Have you ever wished that your favorite fictional character could actually exist and save the day? Well, for actor Alex Pettyfer, that wish seems to have been granted when his co-star, Henry Cavill, famously known as Superman, prevented him from “falling off a boat”. This near-death incident occurred on the set of their next film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which will hit theaters next month.
Although Cavill is sadly no longer DC’s Man of Steel due to James Gunn’s takeover, it appears that the British actor, 40, has adopted Superman’s valiant traits in real life. The upcoming Guy Ritchie film, based on Damien Lewis’s book of the same name, chronicles the experiences of the British organization (Special Operations Executive) during World War II.

Gerwig's Narnia reboot offers a fresh, lighter take on fantasy compared to recent dark, adult-oriented shows like The Witcher. Her adaptations promise to retain the magic and depth of C.S. Lewis's novels while appealing to both younger and adult audiences. Despite previous Narnia film letdowns, Gerwig's talent and vision could bring a new, exciting chapter to the fantasy genre.
Greta Gerwig's Chronicles of Narnia reboot for Netflix could be a refreshing change of pace for the fantasy genre compared to what has been released in the past ten years. The 21st century has already seen two considerable waves of fantasy adaptations. Movies in the 2000s tried to mimic the success of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films and the Harry Potter series, leading to the previous Narnia adaptations and other films like Eragon, Stardust, and The Golden Compass.

Warning! This post includes Spoilers for The Bad Batch season 3
Jyn Erso references "Mark Omega" in Rogue One, potentially connecting to The Bad Batch season 3. Rogue One's Imperial projects and plans could be linked to the Empire's hunt for Omega in the animated series. The Bad Batch has already explained Project War-Mantle, suggesting more connections could potentially come.
A key line from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may have helped set up the events of The Bad Batch season 3 almost eight years ago. As seen in the 2016 Star Wars movie from director Gareth Edwards, Rogue One reveals the story of the Rebels who stole the Death Star plans and got them to Princess Leia Organa ahead of 1977's A New Hope. To that end, the scene where the plans were actually obtained may carry an important connection to The Bad Batch and its final season currently streaming on Disney+.

Henry Cavill recently portrayed the character of Argylle in filmmaker Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle. The spy-action comedy movie was written by Jason Fuchs and had an ensemble cast of Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, and more.
Upon its premiere, the movie opened up to negative reviews from critics and audiences. Argylle follows a spy novelist who finds herself in the middle of a murder and espionage after she realizes that her new spy novel mirrors real-world events. Despite the movie receiving negative comments and tanking at the box office, Henry Cavill’s net worth does not seem to be hindered.

Daniel Craig is an unquestionably charismatic actor, demonstrating remarkable acting prowess since his career’s inception with Casino Royale. His James Bond movies, in particular, have achieved widespread success, with Craig leaving an indelible mark on the franchise. He redefined James Bond with his charming and charismatic action sequences and performances. With him out of the picture now, it appears Michael Caine has one specific Marvel star in mind to portray James Bond.

Daniel Craig starred in five films as part of the James Bond franchise over the years. Beginning with Casino Royale in 2006, he continued with Quantum of Solace in 2008, followed by Skyfall in 2012, Spectre in 2015, and concluding his run with No Time to Die in 2021.

"Argylle" has received negative reviews and is underperforming at the box office, falling far short of its reported $250 million production budget. The movie's overstuffed ensemble cast is criticized for prioritizing marketing over developing proper characters for the stars. The complicated plot of "Argylle," which involves fictional and real-world characters, received criticism for having too many twists and confusing audiences about the real universe of the story.
As the movie continues to struggle at the box office, Screen Rant's own Pitch Meeting series has set its sights on Argylle. It's been a good two years since Daniel Craig's swan song as James Bond, "No Time to Die" and its divisive ending debuted in theaters. But even before Craig's finale arrived, rumors continued to swirl that Henry Cavill was still in the running to take on the role following Craig's retirement. The "Man of Steel" actor had almost clinched the role back in the early 2000s when longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson were casting for 2006's "Casino Royale." Unfortunately for Cavill, he just lost out to Craig -- who reinvigorated the franchise with a fresh take on England's greatest spy.
Cavill has since remained a favorite to play Bond, despite the fact that he's now 40 and would have been in his early 20s the last time he came close to being cast. He's even spoken openly about what he would have done in the role,...

British filmmaker Matthew Vaughn’s helmed a gonzo fantasy with a cross-dressing Robert De Niro, a vigilante superhero flick with a foul-mouthed, killer kid, and a delirious spin on Bond with Colin Firth. But Argylle, his $200 million globe-trotting espionage thriller, has proven to be his most divisive film yet.

