Storyline

Winston Churchill is named Prime Minister on the very day the Nazis launch their invasion of the low countries and France. The immediate concern is the fate of the British Expeditionary Force now trapped with their back to the sea. The evacuation at Dunquerque saved most of them. Churchill formed a unified government with the Labour party and was steadfast in refusing to negotiate with the Germans. He developed a personal relationship with U.S. President Roosevelt but England (as Churchill always referred to the UK) stood alone until the U.S. entered the war. By war's end however, Labour won the election and Churchill was out of office. Written by garykmcd

Trivia

The character who was awarded the Victoria Cross was based on Flight Lieutenant Eric James Brindley Nicolson of fighter squadron 249. The citation reads:

"During an engagement with the enemy near Southampton on 16th August 1940, Flight Lieutenant Nicolson's aircraft was hit by four cannon shells, two of which wounded him whilst another set fire to the gravity tank. When about to abandon his aircraft owing to flames in the cockpit he sighted an enemy fighter. This he attacked and shot down, although as a result of staying in his burning aircraft he sustained serious burns to his hands, face, neck and legs. Flight Lieutenant Nicolson has always displayed great enthusiasm for air fighting and this incident shows that he possesses courage and determination of a high order. By continuing to engage the enemy after he had been wounded and his aircraft set on fire, he displayed exceptional gallantry and disregard for the safety of his own life."

The above-mentioned action was the first time that Nicolson had ever engaged the enemy.

In 1942 he was posted to India and promoted to Wing Commander and Squadron Commander of a group of twin-engine Bristol Beaufighters (a robust multiple-mission attack aircraft), where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. In May of 1945, at the age of 28, while flying as an observer in a B-24 Liberator, the plane caught fire and the crew was lost in the Bay of Bengal. See more »

Goofs

When Churchill visits an RAF base, and the squadron is scrambled, a Spitfire and a Hurricane are shown taking off as a pair. In fact, Hurricane and Spitfire operations were kept separate, and the two types would not have been mixed at (and scrambled from) the same dispersal, as depicted in the film. See more »

Quotes

Winston Churchill: We are told that Herr Hitler has a plan for invading the British Isles. This has often been thought of before. I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once more able to defend our island home to outlive the menace of tyranny if necessary for years, if necessary alone.

I thought it was very good
5 December 2009 | by karl_consiglioSee all my reviews

I thought it was very good. Someone said that it does not bring out the man's humor but I disagree. They also said that Clemmie looks more on the verge of divorcing him then the supportive wife she was, but I disagree on that too. One might say those things for they might remember a hell of a lot more having lived those years, but what I think this film gathers up best are those pieces in history as they have been recorded, and those most relevant for that matter. Very good acting in my opinion, very convincing. Churchill, what a man, I like these kind of biographical movies when they are done well, and this one sure was.
