The iconic Ghost in the Shell franchise has just received a new website, with more from the series on the way.
Freshly launched on Oct. 31, 2023, the site collects the entirety of the property's manifestations to date. This includes the original Masamune Shirow manga that spawned the franchise, as well as the TV series, the legendary anime movie series and even the live-action Hollywood adaptation starring Scarlet Johansson. When people think about action-based series, they tend to think of shonen anime. Some of the biggest action series of all time are battle shonen, whether it's Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, or modern series like Jujutsu Kaisen. However, shonen isn't the only sub-genre licensed to produce action anime, especially since not all shonen are battle shonen to begin with.
Other demographics have proven quite capable of creating action anime as well. While other demographics might construct the action differently, overall it just means more cool series. Action series outside shonen might not rely on the power of friendship, but that doesn't make them any less engaging.

It’s been a long time coming, but anime veteran Masayuki Yoshihara finally helmed his first feature-length film with the 2023 release Komada — A Whisky Family.
Yoshihara is best known for his anime projects on television, with credits including Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East and Dragon Ball Z. In 2013, he helmed the well-received anime series The Eccentric Family for P.A. Works, based on the popular novel by Tomihiko Morimi. The Kyoto-set fantasy series ran for two seasons (25 episodes in total) and firmly established Yoshihara as a television director, the next step was to helm a fully-fledged anime movie.
The opportunity to direct a feature would come with Komada, which screened this week at the Tokyo International Film Festival and was also part of the competition selection at Annecy Festival, and the Anima’t section at Sitges Festival this year.

Anime can be enjoyed anytime on a Blu-Ray DVD, and fans may like the unconditional permanence of physical media like that. Still, collecting Blu-Rays can be costly for anime fans who like to watch a lot of series, so streaming is the best way to watch all the best and most popular anime titles out there for binge sessions. A small handful of familiar, reliable streaming platforms are ready to deliver.
Some anime series aren't available to stream anywhere, such as the 1997 Berserk anime and Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex, but fortunately, those are the exception. Plenty of other top-tier anime series are streaming right now, and interested anime fans are encouraged to visit those sites and apps to begin the animated adventure.

While the original 1995 Ghost in the Shell is hailed as a classic for cyberpunk and anime, fans shouldn't miss out on the anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The series' dub is hailed as an all-time great as well; with its mature, adult-oriented story making anime more accesible for adults.
Stand Alone Complex follows Major Motoko Kusanagi and her team at Section 9 as they investigate an incident which spirals out into a far bigger conspiracy. Told with a mix of plot-heavy story arcs and stand-alone episodes, Stand Alone Complex offers excellent characterization, a captivating plot, and a look at a future that feels a little too close for comfort in modern times.

The greatest pieces of art aren't always the most popular. In fact, many of the greatest masterworks required the assistance of time for their true message to be appreciated by people, and that fact applies to the art form of anime just as much as any other.
Those series that don't initially get the love they deserve outside a small, loyal fan base are often given the title of "cult classic" due to their cult-like following and their status as a classic in the entertainment medium. Many cult classic anime series were simply ahead of their time — either due to their avant-garde visual styling, unorthodox approach to storytelling, or their futuristic themes that managed to become even more relevant as time went on.

The anime community is always welcoming new fans from around the world, but many non-fans aren't sure where to start or why they even should. They need a gateway series to launch their interest in anime, and while some shows are perfect, others cater to enfranchised anime fans.
Several factors go into making a great gateway anime, such as high production values to make a good impression of the industry or being easy and convenient to find on DVD or online streaming platforms like Crunchyroll. Another, often overlooked factor is that a good introductory anime needs a linear, engaging plot to hook new viewers and give them a story worth remembering.

Ghost in the Shell isn't just a must-see for fans of cyberpunk fiction -- it's also an outright classic franchise among anime fans as a whole. Spawned from a manga that would later receive a movie adaptation, the property continues to be incredibly popular and long-lived. New anime adaptations continue to be made, ensuring that longtime fans can always see new adventures of Major Kusanagi. Unfortunately, this can leave newcomers confused in terms of where to start.
Both cyberpunk and anime have become increasingly popular throughout the world, and it's left those who've never watched Ghost in the Shell wanting to get into it. However, with so many anime shows and films out there, it's easy to question how much is "necessary" in order to be caught up. Here's a look at not only how the shows relate to each other, but also which one is the best entry point for newcomers to the franchise.

This year is proving excellent for anime fans of all tastes, with the likes of Chainsaw Man and Mob Psycho 100 among the heavy hitters still poised to close out the year. There's an anime series for fans of just about every subgenre, and crime dramas have collectively made for some of the strongest serialized stories.
That's also partly thanks to other subgenres like sci-fi and upbeat heists that can complement the series' premises. From gritty crime-noir like Monster and 91 Days to the sci-fi dystopia of the recent Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, crime anime impressively and consistently flexes its depth.

