Producer Jerry Bruckheimer continues to tease another Pirates project, with the latest update confirming that a reboot featuring a young, new cast is definitely happening.
It’s been the best part of four years since we first heard that Disney had plans to make two very different Pirates Of The Caribbean movies to continue the popular swashbuckling series that already boasts six films. The plans back in 2020 were to develop a female-led version which would be headlined by Margot Robbie alongside another film with an all-new cast. The latter version was based on a script penned by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, the writer behind the original Pirates films.
Then in 2022, reports surfaced to suggest that the Margot Robbie-led version had been abandoned with Robbie herself stating that Disney ‘didn’t want to do it.’ However, series producer Jerry Bruckheimer popped up not long afterwards to suggest that...

This week, Fubo CEO David Gandler renewed his steady stream of vitriol against the joint venture streaming service from Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery.
Fubo CEO David Gandler wants to ensure that there is no room for interpretation of his feelings about the joint venture sports streaming service from Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery. As if his company’s antitrust lawsuit against the three companies over their forthcoming sports-focused streaming joint venture wouldn’t be enough of an indicator, the long-time streaming executive has been taking every opportunity to go on the offensive against what he believes are anticompetitive practices by some of the media’s heaviest hitters. From calling the new Jv a “cartel” to accusing Disney, Fox, and Wbd from overcharging Fubo by 30% to 50%, as is his wont, Gandler is leaving no punches pulled.

A Pirates of the Caribbean reboot is confirmed, offering a new story with new actors. Craig Mazin's unique approach to the reboot project, stalled by strikes, could potentially bring a fresh and "weird" perspective to the series. Despite the reboot, there is still a possibility for Johnny Depp to return as Jack Sparrow and for the Margot Robbie-led movie to happen in the future.
The next installment in the hugely popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will be a reboot, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Bruckheimer, who has been behind the likes of the Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun, Bad Boys, Pirates of the Caribbean, and National Treasure franchises, revealed that the next Pirates movie will be a new story with new actors (as well as offering an update on the next Top Gun movie).

The Acolyte is a new Star Wars TV show that replaces Knights of the Old Republic, in a spy story focused on the Jedi and Sith infiltration. Set closer to the prequel trilogy, The Acolyte showcases Sith power under the Rule of Two in a familiar, yet fresh galaxy context. This series introduces viewers to the High Republic Era, aiming to match Kotor's legendary status in the Star Wars lore.
Star Wars' next TV show, The Acolyte, is essentially Disney's replacement for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It's hard to believe Kotor is more than 20 years old. Although the style and aesthetic were familiar, Kotor was very different to the other Star Wars movies and shows; it took place at a time when Jedi and Sith were numerous. This was an age when armies of Jedi clashed with hordes of Sith, the light and dark sides of the Force opposing one another explosively.

It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.

Disney released a presentation earlier this week that gave a rare look into how fruitful the biggest IPs are for the House of Mouse. The filing reveals that its tentpole franchises, Marvel and Star Wars, have garnered $11.6 billion Usd and $13.2 billion Usd respectively since they were each acquired for $4 billion Usd in 2009 and 2012, good for a 3.3 times and 2.9 times return on investment.

The Walt Disney Company is giving its investors a sense of the massive profits it has made off of the Star Wars and Marvel universes since that studio and Lucasfilm became part of Disney — and it’s more than one can shake a lightsaber at.
In a presentation posted to the shareholder campaign website Vote Disney, the House of Mouse included highlights of its success with franchises as the company is waging a proxy fight with activist investor Nelson Peltz.
Corporate intrigue aside, the presentation reveals some compelling numbers on the high-profile acquisitions Disney has made over the past 15 years. In a section titled “Enduring franchises highlight our powerful IP and unique monetization capabilities,” Disney indicates that it has seen a 2.9 times and 3.3 times return on investment after purchasing Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios in 2012 and 2009, respectively.
In 2012, Disney paid $4 billion for Lucasfilm, giving Disney ownership of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises.

