Scooby-Doo is one of the most recognizable brands in the world. However, if you were a kid-of the 2000s, your first exposure to this band of mystery-solving teenagers was probably the live-action films produced by Warner Brothers and written by James Gunn. Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed celebrated its 20th anniversary this week. This caused Gunn to honor the sequel and reveal the original title of Monsters Unleashed. He also gave fans another hint of what could have been with a third film.

Mystery Mistress.
After kicking off March with discussions of the Kristen Stewart vehicle Personal Shopper (listen) and Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train (listen), we’re getting a little silly with a deep dive into Raja Gosnell‘s live-action cartoon sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) for its 20th anniversary!
In the film, canine sleuth Scooby-Doo (Neil Fanning) once again joins his pals Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), Velma (Linda Cardellini), Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar) when the Evil Masked Figure breaks into the Coolsonian Criminology Museum and steals a bunch of costumes that belonged to Mystery Inc.’s previously unmasked foes! What’s worse? E.M.F. is using them to create real monsters! It’s up to the gang to stop the monsters’ attack on Coolsville, while dodging the libelous attacks of television journalist Heather Jasper-Howe (Alicia Silverstone), who is out to discredit their investigations.

Matthew Lillard has been voicing Shaggy in Scooby-Doo movies and TV series since the first live-action theatrical film in 2002. After replacing original voice actor Casey Kasem, Lillard has lent his voice to Shaggy in every Scooby-Doo animated TV series since 2010, except in the 2023 HBO spinoff Velma. Warner Bros. produced 25 direct-to-video animated Scooby-Doo movies from 2010-2023, all featuring Lillard as Shaggy.
An upcoming installment in the Scooby-Doo franchise will see Matthew Lillard returning as the voice of Shaggy, a role he's been playing in movies and TV shows for the past 22 years. After starring in films like Hackers, Scream, and She's All That, Matthew Lillard took on the role of the snack-loving and easily spooked Shaggy Rogers in the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo film. He later reprised this role in the 2004 sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. Years later, when longtime Shaggy voice actor Casey Kasem announced his retirement due to health problems, Lillard...

Matthew Lillard teases a new Scooby-Doo project that will allow kids to put themselves into a Mystery Inc. adventure, a fun and exciting concept. Despite recent setbacks in the franchise, Lillard's return could draw audiences in for an immersive experience with the beloved characters. The new project will have to navigate the challenges of the streaming age, but hopefully, it will avoid the fate of premature cancellation faced by previous Scooby-Doo releases.
Matthew Lillard gives an exciting update on his return to the Scooby-Doo franchise. As I get older, I find it harder and harder to find horror movies from the 80s and even 90s to qualify for a recommendation towards a best horror movie you never saw. First is the influx of all these great companies like Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, and Severin Films, not to mention Kino and Scream Factory, who pull out all the stops finding the most hidden of hidden gems to clean up and release. Second, we have a ludicrous amount of streaming services, and the free ones typically can find these smaller movies that cost way less to license a streamable version. Between my generation recommending everything under the sun to their coworkers, friends, and family as well as newer generations being willing to stream something if its easy to find, the 80s is well represented, for better and for worse. It follows transfer student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) attempting to fit in at school and trying to help bring down the trio of bullying girls known as the Plastics, led by Queen Bee Regina George (Renée Rapp).
Per Deadline, the Mean Girls release is set to take No.

Freddie Prinze Jr.'s career peaked in the late '90s and early 2000s with high-profile romantic comedies like "She's All That," but his subsequent films flopped at the box office. Prinze Jr. took a break from acting to prioritize his role as a father and has appeared on screen less since 2008. While only dabbling in a film career, Prinze Jr. has remained involved in the entertainment industry through voice acting, WWE, and creating content for his YouTube channel and podcasts.
Freddie Prinze Jr. was a teen heartthrob and winner of multiple Teen Choice Awards, but he has spent much less time in the limelight in recent years. Son of Freddie Prinze Sr., star of the '70s NBC sitcom Chico and the Man, it seemed that acting was in Prinze Jr.'s blood. His breakthrough in I Know What You Did Last Summer set him on a decade-long high in Hollywood.

