That Skywalkers: A Love Story maintains its grip on your attention despite some of director Jeff Zimbalist’s florid aesthetic choices testifies to the strength of the documentary’s central narrative. At the heart of this terrifying and exhilarating Sundance entry about two Russian daredevils trying to save their relationship is a poignant lesson in trust.
Before Angela Nikolau and Ivan “Beerkus” Kuznetsov fell in love, they were rivals. The Russian rooftoppers — a term used to describe people who illegally scale tall structures without protective equipment — engaged in an unofficial competition of sorts. Unlike other rooftoppers, the soft-spoken urban adventurer’s Instagram posts about his architectural conquests lent a professional air to the illegal activity. Pelé, the Brazilian national treasure who in the 1960s and ’70s made soccer popular in places on the planet that hadn’t yet embraced “the beautiful game” — in particular the U.S. — has died. He was 82.
An unequaled hero of futbol, Pelé died Thursday, his agent told the Associated Press, after he was hospitalized for the past month. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in September 2021.
Pelé burst onto the international stage during the 1958 World Cup tournament, where he scored three goals in a semifinal match and two more in the final at the age of 17, capping a brilliant and emotional victory for the Brazil national team. He would win two more World Cup titles before joining the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League in 1975.

Soccer legend Pelé is justifiably regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time, and one of the most significant people of the 20th century. But sources in Netflix’s new documentary film “Pelé” argue he could have done more with his influence during the decades the country was under military rule.
After making his professional debut as a forward with Santos Fc at age 16, Pelé’s prodigious ability to score an absolutely insane amount of goals and his accuracy, stamina, and intuitive, graceful style of play elevated both him and Brazil to the top of worldwide soccer rankings. He became so popular even that in 1961 Brazil’s government declared him an “official national treasure” in order to prevent him from joining a soccer team in another county.

"At that moment, I didn't want to be Pelé." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for the documentary film Pelé, a brand new sports profile doc about the legendary football player known around the world simply as Pelé. There was also a narrative film called Pele: Birth of a Legend a few years ago, but that one's different from this film. Pelé, the new Netflix documentary, chronicles the life of the Brazilian football player, Edson Arantes do Nascimento - better known as Pelé. The documentary looks back at the extraordinary period when Pelé, the only player to win three World Cup titles, went from a young superstar in 1958 to a national hero, amidst a radical and turbulent era in Brazilian history - telling a story of Brazil's political history as connected to Pele. The film features tons of interviews and old footage, as well as testimonials from family members, journalists,...

A couple of things have caught our eye in February’s Netflix UK line-up, first, the German dystopian sci-fi Tribes of Europa. After the success of sci-fi series Dark, the streaming service invested in a bunch of new German-language series, including the mega-successful historical Barbarians. Tribes was among them, and tells the story of a group of siblings in 2074, separated after a global disaster that leaves Europe riven by warring factions. Also sounding like a good time is South Korean comedy Space Sweepers, about a spaceship crew tasked with cleaning up intergalactic trash.

As virtual market initiatives proliferate, Italy’s Nexo Digital, which co-produces and distributes theatrical event content for the global market, has set up a virtual product showcase to make up for the cancellation of the MipTV mart.
The MipTV global content market was due to run March 28-April 2 before the coronavirus pandemic forced its cancellation. MipTV Online Plus, the market’s premium online service will be available from March 30 and is free to all registered clients of MipTV, MipDoc and MipFormats.
But it’s clear that some companies are venturing into the virtual marketplace on their own.
Starting March 30, Nexo will launch a virtual screening room on its dedicated platform where buyers will be able to access their recent titles such as “#Anne Frank Parallel Stories,” an unconventional Holocaust doc featuring Helen Mirren as narrator, and TV series “Stolen Beauty: the Nazi Obsession for Art.”

Rahman, who is about to embark on his Intimate Tour in the UK, is bringing his unique style to the big screen. Widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, Pelé’s biographical film focuses on the Brazilian footballer’s early life. Directed and written by Jeff and Michael Zimbalist, the film is centered on the relationship between the character Pelé and his father.
The partnership sees football’s greatest talent meet Indian cinema’s most prolific composer. Known for his distinctive mix of eastern classical music with modern electro, world music and traditional orchestral arrangements, Rahman has sought inspiration from regional Brazilian sounds with international sensibilities.
Commenting on the lead song Ginga, Rahman says: “We were very careful not to go overboard. The song definitely doesn’t sound Indian, but gives the movie the energy which it needs. It’s not too regional but for the whole world.

