Strong Episode from the Later Era
kgraovac14 November 2023
Jan is anxious about daughter Ellen dating a senior; Howard borrows from Nancy to pay off a loan shark.

This is a superior, well-written episode that should have been the Season-Opener. The girls all have longer hair and Amy's is much curlier. The cast seems very energized and everything is well-paced. It is actually as close to an ABC-era episode than anything they've done since Sheryl Lee Ralph joined the cast.

The writers still haven't got a handle on Ellen's age. In Season 1 she was around 10 or 11 years old. She remained that age in 1985 in Season 3, and now Ellen is portrayed as being 14. She refers to Sonny as "Uncle Sonny" and he sings the 1965 Jewel Aikens song "The Birds and the Bees" to Ellen and her date.

Nancy agrees to lend Howard the money but she purposely comes up $300 short to force him into giving sexual favors. Sonny saves the day by giving Howard his new automatic bank card. It's quaint to see such things presented as a novelty in these old episodes.

Dot tells a funny story about a sweater and makes a cute remark about a Ken doll's lack of anatomy.

Amy's line "I used to think about EVERYTHING" seems a bit out-of-character, since she's such a prude.

This is one of the best Season 5 episodes.
