When a nine year old girl writes a letter to Santa Claus asking for a mommy, a television station news director gets wind of it and assigns a hard-bitten reporter to get the story. With the help of a male nanny, the reporter learns learns that at Christmas, wishes can still be granted.
Californian widower Joel Wallace, a successful businessman, is a great catch in a grand mansion, but absorbed by his work. His daughter Felice (9) writes to a TV Christmas special, hoping for a 'new mammy'. After failing to bring his girlfriend in as holiday nanny, Joel, agrees to reluctantly let reporter Mary Maloney's team shoot in their home, Felice's wish. He hastily has to hire an agency minder- former variety artist Les Turner, a 'governor' with a magic touch to everyone's taste, not limited to child-minding.
