI had a successful 15-season run and spawned multiple spinoffs and a currently airing follow-up series CSI: Vegas.
With such an extensive run on television, many characters have been introduced on CSI. Over the course of 15 seasons, several stand out from the crowd as the characters that made the series the success it is known to be. These 10 characters are synonymous with the series itself.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation was groundbreaking for not including the genius detective trope, focusing instead on realistic forensic analysis. The series influenced the genre by combining realism with character development, paving the way for more realistic police procedurals on TV. CSI's enduring popularity and impact on crime procedurals can be attributed to its refreshing approach of ignoring the overused genius detective trope.
Most crime procedurals rely on one specific trope, but CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's biggest strength was that it skipped that trope completely. The original series in the CSI franchise ran for 15 seasons and spawned five spin-offs. The series followed a team of forensic investigators in Las Vegas who used data they gathered from crime scenes to solve murders, assaults, and other violent crimes. Many of CSI's best cases were as gruesome as they were challenging, earning the series both praise and condemnation for its depiction of police work.

CSI: Miami saw many main characters leave, including Tim "Speed" Speedle, whose carelessness led to his tragic death in season 3. Speed died due to a lack of maintenance on his sidearm, which allowed an attacker to shoot him in a heartbreaking scene with Horatio. Despite actor Rory Cochrane's amicable departure from the show, he felt Speed's death was "pretty lame" and could have been more imaginative.

CSI had 3 shows airing at the same time between 2004 & 2012, with CSI, CSI: Miami, and CSI: NY running concurrently. Some of the best CSI moments happened between 2004 & 2012, with multiple crossovers and memorable episodes each week. CSI never had 3 shows airing concurrently again after 2012, as the franchise shrank down, leading to the revival of CSI: Vegas in 2021.
The CSI universe began 24 years ago, but the franchise reached its peak during eight years in which it had all of its best shows on the air concurrently. While shared universes had existed on TV long before CSI, what the 2000 crime procedural accomplished cannot be taken for granted. CSI built a solid universe with spinoffs and crossovers while also delivering great standalone shows for multiple years, even though not everything about Crime Scene Investigation has aged well. There have been five CSI shows since the inception of the franchise, including three spinoffs and a revival.

It seems like every procedural show has a slow-burn pairing. CSI teased Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle for seven seasons before they officially started dating.
Josh Folsom (Matt Lauria) and Allie Rajan (Mandeep Dhillon) have danced around their relationship for three seasons. Has the endless teasing of their romance become too much, or do you enjoy Josh and Allie's relationship?
If someone had asked that question in CSI: Vegas Season 2, I would have responded that the love triangle with Serena was a horrible look, along with teasing their relationship. However, the two of them now stand a chance at a real relationship.
Josh and Allie worked right away as partners, and there was believable sexual tension between them. They were billed as a young Grissom and Sara in many ways, though long-time CSI fans didn't appreciate that.
Allie was more methodical and tightly wound and needed to learn to experience...

Episode proves CSI: Vegas isn't reliant on tech gimmicks. Inside jokes add fun, but Penny's subplot feels late. Beau and Catherine still struggle to mesh as partners.
The following contains major spoilers from CSI: Vegas Season 3, Episode 5, "It Was Automation," which debuted Sunday, March 24 on CBS.
The CSI franchise hasn't been afraid to try odd things, and CSI: Vegas Season 3 takes a surprising turn with "It Was Automation," which asks viewers whether or not a high-tech robot is a murder weapon or the actual perpetrator. This isn't even the weirdest episode of the show (that's still the clowns from Season 1), nor is it the most original. But it works because writer Dave Metzger is having a ridiculous amount of fun with the most basic of technothriller ideas.
In "It Was Automation," Robert Cuevas is killed during a factory night shift -- despite being the sole human in the building. Meanwhile,...

But it works because writer Dave Metzger is having a ridiculous amount of fun with the most basic of technothriller ideas.
In "It Was Automation," Robert Cuevas is killed during a factory night shift -- despite being the sole human in the building. Meanwhile,...