Any biopic attempting to capture the character of a once-in-a-lifetime athlete has its work cut out for it. Brazil’s soccer legend Pelé is one such sportsman, but the breathlessly superficial “Pelé: Birth of a Legend” from writers-directors Jeff and Mike Zimbalist is not the movie so vibrant and boundary-busting a figure deserves. Pelé’s story is already so sturdily mythic it demands insight, not further burnishing: the poor black Brazilian kid with exuberantly mad skills who healed his racially-divided, football-loving nation with a 1958 World Cup-clinching performance at 17 that led to a record-breaking career as the sport’s most beloved icon.

A predictable and ham-fisted kids’ flick appears to be the aim of this attempt at committing the story of the Brazilian football great to celluloid, and it shows
In Star Wars – the first one – Luke Skywalker knows he’ll never be able to blow up the Death Star until he shuts down the fancy equipment on his X-Wing fighter, lets himself go and uses the Force. So it is with Pelé, the soccer star, who must disregard the Eurocentric obsessions of his coach and team captain, embrace his innate Brazilian gifts, and destroy those French jerks (and even nastier Swedes) who stand in the way of national glory.

It may be called Pelé: Birth of a Legend, but Jeff and Michael Zimbalist‘s film is really about Ginga soccer and Brazil at risk of losing its soul. The climax depicts the 1958 World Cup with the country’s unexpected run to the final on the back of a seventeen year-old hobbled by a sprained knee, but it’s not his goal scoring that inspires confidence. His ability to run around the pitch in complete ignorance of the Europeans’ formation game lights a fire that burns deeper than technique. Vicente Feola (Vincent D’Onofrio trying a Portuguese accent) was hired to rebrand the team after a debilitating loss in 1950 and poor sportsmanship in 1954 by invoking that European way, but Pelé (Kevin de Paula) refused to forget his identity.
Ginga goes back to the African slave heritage of Brazil’s black community — explained as a fighting style and spirituality all but outlawed outside the soccer field.

The woes of Playstation owners who play FIFA look to be mounting as EA Sports announced last week that 15 new Legends would be introduced to FIFA 15. These historical powerhouses of the beautiful game will be added to the already-ample roster of 42 Legends from FIFA 14, available exclusively to Xbox 360 and Xbox One gamers.
The notion of a team spear-headed by the combo of Pelé and Messi with service from Iniesta and Gheorghe Hagi is part of the reason virtual football can be so much more entertaining than the real thing; a cross-generational team of this nature is only possible thanks to FIFA Ultimate Teams’ inclusion of Legends.
Though there are still several notable absentees from FIFA 15’s roster of Legends such as Diego Maradona, Zinedine Zidane and Brazil’s Ronaldo, the 15 new players all improve an already excellent Xbox exclusive. One question which now needs answering is how these...

Jeff and Michael Zimbalist's "The Two Escobars" was one of the best films from the first round of Espn's "30 for 30" documentary series, not to mention a hit on the fest circuit, playing Tribeca, Cannes and the Los Angeles Film Festival. The doc explored how the lives and deaths of Columbian soccer player Andrés Escobar and drug lord Pablo Escobar were intertwined. The brothers are currently working on "Pele," a biopic of the Brazilian soccer legend that they co-wrote and directed, but they've also maintained their relationship with Espn, co-directing the first "30 for 30" short "Arnold's Blueprint," as well as "Youngstown Boys," which it was announced today will be the next feature-length film in the series to air. "Youngstown Boys," slated to premiere Saturday, December 14th at 9pm after the Heisman Trophy Presentation, is a look at the class and power dynamics in college sports as told through the stories of...

If I'm not mistaken, my introduction to soccer (or football) legend Pele was the 1987 film Hotshot. Like any ten-year-old I wanted to run out and do bicycle kicks, but the same year North Shore came out and I wanted to run off and be a surfer.