Scooby-Doo is still one of the most iconic animated franchises in animation history. This classic hit got its start in 1969 thanks to Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, who created Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! for Hanna-Barbera Productions. The show introduced a team of youngsters made up of Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, and Shaggy Rogers, along with their Great Dane dog named Scooby-Doo. The team specialized in solving mysteries involving alleged supernatural creatures, yet they always ended up finding out that, hidden behind the monsters, ordinary people were the real villains of the story.
The enormous impact of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! led to further series, spin-offs, reboots, movies, video games, and comics, among many other media. Among the large number of Scooby-Doo movies, the two live-action films stand above the rest: Scooby-Doo: The Movie and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. Scooby-Doo is undeniably one of the greatest cartoon franchises ever created, with countless films and TV shows being released since its 1969 launch. Crafted from the genius minds of Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the beloved series follows the lovable talking Great Dane and amateur teen sleuths Shaggy, Velma, Daphne, and Fred as they drive around in The Mystery Machine, solving crimes and cases across the country, uncovering countless great Scooby-Doo villains. Initially titled Mysteries Five with a bongo-playing sheepdog and five teenagers solving spooky mysteries, the program changed its lead pooch to a Great Dane, and the rest is history.

Thirteen Ghosts, the 2001 supernatural horror from director Steve Beck, has a star-studded cast of household names taking top billing, but many didn't achieve this status until after the film's release. After inheriting a mansion from his uncle, widow Cyrus Kriticos (F. Murray Abraham) moves into it with his children and their nanny, only to find the house is haunted by ghosts. Thirteen Ghosts (2001) was a remake of the original of the same name, which was originally released in 1960.
At the time of release, the film got mostly negative critiques and was not well received by audiences, but over time became an unappreciated classic to many. In August 2023, it was announced that a television series adaptation inspired by the films was in development, but there has been no confirmation whether it will involve the 2001 film cast or not. However, it's clear from their established careers, they may not need to return to the Thirteen Ghosts universe.

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Scooby-Doo fans have speculated about Fred's sexual orientation, with some believing that he is gay due to certain character traits and emotional struggles shown in the TV shows. There has been no official confirmation of Fred's sexuality, but actors from the live-action movies revealed that an early version of the film hinted at Fred being gay. Velma Dinkley, another character from Scooby-Doo, has also been discussed among fans as potentially being a lesbian, and there was an animated film that openly acknowledged her as such. Fred's sexuality, however, remains a mystery in the franchise.

James Gunn wanted Matthew Lillard to play Plastic Man in a movie 23 years ago, but it never happened. With Gunn now co-ceo of DC Studios, the timing is perfect for Lillard's portrayal of the DC hero. Plastic Man's malleable look and Lillard's charismatic acting make him a great fit for the upcoming DC Universe.
James Gunn failed to get one DC character off the ground 23 years ago, but the time is finally right for his perfect pairing to hit the big screen in the new DC Universe. Despite some undeniable high points over its 10-year run, the DC Extended Universe, which started with 2013's Man of Steel, will come to a close when Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom releases this December. Replacing it will be a new DC Universe canon, complete with a bevy of new characters and a more unified narrative plan for the future.

The Slither episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written and Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
James Gunn has become a huge household name in the superhero world. From 2010’s critically panned, cult favorite film, Super, to making the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best trilogy in Guardians of the Galaxy, to now becoming co-ceo of DC Studios and even has a Superman project up his sleeve.
I bet you’re wondering where James honed his craft to become the director he is today. Well, his tenure with Troma Films is well documented but it really all started with his directorial debut, Slither (watch it Here). It’s a film that pays homage to The Blob and feels like a mix of Dawn of the Dead as well as Ridley Scott’s 1979 Sci-Fi epic,...

