The Crow remake's tumultuous 15-year journey saw multiple directors, actors, and script changes before finally landing on Bill Skarsgård in the lead role. Original director Alex Proyas does not support the reboot, echoing the sentiment of fans who hold the late Brandon Lee's legacy in high regard. With Rupert Sanders at the helm and a new cast including FKA Twigs, this modern reimagining of The Crow aims to honor the original while captivating a contemporary audience.
The 2024 remake of The Crow has been a long time in the making, with a timeline stretching across 15 years of development hell. The remake first began development back in December 2008. But it only circled through a seemingly endless flock of directors, writers, and actors, until finally landing on the team that has resurrected The Crow reboot with Bill Skarsgård in the lead role. Rorschach is considered by some to be Alan Moore's best piece of writing, despite his disdain for people who identify with the character. Alan Moore respects Mr. Hyde from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, finding his honesty about his nature honorable. Moore sees Rorschach as a representation of a realistic take on Batman, while he sees Mr. Hyde as a monster who understands his situation and has a clearer grasp of reality.
Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen is revered throughout the comic book industry and beyond, thanks to its character study of figures like Rorschach. Moore famously holds disdain for people who identify with Watchmen, but there is a far more heinous villain the author respects.
Much to Alan Moore's consternation, Rorschach garnered a reputation as the writer's best piece of writing. Written as a morally absolute, violent vigilante, the antihero is a character designed to represent a realistic take on Batman.

You have to be careful with verbosely-named action teams, cinematically-speaking. You’re looking for that mismatched bunch of violent oddbods, but are you after The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Or the spooky kids of Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children? Or could it even be, um, The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society? If you’re Guy Ritchie, the answer you’re looking for is The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare – that’s the name of his next film, the latest from the ludicrously busy British filmmaker, who also has The Gentlemen spin-off series (unrelated to Gentlemanly Warfare) readying to launch on Netflix soon. This one’s a wartime romp based on a historical World War 2 mission – with Henry Cavill letting loose as an agent whose unconventional methods might just reap results. Watch the trailer:
Looks fun, right? While Cavill is seen in cinemas this week in Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle,...

Sean Connery's career included a wide variety of roles across different genres, showcasing his strong range as an actor. Connery's most famous role was as MI6 agent James Bond, but he also had standout performances in other films like The Untouchables and The Hunt for Red October. While Connery's final film, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, was a disappointment, his career was filled with remarkable roles that deserve celebration as he is a true legend of cinema.
The career of legendary Scottish actor Sean Connery was one forever associated with his most famous role, however, it also included many other interesting parts across a wide variety of genres and styles. Connery worked with many acclaimed directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Brian De Palma, and Sidney Lumet, and demonstrated a strong range for which he often does not receive enough credit. In the new action thriller The Dirty South, which opens in theaters and is available on demand November 10, Shane West plays Dion, a handsome drifter who becomes a bright hope for the character of Sue Parker (Willa Holland of Arrow). Sue is in the thick of it, desperately trying to save her family’s struggling bar, which is suddenly on the brink of collapse due to her father’s neglect.
The engaging premise makes for a great drama in writer/director Matthew Yerby's film. Sue sees Dion as her only chance to lose the bar to a gritty tycoon (Dermot Mulroney in fine form). What begins as a simple plan to keep her family intact, quickly spirals into one big mess — larceny, lawlessness, and deadly consequences. If you appreciate intense dramas filled with tension and engaging characters, put The Dirty South into your queue. Shane West opened up more...

Albert Hughes reveals the struggles faced during the production of the live-action Akira movie, including the studio's fear and hesitation to make the film. When Warner Brothers offered him any project after the success of The Book of Eli, Hughes chose Akira, but felt that the studio wasn't truly ready to make it. Hughes emphasized the importance of staying true to the original source material and believed that the IP of Akira was more significant than any individual actor.
Albert Hughes has spoken about the live-action Akira movie's production struggles. The original 1988 Akira, based on the manga of the same name, follows the biker Kaneda trying to rescue his friend Tetsuo from being experimented on by the government in Tokyo several decades after a nuclear bomb was dropped on the city by the Japanese government. Hollywood has often turned to the fantasy genre to tell some of the greatest stories ever put to film. From epic, high fantasy to grounded adventure in unique worlds, the genre has racked up an impressive number of awards, solid prestige and a dedicated fan base. Often turning to novels and mythology, the fantasy genre is the highest, purest form of escapism there is, telling stories detached from the real world and populated with magic, elves, monsters and more.
Fantasy movies such as Lord of the Rings have entrenched their status as genuine classics and masterpieces not in need of a remake or reboot. However, there are certainly examples of fantasy films that deserve another look, whether due to a poor execution, stories left unfinished or unrealized full potential. The fantasy genre is full of films that would make for excellent new franchises, and they're just waiting for studios and...