Quentin Tarantino is one of our most renowned cinephiles, as illustrated by his encyclopedic knowledge of film history, genres, and Hollywood stars. He is mostly known for creating audacious films such as "Pulp Fiction" and the "Kill Bill" series. While he has co-directed other movies (such as "Four Rooms" and "Sin City"), it is Tarantino's originals that have left a distinct impact on popular culture.
But did you know that Tarantino has also dabbled in television directing? As "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood" demonstrated, he is just as savvy about television as he is about film, with a wide knowledge of its unique ecosystem and history. He brought this deep appreciation of television to his work on the eerie two-part season 5 finale of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" entitled "Grave Danger" in 2005. When the Los Angeles Times asked the wildly creative director if he felt "trapped by working within the confines of network television,...

There are various reasons why people act the way they do, and that sentiment applies to those in the business of fighting crime. Settle in armchair detectives of the early 2010s, one of the best minds in the California Bureau of Investigations is back to making crime solving a lot easier. Created by Bruno Heller, and a key member of CBS’ formidable Thursday lineup, alongside Survivor and CSI at the time of its launch - which was massively successful - The Mentalist ran for seven seasons, from 2008, before airing its series finale in February 2015. Nearly a decade later, the series is set to stream on Hulu from March 25.

Oscar-winning actress Patricia Arquette chaired a career masterclass this afternoon at Series Mania in Lille, France, where she served as this year’s guest of honor.
Topics up for discussion during the session ranged from Arquette’s childhood growing up on a “hippie” commune with her parents in rural Virginia alongside her career as an actress, working with filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Richard Linklater, and David Lynch.
“He gives you a lot of freedom,” Arquette said of Lynch, whom she worked with on his 1997 surrealist feature Lost Highway.
Lynch’s Lost Highway, like many of his films of the 90s, is a project focused on gender, sexuality, and sensuality. In the pic — which also stars Bill Pullman — Arquette’s character is involved in a prolonged nude scene. ‘Superman & Lois’ has garnered praise as one of CW’s top superhero shows. Despite CW’s restructuring and cancelation of many projects, ‘Superman & Lois’ secured its season 4 renewal shortly before the season 3 finale. Although loosely connected to the Arrowverse, the show has distinguished itself from other CW superhero series, which have faced criticism in recent years.
Season 4 has been confirmed as the show’s final season, with reduced episodes, a smaller main cast, and a smaller writing team due to budget constraints. Despite these changes, an iconic character, Jimmy Olsen, is set to appear, with Douglas Smith cast in the role according to TVLine.
In the show, Jimmy is depicted as an outgoing young adult who is known for being the life of the party at work. Despite working closely with Clark, he struggles to break through Clark’s reserved demeanor. Unaware of Clark’s secret identity as Superman, Jimmy is determined to befriend him.

‘Superman & Lois’ is often touted as being one of the best CW’s superhero-based shows. This is why even following CW restructuring after many projects were written off, ‘Superman & Lois’ managed to score its season 4 renewal just weeks prior to the season 3 finale. Although unofficially a part of Arrowverse, the show managed to distance itself from other CW’s similar projects that were regarded as straight-up bad in the last few years, especially looking back at the disappointing Flash finale.
A few months ago it was confirmed that Season 4 would be the show’s last, even though the viewership remained steady, it wasn’t nearly enough to justify a high CGI budget. Season 4 is set to return with fewer episodes, with much of its main cast missing and a much smaller writers team. But the show must go on and so one iconic character will reportedly appear in the show.

The original CSI changed the team's leader multiple times, unlike the Miami and NY spinoffs. Miami, NY, and Cyber maintained their main characters throughout their shows, although Cyber only ran for two seasons and welcomed D.B. Russell in season 2. Keeping the same protagonist made the CSI's spinoffs distinct from the original show
There is one thing that made CSI, also known as CSI: Las Vegas, different from all the other spinoffs, especially compared to CSI: Miami and CSI: NY. One of the most influential TV shows of its era, CSI ran for 15 seasons and led to three spinoffs as well as one revival, which is currently airing. The CSI universe once had three shows airing at the same time, with new cases in Vegas, Miami, and New York every week. While the original Crime Scene Investigation is widely regarded as the best CSI show, the spinoffs helped build the franchise’s legacy.

