Sex & Nudity

  • No actual sex or nudity is depicted other than the bare back of one character in one scene and cleavage of women. There is a scene with women who may have been characterized as prostitutes, but there is no sexual activity or reference shown.

Violence & Gore

  • There is some violence, although quite intense, which includes stick beatings and characters taking blows to the face.
  • A child attacks another child resulting in a black eye, the child who precipitated the event is beaten over a chair with a whip.
  • One short but very intense and upsetting murder scene where a character is beaten to death with a cane; blood is shown splattering and the shot cuts to the aftermath of the event, in which another character walks up a flight of stairs and opens the door to the room to find the floor ahead of her covered in blood. Very disturbing, although the corpse is not shown.
  • A child is shot in the arm and although we get a brief view of the wound, there is no detail, although blood is shown around the wound from where he has bled.
  • A child tries to escape from his area of living by running away and screaming for help. He is ultimately caught, brought back, and beaten with a cane with heartless verbal abuse shouted to him. Another character soon stops the violence.
  • A character accidentally hangs himself while trying to run away from a mob.
  • There are scenes of physical and mental abuse throughout the movie that are often quite intense.

Profanity

  • No modern profanity exits with the exceptions of "damn" and "hell" respectively.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • People are shown drinking and smoking in one scene. It is implied that the youngsters imbibe gin with their water.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There are many intense scenes throughout the whole movie, especially towards the end. The movie does not let up on much of the harshness of the main character's life, and scenes of abuse and neglect are common. Some of the moderate violence is quite intense. The end scene is upsetting. Fagin is presumed to be hanged.