The Simpsons has a history of mocking Disney, including a subtle nod at the studio's cult-like following in season 9's "The Joy of Sect." The show's satire of Disney continued with episodes parodying Mary Poppins, the company's litigious side, and even featuring an evil corporation mascot resembling Mickey Mouse. Despite Disney's acquisition of Fox, The Simpsons still references the company, but recent jokes focus more on its success rather than controversial aspects.
Although The Simpsons was not always subtle in its mockery of Disney, the long-running show hid one particularly cold diss in a Golden Age outing. The Simpsons makes fun of everyone and everything, so it isn't surprising that the series has aimed some satirical jabs at Disney over the decades. The Super Mario Bros Movie sequel's April 2026 release date poses a challenge for Disney's ambitious 2026 lineup. Disney, with recent box office failures, faces competition from The Super Mario Bros Movie 2's anticipated success. Despite Disney's star-studded 2026 lineup with franchises like Frozen and Toy Story, Mario's sequel may outshine them all.
The Super Mario Bros Movie sequel is confirmed with an approximate release date, and it's bad news for Disney's plans at redemption. The video game-based movie dominated the box office in 2023, so it's no surprise that Illumination and Nintendo are investing in a continued story. In contrast, the House of Mouse had one of its worst years yet, with several of its most hopeful releases bombings at the box office. Based on Disney's lineup for 2026, the company hopes this will be the year that things turn around, but the Mario sequel might make this more difficult.

Deadpool & Wolverine broke the internet with its first teaser, ushering in a new era of hype in the MCU, one that has not been seen since Avengers: Endgame. The first feature-length mutant project in the MCU, the film has a lot riding on it and also has a lot of speculation about what it is going to be.
A still from the trailer of Deadpool and Wolverine
One of the main attractions of the film is that it will introduce mutants in a major capacity in the MCU. While X-Men heavy hitters Quicksilver and Wanda Maximoff made their appearances way back in Avengers: Age of Ultron, they were referred to as ‘enhanced’ and not mutants. A new theory has emerged that Wade, through his shenanigans will retcon the origins of the Maximoff twins and make them full-fledged mutants in the MCU as well.

Well, everyone, the winners for the 22nd Annual Golden Schmoes for the year 2023 are in. As expected, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer walked away the big winner, earning nine Schmoes. It took home most of the big prizes, including Best Movie, Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Screenplay, Poster, Trailer, Line of the Year and Best Sequence. While an excellent showing that beat the seven wins Everything Everywhere All At Once took home last year, it still falls short of our all-time winner here at the Schmoes, Nolan’s own The Dark Knight, which won an amazing 12 awards.
Otherwise, the winners were an eclectic mix. Godzilla Minus One, which is now widely considered the greatest Kaiju movie ever made, took home three awards, including Best VFX, which is impressive considering how small its budget was compared to the competition. Third place was an interesting tie, with John Wick: Chapter 4, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,...

Max will start cracking down on password sharing later this year. The move follows password-sharing crackdown measures by Netflix and Disney+, the former of which experienced a subscriber boost. Max's password-sharing crackdown comes as Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav attempts to increase the service's profitability.
A new report reveals that Max will be the next streamer to crack down on password sharing. First launched in 2020, Warner Bros.' streaming service has steadily become more popular over the last few years, with users turning to the platform to watch HBO series both new and old, as well as a library of other movies and TV shows. Rebranded to just Max in 2023 following the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger in 2022, the service had previously been unaffected by the password-sharing crackdown measures instituted by both Netfilx and Disney+.
According to Lucas Shaw's Bloomberg newsletter, Max will start cracking down on password sharing later this year.

Moana 2 was initially planned as a Disney+ series but has been changed to a theatrical release last minute, a risky move for Disney. Despite the success of the original Moana, the last-minute shift in format from TV to movie presents financial and creative challenges. The decision to turn Moana 2 into a movie was influenced by the success of the original film on Disney+, signaling high expectations for the sequel.
Disney has put Moana 2 through some sizeable changes leading up to its 2024 release, a significant risk that will hopefully pay off. There's no question that the first Moana movie (2016) was a massive success, so it's no surprise that the hero of Motunui's story is being continued. However, it seems that the House of Mouse has been a little indecisive about how it would go about this, which makes the future of Moana 2 a little concerning.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is indeed one of Disney’s most famous and successful franchises to date. However, had it not been for Johnny Depp leading the saga as the fan-favorite notorious pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, perhaps it wouldn’t have reached these magnificent heights of fame. While Depp made it clear he wouldn’t return to the franchise no matter what, it occurred to fans at one point in time that Disney actually regretted its decisions and wanted him back. Walt Disney Animation's 2016 film may be approaching its eight-year anniversary, but the story of Disney's popular Polynesian princess - and its pop culture proliferation - has only just begun.
Along with news of Moana crossing 1 billion streams on Disney+ and being the most streamed movie on any platform in 2023, the House of Mouse confirmed three "shiny" new Moana projects are set to release within the next year and a half.