The following contains major spoilers for CSI: Vegas Season 3, Episode 4, "Health and Wellness," which debuted Sunday, March 17 on CBS. It also contains discussion of cannibalism.
Having concluded its ongoing story arc, the first wholly standalone episode of CSI: Vegas Season 3 is "Health and Wellness," which puts more focus on its case of the week than any issues at the Las Vegas Crime Lab. In fact, the crime lab is secondary to what happens at the scene of its investigation. This pivot also allows the show to finally give some sizeable screen time to Allie Rajan, after Mandeep Dhillon's character was placed in more of a supporting role at the start of the season.
Allie has proven to be an excellent character in the CSI franchise -- both in what she brings to it individually and in her developing relationship with Josh Folsom. She is the Catherine to Folsom's...

CSI franchise set the blueprint for shared universes with crossover episodes between four different shows, captivating millions of viewers. Each CSI spinoff, including CSI: Miami and CSI: NY, was introduced through backdoor pilot episodes within the original CSI series. The "CSI Trilogy" crossover event in 2009 brought together characters from all three original shows, proving the franchise's enduring popularity.
Shared universes may have become the norm for popular franchises, but the CSI crossover episodes were common in the shows before so many movies were doing it. The CSI franchise started in 2000 with CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, a show that later would also be known as CSI: Las Vegas. The story about a team of forensic scientists working to solve the strangest cases in Las Vegas was simple but interesting enough to create a thrilling show that would air for 15 years and see three spinoffs and a revival, CSI: Vegas.

"All in the Family" might've been Norman Lear's finest half-hour as a sitcom producer, but I'm not sure he ever put a funnier show on the airwaves than "The Jeffersons." For 11 seasons, Sherman Hemsley's dry-cleaning magnate George Jefferson and Isabel Sanford's good-hearted Louise "Weezy" Jefferson led a stellar cast that delivered edgy-for-network-television laughs revolving around race, class, gender, and whatever happened to be grinding the hot-headed George's gears that particular week. It was the African-American answer to "All in the Family" (on which the characters of George and Weezy originated), and might actually be more shocking today for its fearless deployment of the n-word (particularly early in the series' run).
And if you're making a list of the most memorable theme songs in television history, "The Jeffersons" better be in the top five. Anyone who grew up watching the show in prime time or via syndication should...

Whenever a television series passes that fifth season threshold, it becomes vital for producers to keep things fresh without veering away from what viewers love about this particular show. This is especially true for law enforcement procedurals. You think there are only so many ways people can be killed, and a finite number of methods to solve said murders? Think again. And if you're a writer on one of these shows, you better think extra hard.
Over the 34-and-counting years of its existence, the "Law & Order" franchise (read our season ranking here) has addressed this issue by building episodes around actual, ripped-from-the-headlines crimes. It's gotten to the point that when a murder becomes national news, you immediately wonder how "Law & Order" will adapt it.

[This story contains spoilers from the two-part season premiere of Manhunt.]
In an era of TV police and crime series like CSI and The Killing, using the forensic investigation of a crime scene, including DNA and fingerprints, to help find a killer and solve a murder is commonplace.
So Monica Beletsky, the creator of Apple TV+’s Manhunt miniseries, had a challenge when adapting the pursuit of Abraham Lincoln’s killer as a true-crime detective thriller, because Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, and the 12-day hunt for John Wilkes Booth that followed, took place well before real-life forensic science and the gathering of evidence at crime scenes had been established.
“I love the idea of, how do you find this needle in a haystack, this man who could be anywhere in North America, when you don’t have a phone, you don’t have cars or video cameras? There’s no 24-hour news,” Beletsky explains to the The Hollywood Reporter.

From its premiere on CBS in 2000, CSI entertained audiences with its stories of brutal crimes and the team who solved them in Las Vegas. While most other crime shows at the time focused on detective work, CSI gave viewers a different perspective. It focused on the brilliant minds analyzing forensic evidence and using science to uncover who their suspect was. It ran for 15 seasons, coming to an end in 2015, but led to three spin-offs, as well as a revival, CSI: Las Vegas in 2021.