When I think about Matthew Vaughn's directing career, the image that primarily comes to mind is that of a provocateur, a filmmaker who enjoys prodding his audience a little while bucking familiar conventions. He famously did that with "Kick-Ass" in 2010, doubled down on provocation with the "Kingsman" movies, and is poised to do it again with his latest spy film, "Argylle," which hits theaters today. He seems to prefer entering through the side door rather than taking a head-on approach, opting for more unorthodox methods of storytelling wherever possible.
But that wasn't always the case. 2007's "Stardust," Vaughn's second directorial feature, does not have the cultural reputation as some of his other films, but upon rewatch, it was surprising to see Vaughn operating in a more straightforward zone -- one that doesn't seem as desperate to push the envelope and is confident enough in the nuts and bolts...

Matthew Vaughn has revealed just how close Henry Cavill got to playing 007 in a new interview. More below.

By now, it’s pretty common knowledge that the Man Of Steel and The Witcher star was officially in the conversation for who should replace Piers Brosnan back in the 2000s. Until now, though, it’s never been entirely clear how close he got.

Filmmaker Matthew Vaughn has only really inhabited two different universes in the wake of his 2007 feature Stardust. The first was his 2010 motion picture Kick-Ass, while the other is his Kingsman universe, which has spawned a trio of motion pictures taking place over an entire century of European history. The 2024 title Argylle sees Vaughn stepping outside of those two confines for almost the first time in nearly 20 years — emphasis on almost. Between Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service, Vaughn did step into the X-Men universe with X-Men: First Class.

What looks like diamonds but on closer inspection turns out to be little more than reams of cheap polyester? Why, argyle, of course — that preppy pattern found on socks and sweaters, and an apt name for the latest kooky spy caper from Matthew Vaughn. The erstwhile “Kick-Ass” director has been trapped in “Kingsman” mode for so long (going on a decade now) that it feels like we’ve lost him to that kind of live-action cartoon forever, cramming Gen Z James Bond riffs with disco music and outrageous greenscreen shenanigans.
“Argylle” boasts an entirely new set of characters, but sticks to Vaughn’s CG-exaggerated aesthetic as hacky spy novelist Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) gets pulled into a scheme nearly identical to the one she described in her bestselling series of books. She invented a character called Agent Argylle who’s uncovered a secret division of rogue agents, creatively named the Division.

Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas" turns 34 this year. The movie itself spans more than three decades, chronicling Henry Hill's (Ray Liotta) life as an associate in the New York mob — Hill's life story was first told to the public by the nonfiction book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the "Goodfellas" script with Scorsese.
"Goodfellas" is a cinematic shot of adrenaline, cut with vivacious energy by Thelma Schoonmaker and scored with classic rock to reflect the anti-authority glamour of mid-20th century gangsters. No matter if you watch it in all its sprawling glory or just sample clips, it's enjoyable — nay, irresistible.
Since "Goodfellas" packs so many years into two-and-a-half hours, it has a huge cast. So much time has passed since "Goodfellas" premiered in theaters and left its mark on crime cinema that not all of these actors are still with us. Miraculously, though, quite a few of them...

Magic can be explored in various genres, from heist films like "Now You See Me" to fantasy adventures like "Willow." "Hocus Pocus" and "Stardust" offer family-friendly and colorful magical experiences, while "The Craft" delves into the dark consequences of spell-casting. "The Witch" is a disturbing and acclaimed film that showcases the horror side of magic, making it a must-watch for horror fans.
Magic comes in many forms and the best movies about magic explore them all. Magic, sorcery, and illusion pop up most often in fairy tales and family movies, but that's not necessarily always the case. Films broaching these subjects rarely indeed attain more than a PG-13 rating, but magic pertains to much more than just Mary Poppins. From the awe of Studio Ghibli productions to the sinister wonder of Pan's Labyrinth, magic is a broad concept that can open quite a few creative avenues. Whether they're set in...

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to balance high stakes, conflict, and healthy romantic relationships in movies. Toxic couples who fight all the time and break up and then get back together can be exciting in a movie, but there's something special about mature, functional relationships. Healthy couples respect each other's autonomy, communicate effectively, and appreciate each person's unique qualities.
A romance doesn't have to be boring to be mature and refreshingly kind. They exist in even the goofiest and most entertaining comedies, like George of the Jungle. There are many ways to depict happy relationships, and these movie couples prove that love on the big screen can be healthy and scintillating, both.

Ninety-four songs and 149 scores have been deemed eligible in the music categories for the 96th annual Academy Awards, Variety has learned.
Voting began Thursday, with 390 members of the Academy music branch eligible to vote in this year’s competition. And for the first time in years, there appear to be no surprises or glaring omissions.
Any film can submit up to three songs, and the “Barbie” entries were as expected: Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made for,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and the Mark Ronson-Andrew Wyatt song “I’m Just Ken.”
Five other films submitted the maximum of three songs, including two from Disney: the live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with “For the First Time,” “The Scuttlebutt” and “Wild Uncharted Waters,” all by Alan Menken (who won Oscars for the original in 1989) and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and “Wish,” the Julia Michaels-Benjamin Rice tunes including “I’m a Star,...