Known as the most critically acclaimed, cerebral writer in the history of comics, Alan Moore is not content to rest on his laurels, entering the prose arena in earnest with new short story collection Illuminations, and the gigantic tome Jerusalem - an epic exploration of his hometown of Northampton, England. Illuminations made headlines, particularly for its mockumentary-style story, 'What We Can Know About Thunderman' - a vivid takedown of the comic industry. However, Moore's criticisms go far beyond the realm of superheroes. Indeed, they appear to span the whole breadth of contemporary fiction.
In this wide-ranging conversation with Screen Rant, the Watchmen and V for Vendetta creator talks about the rise of superhero culture, his many colorful characters from works such as From Hell, Jerusalem, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Voice of the Fire, and what he sees as a decline in popular storytelling.

DC movies based on comic book properties are sometimes better suited for TV series due to their episodic nature and long-form storytelling structure. TV adaptations can fix problems of overstuffing, poor pacing, and lack of character development found in some DC movies. DC movies like Watchmen, Justice League, Suicide Squad, Jonah Hex, Green Lantern, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen could have benefited from being conceived as TV series to explore their narratives more effectively.
DC properties have a long history on the big screen, and while several have become iconic parts of the superhero genre, others feel like they may have found more success as TV series. While comic book properties have dominated cinemas for the last decade and a half, the genre's characters almost all got their start in short, episodic stories. By their nature, comic books are usually structured more like long-form TV shows than movies, making...

Alan Moore says he’s pivoted his approach to sharing royalties, now opting to have DC Comics send them to Black Lives Matter.
In a new interview with The Telegraph published Wednesday, the comics legend behind Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Batman: The Killing Joke, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and more spoke about his journey into literary publishing following the release of his short story collection, Illuminations.
During the lengthy chat, Moore opened up about how his perspective on the state of comics has changed how he shares his royalties, in addition to talking about his thoughts on Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight and why he’s increasingly opted out of public appearances.
While speaking to his own works like Watchman and V for Vendetta, both of which have been adapted for the screen, the artist — who has long refused to have his name attached to screen adaptations of...

Sean Connery was the actor everyone knew for starting the James Bond franchise. He quickly reached stardom, and directors considered him for other major works. Over the course of his career, Connery accumulated dozens of credits. One of the last movies he did was bad enough to make him want to retire.

Connery got into film and television when a casting director happened to watch him in a bodybuilding competition. He appeared in multiple movies and TV shows, but his big break would come in the 60s. The James Bond series has been popular for decades, and Connery starred in the first five flicks.

Few comic book writers have received as much praise as Alan Moore, and even fewer have enjoyed such a contentious relationship with the entire industry. His work on such graphic novels as Watchmen, V for Vendetta, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Batman: The Killing Joke has seen Moore being listed as the greatest writer in comics, but despite his abundance of praise for the medium itself, his relationship with the companies controlling said medium has become extraordinarily bitter. In 2022, after years of speculation, Moore confirmed that he was retired from comics, stating that while he would “always love and adore the comics medium… the comics industry and all of the stuff attached to it just became unbearable.” Given how much he has championed the comic book as a serious method of storytelling, it makes you wonder just what on earth happened to elicit this severe reaction. Well, there are a lot of explanations,...

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was released in 2003, and working on the notorious movie is what finally convinced James Bond actor Sean Connery to retire. League was panned by critics, audiences, and, predictably, creator Alan Moore, whose disapproval of screen adaptations of his work is legendary. Actor Sean Connery also weighed in on the film's failures, hinting that it contributed to his decision to call time on his career after over 50 years in the business.
Connery officially announced his retirement in 2006, when he received a lifetime achievement award at the American Film Institute. In 2007, Sean Connery revealed (via BBC News) that he was almost enticed out of retirement by Steven Spielberg for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. However, he decided that "retirement was too much fun". Connery would make one final movie before his death in 2020, in a voice role as Sir Billi in the 2012 animated movie of the same name.

Few movie stars ever reach the global icon status that Sean Connery enjoyed. In his youth he was the face of arguably the first modern film franchise, James Bond. The experience took him around the globe and laid the groundwork for a career where even into his 60s, no less than Steven Spielberg would say Connery remained one of “only seven genuine movie stars in the world today.” His roles are the stuff of legend: Bond, Jimmy Malone, Professor Henry Jones, Major General Urquhart, Robin Hood, and many more.

