Horror movies often subvert innocent childhood icons, like imaginary friends, to create unexpected chills. Evil imaginary friends are a common trope in the horror genre, serving as a major red flag for viewers. Horror movies like "May" and "Hide and Seek" showcase the terrifying consequences of characters' relationships with their imaginary friends.
Although imaginary friends might seem like a sweet, harmless part of childhood, plenty of horror movies have made them a terrifying part of their stories. One of the most effective ways of scaring a horror movie viewer is by subverting a seemingly innocent icon of childhood. From Chucky, the killer doll of the Child’s Play movies, to Stephen King’s Pennywise, the It villain that made clowns chilling, there are countless examples of horror movies subverting cozy pieces of childhood nostalgia and making them unexpectedly creepy. Some movies, such as the indie hit Skinamarink, even make their heroes children to underline this idea.

Signature Entertainment in the UK has debuted another new UK trailer for an indie psychological thriller titled Some Other Woman, a film directed by the actor Joel David Moore (most well known as Norm in the Avatar movies). He has also directed a few other feature films before this, including Hide and Seek in 2021. This one already opened in US theaters at the beginning of January - we posted the other US trailer back then. The mysterious thriller film follows a woman whisked away to a tropical island by her husband's work. As the months turn to years and unable to leave the island, she finds her life slowly taken over by another woman, piece by piece. Some Other Woman stars Amanda Crew, Tom Felton, Ashley Greene, Joel David Moore, Brooke Lyons, plus former NBA star Rick Fox. This doesn't look like the most impressive thriller,...

“We didn’t know what we were doing,” says Josh Schwartz, creator of The O.C. For the show’s first few episodes, the music choices were simply plucked from his own iPod. But once the now-legendary music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas came aboard, the show turned into a weekly showcase for some of the best music of the ’00s — and a key force behind the mainstream rise of a certain brand of indie-leaning rock in that decade, from Death Cab for Cutie to the Killers. It didn’t hurt that...

Out of all the film categories out there, perhaps the strangest, most niche subgenre is the world of "so bad it's good" cinema. Why would you want to watch something objectively bad? It's pretty simple: To get inebriated on your favorite (legal) substances with friends and watch a bizarre piece of filmmaking that leads to some of the most beautifully hilarious and surreal movie-going experiences you can get. With that being said, the line between "so bad it's good" and just plain unwatchable is a blurry one. It's hard to explain what makes the badness of classics such as The Room or Birdemic enjoyable compared to the mediocrity of something like Robert De Niro's Hide And Seek, which is why we bad film enjoyers must seek out good-bad movies through rumors and recommendations. They're not exactly well-known, well-marketed films after all... Luckily for you, dear reader, we come with...

The Queen of Diamonds game in Alice in Borderland is briefly mentioned in the Netflix adaptation but is not explored further. It likely involved intellect as the governing suit was diamonds. In the King of Hearts game, participants must navigate a labyrinth while evading a mysterious beast. The live-action adaptation captures the game's suspenseful atmosphere. The Ten of Clubs game, exclusive to the Netflix adaptation, takes place in a match factory where challengers must complete bingo cards with limited matches. The eerie ambiance and ticking clock add to the challenge.
In the dystopian virtual world of Alice in Borderland, survival hinges on navigating a series of perilous games where each decision is a matter of life or death. Robert De Niro... The man, the myth, the legend. For over 40 years, De Niro has sat at the top of the Hollywood Golden Boy's table, proudly and deservedly lauded as one of the greatest actors of all time. He has one of the strongest, highest-quality bodies of work in film. From the many different starring and supporting roles across Martin Scorcese's classic filmography to the winning streak of wholesome comedy roles in nostalgic 2000s darlings like Meet The Parents or Silver Linings Playbook, De Niro has dominated pop culture through both arthouse cinema and commercial blockbusters, making him one of the few people deserving of being called a household name. In 1990, he lent his enormous talent to the horror genre for the first time in Scorsese's 1991 remake of Cape Fear playing the deranged killer out for revenge, Max Cady, with taunting glee. It's perhaps because of this...

