There was an actual General Vandenberg who did fight in World War Two. Youthful and handsome, Hoyt Vandenberg served in the US Army Air Force during the war and became a brigadier general at age 43. He rose to become a four-star general, later served as the US Air Force Chief of Staff, and was the second-ever Director of Central Intelligence. Vandenberg Space Force Base near Lompoc, California, is named for him.

The fountain at the end of the episode when the guys are talking to Davy is: The 'Friends' fountain made infamous in the show's opening credits was meant to represent a park in Greenwich Village in New York City. Built in the late 1930's the fountain has been seen in several other movies and TV shows, like The Monkees, The Flying Nun, Friends, Lois & Clark, West Wing and Birds of Prey.
