Steven Spielberg has had a lifelong fascination with alien beings from beyond the stars. When the legendary director was just 17, he made a nearly two-and-a-half-hour epic on his 8mm camera called Firelight, a film that he more or less remade 14 years later as Close Encounters of the Third Kind. That 1977 classic would be the first of three professional movies Spielberg would make about aliens arriving on our planet, the other two being E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and War of the Worlds (2005). And each trip into the extraterrestrial has led to one of the director’s most successful and acclaimed films (we’re not counting 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull since Spielberg didn’t actually want aliens in the movie).

On Monday April 22, 20th Century Studios’ all-new action-adventure spectacle, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, made a trip to Venice Beach to get some sun, catch some waves and promote the film to onlookers lucky enough to be there. The apes on horseback was a clever idea and looked very reminiscent of the original 1968 film Planet Of The Apes.
The film opens in movie theaters globally on May 10, 2024, and will be available in IMAX®, Dolby Cinema®, 4Dx, and premium screens everywhere. Be among the first to see Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on the big screen at the early access screening on May 8th.

Steven Spielberg is one maverick director among his contemporaries who has mastered every genre in the cinema handbook. The director has made intense thrillers, sci-fi dramas, historical/war epics, and comedies. Spielberg can do no wrong and as an ardent lover of cinema, he has no plans of slowing down.
Henry Thomas in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
His sci-fi flicks such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and A.I. Artificial Intelligence have been celebrated as some of the best entries in the genre. According to new reports, he is heading back to that genre yet again with his new film, and the recently released Dune: Part Two may have had a hand in Spielberg developing that itch.

Veteran director Steven Spielberg’s follow-up to The Fabelmans will be a return to a subject that the filmmaker has history with: UFOs.
Since the release of The Fabelmans at the beginning of 2023, Steven Spielberg hasn’t announced his next project. As is always the case, we know the filmmaker has things cooking away: there’s the remake of Bullitt that looked to be in pole position to be the director’s next film to go in front of cameras. There’s also the Cape Fear TV series for Apple that he’s setting up with Martin Scorsese, not to mention the Ready Player One sequel that he will be stepping back from but still producing.
However, we didn’t know what Spielberg’s next directorial project until now. Variety is claiming that the veteran filmmaker’s next move is to ‘likely make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea.

It’s been a while since Steven Spielberg has dabbled in the world of extra-terrestrials, but according to a report from Variety, the acclaimed director is working on a UFO movie which will likely be his next project.
Sources told Variety that the UFO movie is based on Steven Spielberg’s own original idea and that David Koepp is writing the screenplay. Unfortunately, that’s all the information we have at this point, but a UFO movie from the man who gave us Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is hard to ignore. Koepp has penned a handful of Spielberg movies, including Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Steven Spielberg is one of the most influential and celebrated directors of all time. He helped define the blockbuster, established the look and feel of '80s genre fare, and gave us the best (and possibly only well-shot) big-budget studio musical of the last decade. But despite getting his start in science fiction, Spielberg has mostly distanced himself from the genre in the past decade or so.
Still, Spielberg has remained an ardent fan of the genre, praising recent gems such as "Godzilla Minus One" and proclaiming his fandom for Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two." Perhaps this has rekindled a passion for sci-fi in 77-year-old Spielberg, seeing as he's now getting ready to return to one of his favorite subjects — aliens.
According to Variety, Spielberg is likely going to "make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea." David Koepp is writing the screenplay, according to the outlet's sources.

Fresh off baring his soul and telling his own life story in the Oscar-nominated movie The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg is reportedly headed back into the world of extraterrestrials!
Variety notes in a report this week that Spielberg will “likely make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea,” set to be written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park).
Interesting to note, Koepp is himself returning to his early roots with the next installment in the Jurassic World franchise. He’ll be writing next year’s untitled new installment.
Steven Spielberg is of course no stranger to extraterrestrial encounters, directing two of the greatest alien movies of all time: Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977 and E.T. in 1982. It’s an arena he returned to in 2005, directing an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds.

Remakes have become rampant in the film industry but the worst part is most of them lack any sense of originality. Filmmakers are constantly coming up with movies that rely solely on the nostalgia factor in order to bring the audience to the theatres. More often than not, the remakes aren’t met with positive feedback which just goes on to say that it is about time Hollywood should move on to bigger and better things.

However, before it does so, the film industry might need to take a step back and look into two of the best remakes Hollywood has had to offer in the past years – War of the Worlds and West Side Story. Directed by none other than legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, both films are perfect examples of how a remake should be done.

