Exclusive: Wattpad/Webtoons has hired Josh Campbell & Matt Stuecken to adapt I’m the Grim Reaper from the webtoon created by Grave Weaver.
Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi will executive produce the series with Weaver, who’ll also team on the development process.
I’m the Grim Reaper centers on Scarlet, a young woman who wakes up in the ninth circle of hell with no idea how she got there. Satan offers to send Scarlet back to Earth if she’ll work as his reaper. But it doesn’t take long for Scarlet to realize that Satan’s offer is even worse than she feared. The story slots perfectly into Raimi’s wheelhouse, striking a deft balance between scares, gore and humor.
Campbell & Stuecken sold their procedural The Interpreter to NBC last season, with Michael Peterson showrunning and Morris Chestnut attached to star. This season, they...

It’s a story — the attempted genocide of Europe’s Jews by the Nazis and their willing executioners — that has been told many times before. But, say the creators of the new German TV drama The Interpreter of Silence, it’s a story that needs to be told again and again.
The five-part limited series, which bowed on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ worldwide Nov. 15, is up for this year’s Critics Choice Awards in the best foreign-language TV series category. The period drama will go up against the South Korean series Bargain, The Glory, Mask Girl and Moving, the French crime series Lupin, and the Italian mafia drama The Good Mothers.
Set in Frankfurt in 1963, The Interpreter of Silence follows the events of Eva Bruhns, a 24-year-old German woman, played by Katharina Stark, who gets a job as a Polish-to-German interpreter in the Auschwitz trials, the...

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

He passed away surrounded by family in Vienna, according to a statement released by Austria’s national theater, the Burgtheater. No cause of death was given.

He joined the Burgtheater in 1999, according to the institution, and was made an honorary member in 2019.

The decision to re-title “The Interpreter” to “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant” is an odd one, at least on the surface. For 25 years, the filmmaker’s forte has been whiz-bang action-crime movies like “Snatch,” “RocknRolla,” and the recently released “Operation Fortune,” in which his (usually English) characters rattle off banter like actors in an improv warm-up game.
“The Covenant,” on the other hand, is arguably the director’s first foray into purely dramatic territory, the kind that has thus far occupied the margins of his work. It’s an Afghanistan war film about duty and guilt, focused on a U.S. soldier’s debt to his Afghan interpreter. The premise is hardly “Ritchie-esque” upon first glance, with a straightforward intensity that conceals no surprise tonal oscillations. However, it remains firmly within Ritchie’s stylistic wheelhouse — his command of the swiftly moving camera, and its focus on violent masculine subjects,...

With cameras just about ready to roll on The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare_, is yet to see a release here (or in much of the world), but in that it’s not exactly typical Guy Ritchie fare, even with lashings of muscular action. Oh, and yes, his name actually is in the official title. Check out the trailer here:
No London. No geezers. No gangsters. No quips. No dodgy nicknames. The Gentlemen this most assuredly ain’t. Instead, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant – initially titled The Interpreter – looks like a tense, emotionally-driven military thriller that’s more concerned with the effects of war than the FX of it all.
Written by the Wrath Of Man director alongside regular collaborators Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, the story here centres on Jake Gyllenhaal’s Army Sergeant John Kinley, who ends up being rescued by his interpreter (Dar Salim) when a tour in...

Jake Gyllenhaal has unfinished business to resolve in the first trailer for director Guy Ritchie’s upcoming film The Covenant.
The MGM military thriller, hitting theaters April 21, stars Gyllenhaal as Army Sergeant John Kinley, who is rescued during a tour in Afghanistan by his interpreter, played by Dar Salim. The footage shows Kinley grappling with whether to put himself back in harm’s way to rescue Ahmed.
“If it wasn’t enough for him to carry me across those mountains, now he’s hiding in a hole somewhere,” Gyllenhaal’s character says somberly in the trailer. “I should be in that hole.”
He later adds, “Ahmed and his family are in trouble. I am gonna have to get him out myself.”
The cast also includes Alexander Ludwig, Antony Starr, Jason Wong, Bobby Schofield, Sean Sagar, Sina Parvaneh, Emily Beecham, Cyrus Khodaveisi and Christian Ochoa.