Like fellow character actors Ann Dowd and Jackie Earle Haley, the perennial supporting star put in over a decade of solid work on screen before he was recognized by mainstream viewers. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Dastmalchian popped up on everything from CSI to ER to Twin Peaks, while his big-screen credits...

If there’s one thing you can count on in a Ryuhei Kitamura horror film, it’s the copious amounts of bloodshed and gore. With Kitamura, gore is most definitely an artform. Based on Clive Barker’s 1984 short story of the same name, 2008 film The Midnight Meat Train follows a photographer obsessed with dark subject matter. He gets in over his head when he discovers a serial killer that butchers unsuspecting night commuters in grisly fashion.
There’s probably not many movies as aptly titled as this one. There’s a lot of human meat, blood, brain matter, and limbs being carved up on the late-night subway train in this horror movie. Bradley Cooper stars as Leon Kaufman, the photographer that stumbles upon and then becomes obsessed with the ruthless serial killer. His concerned girlfriend Maya, a character not in the original story, is played by Leslie Bibb. But the...

NCIS has been part of the television landscape for the past two decades.
Following a two-episode backdoor pilot on Jag in 2003, the redundantly named Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service debuted in the fall of that year.
Although it started slowly ratings-wise in its first couple of seasons, a franchise soon was born.
Now in its 21st season, NCIS has produced more than 450 episodes and six spinoff series, a record unmatched in TV history (although Law & Order fans doubtless will quibble).
Maybe now, shortly after the series said goodbye to its second-most popular character on NCIS Season 21 Episode 2, would be a good time for a hiatus.
That's insane, you say, what with two new spinoffs in the pipeline.
Look back fondly
Let's start with the fact that every day, on cable and streaming, fans can watch their favorite episodes from the golden years of NCIS, back before Abby, Tony, Ziva,...

It was business as usual as the series' four-episode arc about Will's paternity ended.
Angie returned to work on Will Trent Season 2 Episode 3, and her partnership with Michael was stronger than ever as they dealt with a sauna murder that was too close to home for Michael. Meanwhile, Will's views on religion and faith were tested with a complicated murder and missing woman case.
They've been pulling out seasoned guest stars and tying in emotional character arcs. Tonight is no exception.
While the series has moved on to business as usual, Will has not moved on yet. He still had visions of Cricket and avoided going to the office unless he was called into a case.
It was endearing that he and Betty went to support Angie when she passed her physical, but she saw right through his facade.
Angie: Have you talked to anyone about the explosion?
Will: No.

CSI: Vegas provides opportunities for early CSI characters to wrap up their character arcs in the long-running franchise. Actors returning for reboots and spin-offs is common in network television, giving CSI: Vegas a wealth of characters and episodes to draw from. Iconic characters like Gil Grissom, Sara Sidle, and Catherine Willows have already made appearances in CSI: Vegas, setting a precedent for more to return.
The CSI franchise is well-known for its many spin-offs and crossovers, and with the prominence of the latest series, CSI: Vegas, there are new opportunities for early CSI characters to join the show. Actors returning for a reboot or spin-off is common practice in network television, and a franchise like CSI is rife with opportunities because of how long-running its shows are. Within the franchise, the shows include the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, and the little-known CSI: Cyber.

The following contains major spoilers from CSI: Vegas Season 3, Episode 3, "Rat Packed," which debuted Sunday, March 3 on CBS.
One of the reasons that the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation was so appealing was Las Vegas: a different setting than the usual New York or Los Angeles procedurals. Over the years, the show made excellent use of its Sin City location, and CSI: Vegas has largely done the same. Season 3, Episode 3, "Rat Packed," features a case that's firmly Las Vegas and would have worked perfectly as a classic CSI story, and that gets the season back on track.
At the same time, Marisa Tam's script offers up the final resolution to Josh Folsom's ongoing story arc -- at least technically. Folsom faces a review board to determine his future as a CSI, but the episode makes clear that their ruling is both a period on that sentence and a jumping-off...