Dakota Fanning has revealed the one date every year that Tom Cruise never forgets: her birthday!
During a recent interview for Harper’s Bazaar with her Ripley co-star Andrew Scott, the actress shared that she got her first mobile phone as a gift from the Top Gun: Maverick star.
After Scott guessed the correct answer to “Who gave Dakota her first cellphone?” saying, “Ok, well it’s going to be some Hollywood icon … Tom Cruise,” Fanning confirmed that the actor gifted her a Motorola Razr for her 11th birthday while they were filming 2005’s War of the Worlds together.
“Oh, my God, I was so excited,” the Twilight actress recalled, before noting that she “didn’t have anybody to call or text at that time,” so she wasn’t exactly sure how useful the present was for her.
“You know, I was 11,” she quipped. “But I loved having it. I loved it.

It turns out that Morgan Freeman’s first big break in show business was just kid’s stuff. After working in a few unmemorable productions, Freeman caught on with PBS’s The Electric Company, a show from the Children’s Television Workshop designed to teach basic reading skills to kids from 7 to 10 years old. The gig ran for six seasons and 780 episodes.
He next grabbed attention in 1980 with performances in Brubaker with Robert Redford and TV movie Attica, he broke out in Street Smart, which earned him the first of five Academy Award nominations. Freeman received Best Actor nominations for Oscar-winning Driving Miss Daisy (1989) and The Shawshank Redemption (1994) before winning for his Best Supporting Actor role in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby (2004). We look ahead to Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic City, what it might be like, and how it connects to his very earliest work.
In the press tour for his 2023 sci-fi film The Creator, British director Gareth Edwards suggested that, after the bruising experiences of making 2014’s Godzilla and in particular 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, he wouldn’t rush to go back to studio filmmaking again.
Suggesting that both of those films had started production without finalised scripts, Edwards said as recently as January that “I have to concentrate on personal and original projects.”
This stance appeared to change rather abruptly just one month later, when Universal approached Edwards with the offer to direct the next Jurassic Park (or Jurassic World) sequel. Original director David Leitch had dropped out, and with the film’s production racing to meet a self-set 2025 release date, Universal Pictures needed a replacement in a...

The poster for No Way Up says that it’s from the executive producers of the 47 Meters Down series. That’s not a good sign because it means it’s from the money men behind those films, not the writers, directors or any of the creative types. This time around, they’ve decided to offer their finny cash cows an all-you-can-eat buffet and, taking a cue from Airport 77, they’ve crashed an airliner into the Pacific. That leaves the survivors trapped on the ocean floor in a rapidly shrinking air pocket and surrounded by sharks.
As No Way Up starts things are already looking bad for Jed and Kyle. Kyle’s date for their trip to Cabo backed out at the last minute.

Amanda Garcia is known for not holding back on her opinions on The Challenge, and she continued that trend with remarks about several castmates during a docuseries based on the show.
She’s brought the drama on multiple seasons of The Challenge, including arguments with Michele Fitzgerald and Tori Deal on the CBS spinoff USA 2.
During her recent episode of The Challenge: Home Turf, Amanda, the former Are You The One? star, discussed several individuals she’s been on The Challenge with.
Among them was her former teammate from the War of the Worlds season, Josh Martinez.
Amanda commented on her role in helping the Big Brother winner become a star on the reality TV competition series.
In addition, she brought up several castmates who were rivals that she indicated she “forgot existed.”

Anonymous Content and Spain’s Morena Films, behind box office breakouts “Cell 211” and Champions, have named former Studiocanal executive Beatriz Campos as the managing director of their Spain-based film-tv production venture Anonymous Content España.
Campos will oversee the company’s day-to-day operations working closely with David Davoli, Anonymous Content’s president of international, and Morena Films CEO Pilar Benito, Anonymous Content and Morena Films announced Monday. Launched in May 2023, Anonymous Content España aims to develop and produce premium Spanish projects for a global market.
That is easily said, but several factors work in its favor and will be aided now by Campos’ appointment. As film and TV producers still battle a hugely competitive market and spiralling production costs, companies are reaching out for partners beyond national markets, a structure embodied in Anonymous Content España. Anonymous can also help Morena access U.S.-stars, which may allow their productions to stand out in the crowd.