As the latest project by Disney, Wish has garnered a fair amount of criticism. This has unfortunately become par for the course for many recent projects from the House of Mouse. The film itself follows a young girl in a kingdom ruled over by an evil king, who has the power to grant wishes but only does so on a selective basis. With a fallen star and an assortment of creatures at her side, Asha embarks on a journey to discover the truth behind wishes.
As the latest victim of the online culture wars, many of the criticisms of the film can be easily dismissed due to their ridiculous or prejudice nature. Yet, buried beneath all of that, there does exist plenty of valid criticism. The difficulty is that many of the valid criticisms have been drowned out by the online outrage from people who largely haven't seen the movie.

Spring is now only a few weeks away, and this March at Disney+, a red rose is growing up out of ice frozen ground!
Probably the biggest title on the House of Mouse streamer’s calendar this month is the exclusive streaming premiere of “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version),” the ground-breaking and record-setting concert film tracking Swift’s Eras Tour. The new “(Taylor’s Version)” edit will feature the concert film in its entirety for the first time, plus the song “cardigan” and four additional acoustic songs.
Also premiering this month, “X-Men: The Animated Series” gets a long overdue revival with the new animated series “X-Men '97,” featuring the returns of original cast members Ray Chase, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, and more. Plus, the British historical adventure “Renegade Nell” finally gets its series premiere at the end of the month.

Any business, no matter how big, sails or sinks by the grace of its customers. Be it Disney or Starbucks, regardless of the product that is produced, the company’s priority needs to be to cater to the audiences that have supported them throughout. According to podcaster Patrick Bet-David, this is where Disney messed up, leading to the financial mess that has been the last few years for the House of Mouse.
Disney CEO Bob Iger
Elon Musk has come out to agree with Bet-David’s assessment, detailing what Disney forgot to do. The one thing that drives businesses is that it cater to the audience that has supported it throughout its lifetime: parents. The assessment came as a tweet, linking a sit down that the podcaster had with Gina Carano, discussing her ordeal with Disney that led to her being removed from The Mandalorian.

We’re almost into March of 2024, and Disney has been taking a long, hard look at itself after the disastrous 2023. When two of the most seemingly slam-dunk, profitable IPs are under your umbrella, business should be good, but alas, both Star Wars and Marvel have been plummeting in profits and reception for the House of Mouse. Bob Iger has been adamant about pulling back on the output of the franchise projects so as to not oversaturate the market. Additionally, the streaming service, Disney+, has seen a significant dip in subscribers after they lost 1.3 million accounts once they raised the prices. They have reportedly taken $300 million in streaming losses.

Despite being on network television, Seth MacFarlane's irreverent animated sitcom "Family Guy" can get away with a lot of edgy humor. With over 20 seasons under its belt, the show's reputation precedes it, and audiences are well-aware that the series is actively trying to push buttons through provocative satire and parody. However, during the show's original three-season run, before it got canceled and eventually resurrected thanks to a second wind from DVD sales, "Family Guy" didn't have the same power. That's why Fox initially refused to air one particular episode.
"When You Wish Upon a Weinstein" now sits firmly as part of the third season of "Family Guy," but it became an infamous installment after Fox axed the episode before it even aired. The episode in question finds dimwitted patriarch Peter Griffin (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) scammed by a man selling volcano insurance, something wholly unnecessary in Quahog, Rhode Island.

