Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar
Maybe it’s too early here to mention Kirti Kulhari’s indomitable brilliance in this grossly mis-reviewed film. But then, considering she has given what is arguably the most outstanding performance by a female protagonist since Tabu in Chandni Bar and has even gone further than Tabu in some sequences, this is as good a time as any to bring up her climactic court scene where she tells the spellbound judge (he wears the same expression that I did) how her life changed one day when she took the wrong turn and ended up watching the ravages caused by the Congress regime at Turkman Gate.
When Kirti speaks of serendipity her character Indu (I will ignore the cheap thrills of ambiguity afforded by her full name) doesn’t know what that words means. It is that innocence...

Reacting strongly to reports in the press that the release of Madhur Bhandarkar's new film Calendar Girls is delayed from August to September, as the director is getting ready for a long battle with the Censor Board over its content, Censor Chief Pahlaj Nihalani says, "I've heard other reasons for why Madhur's film is being postponed. It's definitely not because of Censor problems. At least, there's no problem from our end." Elaborating on the cuts ordered in Calendar Girls, Pahlajji says, "There were absolutely No visual cuts. We cut some cusswords and words referring to women as 'bitches' etc. In no way do these cuts hamper the flow of the film. Rahi baat Adults certificate ki. Why should Madhur be bothered if we certified the film for an adult audience. Has he made Calendar Girls for children? Is this a Walt Disney entertainer? It's about girls in bikinis posing for calendar.

Can a revealing costume of a 'Calendar Girl' emerging from the sea be considered as a 'shocking nude'? Well, for some 'sources' out there, it did appear to be the case, who were left wondering if filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar had crossed a certain line with the manner in which the promo of his upcoming offering Calendar Girls was cut. However, this time around the only difference is that Bhandarkar, who doesn't mind courting controversy with practically every film of his since Chandni Bar, has been left amused himself. "Nude shot? But where is it? Even he would like to see if there is any in Calendar Girls because as far as he knows, he hasn't directed any such scene for the film, least of it including it in the promo and then sending it out to the Censors no less. Really, some imagination this is," wonders a source close to the filmmaker,...

From giving a sneak peek into the glamour world with Page 3, Fashion and Heroine to revealing the dark world behind poverty and its nexus with crime in films like Chandni Bar and Traffic Signal, Madhur Bhandarkar normally likes to portray the truth amidst superficial societies and shallow relationships. Madhur Bhandarkar is known for making films that offer up observational critiques of a particular industry, be it big business in Corporate, the fashion world in Fashion or his latest offering Heroine which tackles the dark underbelly of fame in Bollywood.
Speaking about the film recently to a leading daily newspaper, Bhandarkar explains that he approaches the film as though he is a reporter – attempting to present the facts rather than offering up solutions to the problems he brings up.
“If a subject intrigues me, I will go down to the very root of the matter. Some of my films do spread awareness. But I can’t give my film a reel (rather than real) ending just to provide solutions. I’ve always kept my films as real as possible, and that’s why I’ve created a niche for myself.”

After his incredible run of women-centric films from Chandni Bar, Page 3, Satta and Corporate to the blockbuster Fashion, Madhur Bhandarkar now turns his lens inwards and presents his most ambitious work yet – Heroine. For a country obsessed with films and film stars, Heroine will take audiences on a voyeuristic journey to see what really goes on behind the closed doors of make up rooms and vanity vans. It will give them a chance to go beyond the gorgeous smiles and politically correct quotes, to see what really happens in the lives of India’s sweethearts. The bitching and the politics, the secrets and the lies,...
