- Barney meets with his brother, publisher Lawrence Collier, and DA Scanlon. They talk about how the black mob has moved into the neighborhood. Scanlon wants Lawrence to get him proof against the ringleader, Captain Dave Abbot. Barney worries that the mob will come after Lawrence. Once Scanlon leaves, Barney and his older brother talk about family briefly. Barney asks Lawrence to take of himself and then leaves.
As Barney goes out on the street to his car, a car drives by and tosses a grenade in the window of Lawrence's office. The car drives off and the grenade explodes, demolishing the office. Barney runs over and digs in the rubble, and finds his dying brother.
Laster, Barney meets with the team in Jim's apartment. Jim explains that Lawrence was close to establishing a link between Abbot and George Corley, who runs the black mob in the ghetto. Barney says that he no reason to get them involved in their personal problem, but the rest of the team tell him he's wasting their time. Barney thanks them, and Jim confirms that Barney's criminal file is already set up with the police. William Goslin is the mob's accountant, a holdover from the old mob, and he's been interested in spiritualism since his wife died six months ago. His wife was a minor league singer, and Jim has a recording of the wife. Dana will have to impersonate her dialect and intonation. The spiritualist, Dr. Milton Wyatt, has agreed to take a contribution into his charity. Last they go over a photo of Millie Webster, Corley's private secretary, who Barney will use to get into the mob.
Millie leaves her office and is mugged by Willy. Barney intervenes and saves her. Willy mugger runs off, and Millie takes Barney to her office to get him a bandage. Willy doubles back and climbs up the pipe to the office. In the office, Millie tends to Barney's faked injuries. Willy keeps climbing.
In Wyatt office, the spiritualist introduces Paris as a visiting psychic from Germany who will conduct the sitting that night. Wyatt lowers the life and Paris begins his séance
Millie and Barney introduce themselves, and Willy enters the room above and plants a gas canister. He then breaks into the office safe using a safecracking device.
Paris introduces Dana, who is also there, and summons the ghost of her father. She speaks pretending to be Goslin's wife, and tells him to be careful because they're planning something. Dana says that Goslin is in danger, then snaps out of her trance.
Barney thanks Millie, who gets him a drink. Pod Hamp, her mob bodyguard, and says that any stranger is his business. When Millie explains that Barney saved her from a mugger, Hamp figures that it was a set-up and pulls a gun on Barney, telling him to take off his jacket. Barney does so and Hamp searches it for ID. The ID papers confirm Barney is who he says he is, and Barney jumps Hamp, takes his gun. George Corley comes in with a gun and tells Barney to put his gun down, and Barney readily does so. Corley asks Barney for his story, and Barney repeats what happened. Corley holsters his gun and says they're an insurance company, and most of their carriers have cash, so they take carry guns. Barney says that he's between jobs, and Corley gives him money for protecting Millie, and has Millie escort Barney out.
Corley calls Abbot and has him check out Barney's background. Jim meets with Abbot and suggests Abbot transfer his protection to his organization rather than Corley's He pays Abbot $20,000 up front as a gesture of good faith. Abbot refuses, figuring that Corley will come after him.
In the safe, Willy plants some bills and sees an elevator coming Hamp comes up and goes into the room Willy is in, then settles on the bed.
Paris and Goslin ask Dana to attend a private setting so she can channel Goslin's wife. She finally agrees.
Once Hamp dozes off, Willy sneaks out the window the way he came in.
The next night, Millie is at her apartment, and Barney arrives for a date they agreed to earlier. She says that Corley checks on Barney and discovered that he ran numbers for a West Coast mob. Barney says that he checked on Corley and confirmed that he runs the mob. Millie tells Barney that they need a new accountant, as Corley has never really trusted Goslin. Barney confirms that he knows the computers, and Millie offers him the job.
Soon, Barney is working in the mob office. Corley and Hamp take some of the money out, and Corley introduces Barney to Goslin and says Barney is his new assistant. Once the others leave, Barney confirms there's an overage (because of the money Willy put in), and reports it to Corley. Corley calls in Goslin, who says that Barney must have made a mistake. Corley ran the total himself and confirmed the overage, and tells Goslin to make sure the $10,000 doesn't end up in his pocket.