By now, it's safe to say you know pretty much what you're getting when you see the name "Guy Ritchie" attached to a trailer. Some gruff, fast-talking, and probably criminal characters are going to be stuck in impossibly tight circumstances that can only be solved by weapons and wit and a fair bit of off-color tastelessness. Oh, and there's a pretty good chance that you'll either love or hate it — nothing in-between. The gangster-loving director behind "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," "Snatch," "Sherlock Holmes," and most recently "The Gentlemen" and "Wrath of Man" has fully established his own recognizable niche and has mostly been content to stay right there.
So when word first hit that Ritchie would be teaming up with star Jake Gyllenhaal for an action-thriller following a soldier soon after the United States' invasion of Afghanistan in the early 2000s, most expected another controversial shoot-'em-up in the...

You can tell if somebody’s watched German Netflix series Dark by the furrow in their brow and the delirium in their eyes. The 2017 – 2020 time-travel mystery required a flip-chart of graphs and diagrams to explain, but proved a cult hit for Netflix and led to its creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar signing a deal with the streamer. 1899 (read our spoiler-free review here) is the result.
“Knowing that we did Dark, everyone can be assured that [1899] is going to be something weird and wild and crazy,” Friese promised Deadline about her and Odar’s new Netflix series. The writer-directors vowed not to repeat themselves with the new eight-episode period drama, but still to give their audience a fun puzzle that returns to the pair’s mystery roots.
Job done. 1899 is an addictive game for viewers to play. Set aboard a steam ship crossing from England to America at...

It looks like that Road House reboot that Prime Video is financing has started shooting, with star Jake Gyllenhaal posting a pic of him and director Doug Liman calling action via Instagram:

While I’m still not sure a Road House remake is a great idea, the fact that Gyllenhaal is starring, with a director of Liman’s calibre shooting it, makes me hope it’s a great little movie. That said, look at Gyllenhaal’s hair in that pic. What is going on here, Jake? How could you remake a film like Road House and not rock a Patrick Swayze-style mullet? Or at least feather it a bit? All kidding aside, Gyllenhaal seems to be sporting a lower-key look in the lead than Swayze did in the original. This probably isn’t a bad idea,...

Updated: UFC champion Conor McGregor has joined the cast of the “Road House” remake, as first reported by Deadline. Sources say that he will be playing an original character in the movie and not a version of himself, as the project does center on a former UFC fighter (Jake Gyllenhaal). Production is starting in the Dominican Republic later in August.
Earlier: You want to fight? Jake Gyllenhaal is set to lead Amazon Prime Video’s reimagining of the 1989 MGM film “Road House.”
Famously starring Patrick Swayze, “Road House” centered on a bouncer with a mysterious past who overhauls a rowdy bar and takes down local corruption in the process. For the remake, Gyllenhaal plays a former UFC fighter who, per an official synopsis, takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble roadhouse in the Florida Keys, but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.

Jake Gyllenhaal and director Doug Liman are in talks for MGM’s planned remake of the classic movie ‘Road House.’
The original movie, which starred Patrick Swayze, was released in 1989 and saw Swayze play the role of James Dalton, a zen bouncer hired to clean up a rough-and-tumble bar in Missouri. Dalton’s successful enterprise attracts the ire of the corrupt businessman (Ben Gazzara) that controls the small town. Although not a massive box office hit at the time, the film has gone on to become a cult classic and is dubbed one of Swayze’s best performances.
Although a production start date has yet to be confirmed, the project is rumoured to be high on the agenda at MGM.
Also in news – Tom Hardy & Channing Tatum to lead Afghanistan movie

MGM is ramping up speed on its remake of “Road House,” with Jake Gyllenhaal in talks to star and director Doug Liman circling the project.
While a production start date has not been set, MGM higher-ups reportedly see the project as a priority for the studio. No deals have been signed with Gyllenhaal or Liman yet, though the two are in active talks.
Should both Gyllenhaal and Liman sign on, the “Road House” remake would mark the first collaboration between the actor and director. The pair already have busy schedules ahead, with Gyllenhaal set to begin shooting Guy Ritchie’s Afghanistan War thriller “The Interpreter” and Liman gearing up for production on his adventure film “Everest.”

