Storyline

Nobody believes a liar - even when they're telling the truth. When a young woman is found murdered, a group of local high school students decide to further scare their classmates by spreading online rumors that a serial killer called "The Wolf" is on the loose. By describing "The Wolf's" next victims, the students' game is to see how many people they can convince - and if anyone will uncover the lie. But when the described victims actually do start turning up dead, suddenly no one knows where the lies end and the truth begins. As someone or something begins hunting the students themselves, the game turns terrifyingly real. Written by focus features

Surprisingly Entertaining
17 April 2006 | by christian123See all my reviews

A group of high school students hatch a plan to scare other students by creating a mock serial killer called "The Wolf" to see if anyone solves the lie, but soon, victims start showing up killed in the ways described in the game and then they themselves become prey to the killer.

It's obvious that Cry Wolf is pretty much a rip off of April Fool's Day but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie. Despite bad acting and an unoriginal story, Cry Wolf still offers up enough suspense and thrills to keep the viewer entertained. It's not really that scary of a movie but there are a few moments that could shock you and it does offer up a bunch of nice twists. Usually, a PG-13 horror film is done to make extra money yet the rating doesn't affect this film too much. It still gets the job done and it shows that a horror film doesn't have to be extremely gory or violent to be scary and entertaining. As mentioned above, the story is pretty unoriginal and some of the twists are predictable. I think they should have spent a little more time on the script because sometimes it felt like you had seen it all before.

For the most part, the acting is pretty bad. I know this isn't a surprise or anything but they could have casted some people that were at least going to try. The worst one is Julian Morris who plays the leading character Owen. His performance is so unconvincing and his accent is so annoying. Lindy Booth plays Dodger and she actually does a pretty good job. The only other actor to give a decent performance was Jared Padalecki. Bon Jovi also has a small role and he should stick to singing. He's not as bad as one would expect but he doesn't need to be appearing in low budget horror films either.

This film is not for everyone though. People who like their horror films bloody and violent should skip Cry Wolf since it contains none of that. Also, there isn't really one likable character so it's kind of hard to like these people and feel sorry for them. The ending is pretty good and not completely predictable. You will probably figure out who the killer is early on but the motive is not as obvious. After seeing so many bad horror films from 2005, its nice to see one that actually entertains. In the end, some may find this film too generic but I thought it was a nice, little horror film. A fun way to spend 90 minutes. Rating 7/10