The "Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy" consists of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End, all of which combine horror and comedy. The "Unholy Trinity of Folk Horror Trilogy" includes Witchfinder General, The Blood on Satan's Claw, and The Wicker Man, which are all British films that delve into creepy folklore. The "John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy" features The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and In the Mouth of Madness, each exploring potential apocalyptic scenarios.
Horror cinema has produced some excellent trilogies over the years, but those who have already seen all the popular titles might be interested in different, "unofficial" horror movie trilogies. The original Evil Dead movies and Poltergeist sagas, the Blade films, and the Maniac Cop movies are just some of the franchises that stopped at three installments (not including reboots). While they're enjoyable, there's only so many times anyone can watch even the best horror movies of all time.

Teen shows always delivered shocking twists and turns, whether it was break-ups, secret siblings, or reveals of mysterious killers. From Pretty Little Liars' big reveals to Riverdale's magic system, teen TV was always full of shocking events that kept audiences coming back for more. These shows never fail to deliver unexpected jaw-dropping moments, often to mixed reactions.

Jacinda Barrett and Gabriel Macht have been married for more than two decades, and their love seems to be going strong. Macht starred on "Suits," a show that's been having a steady resurgence this summer since it hit Netflix, and this has sparked renewed interest in his love life - particularly in the fact that his wife, Jacinda Barrett, stars as his love interest in season two.
However, the pair didn't meet on the "Suits" set. They actually were already married and had a child together when Macht began his tenure on the show, which also stars Meghan Markle, in 2011. "Suits" also wasn't even the first time Macht and Barrett appeared on screen together; they both had roles in the 2009 film "Middle Men." Both Macht and Barrett have their own acting careers, with Barrett appearing in "Bridget Jones's Diary: The Edge of Reason," "The Namesake," and, more recently, "Hide and Seek.

If you're just catching up on "Suits," you may have noticed the long-running series is packed with cameos connected to the cast in real life. One exciting appearance is by actor Jacinda Barrett, Gabriel Macht's real-life wife of almost 20 years. She plays Harvey's love interest in season two, a former lawyer named Zoe. Though the Australian actor is only in three episodes, the pair's chemistry is undeniable.
In season two, we learn that Zoe, a fellow Harvard Law School graduate and former Pearson Hardman colleague, dated Harvey five years prior. They reunite when Zoe is brought on as a jury consultant in Harvey's case, but ultimately, their relationship ends quickly as Zoe has to leave the state to take care of her niece. Zoe has since become a fan favorite of Harvey's girlfriends, though it's hard to rival Harvey and Donna's will-they-won't-they relationship on screen.

The O.C.'s self-awareness and meta-humor added to its appeal, but some harsh realities become apparent re-watching the show 20 years later. Marissa's death actually improved the show, as Ryan's relationship with Taylor felt more genuine and the comedy returned in season 4. The O.C.'s first season had a weak plot with the Oliver Trask storyline, and Seth and Summer's love story started off poorly.
While The O.C. might be a classic teen dramedy, re-watching the series twenty years later exposes a lot of hitherto-unseen cracks in its sunny veneer. The O.C. debuted in 2003. The teen soap soon won over viewers with the story of Ben McKenzie’s Ryan Atwood, a kid from the wrong side of the tracks who was adopted by the well-meaning, affluent Cohen family. Ryan gradually bonded with the family’s nerdy son Seth as the pair pursued relationships with the troubled girl-next-door Marissa Cooper and spoiled rich kid Summer.

"Jump the shark" refers to the moment when a show departs from its original premise and loses its appeal, even if the moment makes sense in-universe. Examples of shows jumping the shark include Fonzie's shark-jumping moment in Happy Days and Michael Scott leaving Dunder Mifflin in The Office. Shows like The O.C., Riverdale, and Prison Break also jumped the shark through outrageous or poorly-executed storylines, leading to a decline in quality.
While the term “jump the shark” has been overused in recent years, some shows truly earned the phrase in their worst moments. There are a lot of terms used by fandoms that can sometimes seem confusing or contradictory to casual viewers. For example, the term “Bottle episode” traditionally referred to cheaply produced outings that used a minimal number of cast members and pre-built sets to save on budgetary costs.

It's strange to think about now, but when the film industry started, movies did not have any sound. Filmmakers had to make do with live musical accompaniment and placards popping up on the screen at regular intervals to let the audience know about crucial plot points. Then came the "talkies" with music and dialogs included in the film, and suddenly moviemakers had a brand-new and highly effective means of telling their stories.
There are many audio elements to modern movies. There is the film score that plays over most of the movie, usually performed by an orchestra. Various dialogue and sound effects to give the visual storytelling a three-dimensional feel. And sometimes, a practice known as the Needle Drop, which we will be exploring in this article.