Exclusive: The Double Deuce may finally be reopening its doors. Sources tell Deadline that MGM’s Road House remake is gaining momentum, with Jake Gyllenhaal in talks to star and Doug Liman in talks to direct. When this would go into production is still Tbd as Gyllenhaal is about to shoot Guy Ritchie’s The Interpreter and Liman is currently prepping his Everest pic, though insiders add that execs are already meeting with writers to rewrite a previous draft and view the film as a high priority. Anthony Bagarozzi & Charles Mondry wrote a prior draft.
Released in 1989, the original film starred Patrick Swayze as Dalton, a bouncer hired to clean up one of the rowdiest, loudest bars in Missouri, The Double Deuce. Swayze’s character is put to the test when he needs to protect the town from a corrupt businessman. The film became an instant hit and is still...

American Film Market Trends
Solid packages: It’s hard to recall an AFM that had as many solid packages as this one. The emergence from Covid lockdowns and the lack of a market in Toronto this year have helped boost the offering. Since we were last in your inbox, we’ve also broken news of buzzy new projects from Martin McDonagh, Daisy Ridley (pictured) and Mathieu Kassovitz, and Guy Ritchie and Jake Gyllenhaal. Yesterday, we announced a new UK road trip from arthouse director Carol Morley which has Jane Campion aboard as an exec-producer. AFM has traditionally been known for its brawn, and while that is available this market, what stands out is the number of prestige dramas. Buyers we’ve spoken to have been particularly high on the scripts for movies like Firebrand and Lee.
Who runs the world?: As the market draws to a close, that leads us to another interesting – and positive – trend, which also counters the AFM norm: the number of strong female-fronted packages. Between Lee, Firebrand, MindFall, Ballerina, Role Play, Beth And Don, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Mamma Mafia, rarely can there have been as many female-fronted projects leading the slates of the major sellers. Now we wait for the deals to drop.
Climate Content Pledge
Cop-in: David Attenborough may have been appearing on TV screens for nigh on seven decades, but until now the question of what television can do to help combat global warming was on the fringes. That all changed at this week’s Cop 26 in Glasgow, as 12 UK networks signed up to a Climate Content Pledge, which includes an uprooting of commissioning processes to consider climate themes and a doubling down on shows that help audiences understand how the world can reach net zero.
‘Collective responsibility’: Signatories to the pledge include the heads of the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 along with Discovery and Sky in the UK. Speaking at Cop, C4 CEO Alex Mahon said broadcasters have a “collective responsibility” and can use their different programming strengths to reach more audiences. Those strengths equate to quiz shows and entertainment for ITV, sport for Sky and, according to former scientist Mahon, Celebrity Trash Monsters for C4. UK TV truly is the home of plurality.
Middle Eastern In The Spotlight
Strike while the Irons is hot: Andreas had the exclusive on production wrapping on Cello this week, a Jeremy Irons and Tobin Bell horror that is the first in a new wave of English-language projects looking to film in Saudi Arabia, which has been ramping up its film and TV ambitions. Only a handful of sizable English-language movies have shot in the country in recent decades. The Russo Brothers’ Cherry was the biggest back in 2019 but the number of productions is growing as investment increasingly flows in and out of the controversial state, which remains a lightning rod for debate due to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and human rights abuses. Oh and something about a UK football team.
Growing interest: Among productions to shoot in the country recently are a Discovery Channel documentary on the AlUla region, narrated by Irons, and an AlUla brand campaign commercial directed by Bruno Aveillan. National Geographic is due to film two programs on the region and the area has seen multiple travel programs. This month, production is due to get underway on the Gerard Butler action-thriller Kandahar from Thunder Road, which will be one of, if not the biggest, English-language movies to shoot in the country. It’s all happening. At the Cannes Film Festival this year, Saudi officials were touting the striking AlUla valley, new production facilities and the country’s film and TV tax rebate of 35%. The nation is due to host its first major film festival next month, the Red Sea International Film Festival. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
Midas Man on ice
Help!: Another hot one from Andreas this week, who had the scoop on one of the most talked about films of the moment, Midas Man, pausing production, with director Jonas Åkerlund unlikely to continue. Åkerlund is “taking a break”, according to the production, with sources indicating he is unlikely to return. More likely to come on this one as the Brian Epstein biopic seeks a new director.
New Look BBC Comedy Team
Petrie Dish: BBC Comedy Director Jon Petrie (pictured), the most powerful person in UK comedy commissioning, unveiled his new-look team this week, picking producers from some of the nation’s biggest shows in his first major intervention since taking over from Shane Allen in September. In comes Trying’s Emma Lawson, E4’s Navi Lamba and Stath Lets Flats producer Seb Barwell (temporarily), as the seven-strong team is firmed up. Petrie’s move reassembles a team that was decimated last year with a spate of departures, as his predecessor Allen, Head of Comedy Kate Daughton and Commissioning Editors Sarah Asante and Alex Moody all departed within a few weeks of each other.
Russian Out Of Space
The Challenge: Don’t miss Diana Lodderhose’s exclusive sit-down with Russian director Klim Shipenko and actor Yuliya Peresild, who last month became the first film crew to shoot scenes in Outer Space for upcoming film The Challenge. Well worth your time.

