- Hired by Brian Brewster - the wannabe real estate baron and chief entrepreneur of the island - Reverend Daniel Cooper arrives on Hope Island to start his new job as the minister for the island's Protestant church, which has been closed for thirty years. Before Daniel's arrival, all the island's Protestants attended service on the mainland. Daniel sees this job as the start of a new life as he is running away from something in his past. But before Daniel starts his new job, he will have to overcome Brian's view of the church, which he sees more as a Las Vegas chapel which also serves as a revenue generating tourist attraction. Regardless, the church building itself requires much renovation before it can again become a functioning building as neglect on the building has taken its toll. As Daniel gets settled into life on the island, he meets an assortment of residents including: Nub Flanders, Brian's faithful gopher; single mother and staunch atheist Alex Stone, who owns and operates the local hotel and bar, the Widow's Walk; Alex's precocious adolescent son, Dylan, who has an interest in this mysterious new man to the island; Father Mac, the priest of the island's Catholic church; Molly Brewster, Brian's daughter who works at the Widow's Walk; Kevin Mitchum, the island's police officer and Molly's boyfriend of three years; Callie Pender, the newspaper's editor; and mother and daughter Ruby and Bonita Vasquez, who run the local store and who cohabitate despite not having spoken to each other in seventeen years. But he may not get to know them long as not seeing eye-to-eye with Brian may make Daniel reconsider this new life. Meanwhile Kevin's father, Jake, has come to the island for a visit. Also a former police officer, Jake gives his son some news which Kevin does not want to accept: Jake has the onset of Alzheimer's.—Huggo
