- After a Geisha was Stripped of her clothes it is then implied that she was Sexually Assaulted by the same man, but nothing is shown only implied.
- A woman reaches under another woman's kimono to see if she had a sexual encounter. She pulls her hand out then slaps the other woman, affirming her suspicions
- It is implied a woman's sister became a prostitute
- A quick scene of a geisha having sex with her boyfriend (only a few thrusts are shown with him on top and a blanket covering them).
- The theme of selling yourself for entertainment is mature even though Geisha traditionally did not engage in sexual congress with their clients. Doing so was below their dignity and left to common prostitutes. A woman loses her virginity which the person has been bidding for.
- A young geisha is gradually stripped of her clothes once being forcefully kissed. Her bare back is seen.
- A geisha suspected of having sex is handled roughly by another woman, implying non-consensual touching.
- A geisha has sex with the American Army Colonel, but nothing is shown except for her bare shoulders.
- The geisha are seen in a natural hot springs pool with other men, you cannot see full nudity, only the shoulders and just above the women's chest.
Violence & Gore

- We see geisha use charcoal to darken their eyebrows and use hot wax to comb their hair. A woman shows painful expressions when this happens to her. The voiceover talks about how beauty and pain go side by side, how fingers will bleed, and how sleeping will be painful
- A stream is flowing with red, and with the narration about death and war it looked like blood. A few seconds later is revealed to be red dye, and kimono makers were using the steam to rinse the excess dye
- A young girl has cold water thrown over her and is whipped for a crime she did not commit.
- Following the above rough handling scene, the old woman slaps the geisha.
- A young girl falls off a roof (nothing is really seen, it skips to her being treated by a doctor)
- A man breaks a glass with his hand, blood is very briefly shown.
- A lady draws a small line on a geisha's legs and gives her a knife and tells her to cut her legs where she marked it. The geisha does and yells in pain, even though it doesn't show anything.

- Characters frequently drink sake and beer.
- Character's are seen smoking or lighting cigarettes for their male customers. Mother/Okasa is frequently seen with cigarette in it's holder, and discusses the selling/bartering over boxes of 'Lucky Strikes' cigarettes over the phone. After the war a cigarette machine/dispenser is seen at a previous tea house.
Frightening & Intense Scenes

- The gloominess during the war scene can be emotional
- The film can also be emotionally intense, as it's essentially a story about a girl being sold by her family against her will to live a brutally unfair life as a Geisha.
- Two sisters, Chiyo and Satsu, are forcefully taken from their parents. The former is sold into a Geisha house and the latter is sold into a prostitution brothel, never to see each other again.

- A young girl is seen being washed up by a woman, her bare back, legs and feet are shown. Then other women walk in to dress her.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
- Hatsumomo, in a drunken rage, fights with Sayuri in the okiya and knocks over a lantern, setting the place ablaze. She intentionally adds to the fire by breaking more lanterns and nearly burning the place down. The okiya is saved, but she is banished from it, her fate unknown.
