At eye level with a three-year-old
This charming movie confirms Astrid Henning-Jensen's position as the leading director of children of her day, as already established in many features and shorts. Three-year-old Jacob is an active, investigative boy - always looking for opportunities to experience the tactile feel of things, to learn from imitating his parents, generally to seek any thrilling of his senses within reach. It's all carried out in his playing, sometimes with rather drastic or dangerous consequences. So his progressive parents are worried, and they try to explain things to him in rational terms - a psychologist and a medical doctor is also called for. None of them seem to understand the underlying logic in Jacob's actions. Only Astrid Henning-Jensen does. And mediated by her empathy and understanding, so does the viewer.