From 2010 to 2018, Adventure Time's best episodes have redefined the possibilities of animated storytelling. Across 10 seasons and 283 episodes, Finn, Jake, and the residents of the Land of Ooo have made a home in the hearts and minds of those who remember the cartoon fondly. Not surprisingly, Adventure Time has garnered 8 Primetime Emmys, a Peabody Award, 2 British Academy Children's Awards, and several other accolades for its many accomplishments.
Similar to its contemporaries on Cartoon Network such as Regular Show, Teen Titans Go!, and Steven Universe, Adventure Time juxtaposes cheerful, children's show visuals with humor, emotional stories, and overarching themes that remain deeply relatable to everyone from older kids to adults of all ages. Yet, even when compared to these classic Cartoon Network shows from the 2010s, Adventure Time remains unparalleled in terms of sheer originality, world-building, and relatability. Mr. Robot may have been off the air since 2019, but it has not ceased to be a subject of conversation among its faithful viewership. Created by Sam Esmail, Mr. Robot helped launch the career of Oscar winner Rami Malek, who played the series’ quotable protagonist Elliot. Although Mr. Robot season 4 largely brought the series to a satisfying conclusion, closure is finally approaching in regards to one important aspect of the show.
Since its first season, the moody and thrilling world of Mr. Robot has been brought to life with the help of composer Mac Quayle. Quayle is an Emmy-winning composer whose previous work includes Pose and many surprisingly connected seasons of American Horror Story. While Quayle’s work on Mr. Robot concluded years ago, a final collection of his music from season 4 is about to be released. Screen Rant is excited to premiere “409.4 Fsociety Resurfaces” from Mr. Robot Volume 8—Original Television Series Soundtrack.

The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) were the big winners at last night's Directors Guild of America's DGA Awards. The filmmaking duo took home the top prize, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, for "Everything Everywhere All At Once" — beating out directing legend Steven Spielberg ("The Fabelmans"), as well as Joseph Kosinski's massive aerial action film "Maverick," Todd Field's critical darling "Tár," and Martin McDonagh's black comedy "The Banshees of Inisherin."
These days, the Daniels seem to embody their hit film, being everything, everywhere, all at once. The Michelle Yeoh-led maximalist action-comedy has something for everyone, and is deeply, satisfyingly, weird. It topped many best-of lists (it was my #1 pick for Best Films of 2022) and is a favorite to take home the Academy Award for Best Picture. Now with a DGA Award under their belts, the odds of that happening are better than ever.

With less than a month to go before the Oscars, every award show counts. The next few weeks will see all of the major Hollywood guilds give out their annual awards, ensuring that each department gets its moment in the spotlight. Tonight, directors took center stage as Hollywood convened at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the Directors Guild of America Awards.
The ceremony honored outstanding achievement in both film and television directing, and the former category is often seen as predicting the Best Director winner at the Academy Awards. Four of the five Best Director nominees competed in the Feature Film category tonight: Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Todd Field (“TÁR”), and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). “Triangle of Sadness” director Ruben Östlund is not nominated, with “Top Gun: Maverick” helmer Joseph Kosinski taking his place.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have been named the best theatrical-film directors of 2022 for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” by the Directors Guild of America, which presented its 75th annual DGA Awards on Saturday night in Beverly Hills.
The two directors, who go by the name The Daniels, won for the freewheeling film, topping Steven Spielberg for “The Fabelmans,” Martin McDonagh for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Todd Field for “Tar” and Joseph Kosinski for “Top Gun: Maverick.” They are only the third directing team to win the DGA Award, after the Coen brothers for “No Country for Old Men” and Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins for “West Side Story.”
Spielberg, who is both the most-nominated and winningest film director in DGA history with 13 nominations and three wins, was the sentimental favorite going into the show, but “Everything Everywhere” has proven to be a surprisingly potent awards contender. The DGA win...

No stranger to playing not-so-upstanding knights in shining armor, Jaime Lannister himself, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, has boarded "Virtue," a medieval gothic horror movie that HanWay Films is taking to the European Film Market. Founded in 1999, HanWay is a British sales, distribution, and marketing company that's managed to get a pretty eclectic batch of films made over the years. Their output ranges from celebrated documentaries to Oscar-nominated period dramas to a bevy of auteur projects from the likes of David Cronenberg ("A Dangerous Method"), Takashi Miike ("13 Assassins"), Jim Jarmusch ("Only Lovers Left Alive"), and many more.
If that's not enough to get you sitting up and taking notice, know that "Virtue" further pairs Coster-Waldau with Romola Garai, the star of "Atonement," "Suffragette," and one of the best BBC series you've never seen, Abi Morgan's 1950s-set TV journalism drama "The Hour." In a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter), HanWay Films CEO Gabrielle Stewart notes that,...