The Princess Bride has had a bigger impact on pop culture than most movie retellings of classic fairy tales, thanks to its original story and beloved characters. Fairy tales have straightforward storylines, magical elements, and usually take place in a medieval setting. Movies like The Princess Bride, Stardust, and Howl's Moving Castle adapt modern fairy tale novels, incorporating recent themes while still capturing the charm and nostalgia of the genre.
The Princess Bride's original fairytale-like story has undeniably had a much bigger impact on pop culture than most movies retelling classic fairy tales. Many movies like The Princess Bride are adapted from novels, written by authors who set out to create their own modern fairy tales. These original stories use elements of the fairy tale genre while incorporating more recent themes and modern dialogue. Netflix's Damsel (2024) starring Millie Bobby Brown shows that this concept is still popular today.

Willie Nelson & Family, a documentary series about the country music icon from filmmakers Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman, is set to bow on Paramount+ on Dec. 21.
The career retrospective is creatively driven by directors Zimny and Moverman, both recent Emmy winners — Zimny for directing the variety special Springsteen on Broadway and Moverman for the TV movie Bad Education, starring Hugh Jackman.
Paramount+ acquired the documentary series, which recalls Nelson’s life and long career as an iconic country music singer-songwriter, after its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Nelson participated in the production and allowed Zimny — a frequent Bruce Springsteen collaborator — and Moverman access to his archives.
The four-parter is executive produced by Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan and is a production of MTV Entertainment Studios, in association with 101 Studios, Blackbird Presents Films and Sight Unseen. “Willie’s music formed the soundtrack of my youth. Neil Gaiman's newest TV project, Anansi Boys, has the potential to fix the failures of the previously adapted American Gods. American Gods failed due to constant changes in showrunners, leading to a loss of its magic and ultimately cancellation. Anansi Boys, set in the same world as American Gods, has the opportunity to repair the legacy of Gaiman's work with a solid team behind it.
Author Neil Gaiman has had several of his works adapted to the screen, from The Sandman to Good Omens, but his newest television project, Anansi Boys, will be the perfect fix for a previously failed Gaiman project, American Gods. Neil Gaiman is an English writer who is known for his fantastical stories, including "Coraline" and "Stardust." Over the years, a great many of his projects have been turned into movies and television series with varying success. One example of a less-than-stellar Neil Gaiman adaptation is American Gods.

Matthew Vaughn's upcoming movie Argylle has received its MPA rating, and it may come as a surprise to fans of the director's recent output.
Per ComicBook.com, the Motion Picture Association has handed out a PG-13 rating for Argylle due to the movie's "strong violence and action and some strong language." This marks Vaughn's first PG-13 film since 2011's X-Men: First Class. The only other film directed by Vaughn to receive a PG-13 rating is 2007's Stardust. His other directorial efforts — Layer Cake (2004), Kick-Ass (2010), Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) and The King's Man (2021) — have all been rated R.

Argylle is rated PG-13, director Matthew Vaughn's first non-r-rated movie since 2011's X-Men: First Class. The upcoming movie follows a spy novelist played by Bryce Dallas Howard as she is drawn into a real-world espionage plot, with Henry Cavill playing her titular character, Argylle. While the PG-13 rating is good news for the film's box office prospects, Vaughn has a proven talent for graphic R-rated action scenes, and it's unclear if Argylle's more tame action will be as effective.
Argylle's age rating has been revealed, and it breaks a 12-year tradition for Kingsman movie franchise director Matthew Vaughn. Vaughn's follow-up after 2021's The King's Man sees the director once again exploring the espionage genre. Argylle follows a spy novelist, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, as she is drawn into a real-life secret agent plot, with a cast that includes Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Ariana DeBose, John Cena,...

Matthew Vaughn is no stranger to spy movies. The iconoclastic genre filmmaker has already directed three Kingsman movies, and that came after having a brief flirtation with James Bond. Yet the filmmaker who’s also dabbled in fantasy (Stardust) and superheroes (Kick-Ass) is up to something extra mischievous with Argylle, his new 2024 action spectacle: he’s playing it for real. Kind of.
Set in a heightened world where Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard playing the allegedly real-life author of the Argylle novel) stops writing spy fiction, which includes Henry Cavill as her idealized agent Argylle and begins living it upon meeting a spook played by Sam Rockwell, Argylle sees Vaughn changing the game.
You’re a connoisseur of espionage and spy films. So what about Argylle appealed to you after doing three Kingsman movies?

