Storyline

This costume drama features England's splendid Renaissance dynasty under King Henry VIII. Beginning in Season 1 when Henry VIII was growing desperate for an heir and growing distant from his first wife, the series moves quickly to the period when Anne Boleyn became his obsession. During this time Cardinal Wolsey rose to become the power behind his throne, ruling ruthlessly and nearly absolutely while Henry (played by Johnathon Rhys Meyers) for the most part followed the Cardinal's advice, maneuvering through a series of betrayals and plots against him. When Anne Boleyn plays much harder to get than any woman ever has, Henry begins to search for a way out of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, so that he can make Anne his wife. Needing a divorce, Henry turns to Wolsey, who promises to help him create waves of backlash from the church, as well as the Spanish Habsburg dynasty and its overseas empire. Against this background gyrate the private lives and political intrigues of several ... Written by KGF Vissers and Ayla Slessor

Trivia

Natalie Dormer, a natural blonde, dyed her hair brunette after learning she got the role of Anne Boleyn. She later found out that the Showtime executives had wanted her to keep the blonde and they sent her back to try to change the color again. After a botched hair dye job, she begged to keep her hair brunette to stay true to the real Anne Boleyn, and they ultimately accepted. See more »

Goofs

Music used in the series was sometimes not appropriate to time. Two examples are Spem in Alium Nunquam Habui, composed by Thomas Tallis about 1570; and Jubilate Deo for 8 voices by Giovanni Gabrieli, who was born at earliest three years before Henry died. Neither of these works could have been performed in the time setting of the series as they had not yet been written. See more »

User Reviews

A wonderful show even if it is not completely historically accurate

The Tudors is a fantastic show which showcases the life and times of King Henry the VIII. As the opening of the show tells the viewer, "You think you know a story but you only know how it ends. To get to the heart of a story you have to go back to the beginning." I'm sure a lot of people watching the show are watching it for entertainment and not because of its historical accuracy. I personally love Tudor England and know a lot about it. The show takes many liberties, but that's why it's entertainment and not a biographic film on the King. It's fascinating to see what is kept of what many believe to be true and what is changed. Things such as basing Henry's sister Margaret after both his sister Mary and his older sister Margaret is very interesting turn. The first four episodes have been phenomenal works of cinematic art which I hope will continue on for seasons to come.
