Sex & Nudity

  • In one scene in episode 25 a man is seen kissing a woman as the camera moves away.
  • There is occasional innuendo, but nothing explicit.
  • In episode one, a woman is surrounded by a group of bikers who try to rape her. Things escalate to violence when one of them takes a bar and chokes her from behind and says "strip her". One of them goes to undo her pants, but the woman is saved before anything further can happen.
  • In episode 25 you can see the outline of a breast.
  • A man hits on a young woman while on a train, while she's clearly uncomfortable.
  • A teenage model is one of the major characters in the show. She doesn't have any fanservice scenes, but her beauty and charisma is shown in the show, as (mostly older) males get attracted to her easily.
  • A woman is seen showering. The side of her breasts and bare back are briefly visible.
  • A man points a gun at a woman and tells her to take off her clothes. Her cleavage and bare back are briefly visible before she covers herself with a blanket. The scene is not meant to be sexual.
  • A teenage boy looks at adult magazines. We see closeups of women wearing skimpy bikinis in risqué poses. No nudity. The scene doesn't last long and the boy doesn't get aroused by the pictures.
  • A man pickpockets a woman's cellphone off of her, under the guise that he's playfully groping her.
  • A young woman occasionally wears a shirt that reveals her abdomen.

Violence & Gore

  • A man is run over by a truck. The aftermath shows blood.
  • A man bleeds to death.
  • The show is not really that violent, as it focuses on how a young man wants to rid the world of criminals. There are deaths but they are mostly implied by cops. Sometimes people are shown clutching their chest as they're having a heart attack.
  • Moderate violence and some blood. The series centers on the serial killing of criminals. Torture takes place. Murders supernaturally set forth by the main character manifest in the real world as people suddenly dying of heart attacks; one victim is shown being hit by a truck. Brief scenes of criminal activity, including hostage-taking, as well as discussions of various violent criminal behavior.
  • A character shoots another one multiple times, mostly in the arm area. The latter starts bleeding, as blood drips down on the ground. At one point he basically swims in his pool of blood. He soon starts running while holding his wound, and is shown with blood on his clothes, but the focus isn't on the blood as the scene is emotional.
  • Two teenagers (major characters) "fight" for a little while, but it's slapstick type of violence, so it's not meant to be taken seriously at all.
  • There is at least one death per episode, but it's often just implied, and if not, will usually be brief and not very bloody, since heart attacks are the most common method. However, there are some instances of shooting and sometimes blood is shown. Due to the show's realistic art style, the deaths can be slightly disturbing.
  • Multiple characters die of forced heart attacks.

Profanity

  • In the English dub, "smartass" was only used once in the entire series.
  • Opening 2 "Whats Up People?!" has six F words and one S word in it. (in english and this is full version)
  • The language is fairly mild and infrequent in the English dub. The most you will hear is "damn", "hell', "bastard", "crap", and at least one "ass".
  • In the English sub, all the above language, "asshole" and the occasional "fuck'' (rare, and it depends on the subtitled version).

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • In one scene a man pretends to be drunk.
  • Two women are seen sipping wine in a restaurant
  • Some characters drink some wine.
  • Occasional cigarette smoking throughout the series, however none of the major characters smoke.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A young girl is held in confinement and tortured (off-screen, but heavily implied). She is seen in a straight jacket and constraints wearing a blindfold, and eventually begs to be killed. This is really disturbing and may unsettle some viewers.
  • Religion is one of the topics throughout of the series.
  • Not overly disturbing or bloody, but very atmospheric and psychological, and usually moderately intense.
  • A bit more than the first half of the series contains some wholesome and light-hearted moments, but the show keeps getting darker and the characters become more serious as the plot progresses.
  • The whole concept of the show is how people can use a notebook to kill almost anyone they want to. It can be frightening and intense.
  • The series has a very dark tone, revolving around a young man who, being upset with crimes and criminals getting away, uses a notebook with the power to kill those criminals. His noble intentions, however, are quickly lost and he abuses his power. The series throughout is very intense and suspenseful. This all reaches its climax in the finale, when the protagonist becomes totally insane. There are some disturbing scenes throughout the series.
  • Intense and upsetting deaths include: a woman being hanged and another burned to death. The most upsetting and depressing factor is that both of these deaths were suicides caused by the main character after writing down how they die in the Death Note.
  • A man's family is slowly destroyed over the course of years due to his selfish actions. This can be emotionally upsetting for some.
  • A few of the characters in the series are Shinigami (Japanese soul reapers/"gods of death"), and their appearance may be frightening to some. However, they are not shown to do any scary actions, but just mostly spectate the happenings in the "Human World", much like the audience.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • The final episode is more violent than the rest of the series. A man stabs himself with a pen and gore sprays upwards. It is mainly intense as there is a lot of ground to cover in the final minutes of the show.
  • During an abduction that led to a pursuit, a man was surrounded by the victim's bodyguards. The man surrendered peacefully, but the bodyguards opened fire at him. His body is full of bloody bullet holes as it collapses to the ground.
  • The main character forces a woman to hang herself.
  • The main character is shot multiple times, tons of blood sprays each time he is shot and we see a lot of blood dripping down his hand. Later he is killed by another character who uses the Death Note. His corpse is covered in bloody bullet holes.
  • The main characters set up a plan in which another character will die by gunfire by police officers. The victim is unaware of that that he is to die. He later follows the plan and is killed by police. Moderately graphic.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A young girl is kidnapped and held for ransom. She is rescued, but is afterwards seen in a wheelchair, with bruises. which may be upsetting for some viewers.
  • A fan favorite ( L ) character dies towards the end of the show, it's very emotional and sad.
  • The last episode of the entire series is extremely dark.
  • Light's father, Soichiro Yagami, dies, and it's quite emotional. It's also upsetting that he dies genuinely believing that his son is innocent.
  • The protagonist of the show seems to become a cold psychopathic serial killer by the end of the show. However, it's possible that he was always such a person hiding behind many layers. His morals and emotional responses are very shallow and can be interpreted in many ways. His motives may make sense at the start of the series, but he gets lost in his ego and his goals turn into killing whoever he wants to.
