Voyager is instructed by Starfleet to retrieve a probe that was sent from Earth in the 21st century and was not heard from since. Its last known whereabouts is where Voyager is now. Janeway sends some men to retrieve it but they discover that the planet it is on is inhabited, and the inhabitants believe that the probe is a weapon because it emanates an energy that is harming them. They tell Janeway to help them relocate. But Seven thinks they can cure them and remove the energy that is harming them. And when Janeway tells them, they don't believe her. They insist that Janeway relocate them and if she doesn't they will kill her people and they kill one of them to prove they're serious.

The Friendship One probe in this story is a thinly veiled approximation of the (appropriately named) Voyager I & II space probes launched by NASA in 1977. They also include records (made of gold) that have greetings from Earth in 55 languages including - no kidding - whale. There are also over 100 scenes of Earth and music from Bach to Chuck Berry. At this point in time, the probes are over 13 billion miles from home but still far from even one light year which is 6 trillion miles. See more
When the origin of the nanoprobes used to treat him is revealed as being in Seven's bloodstream, Otrin asks if there are others like her in the crew. Seven replies no and that she is unique; however there is another former Borg drone, Icheb, in the crew. See more