Fans of The Spiderwick Chronicles can rejoice as the TV adaptation will finally be aired on Roku, after being canceled by Disney+. The exclusive rights deal with Roku makes The Spiderwick Chronicles their "most ambitious series to date." The show is based on the popular book series and follows the Grace family as they uncover mysteries in their ancestral home, with Christian Slater and Joy Bryant leading the cast.
The Roku Channel has released the first trailer for the new TV adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles. Having originally been set to be released on Disney+, the Christian Slater-starring show looked like it was about to become another completed series that would never make it to screens when Disney decided to cancel it. Sony and Disney will come together after a major deal has been struck between the two titans.
Per Variety, Disney will soon be outsourcing the distribution of its home entertainment media to Sony Pictures Entertainment. The new deal will see Sony manufacture, distribute, and market DVDs, Blu-rays, and other physical media of Disney-owned releases. Sony will only be selling all of Disney's new releases and catalog titles on physical media through various retailers in the United States and Canada, while Disney will continue to manage the digital versions of its media. There is speculation in the report that the switch could lead to layoffs at Disney, but it's noted that the House of Mouse is "expected to conduct an internal assessment across all business functions that support physical entertainment amid the transition to Sony."

We just learned so much about Disney’s classic movie Frozen!
Believe it or not, the original blockbuster premiered in theaters 10 years ago. In honor of the special anniversary, Vanity Fair got stars including Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff together to look back on the start of the successful franchise.
In the process, we learned a lot about how the final movie we know and love differed from the original plot. It featured different actresses reading for Elsa and Anna (the characters played by Idina and Kristen) and a very different plot.
We also learned that Frozen was not the first Disney movie either Idina or Kristen auditioned for. Interestingly, they were both in the running for the same part in another hit from the House of Mouse.

Disney is trying to replicate its 2019 success with the 2026 lineup but faces challenges due to market saturation and changing audience preferences. The 2026 movie slate includes familiar franchises like Avengers and Star Wars, aiming to recapture past box office success from 2019. Despite a promising lineup, there are doubts about whether Disney's 2026 plans will achieve the same level of box office success as in the past.
After years of low performances at the box office, Disney seems to be trying to recapture its 2019 success with its 2026 lineup, but it's unlikely to work as well this time around. The House of Mouse is no stranger to blockbusters, but since 2020, the company has had difficulty finding them again. 2023 was an especially rough year for Disney, with several projects failing to impress at the box office or with critics. Disney Animation Studios is regarded as the top animation studio with a satisfying catalog of movies. Some of Disney's early releases were weak and dated, but still had a fun and entertaining quality. The studio experienced box office failures, but rebounded with successful movies that paved the way for the Disney Renaissance.

Deadpool's ability to make explicit jokes about Disney is part of the fun of him being a part of the company. The trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine showcases the character's raunchiness and fourth-wall-breaking humor, proving that Disney is embracing rated R content. While She-Hulk also included meta commentary, Deadpool & Wolverine has the opportunity to go further with self-aware satire without sacrificing the film's story.
The first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine featured a hilarious Disney joke, but this isn't the first time the MCU bit the hand that feeds it. When it was announced Deadpool would be joining the MCU, many were concerned that Disney would prevent the character from being his raunchy, fourth-wall-breaking, immature self. However, the trailer evaporated those concerns within the first few seconds of the trailer, with Wade Wilson breaking the fourth wall and making a joke directed at Disney.

Streaming services have spent the last year making unpopular decisions, including cracking down on passwords and introducing ad-supported tiers to their programming. Hulu recently sent out notices to all their subscribers that they would start implementing account restrictions that prevent anyone with a password from signing into an account if they do not reside in the same household. The decision originated with Netflix and, although the move seemed controversial with consumers, the streaming giant saw a massive uptick in subscriptions.
Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and Disney+ have taken to raising their prices along with offering additional tiers that limit picture quality and feature advertisements. Unfortunately for Disney+, this would result in a major subscription hit. According to Variety, “Disney+ Core subscribers dropped to 111.3 million from the 112.6 million reported in the previous quarter, according to Disney’s quarterly earnings results released Wednesday.”