Horror-thriller is a confusing mashup of science, religion and spiritualism, cursed with a sloppy script and bad acting
This horror-thriller occupies the same Victorian shadowlands as The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Penny Dreadful; a not-quite-modern epoch, with its zesty mashup of science, religion and spiritualism, retrofuturist tech and plain retro beliefs. It makes an invigorating backdrop for Irish director Stephen Hall’s second feature. But his script isn’t quite sharp enough and – apart from John Rhys-Davies, who goes at his role with his customary fiery traction, and villain Richard Brake, as ever exploiting a face like an open grave – too many of the supporting cast fall into the distinctly ordinary bracket, acting-wise.
We open with the bobbies bursting in on London’s most-wanted serial killer: William Colcott (Brake), about to dispatch another victim in a long string he is apparently offering up in an occult attempt to resurrect his dead wife.

Despite being lambasted by critics and disowned by original comic creator Alan Moore, VFX artists have praised the use of practical effects in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Loosely based on Moore’s comic series of the same name, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen followed a group of famous 19th-century literary characters reimagined as a team of Victorian-era superheroes. Featuring a cast led by Sean Connery as the adventurer Allan Quartermain, the veteran actor would later go on to claim the film’s troubled production and final quality is what convinced him to retire from acting altogether.

Taika Waititi’s live-action Akira movie has reportedly gotten a surprise update after years of languishing in the development pipeline. Set to be based on Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1982 manga series and the subsequent 1988 anime film of the same name, Waititi was first attached to the project as far back as 2017, following his time on Thor: Ragnarok for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Initially intended to be released in May 2021, the project was pushed back to allow Waititi time to work on the MCU sequel Thor: Love and Thunder, and was later removed from the Warner Bros. release schedule altogether.
Now, a surprising update from senior Deadline reporter Justin Kroll suggests Waititi has never left the project, and a script is reportedly due into the studio shortly.

Jacqueline West is one of Hollywood’s most respected costume designers with four Oscar nominations for Philip Kaufmann’s Quills, David Fincher’s The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part One.
She is also Terrence Malick’s go-to costume designer, after a recommendation from his long-time production designer Jack Fisk, working with him on The New World, The Tree of Life, To the Wonder and Knight of Cups, while other credits include Stephen Norrington’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Ben Affleck’s Argo and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers Of The Flower Moon.
Talking about her career in a masterclass for the Doha Film Institute, West said she fell into cinema by chance after connecting with Kaufmann through a clothes store she set up in Berkeley in the 1990s after majoring in art history, having originally planned to study sciences.

However, with James Gunn and Peter Safran moving towards a complete Dcu reboot, the decade-long legacy of Snyder with DC will be erased.
However, Zack Snyder effectively left the so-called "SnyderVerse" behind in 2017 after the tragic suicide of his daughter Autumn. He only briefly returned in 2021 to release Zack Snyder's Justice League as fan service for those upset with Joss Whedon's cut of the film. Despite campaigns from fans to get the SnyderVerse back on track, Synder has since put those days behind him.

Following its anime debut in the 1980s, Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira has been one of the most iconic stories in Japanese media, and there have been many attempts to produce a live-action movie version. The original manga, also created by Otomo, was a success that won a Harvey Award in 1993 and four Eisner Awards, two in 2002 and two in 2018. The anime was lauded for its story and amazing, if sometimes grotesque, animation. Its success played a big part in anime finding a home in the United States as a medium to tell adult stories.
With Akira's success, naturally, there were attempts at adapting it in other forms. Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo, for example, stated in 2019 that he was working with the anime studio Sunrise to create a new Akira anime based on the manga, which would undoubtedly have included content cut from the original movie. More notable, however, is...

If January sets the tone for any streamer’s year then 2023 is certainly going to be the Year of True Crime on Hulu. That’s right, Hulu’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlight by several new true crime docuseries (and one charmingly goofy animated hero).
The true crime docuseries fest gets started with Death in the Dorms on Jan. 5. That will be followed by How I Caught My Killer on Jan. 12, and Web of Death on Jan. 19. The first is a six-episode series that will follow the real life case of murders at UCLA, while the latter two will both present several different stories.
It’s not just all true crime in January for Hulu. Jan. 9 sees the arrival of Koala Man, an animated series that envisions an Australian crime fighter of the same name. Also premiering is season 2 of How I Met Your Mather (Jan. 24) and superhero drama Extraordinary (Jan.