Later, Barney and Millie go to her apartment and dance. The couple flirt, and Millie tells Barney that he doesn't come on hard. She says that Corley has told her he's willing to let Goslin go when Barney says the word. Barney kisses her instead. Hamp calls Millie and has her put Barney on, and tells Barney to stay away from Millie or he'll kill Barney. Barney hangs up and asks Millie if there's anything between her and Hamp. She says that there isn't, and warns Barney that killing comes easy to Hamp.
The trio hold their private séance, and Goslin gives Paris his wife Clara's wedding ring. They join hands and Dana goes into a trance. She channels Clara and tells Goslin that he's in danger, and people want to kill him. She also says Corley has someone to do Goslin's work, and Goslin can't confront the mobster. She says that Goslin knows too much, and should take information so Corley will be afraid of Goslin.
Once Goslin leaves, Paris calls Jim and tells him that Goslin is on his way. Willy triggers the canister, which pumps knock out gas into Hamp's room. Hamp dozes off, and Goslin enters the office, confirms Hamp is unconscious, and takes a passbook from the safe. He prints information from the computer using the codes in the passbook, and then leaves with the printout. Jim and Willy are waiting outside in their car, pose as FBI agents, and tell Goslin to get in. They take him to a warehouse and say that they want evidence against Corley and Barney for murder. Goslin says that he doesn't know anything about killing, but Jim puts the pressure on him.
Later, Jim calls Abbot and reads him the bank account information that Goslin printed out. Abbot gets the idea and asks where they meet. Jim sets a rendezvous for that night, tells him to bring Hamp alone, and after he hangs up confirms that Willy has the tranquilizer gun.
Jim and Paris meet up with Abbot and Hamp, and put pressure on Abbot to confess to everything. Paris says that they don't need Abbot, and Abbot says that he's in. Abbot agrees, and Jim says that they have to get rid of Corley. Hamp says that they'll have to get of Barney as well, and agrees to kill him. Jim tells Hamp that they'll put Hamp in Corley's place, and Hamp agrees but says that he can't get to Corley that late. Abbot says that there's a way, and Hamp should be at Corley's HQ later.
Abbot calls Millie, and tells her to get Barney and Corley to Corley's office and tells her to tell them that Goslin went to Scanlon carrying a briefcase. Once Millie hangs up, Millie tell Barney that she'd better meet Corley at the office because she got a tip from a friend in the police that Goslin is talking to the DA.
Barney goes to Corley's office and meets with Corley, and they check the computes for the information Goslin took. Hamp comes in and draws a shotgun on them. Outside, Millie drives up and goes in. Jim and Paris are watching, and wonder why Millie is there. She goes up to the computer room, where Hamp is telling Corley that Abbot and his men are taking over. Willie is secretly watching, and Millie comes in and tells Hamp that Abbot told her to tell Hamp not to kill Barney, but he didn't say why,. Hamp figures that Millie is lying to save her love, and if Millie doesn't leave Hamp will kill her along with Barney and Corley. Millie refuses to go without Barney, and Hamp tells her to over with Barney and Corley.
Willy shoots Hamp with the tranquilizer gun, and Barney tell Corley to hide somewhere until they can get him out of the country. Before Corley goes, he tells Corley that after all he's done for her, she tries to save Barney's life but not his. Corley goes out to his car, and Jim and Paris take Corley to Scanlon. They say they're taking Corley to Abbot's station, and Corley says that Abbot will kill him and make it look like suicide. He tells Jim to take him to Scanlon and he'll talk.
Barney ties up Hamp and Millie asks Barney to hold her. He does, and she tells him that they have to run together. Barney says that the DA has Abbot, and Millie realizes that Barney set her up. He tells Millie that Lawrence was his brother, and he would have set up anyone to avenge his brother. Barney admits that he didn't even the score, and Millie is furious with Barney. He says she'll get a couple off for saving his life, tells her goodbye, and starts to leave. Crying, Millie screams at him as he goes.
In Scanlon's office, Barney meets with the DA. Scanlon thanks Barney for his help, and Barney leaves and meets with his teammates. They drive off together.