Kirk Baily, the actor best known for his role as dim-witted camp counselor Kevin “Ug” Lee on the early Nickelodeon sitcom “Salute Your Shorts,” died Feb. 27 in Los Angeles. His domestic partner, Ranjani Brow, confirmed that he died after battling lung cancer. He was 59.
Baily got his start as a sound coordinator for the 1988 cult classic “Killer Klowns From Outer Space,” before he was cast in “Salute Your Shorts,” which premiered in 1991. Created by Steve Slavkin and based on a book of the same name he wrote with Thomas Hill, “Salute Your Shorts” premiered July 1991 and ran for two seasons. The series starred Danny Cooksey, Erik MacArthur, Blake Soper, Michael Bower, Trevor Eyster, Venus DeMilo Thomas, Heidi Lucas and Megan Berwick as various campers at the fictional Camp Anawanna. Baily’s character, Ug, acted as an antagonist toward the kids, as well as the most frequent victim of their pranks.

Twenty years after delivering Peter Jackson’s mega Oscar-winning “Lord of the Rings” trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved book series, New Line Cinema is re-teaming with Warner Bros. Animation for an original anime feature building off Tolkien’s universe.
Veteran anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama (the “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” and “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex” TV series) will take fans on a journey into a legendary battle that shaped Middle-earth, and set the stage for the epic events seen in the original film trilogy.

The J.R.R. Tolkien franchise is heading back to the big screen in a fresh New Line and Warner Animation anime title The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. I’m told that the Oscar-winning feature architects Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh are not involved with the project as we speak, but that will be determined down the road. Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings: Return of the King scribe Philippa Boyens will be a consultant on the new project directed by Kenji Kamiyama. The pic is being fast-tracked with animation work done by Sola Entertainment. Voice casting is currently underway. Pic will be distributed around the globe by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Since the resounding worldwide success of the original 1995 Ghost in the Shell anime, there have been several spinoff series. One of the most popular storylines to emerge from its cyberpunk universe comes from season one of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Throughout the season, elite police task force Section 9 attempts to uncover the identity of the ingenious cyber-hacker the Laughing Man.

Netflix has given us our first look at their upcoming Ghost in the Shell: Sac_2045 anime series in the form of a brief teaser trailer. It’s doesn’t give us much, but it does show off the animation style of the series, which is different from anything I’ve seen from the Ghost in the Shell franchise in the past.
The series is set in the year 2045, and “after global capitalism has defaulted, Japan's elite Section 9 begins conducting covert cyber operations.”
The series will be directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) and Kenji Kamiyama, and newcomer Ilya Kuvshinow is heading up the animation and character design for the series.
The new Ghost in the Shell anime is confirmed to have two seasons so far with 12 episodes planned for each. We don’t have any other info to share on the series right now, but check out the teaser below and...

Netflix’s major push into anime continues with the announcement the streaming giant is planning a brand new “Ghost in the Shell” anime for a 2020 debut. The series, officially titled “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045,” is being co-directed by Kenji Kamiyama (“Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex”) and Shinji Araki (“Appleseed”). It’s unclear at this point whether or not the project is a feature film or a television series.
“Ghost in the Shell” originally started as a hugely popular manga series written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. The series was famously adapted into a 1995 anime film of the same name, directed by Mamoru Oshii. The anime “Ghost in the Shell” is largely credited with influencing science-fiction cinema into the 21st century, most evidently “The Matrix” soundtrack.
While Netflix has not revealed further details about “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045,” here’s hoping the voice cast remains culturally appropriate.

Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 will have directors Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) & Shinji Araki (Appleseed) on board. The new title will be a collaboration between studios Production I.G. and Sola Digital Arts.
Production I.G animated all of the anime projects for Ghost in the Shell while Sola’s credits include Appleseed Alpha, Blade Runner Black Out 2022 and also the new Ultraman anime that will bow on Netflix next year. The anime will be “reborn,” according to Netflix, by changing itself into a new form, 3Dcg, pioneered by Aramaki and Sola. Netflix is touting it as a “next-generation animation film.”

There’s a new Blade Runner anime series going into development called Blade Runner - Black Lotus, and it was inspired by Blade Runner 2049.
We may never see another Blade Runner movie again because they have been box office bombs, but at least we will be getting more stories set in the universe in anime form! Hey, it’s better than nothing!
The plot of the series is being kept under wraps, it’s been confirmed that the story will “take place in 2032 and will include some familiar characters from the Blade Runner universe.”
The series will be produced by Alcon Entertainment, WarnerMedia’s Adult Swim, and Crunchyroll. The series will air on Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block. Crunchyroll will handle worldwide streaming.
Blade Runner – Black Lotus will consist of 13 half-hour episodes, and the animation is being done by Sola Digital Arts, who also worked on the new Ultraman series.