Swipe through Hinge or Tinder, and chances are you’ll see Etta Marcus’s name. Not because the London singer is looking for someone to date, but because single people have started to cite a love of her music as a non-negotiable. “All I ask is that you: listen to Etta Marcus” reads one dating profile. “We’ll get along if: you like Etta Marcus” states another. But Marcus herself had no idea about this. “Are you serious?” she says, her blue eyes widening.
Despite only entering the industry two years ago, Marcus has gained a distinct “if you know, you know” cult-like fanbase, akin to that early Tumblr movement surrounding a young Lana Del Rey. Why? Well, she’s got the type of vocal that silences a bustling room, or that suddenly makes you aware that you’re swallowing. Her indigo tone slices the air like scissors through ribbon,...

Hilary and Anna Shakespeare’s first film, coming of age comedy Soundtrack to Sixteen, struck a chord with me. Of course it did; it was set right around the time I was a teenager, with characters who felt very much like myself and my friends at the time. Unfortunately, the cinema release coincided with the start of the first Covid lockdowns, and it still hasn’t been as widely seen as it should be. Two years later, the Shakespeare Sisters have returned to coming of age rom-com, this time with a modern set adaptation of a play by an illustrious namesake.

Toronto-based sales agent Syndicado Film Sales has acquired world rights to “Hide and Seek” (Nascondino), the debut feature from director Victoria Fiore, which will screen in the main Dox:award competition at the Copenhagen Intl. Documentary Film Festival (Cph:Dox).
The Naples-set documentary follows Entoni, a rambunctious 10-year-old, as he navigates childhood in a country where the justice system – in response to rising levels of youth criminality – allows courts to remove high-risk children from families involved in organized crime. Watching over him is his grandmother Dora, a former criminal who fears he is falling into the pattern she started and which Entoni’s imprisoned father has continued.
Produced over the course of four years, “Hide and Seek” tackles the brutality and chaos of these lives through a cinematic lens that blurs the line between truth and fiction, seamlessly blending true events, recollections and recreations.
Fiore described the film as a response...

The Copenhagen Intl. Documentary Film Festival (Cph:dox) has announced its full program, which includes some 200 new films and a whopping 76 world premieres.
A dozen documentaries are competing for the top prize in the main Dox:Award competition, a quarter of which were shot in Russia and Ukraine – a testimony to the organizers’ desire for the festival to reflect the times in which we live.
“A documentary film festival is not only a celebration of cinema, it is also an opportunity to critically reflect on reality, to engage in democratic dialogue and to discuss how our views of the world have consequences,” artistic director Niklas Engstrøm says. “Right now, our thoughts are first and foremost with the people in Ukraine, a sovereign European state unlawfully invaded by an autocratic regime. In Kyiv, the great festival Docudays UA was supposed to happen around the same time as Cph:dox. That is no longer possible.

Exclusive: Oliver Trevena has signed on to star alongside Aaron Eckhart and Nina Dobrev in the action-thriller, The Bricklayer, which is heading into production in Europe next month.
In the film from director Renny Harlin, based on the novel by Noah Boyd, someone is blackmailing the CIA by assassinating foreign journalists and making it look like the agency is responsible. As the world begins to unite against the U.S., the CIA must lure its most brilliant – and rebellious – operative out of retirement, forcing him to confront his checkered past while unraveling an international conspiracy.
Hanna Weg and Matt Johnson penned the script. G-Base’s Alan Siegel, Butler and Danielle Robinson are producing with Eclectic Pictures’ Heidi Jo Markel, and Millennium Media’s Jeffrey Greenstein, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger, Yariv Lerner and Rob Van Norden. Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson and Tanner Mobley from Millennium are serving as exec producers.

The band’s musical gatekeeper, the one most preoccupied with the TV-generated combo being allowed to write its own songs and play on its own records, Nesmith famously rejected “Sugar, Sugar” — a bubblegum pop song as basic as it gets, brought to them by producer Don Kirshner.