In a week of mostly static VOD charts, something peculiar happened: “Spiral: From the Book of Saw,” the only major new premium VOD release, failed to dislodge “Wrath of Man” from its top overall position.
Both are genre thrillers, each released for $19.99 after their third weekend in theaters. “Spiral” is the more recent, has a 40 percent higher theatrical gross ($21.8 million to $15.6 million), and is part of a lucrative and long-running franchise. However, it’s “Wrath” that was #1 at three of the four lists below (#2 at Apple/iTunes), while “Spiral” lagged at #2 in the two charts that track by revenues and lower (#4 and #6) at Apple/iTunes and Google TV, both of which chart by number of rentals.
Why? “Wrath” had a much better Cinemascore, while the B- for “Spiral” was at the lower end for the franchise. “Wrath” has a proven action star in Statham at a time when a known star can create impulse buys.

Czech director Jiri Menzel, who helmed the Oscar-winning feature Closely Watched Trains, died on Saturday after a long battle with an undisclosed illness. He was 82.
His wife, Olga confirmed his death on Instagram and Facebook. “It was our utmost honor and privilege that we could be with you on your last pilgrimage to eternity,” she wrote, translated to English. “Your love for me, and for our girls was the kind of love that never lays down conditions.”
She added, “I am also grateful to you for the last three years, as hard as they were. You kept always helping me with your courage, with your appetite and your will to live, and with your humor. I wish for you “a pretty little cloud” as you often used to say… Death cannot end anything. I believe we will meet again, in whatever way. It simply must be so because I feel it cannot be otherwise.

Oscar-winning Czech director, writer and actor Jiri Menzel died Saturday following a long illness.
Menzel’s death was confirmed by his wife, Olga, who posted the news on Instagram and Facebook late Sunday. Menzel was 82.
Winner of the Academy Award for best foreign-language film for the 1966 bittersweet Nazi occupation story “Closely Watched Trains,” Menzel was a leading figure of the Czech New Wave along with boundary-breaking directors such as Milos Forman and Vera Chytilova
Also nominated for a foreign-language Oscar in 1986 for the dark comedy “My Sweet Little Village,” Menzel was celebrated for his ironic takes on life, satires of authority figures and classic Czech character studies.
A longtime collaborator with Czech novelist Bohumil Hrabal, who wrote the book on which “Closely Watched Trains” was based, Menzel also adapted his books “Cutting it Short” and “Larks on a String.” The latter film, a 1969 send-up of young people forcibly recruited to a labor camp,...

