- A gay man has to prove he is straight to get his inheritance. This isn't easy when he has to get married.
- Going Straight - Plot Synopsis
Would you try to change your sexual orientation for 50 million dollars?
Not that difficult say the Fundamentalists. They claim all you need is to have faith and Poof! (maybe not the best word choice) you are a different orientation!
Of course, if this were true, all men would go gay, because, as everyone knows, gay men have far more fun than straight men.
With these thought in mind, Aaron Fairlane (Peter Ross Stephens) attempts a change from being gay to going straight at least as long as it takes to inherit 50 mil from his dear departed uncle. This attempt includes convincing Wendy Wilson (Hallie Shepherd), his childhood sweetheart, to marry him. He has, unfortunately, very little practice wooing women.
Should he fail to marry, the money gets donated to the Christian Coalition Against Homosexuality, an aggressive, mean-spirited, mostly male group with spies, and goals that include eliminating anyone who has more fun than straight men.
Wendy wanted to have a sexual relationship with Aaron when they were going steady a total of three years of virginity. However, their relationship came to an abrupt end when Aaron said he was in love with her brother, Brad (Ryan Lympus).
The estate lawyer (Robert Heath) tells Aaron there is another requirement to the inheritance. The Coalition has the right to visit Aarons home at any time to make sure he is straight. If they find anything queer, they, not Aaron, get the 50 big ones.
Pretending to be straight, Aaron screws up his relationships with his gay friends. Ramsey (Ivan Dinh) and Todd (Jason Seitz), are appalled and see him running from the truth about himself. To complicate things, Ramsey learns that Todd is accepting money from the Coalition to spy on Aaron.
Ramsey recounts Aarons history: Aarons parents died young and his uncle raised him like a son. When Aaron came out, his uncle publicly disowned him, and threw him in the street. Aaron asked for help so he could finish high school, but his uncle denied he was even his nephew. This resulted in Aaron living in the street and in shelters for three years.
It is likely that his uncle never intended him to get the inheritance. Requiring the Coalition to verify the stipulations made sure it was unobtainable. It appears to be his uncles last rage at Aaron for being the only heir, and pruning the family tree a bit too closely.
While looking at a store window wedding display, Aaron has a chance meeting with Max (Zane Gregory). They talk about marriage and divorce, with Aaron being evasive and unsure about his pending marriage. Max reads his beads and says: All I was saying is be who you are. Thats all.
Because Aaron keeps lying about himself and pursuing the inheritance, all of his friends give up on him, and, at the same time, Wendy, his betrothed beloved, has an affair with another man, Troy (Eric Colley).
Comes the day of the big, fat, wedding, and everyone is present. This includes the estate lawyer, the Coalition lawyer (John Kobasic) and spies, everyones friends and former friends.
Aaron, still unable to commit to being straight or gay, fumbles his commitment to Wendy. Seething with pain and humiliation, Wendy leaps from the stairway and breaks her leg.
Because Troy worked for the Coalition, his attempts to break up the pending marriage constituted a breach of the inheritance stipulations, which dumps all the 50 mil plus a 10 mil penalty into Aarons eagerly awaiting arms.
Still ambiguous about his affiliations, Aaron moves in with Todd. Wendy eventually marries Troy.
