Maxwell and Fran accidentally run into Maxwell's estranged father, James. The estrangement occurred because James ran off with his secretary, Joan, leaving his family behind. Fran decides to bring the Sheffield family back together by inviting James for dinner. Maxwell is livid, especially as James brings Joan along. On the surface at least, Joan and James are an older, British version of Maxwell and Fran, except that James eventually married Joan. Because of the elder Sheffield's nuptials, Fran ends up being the one who is livid since Maxwell won't commit to her. But Maxwell thinks that perhaps his father does has the right attitude about life and he decides that he should make a go with it with Fran. But his decision to do so takes just as quick a turn in the other direction when cavalier advice from James adversely affects Sylvia, and by association, Fran's life.