It’s last call for a number of noteworthy movies leaving HBO Max in December. If you remember “Project Popcorn” – the strategy that saw all 2021 Warner Bros. movies stream on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters – then “Mortal Kombat” and “Those Who Wish Me Dead” will sound familiar. The martial arts reboot and Taylor Sheridan thriller, respectively, will be leaving the streaming service this month.
It’s also final call for Martin Scorsese’s “Bringing Out the Dead,” the extended version of Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” and Edgar Wright’s terrific sci-fi action-comedy “The World’s End” if auteurs are your thing. “Planet Earth” and “Planet Earth II” are also leaving the streaming service soon.

Artist Kevin O'Neill, the British comic book artist whose best work carved new paths in the superhero genre, died this week. O'Neill's best comics chart a course from 1980s British comics to 2000s independent fare, including titles like Marshal Law and 2000 Ad. Fans unfamiliar with his work now have the opportunity to learn about a vital, inventive period in comic history.
He left his indelible mark on several great comic books, including The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which he co-created with writer Alan Moore. He also worked with Moore on Tales of the Green Lantern Corps, which proved monumental not only in Green Lantern lore but in the company's relationship with the Comics Code Authority.

Writer Alan Moore is legendary for fundamentally changing the medium of comics and the myth of the superhero, but fans may be surprised to learn of Moore's introduction to comics as a young boy.
Moore is considered one of the most influential comic writers of our time, known primarily for his works including Watchmen, V for Vendetta, and Batman: The Killing Joke. After his heyday in the '80s and '90's, Moore has since begun to move away from the worlds of superheros and comic books. He frequently voices his dislike for superhero culture including movie and television adaptations, and the works he once created that are lauded by millions of comic readers all over the world will forever haunt him.

While everyone has their favorite James Bond movie, you’ll be hard-pushed to find someone who doesn’t love Sam Mendes’ Skyfall. A decade after the credits rolled on Daniel Craig’s third outing as the martini-swilling spy, it’s time to look back on the movie that could’ve been. Because the rumors are true: Skyfall once planned to pull Sean Connery out of retirement. Yet 10 years later, that twist now looks like it might’ve ruined the franchise forever in retrospect.
In Skyfall, things culminated in a bloody showdown between 007 (Craig) and the villainous Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) at the titular Skyfall estate, Bond’s surprise childhood home. Also along for the ride were M (Judi Dench) and the estate’s jolly gamekeeper, Kincade, with the latter being a tie to James Bond’s childhood. Although Kincade was played by the legendary Albert Finney, the original plan was...

Known for books like Watchmen, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Batman: The Killing Joke, Alan Moore is no slouch when it comes to works of literary importance, but what a lot of people may not know is that the author also considers himself a magician, in a very real sense of the word. And, one of the only reasons he chose magic was because he once got drunk in Northampton.
More than a few times Alan Moore has famously claimed that he is done writing comic books while criticizing superheroes as being infantile— but that wasn't always the case. In fact, in the late 1970s, a young Moore abandoned his office job to start writing and drawing his own comics, mostly for underground publishers and fanzines. It wasn’t long before he got picked up by larger publishers and began writing stories for Doctor Who Weekly, Marvel UK, and others.

Black Adam, the upcoming DC release, boasts an enviable cast led by Dwayne Johnson as the notorious anti-hero and includes former James Bond, Pierce Brosnan, as the Justice Society's Dr. Fate. It's a win for DC to land Brosnan for the role (and heaven knows they could use one), an experienced actor that brings dignity and an action-adventure history into the film... and the character looks amazing to boot. Speaking of, just who is Dr. Fate, anyway? Doctor Fate, in short, is DC's sorcerer supreme, debuting twenty years prior to Marvel's Dr. Strange.

Alan Moore is one of the greatest, genre-defining writers to have ever graced comic books, but he's also one of the medium's most cynical critics. Moore found his start writing for DC Comics in the '80s, quickly climbing the ladder from "Swamp-Thing" and "Miracleman" into writing his very own acclaimed original series and novels. "V for Vendetta," "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," "From Hell," and his 1986 magnum opus "Watchmen" have all been adapted for the screen at some point, much to the chagrin of Moore.
Long before comic book movies became the dominating pop culture monolith they are now, both Hollywood and the comics industry have butchered and exploited Moore's body of work, from creating adaptations that grossly misunderstood the nuances of his stories, to depriving Moore of ownership over his own works to create cash-in sequels and spin-off comics. It's the classic story of an artist being screwed...

