How far down can one go in life? How deep is the bottom - the point at which the only direction to go is up? And, what can get you there? This deeply introspective Canadian film, Red Rover, brings these questions to the forefront. The film opens with a musical countdown, if you will, while the opening credits run. In a 75 second montage we're introduced to Damon Pierce, the film's underdog protagonist. He's played by Kristian Bruun (Orphan Black and The Murdoch Mysteries) in a wondrously understated performance. We see Damon walking the beach with a metal detector, sitting dejectedly in his office cubicle and finally going to bed, on a couch, in an extremely cramped space with a palpable depression evident on his face. He turns the tiny lamp out... and Title.
We join him at work. His boring...

It looks like The Artful Detective TV show will be renewed for season 12 on Ovation TV, with a start date Tbd. Back home in Canada, the series goes by the title The Murdoch Mysteries, on CBC, where the season 11 finale just aired, last week. Now, showrunner Peter Mitchell, writer Mary Pederson, and star Hélène Joy are already teasing the 12th installment. An Ovation Victorian mystery drama, The Artful Detective stars Yannick Bisson, Hélène Joy, Jonny Harris, Thomas Craig, Lachlan Murdoch, Georgina Reilly, Kristian Bruun, Arwen Humphreys, and Mouna Traoré. The Canadian mystery drama centers on William Murdoch (Bisson) — a good-looking, innovative Toronto detective. Murdoch uses fingerprinting, Uv Light, and trace evidence in his investigations. Working alongside him to crack the city’s grizzliest murders are pathologist Dr. Julia Ogden (Joy) and Constable George Crabtree (Harris) — Murdoch’s righthand man.

Monroe. Acorn Media DVD
Hot on the heels of the release of the critically acclaimed Time Team DVD, the good folks at Acorn Media have unearthed some more gems to close out the month of May. On 29 May, British TV fans stateside can get their hands on ITV’s medical drama Monroe. The title character is a neurosurgeon who is kind of like Sherlock Holmes in scrubs. Brilliantly clever, sharp tongued, intolerant of fools but someone who is ultimately concerned with making a meaningful and positive contribution to society.
Norther Irish actor James Nesbitt takes on the role of Monroe. American viewers may remember him as the lead man in the BBC America drama Jekyll. In the UK he is perhaps even better known for his starring role in the Iraq war drama Occupation. Nesbitt is ideally suited to this role. He is charismatic in a quirky sort of way...

Syfy reports they will spin-off a new TV series from their Toronto-lensed 'dramedy', "Warehouse 13", scripted by "Warehouse" writers Jack Kenny and Bob Goodman.
The show will focus on the "Warehouse" character 'H.G. Wells', played by Jaime Murray ("Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena"), set in an 1890's 'steampunk' environment, where she uses her knowledge of contemporary science to solve crimes and mysteries.
Toronto seems best suited for the 19th century setting, that has been used to great effect for "The Murdoch Mysteries" and ABC's upcoming TV pilot "Poe".
"Warehouse 13" is noted as the most watched original series in Syfy history with an average of 3.4 million viewers last season.
The show returns for a third season, July 11, 2011.

This week: Actors who got their start playing gay, period films, and jokes about gay Republicans. Plus, “Ugly Betty” hottie Christopher Gorham speaks!
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: Remember the old expression that after a nuclear holocaust, the only thing living will be cockroaches and Cher? I think we can also add Ugly Betty hottie Christopher Gorham (“Henry”) to their ranks. How many series has been in now? – Blue, Milwaukee, Mi
A: By my count, at least eight: Popular, Odyssey 5, Jake 2.0, Medical Investigation, Ugly Betty, Harper’s Island, and a new show, Covert Affairs, running right now on the USA Network. And this doesn’t include his multiple-episode gigs on Party of Five and Felicity.
What the secret to his success? He doesn’t have a clue, but he is...

Wild Wild North could be another moniker for this genre bending Canadian television show. Inspector Murdoch does lack the actor bluster of Artemis Gordon, but Yannick Bisson might fit into Robert Conrad.s tight pants. Elementary, my dear Murdoch. In 1895 Toronto, Detective William Murdoch (Yannik Bisson) solves crimes. This might not be abnormal but his methods of detection are out of the ordinary. He uses crime scene investigation and techniques that we.re used to seeing like fingerprinting. He.s joined in his investigations by coroner Dr. Julia Ogden (Helene Joy), constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris), and they.re lorded over by the blustery Inspector Brackenried (Thomas Craig), who is head of the stationhouse. The Murdoch Mysteries are based...
