I agree with the last reviewer, as this episode may have been inspired by all the fatal drag racing events in southern California at the time, especially in the Valley, and Warner Brothers was not that far away.
The sad thing is that (as of 2023) street racing is returning.
Stu goes to work for a wealthy old gent called John Montaigne (well played by beedy eye Vaughn Taylor). His nephew, Drake, is into drag racing big time, but there's another problem. Besides being a dangerous "hobby," someone wants him dead.
More over, old man Montaigne ain't a big fan of Stu and believes he may have some connection to the case.
There's some super hot rod scenes right off the bat in this adventure, and Stu is naturally aided by Kooky and JR (Robert Logan). Veteran Robert Douglas masterfully directed this episode and got the very best out of the cast, particularly Vaughn Taylor. Throughout his long career, Taylor played some memorable roles, quite similar to Robert Keith, the father of Brian Keith.
Also look for Max Baer, Jr, as Billy, about a year before BEVERLY HILLBILLIES fame. Max did some great dramatic work long before comedy. Also popular character actor Paul Carr plays Eddie.
This may have been the last script written by Fred Brady, long time writer at Warner Brothers tv. Fred passed suddenly in November 1961, and it was a shock to all. He was also an actor and in the 40s appeared in several popular B films, before turning to writing for both movies and television. This episode truly showed what a talented writer he was.
Not to be missed, and thank you to METV for rerunning these classic episodes. SEASON 4 remastered WB dvd box set.