After its initial reveal last year, developer Deklazon had dropped a new story trailer for their upcoming alien abduction title They Are Here: Alien Abduction Horror. The trailer focuses on journalist Taylor Fox, who is investigating an alien abduction involving the Sherman family at Grayswood Farm, and the consequences of him looking a little too far into someone’s business.
Wearing its obvious inspiration from The X-Files on its sleeve, They Are Here also draws from films like Signs, Dark Skies, The Gracefield Incident, War of the Worlds and others. The game follows journalist Taylor Fox, who is contacted by a farmer named Peter Sherman, who tells Fox about terrifying, inexplicable phenomena occurring on his farm. Fox heads over to investigate, but finds the home deserted. The animals on the Sherman farm are sick, infected by some parasite. From a note, Fox learns that the farmer’s daughter Megan had disappeared.

Earlier this week, we caught word that Universal Pictures is moving forward with a new entry in the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World franchise – which is no surprise, since the Jurassics and Fast & Furious are the studio’s two big moneymakers. What’s interesting about this new sequel is the fact that the screenplay is being written by David Koepp, who previously wrote the original Jurassic Park and its follow-up The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Now paleontologist and evolutionary biologist Steve Brusatte has taken to social media to confirm that the project is moving forward – and he knows, because it’s so far along that he has already signed on to be the dinosaur expert consultant on it. That’s a job Brusatte also had on the previous movie, Jurassic World Dominion, where he was consultant alongside paleontologist Jack Horner, who has been a consultant on all six Jurassic movies to date.

Stephen Bear has shared his first update since getting an early release from prison, serving just 11 months of a 21-month sentence.
Bear served time for his conviction for voyeurism, disclosing private, sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress, and harassment without violence.
The former Challenge competitor surfaced in a new video featuring a shot of him jogging outdoors into the video frame.
Bear stops and begins throwing punches in the air before he winks and flexes for the camera.
Music plays over the scene with a sound bite from part of Tom Hardy’s film Legend, which tells the story of twin gangsters Ronald and Reginald Kray wreaking havoc on London in the 1960s.
“It’s not how hard you can hit, it’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forword…,” Bear’s video caption said, a nod to Sylvester Stallone’s line from the movie Rocky.

The writer of the original Jurassic Park is headed back to the world of dinosaurs, with THR reporting that David Koepp is writing the next installment of the Jurassic World franchise.
Koepp also wrote The Lost World: Jurassic Park II for Steven Spielberg, along with notable films including Carlito’s Way, Mission: Impossible, Stir of Echoes, and War of the Worlds.
THR notes, “The project, which has been flying under the radar, is far enough along, and the script in a well-liked shape, that the studio is whispering of a possible 2025 release date.”
The site also reveals that this next installment in the Jurassic World saga will take us into “a new Jurassic era,” with a brand new storyline and potentially all new characters.

Universal’s dinosaurs are far from extinct.
A new movie in the “Jurassic World” franchise is currently in development at the studio, with David Koepp — who adapted the 1993 original “Jurassic World” and its 1997 sequel “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” from Michael Crichton’s bestselling novels — set to write the screenplay. The project will have an all-new storyline that is intended to launch a new era for the franchise, though it’s uncertain whether any of previous stars, including Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, would return.
“Jurassic” mainstay Frank Marshall is coming back to produce, along with his regular producing partner Patrick Crowley. Steven Spielberg is executive producing through his company Amblin Entertainment. No director is attached yet.

It's fascinating to look back and track shifts in the media landscape in response to the real world. One need only compare director Roland Emmerich's "Independence Day" -- a whiz-bang 1990s blockbuster where A-listers crack wise while battling aliens hell-bent on conquering Earth -- with director Steven Spielberg's grave and distressing post-9/11 take on "War of the Worlds" to see how a major historical event can result in two drastically different variations on the same genre template released less than 10 years apart.
In point of fact, by the time "Bones" premiered its 12th and final season on Fox in 2017, cultural attitudes had evolved dramatically from what they were at the start of the show's run in 2005. When Hart Hanson's procedural got going, the U.S. was only a few years into its joint invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, with memories of the September 11 terrorist attacks still very much fresh on everybody's minds.