The Deadpool & Wolverine trailer proves that Disney is not censoring the Merc with a Mouth in the MCU, signaling a willingness to take risks. Recent MCU projects, like Echo and the upcoming Blade movie, show a trend of pushing boundaries with more explicit violence. Deadpool & Wolverine including foul language and sexual humor indicates that Disney may become more lenient in that aspect overall with projects for which it makes sense.
Any lingering concerns over how R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine have been addressed in the movie's first official trailer. Disney's success depends on the continued relevance of its existing characters, leading to a heavy focus on remakes and sequels. Remakes and sequels ensure that beloved characters like Mickey Mouse and Ariel remain popular and recognizable. While new ideas are important, Disney has found more success with remakes and sequels due to audience familiarity and the financial benefits they bring.
Disney has been heavily criticized for its recent dependence on remakes and sequels of its older stories, but for better or worse, these will be key to the company's legacy. The House of Mouse has announced another batch of movies for the coming year, most of which are sequels that will continue the stories of existing characters. This has been an ongoing trend for the past decade or so, with more remakes or add-ons to existing IP than brand-new stories and fresh ideas. However, considering Disney's existing business model, this should come as no surprise.

Over the course of the last 20 years, The Walt Disney Company has made multiple major acquisitions, making the proverbial House of Mouse home to some of the biggest franchises and IPs on the planet. Of course, fans already know about Marvel, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones, but what about some of the other franchises that Disney has acquired? Considering Disney’s entertainment acquisitions of 21st Century Fox which began in 2019, Disney now owns all the popular film and television franchises that were once part of the Fox Corporation. It’s time to take a look at all the notable franchises that Disney now owns besides all the popularly recognized Disney IP that falls under the Disney banner.

2023 marked 100 years of the Walt Disney Animation Studios, celebrating a full century of groundbreaking and beloved generational classics that revolutionized the landscape of animated cinema, forever. To honor the institution's legacy, Disney put out "Wish," the company's first original fairy tale that was unfortunately met with less-than-stellar reviews, and the charming short film "Once Upon a Studio," which although well received, failed to earn a nomination at the Academy Awards for Best Animated Short. In fact, "Wish" was also shut out of the Best Animated Feature race, indicating that the House of Mouse is no longer the untouchable empire it once was and that resting on their legendary laurels isn't going to cut it anymore. It certainly must be a pretty tough pill for those working at Disney to swallow, especially those who are fighting tooth-and-nail to bring the company through its evolutionary next step.

There's more troubling news for Marvel as it sounds like their anti-hero ensemble Thunderbolts appears to have been taken off Disney's theatrical slate for 2025 after Disney chief Bob Iger revealed the films the House of Mouse is sending to theaters next year. Iger was speaking at an earnings call, and announced that a number of films would be released in those 12 months — Captain America: Brave New World, Fantastic Four, Elio, Zootopia 2, and Avatar 3 — with no room for Thunderbolts, which had been slated originally for a summer 2025 release.

Family Guy, an iconic animated comedy, is moving its premiere from Sundays to Wednesdays after 18 years on the Sunday night block. This scheduling change raises concerns about the future of the show and whether it will face cancelation after 25 years. Although Family Guy's ratings have declined, and it may be past its prime, there is still uncertainty about its future as it is renewed for the 2024-25 season, and creator Seth MacFarlane is in demand elsewhere.
When one thinks of this century's iconic animated programs, Family Guy is typically one of the first that comes to mind. It's been a staple of Fox's Sunday night animation lineup for nearly two decades, though that will soon come to an end.

Disney Boss Bob Iger announced today that Moana 2 is coming out as a feature — this November. Iger exclaimed the news in a CNBC interview before the studio’s Q1 earnings on how the studio was turning a Moana TV series into a feature sequel. This despite the fact that a live-action version with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role of Maui from the original 2016 film is also planned for a theatrical release on June 27, 2025.
Note, Disney books the Thanksgiving five-day Wednesday-Sunday stretch with an animated movie annually. It always had a November 27 release date set for a toon feature.
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” said Iger, “and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”

It’s difficult to think of a director as young as Barry Jenkins who seems so clearly destined to be remembered as one of the greats. After dropping his moving, romantic debut feature “Medicine for the Melancholy” in 2008, Jenkins further honed his craft and became a household name (at least among any cinephiles worth their salt) with the release of his sophomore feature “Moonlight.” The tender, beautiful film was the subject of rapturous acclaim, and its groundbreaking and dramatic Best Picture win at the Oscars cemented it as an all-time great work of art.
Since then, Jenkins has only gone from strength to strength. His 2018 follow-up “If Beale Street Could Talk” was a similar critical darling. And his epic limited series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad,” which sadly went under the radar for much of the general public in 2021, was nothing short of stunning.