Peacock, the NBCUniversal streaming service that launched in April in Comcast homes, started expanding nationally overnight as Tuesday turned to Wednesday on the East Coast.
Along with Comcast’s X1 and Flex, Peacock will be available on Apple and Google platforms, Microsoft’s Xbox, Vizio and LG smart TVs, Cox Contour and, starting next week, Sony PlayStation. Talks are ongoing with major distributors like Amazon Fire and Roku, but those two top platforms are still on the sidelines as of now.

Earl Cameron, one of the first Black actors to be cast in major roles in British films, has died at the age of 102.
His agent confirmed to TheWrap that Cameron died in his sleep on Friday.
“Our family have been overwhelmed by the outpourings of love and respect we have received at the news of our father’s passing,” his children said in a statement obtained by The Guardian. “As an artist and as an actor he refused to take roles that demeaned or stereotyped the character of people of colour. He was truly a man who stood by his moral principles and was inspirational.”
He was born in Bermuda in 1917, having come to the U.K. in 1939 after serving in the British Merchant Navy During World War II. When he arrived in the U.K., he began acting in stage productions before landing his first film role in 1951’s “Pool of London,...

Earl Cameron, one of the first major Black actors in British cinema, died on Friday at his home in England, his representative confirmed to Variety. He was 102.
Cameron was born in Pembroke, Bermuda, on Aug. 8, 1917, and joined the British Merchant Navy before pursuing a career in theater and film.
“Pool of London,” directed by Basil Dearden in 1951, was Cameron’s first film role. He played a sailor named Johnny Lambert who has a relationship with a white woman, played by Susan Shaw. The noir crime film is best known for portraying the first interracial romance in a British film.
Dearden and Cameron teamed up again in 1959 on the crime drama “Sapphire,” which examined racism in London toward immigrants from the West Indies. The film was progressive for its time and won the BAFTA Award for best film.

The rise and crash of WeWork and its founder Adam Neumann is getting the big-screen treatment from Blumhouse and Universal.
Screenwriter Charles Randolph, who won an adapted screenplay Oscar for “The Big Short,” is on board to write the film.
The troubled shared-workplace startup pulled the plug on an initial public offering in September after investors raised questions against its mounting losses. It accepted a bailout from SoftBank in October.
Blumhouse will produce and is adapting the movie from Katrina Brooker’s reporting and upcoming book, to be published by W. W. Norton, on the intertwined lives and ambitions of Neumann and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son. Brooker is a senior contributing writer for Fast Company. "These are the end times..." Lionsgate has debuted a full-length official trailer for the film Bombshell, the new project from Oscar-winning screenwriter Charles Randolph. A few brave women decide to take on Fox News boss Roger Ailes and the toxic male culture he presided over at the propaganda network. Based on the true story, the actual real-world scandal, and how it all went down. This seems like the major social-political December release of this year, and early word is that it will make an impact when it releases. Bombshell stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, John Lithgow, Kate McKinnon, Connie Britton, Mark Duplass, Rob Delaney, Malcolm McDowell, and Allison Janney. This is a potent, exciting trailer about a film that is definitely going to stir up some shit. I just don't like that song choice at the end! The rest of it looks very good, though. Here's the full-length...

The film by Mátyás Prikler broaches the topics of politics and power in current Western democracies. Slovakian producer Mátyás Prikler, of MPhilms, made his first feature-length directorial outing, Fine, Thanks, in 2013, after co-writing it with Marek Leščák. Prikler mostly focused on producing after his first directorial feature; however, he has recently been preparing his next feature-length project under the title Power. Teaming up with Leščák once again on writing duties, his sophomore feature marks a departure from the social-realist drama he debuted with. Power is intended to be a political thriller and crime film, a genre for which there is a considerable appetite in domestic theatres (see the news and the article). The film broaches the topics of politics and power in modern-day Western democracies. In it, a high-ranking politician kills a child...