James Gunn is a part of the Dcu in a major way, obviously overseeing the next stage of the franchise. However, it seems that he has also become part of the franchise in a more literal sense thanks to a brief appearance of a movie poster for Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed in this summer’s The Flash. Gunn responded to a fan who pointed out that the inclusion of the poster means that the writer-director is now officially exists as canon in the franchise.
The Easter egg was pointed out by a Flash fan site on Twitter, which circled the poster in a screenshot from the movie and noted that “Young Barry has a poster of Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed in The Flash. This means James Gunn is a real person in the Dcu because he wrote Scooby-Doo 2. Simply Incredible.”
Gunn’s reply was short and simply said, “I’m canon?...

It’s hard to believe that moviegoers are just less than two weeks away from The Flash’s release. The DC film starring Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Sasha Calle, and Ben Affleck will be full of Easter Eggs and cameos relating to the comic book universe’s rich history. However, DC heroes aren’t the only things to be keeping your eye out for while watching the film. There’s also a group of famous mystery solvers under the Warner Brothers banner that have multiple references throughout The Flash, including a fun Easter Egg to one of James Gunn’s most underrated works, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.

DC Studios co-head James Gunn is officially a member of the DC Universe thanks to The Flash.
In a June 6 Twitter post, Gunn responded to a fan page's observation that he is in fact a member of the Dcu thanks to a minor Easter egg in The Flash by asking "I'm canon?" As pointed out, the young Barry Allen seen in the film has a poster for 2004's Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, which Gunn wrote, effectively cementing his place as a living person within the very same DC Universe he is now overseeing.

Hard as it is to believe, there have been 37 direct-to-video "Scooby-Doo" animated movies. This, of course, is not counting the live-action adaptations and several television specials and premieres. That's a lot of everyone's favorite scrappy, investigative dog. "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!" premiered in 1969, when writers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears developed the series for Hanna-Barbera Productions, the studio behind hits such as "The Flintstones," "The Jetsons," and "Josey and the Pussycats" (a personal favorite). The original series aired for two seasons, though the franchise has a storied history, spanning 14 different iterations, including the recent "Velma" for HBO.
"Scooby-Doo" has been an astronomical success — a mainstay of animated pop culture aficionados and casual fans alike. With so much material, it can be hard for newer fans to acclimate themselves to the long-running property. Which series should someone start with? Are the live-action adaptations any good? We'll be taking a look at...

The first episode of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You premiered over 50 years ago, and the best Scooby-Doo episodes still endure in the modern day. Hanna-Barbera made a legendary mystery cartoon that would grow up with generations to come. Not only has Scooby-Doo and the gang taught their audience how to face fears, the series always taught them that not every monster is as it seems.
Scooby and Mystery Inc. has been redone and had multiple series, animated and live-action movies based on it. Despite that, fans almost always end up coming back to the original series and the original unmasking of the villains. While there are a bunch of episodes with a high nostalgia factor, there are always some that are better than the others. The original Scooby-Doo storylines provided the blueprint for what Scooby-Doo has become complete with masked villains, haunted houses, unbreakable friendships, and iconic chase sequences.

The Five Nights at Freddy's movie has cast Matthew Lillard as its primary antagonist, neatly subverting his most famous role. Lillard is playing Five Nights at Freddy's William Afton, the murderous engineer and restaurateur responsible for building Fnaf's infamous animatronics. This character exploits Lillard's previous acting roles, recalling one in particular.
Lillard earned serious horror prestige after his performances in Scream and 13 Ghosts, both of which received wide acclaim. This is one of many reasons Lillard is ideal for Fnaf's William Afton. The Scooby Gang has been around for decades, bringing in new generations of fans with each TV series and all the best Scooby-Doo movies. Many fans reminisce about the older animated films that made them fall in love with Scooby when they were younger. The later Scooby-Doo movies have a ton of heart and were released in the late '90s to early 2000s before the release of What's New Scooby-Doo?, which later received its own set of animated films.
Many of the movies from this era are integral to pop culture and have received a ton of memes. They have also become a staple of media with loads of nostalgia to make every Scooby-Doo fan happy. While it is the Scooby-Doo TV series that holds a place in the hearts of fans, young and old, the movies often deliver just as many thrills, chills, and laughs, just on a bigger level.