Emotional scenes in fantasy movies evoke lasting responses, making viewers want to rewatch them again and again. Iconic scenes like Yvaine's realization of love in Stardust and Sarah defeating the Goblin King in Labyrinth are still stirring upon a rewatch. Visually stunning scenes such as the duel between Dumbledore and Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix continue to engage and captivate viewers.
Many scenes in fantasy movies are still incredible to watch, even years after their initial release. Franchises like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are incredibly rewatchable due to the sheer amount of nostalgic moments and mind-blowing action scenes associated with them. Other fantasy movies, like Marvel's X-Men, continue to be revisited because of their iconic characters and timeless storylines.

Reimagining the rules, themes, and applications of magic can breathe new life into the fantasy genre and capture the audience's imagination. A unique twist on magic allows authors to convey deeper meanings and explore the consequences and limitations of magic in their stories. Magic systems in movies like Stardust, Eragon, and The Golden Compass play a pivotal role in the narrative, shaping the world and forcing characters to question their beliefs and connections with the divine.

Matthew Vaughn has firmly established himself as one of the most exciting directors of his generation, and his early films Layer Cake and Stardust proved that he could master multiple genres. He adapted Mark Millar’s subversive espionage comic book series Kingsman into one of its era's best R-rated action franchises. After Kingsman: The Secret Service blew audiences away with its sheer absurdity, Vaughn reunited the original cast for the somewhat underwhelming sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle. He next ventured into the past with his prequel The King’s Man, which explored the origins of the British intelligence network during the World War I era.

Coraline captures the essence of Neil Gaiman's work, bringing his voice to a different medium in a way that many other adaptations have struggled to achieve. The movie balances scary moments with dark humor, creating a narrative that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. James Gunn wants experienced superhero directors for his new Dcu, and Matthew Vaughn could be one of them. Vaughn has had conversations with Gunn about joining the DC franchise, although he is currently focused on creating his own projects. The only available movie for Vaughn in the upcoming Dcu projects is The Authority, which would be a good fit given his experience with the X-Men and the anti-hero theme of the story.

As a filmmaker, Matthew Vaughn seems incapable of taking the material he's working with seriously. It's a quality that's allowed him to carve out a niche as a specialist in deliberately irreverent genre fare like "Stardust" and "Kick-Ass" but made him a bit of a poor match for "X-Men: First Class". It can also make his "Kingsman" films pretty polarizing since they allow him to double-dip on his juvenile humor to the point of self-indulgence. In fact, the one time Vaughn tried to play things seriously with that franchise, the result was the tonally bizarre prequel "The King's Man."
This is all to say that Vaughn's abandoned "Superman" trilogy always seemed like an odd proposition. As he's talked about on many occasions over the years, Vaughn and his "Kick-Ass" and "Kingsman" cohort, writer Mark Millar, approached Warner Bros. in 2008 in the hopes of convincing the studio to sign off on...

Matthew Vaughn had big plans for a 'Stardust' sequel. The 52-year-old director was at the helm of the beloved 2007 fantasy adventure - which was based on Neil Gaiman's 1999 novel of the same name and starred the likes of Claire Danes, Charlie Cox and Ricky Gervais - and despite Paramount Pictures being put off by the box office performance, the filmmaker was keen to explore other ideas with those characters. He told Collider: "It was such a, you know this concept I’d done."The bottom line of it, you said you’re a big fan, it’s the death of Tristan and Yvaine, and he throws the necklace off, the necklace lands in 1960s London."So you have these crazy characters running around 1960s London but fitting in because it was a crazy time."He and the studio disagreed over how the original movie should be marketed,...

Matthew Vaughn is opening up about one of the reasons he had for quitting directing X-Men: The Last Stand. The director revealed during New York Comic Con he left the film after finding out a scheme to get Halle Berry to sign on to reprise her role of Storm by tricking her with a fake script.
“One of the main reasons I quit X-Men 3, and this is a true story. Hollywood is really political and odd,” he said during Nycc (via ScreenRant). “I went to an executive’s office and I saw an X3 script. It was a lot fatter. I asked, ‘What is this draft?’ They were like, ‘Don’t worry about it.'”
He continued, “So I grabbed it, and opened the first page, and it said, ‘Africa. Kids dying from no water, and Storm creates a thunderstorm to save all these children.’ I thought it was a pretty cool idea.

Sixteen years after the release of Stardust, Matthew Vaughn is still thinking about the concept he had come up with for the development of a potential sequel. While the original adaptation's box office performance convinced the studio that working on a second film would be a bad idea, the filmmaker was excited to explore more adventures set in a different time from what was seen on the big screen. During an interview with Collider's Maggie Lovitt at this year's edition of New York Comic-Con, the director talked about the ideas he had already set in place for the creation of a sequel to Stardust:...