As fans await the release of his first short story collection “Illuminations”, Alan Moore has bluntly expressed what they knew was coming but may not have wanted to hear: he’s officially done with comics.
Alan Moore has followed through on his indication that he would retire after volume four of “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, titled “The Tempest”, the final issue of which was released in 2019. In a new interview with The Guardian, he said, “I’m definitely done with comics…I haven’t written one for getting on for five years. I will always love and adore the comics medium but the comics industry and all of the stuff attached to it just became unbearable.”
All that “stuff” seems to be a combination of the political climate, the wave of superhero movies and that comics weren’t maturing but rather its fan base wasn’t. “I thought that...

One of the world’s most admired comic creators has expressed his concern at the crowds queueing up to watch superhero movies in recent years, saying such urges can be “a precursor to fascism,” and pointing out the correlation with Donald Trump’s election.
Alan Moore, who brought the world Watchmen, V for Vendetta and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen among his many titles, told the Guardian of his fears for the future.
He said:
“I said round about 2011 that I thought that it had serious and worrying implications for the future if millions of adults were queueing up to see Batman movies. Because that kind of infantilisation – that urge towards simpler times, simpler realities – that can very often be a precursor to fascism.”
And he pointed out the time of Donald Trump’s election in 2016 coincided with superhero movies moving to the top of the worldwide box office.

"The Crow" may be cursed. The original 1994 film, based on a popular James O'Barr graphic novel, was directed by Alex Proyas and spawned three film sequels and a TV series. A long-awaited remake was first announced way back in 2008, alongside the news Relativity Media was bargaining with producer Ed Pressman over financing and acquiring the property. Stephen Norrington, best known for "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," was initially tapped to write and direct the feature. However, as the process developed, creative differences led to his departure, and a new team was hired.

The “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series at Disney+ is rounding out its cast with five new additions, Variety has learned exclusively.
Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, and Timm Sharp are all set to appear in recurring guest star roles in the small screen adaptation of the popular Rick Riordan book series. They join previously announced series lead Walker Scobell as well as recently announced co-stars Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries. News of the casting comes as the series kicks off production in Vancouver.
Mullally will play Alecto, a.k.a. Mrs. Dodds. Mrs. Dodds is Percy’s strict, irascible math teacher who may act monstrous at times, because she is. She’s one of the three Furies, known as Alecto, who loyally serves Hades, the god of the underworld.

My favorite Ray Liotta performance won't make this list. Technically, it can't.
FX's "The League" is a television show that's as broad as a half-hour situational comedy gets. It's the story of terrible people doing terrible things in the name of their bad fantasy football teams. In one of the show's best episodes, Ruxin (Nick Kroll) gets chummy with his boss, Mr. Hudabega (Ray Liotta), a fastidious germaphobe. Ruxin is sick and, when he tries to hide it during a meeting, Hudabega goes full Liotta. Exclusive: Global sports streaming outfit Dazn is to make around 50 redundancies in its London headquarters, Deadline can reveal.
Staff in the Hammersmith, West London HQ have been told in the past couple of hours, Deadline understands, and a four-week redundancy process has been kickstarted, with around 50 roles set to potentially be closed.
The number represents around 5 of the UK workforce, most of whom work in London, and 2 of the global workforce of just over 2,500.
While London is where Dazn launched, it is understood that the decision is driven by the outfit’s decision to decentralize and focus on other growth regions such as Spain, Italy and Germany.

20th Century Studios is developing a reboot of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for Hulu, Deadline can confirm.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a fantasy pic released by 20th Century Fox in 2003, based on the comic book series of the same name from writer Alan Moore and artist Kevin O’Neill. Set in an alternate Victorian Age world, it followed a group of famous contemporary fantasy, science fiction, and adventure characters—including Captain Nemo, Dorian Gray and Tom Sawyer—as they teamed up on a secret mission.
The League of Extraordinary Gentleman comics were first introduced in 1999. Stephen Norrington directed the original film adaptation, starring Sean Connery, which was reputed to be the reason he retired from acting—so miserable was his experience on set. James Dale Robinson wrote the script, with Naseeruddin Shah, Peta Wilson, Tony Curran, Stuart Townsend, Shane West, Jason Flemyng and Richard Roxburgh rounding out the cast.

A new adaptation of “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” based on the Alan Moore graphic novels, is in the works at 20th Century Studios. The project is in early development at the studio, and intended to land on Hulu.
The film will be written by Justin Haythe, who wrote Jennifer Lawrence spy thriller “Red Sparrow.” Kevin O’Neill drew the series which ended after eight graphic novels in 2020. The hope for the new adaptation is to film the original books.
The new incarnation will be extremely faithful to the original graphic novel, which involves famous public domain characters like Allan Quatermain, Mina Harker from Dracula, The Invisible Man, Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fu Manchu, Captain Nemo and Professor Cavor teaming up to thwart a deadly attack on London from the air in Victorian times.