Freddie Prinze Jr. regrets his Scooby-Doo movie appearances. Prinze Jr. appeared as Mystery Inc. team leader Fred in both 2002’s live-action Scooby-Doo and its 2004 follow-up Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. When news broke last month that Freddie Prinze Jr. was to potentially reprise his role as Ray Bronson in the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” franchise, it was the actor’s first time finding out about the so-called project.
In February, reports began circulating that a sequel to the 1997 and 1998 horror flicks was in the works with Prinze Jr. and co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt “in talks” to reprise their roles as Bronson and Julie James, respectively.
However, while the 47-year-old actor was recently promoting his new horror movie podcast “That Was Pretty Scary”, he revealed he had no clue about the project until his name began to appear in headlines.
He thinks the announcement was “leaked” by the production company in efforts to “get people hyped about their movie.”

When Zack Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead" dropped in 2004, it earned scrutiny and praise alike. As a loose re-imagining of George A. Romero's 1978 zombie classic, it was evaluated against the original "Dawn of the Dead." Fans noticed the difference immediately; whereas the Godfather of Horror set his apocalypse survivors in a mall as a commentary on consumerism, Snyder's mall was one great, glossy epicenter for action sequences. Proponents of Snyder's movie, like /Film's Joshua Meyer, hailed said sequences like its famous cold open as the best possible use of Snyder's music video experience, whereas Romero would tell Simon Pegg in 2005 (re: Snyder's remake), "The first 15, 20 minutes were terrific, but it sort of lost its reason for being. It was more of a video game."
For screenwriter and now-DC Studios co-head James Gunn, it's true that social commentary on consumerism wasn't at the forefront of his mind during the writing process.

Long before she was Buffy, Sarah Michelle Gellar was a child star, landing commercial gigs. The star has had many prominent roles since then, so it’s unlikely most think of her for her Burger King ad. But it certainly made an impact on the actor. Gellar recounts how she was sued by a competitor at just 5 years old.

One of the first campaign ads Gellar did was for Burger King back in 1981. The commercial caused the 5-year-old to get into some legal trouble.

James Gunn’s a household name now thanks to his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and his upcoming role shepherding the new DC Universe. However, one of his most underrated gems of the 2000s was his scripts for Scooby-Doo and its sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. The first film in particular was very ahead of its time in terms of its edgier humorous style and brilliant parody of its source material.

Before James Gunn was the co-Head of DC Studios, he investigated bizarre happenings alongside Mystery Incorporated for 2004’s Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. The family-friendly adventure found Scooby and the gang saving Coolsville from an army of monsters they’ve defeated in the past. While the film’s final cut is safe for kiddies, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who plays Dahpne in the movie, says Gunn’s original script was racier, and the cast was down to make it happen.
Speaking with “Watch What Happens Live,” Gellar says Gunn shot an intimate kiss between her character and Linda Cardellini’s Velma. “There was a steamy kiss. It got cut. There was an actual kiss between Daphne and Velma that got cut,” Gellar said. “I feel like the world wants to see it. I don’t know where it is.” Additionally, Gellar says an insult Daphne made to Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.) about...

Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed during a recent visit on “Watch What Happens Live” that 2002’s live-action “Scooby Doo” movie shot and cut a “steamy” gay kiss between her character, Daphne, and Linda Cardellini’s Velma. The film also starred Matthew Lillard as Shaggy and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred. Gellar said all four actors signed onto the James Gunn-scripted film because it was “less family-friendly,” only for the theatrical release to remove a lot of the risqué moments.
“There was a steamy kiss. It got cut. There was an actual kiss between Daphne and Velma that got cut,” Gellar said. “I feel like the world wants to see it. I don’t know where it is.”
Gellar also revealed that an insult Daphne made to Fred about Fred being gay was also cut from the “Scooby-Doo” theatrical release.
“There was a great line too that I’ll never forget,...
