The Very Best Episode of the Entire Series
JasonDanielBaker7 September 2012
Biker dude on a Nighthawk motorcycle speeds along highways outside Los Angeles looking to get flagged by the highway patrol for speeding. After he is pulled over he challenges the cops to impromptu wild west-style quickdraw showdowns and kills them using silicone coated bullets.

Loose cannon Los Angeles cop Sgt. Rick Hunter (Fred Dryer) and partner Sgt. Dee Dee McCall (Stepfanie Kramer) investigate and trace the motive back to a country western bar and a wild west-style quick-draw video game which a few patrons take a little too seriously.

When using Dee Dee as bait to flush out the suspect fails Hunter decides to use himself as bait and a showdown is on.

The plot-line is one that could have fit with pretty much any cop show and served as an intriguing episode but this is the series that shot it and made it fit so well with its own formula. The Hunter character was like a modern day wild west lawman and this episode reflects that.

The fantastic cartoonish performance given by character actor Steve Sandor makes this episode worth watching all the more. Sandor was the type of actor who might be seen in Bronson/Eastwood vigilante action movies and was thus an impeccable casting choice.

This is the very best episode of the entire series even though the original music which featured impeccable use of "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Rolling Stones was replaced by a different track which does not fit even close to as well.

Note:

Hunter famously had a habit of physically abusing suspects of African-American, Asian and Latino persuasion. He also had a habit of physically abusing anyone who was a little different. In this episode that includes a 240 pound Black transvestite purse snatcher named Rufus. McCall for her part criticizes Rufus for stealing purses that don't match his pink sequined evening gown.

Warning: Spoilers
The kind of cheesy episode that showed up just how hammy Hunter was a show and not in a good way.

I'm not talking about the scene where Hunter is chasing a black transvestite purse snatcher in high heels, except she is clearly wearing flats.

A motorcycle cop is blown away late at night by an assailant who asks him to draw. Later another cop is killed.

Hunter's investigations takes him to a seedy country & western bar with patrons playing a quick draw arcade game.

This is a laughably bad episode. A villain who kills cops because he is hacked off that they got a higher score than him in an arcade game.

Then there is the typical vigilante cop speech between Hunter and De Dee of them and us. A staple of Cannon Films of the time where the line would be spoken by a tough no nonsense cop played Charles Bronson.

Conveniently forgetting that if you are an innocent black person. You could be callously gun down by some cops and they would not even face punishment.