A new restoration of the 1959 horror film on Blu-ray and DVD, and making its UK digital debut, Horrors Of The Black Museum, starring Michael Gough and directed by Arthur Crabtree (Fiend Without a Face), marked the first film in the “Sadian Trilogy”, followed by the Hammer favourite Circus of Horrors and Michael Powell’s infamous Peeping Tom – introducing cinema audiences to a more shocking and salacious brand of onscreen horror.
A series of grisly, macabre murders sweep London and leave Scotland Yard completely baffled. Bancroft, an evil crime journalist, is hypnotising his assistant to commit murders using items curated in his own personal “Black Museum” – inspired by the infamous real-life collection of weapons and torture instruments used by criminals. Directed by Claudio Fäh (Northmen: A Viking Saga) from a screenplay by Andy Mayson, No Way Up is a high concept combination of disaster movie and survival thriller, as characters from very different backgrounds are thrown together when the plane they’re travelling on crashes into the Pacific Ocean. With their air supply rapidly running out, a nightmare fight for survival ensues as dangers from all sides hone-in on them.

“World’s Largest Metaphor Hits Ice-Berg,” read the The Onion headline. Agreed. As Kate Winslet’s own Freud-referencing Rose Dewitt Bukater snips, James Cameron’s Titanic is epic cinema’s grandest erection, and when the near-scale model set of the towering hulk of steel that was, at the time, the largest ship in the world severs down the middle, it then becomes the most vulgar representation of castration to ever cause millions of heartwarmed teenage girls to choke sobs into their fists. It’s a ready-made sarcophagus for everything that’s vulgar in mainstream cinema. Titanic both embodies and validates the excess that is its own subject.
And Titanic is arguably the most artlessly touching disaster movie of all. No, really. Time and a number of equally irony-free blockbusters in the interim (including Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds and Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings...

Almost seven years to the day since it began, we’re about to give a royal wave of farewell to Netflix drama The Crown, but series six might be its most eye-opening yet, as its first part (out on November 16) deals with the events surrounding the tragic death of Princess Diana.
Some critics’ hackles might be up already after the show previously attracted condemnation for historical inaccuracies, so it will be especially interesting to see how the show covers such an emotive and important event in royal history, and just where the story ends when the final episodes are released on 14th December.
Even so, many fans will be disappointed not to see more recent events get The Crown treatment, like that Prince Andrew interview and Harry and Meghan’s very public royal uncoupling, but is it so far beyond the realms of possibility that the show might have a...

The 2000s was a strange time for genre filmmaking and especially science fiction. While sci-fi cinema was in theory thriving, that was mainly thanks to the presence of franchises that were, in fact, their own mini-genres (like Star Wars and Star Trek). Then there were superhero films, always sort of a cousin to sci-fi, with the X-Men and Spider-Man series both exploding and the Marvel Cinematic Universe making its debut with Iron Man (2008) just as the decade came to a close.
But there were some top-shelf literary adaptations as well. Steven Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) was a flawed yet powerful expansion of a Brian Aldiss story while his War of the Worlds (2005) and Minority Report (2002) were outstanding takes on classic tales from H.G. Wells and Philip K. Dick (there might have been no sci-fi filmmaker more consistent at the time than The Beard). Other remakes or adaptations,...

Before there were dramas on television, there were dramas on the radio. With no visuals to present to their audience, radio series had to conjure up entire worlds out of carefully scripted narration, homespun special effects, and the sheer vibrance of their actors’ voices. Done right, whether back then or in modern podcast fiction, the effect can be magical, with the soundscape creating an experience that can be just as immersive as, if not more than, a story you watch on a screen. Heck, in 1938, Orson Welles nearly caused a...

The film came out in 2021, and saw Washington playing a detective hunting a serial killer in the 90s. The project ended up being directed by John Lee Hancock, but the film initially arrived on Spielberg’s desk.
The film’s script had been floating around for years. According to Hancock, by the time the story found its way to Spielberg, he had his fill of dark material.

Stuart Ford’s AGC Television has boarded the series adaptation of F.G. Haghenbeck’s novel, ‘Primavera del Mal’ (‘The Spring of Evil’) alongside Mexican-American filmmaker Fernando Lebrija of Cielo Content and Irreversible Pictures.
To be retitled “Amapola,” the upcoming historical drama series is set in the early 20th century when the Chinese held sway over the drug trade along the Mexican-u.S. border.
In the world of illicit trade, adopted siblings Raul Duval and Miguel Ying have successfully grown their family’s opium enterprise. Their ambitions now extend beyond mere cultivation as they seek to broaden their reach and increase their political influence. However, their aspirations take an unexpected turn when American mobster Bugsy Siegel arrives in Mexico City, offering them a golden opportunity.
Situated strategically between Nogales, Mexico, and Tucson, Arizona, the Ying family steers their course through the treacherous waters of the drug trade bridging Mexico and the U.

There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!
Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).
Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.
