YouTube star Lilly Singh, who formerly hosted the NBC talk show “A Little Late With Lilly Singh” and now costars on Disney+ series “The Muppets Mayhem,” told Penn Badgley on Thursday that although she feels connected to her religion and talks “to God every day,” she doesn’t like talking about it because religion is “used as ammo more than it’s used for unity.”
Speaking on Badgley’s “Podcrushed” podcast with Sophie Ansari and Nava Kavelin, Singh said, “My family’s not very religious. Growing up, I was probably one of the most religious members of my family.”
She continued, admitting that talking about religion publicly can “feel very icky.”
“And I’m gonna say an extra L.A. thing right now, which is, I’m not religious, I’m spiritual,” she said. “I believe in God. I talk to God every day, but I, as someone in the public eye,...

Today in news that will totally make you smile (I hope!), I'm thrilled to be the one to remind you there's a new Muppets series coming to Disney+ -- one that takes a deep dive into the rockin' world of The Electric Mayhem Band, aka that band of Muppets that is a regular fixture in most Jim Henson properties. Cute, right? Needless to say, I'm ready for "The Muppets Mayhem"— and the trailer is a major reason why.
In the show's sneak peek, we get reacquainted with the band and find out they've made a mark on some of the world's most famous musicians, including Tommy Lee, Chris Stapleton, and Lil Nas X. But the trailer drops a bomb on us: the legendary group has never actually made a record together. This show chronicles what exactly happens on Mayhem's quest to finally produce an album, many years after the height of their music career.

John Irwin has produced dozens of stand-up comedy specials for stars including Norm Macdonald, John Mulaney, Hannah Gadsby and Adam Sandler.
Irwin Entertainment, which he founded in 2004, is currently up for an Emmy for Netflix’s “Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special” and was previously nominated for Netflix’s “Hannah Gadsby: Douglas.”
Irwin got his start popping popcorn for “Saturday Night Live” honcho Lorne Michaels in 1990, the year that Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, David Spade and Chris Rock joined the show. Those connections helped form the foundation of his own comedy career as an in-demand producer. So, he has a lot of experience getting the best out of talent in live productions.
“I’ve really learned over the years, there is an art to it,” Irwin told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “You’re creating a real environment. You want that perfect vibe for both the audience and the comic,...

When Full Frontal launched on TBS in 2016, host Samantha Bee’s publicity tour was dogged by questions about her show signifying a shift in the late night comedy space — a space dominated by white men named Jimmy.
It was a media obsession that she tweaked in the premiere, which began with faux reporters peppering her with queries like: “Is it hard breaking into the boys’ club?” and “What’s it like as a female woman?”
Full Frontal With Samantha Bee — an opportunity long overdue for a host who watched as a string of fellow Daily Show correspondents got their own platforms ahead of her — truly was a breakout. It won awards and prompted conversation and controversy.
Though white men named Jimmy still dominate, the late night landscape that Bee leaves now isn’t the same as the one she arrived in; it’s more inclusive.

The news arrives after Singh -- who just crossed 10 million followers on Instagram -- ended her NBC late-night show, A Little Late With Lilly Singh, after two seasons and 161 episodes.
Nevertheless, Singh’s Hollywood onslaught will continue. In a video announcing her comeback to YouTube, she noted that her studio Unicorn Island Productions has a first-look deal with NBCUniversal in place to develop unscripted projects. With the proliferation of both talk shows and sketch programs, the TV academy decided to split the Emmy Awards variety series category into two separate categories in 2015 to better recognize achievements in both these genres. This is the third time in five years that there have been 20 Best Variety Talk Series entries on the nominations ballot, after 2017 and 2019. There were 24 last year, 21 in 2018, and 17 in 2016. Five of the series listed below will reap bids this year, making the odds for each entry pretty good.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 28 to cast their ballots for their favorite variety talk shows. In the past, voters were limited in the number of such shows that they could put forth; in 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. Unlike at the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

And Season 2 of YouTube star’s talk show declined even more than that from Season 1 On Thursday, NBC announced “A Little Late With Lilly Singh” would be ending after just its second season. Though the move was presented as a talent transition — Singh now has a first-look deal with Universal Television Alternative Studio to develop unscripted projects — the 1:30 a.m. show’s TV ratings also justify cancellation. Singh, who take over the time slot from Carson Daly’s long-running “Last Call” in 2019, struggled to find viewers — especially in Season 2. Over his final two years (2017-18 and 2018-19) of an impressive 2,000-episode run that began in 2002, Daly averaged 765,000 over viewers per night, according to Nielsen. Singh’s run over the subsequent two years (2019-20 and 2020-21) shed one-quarter of Carson’s audience, averaging 574,000 total viewers. What’s worse is that Singh didn’t start out so bad. Daly drew 726,000 viewers...

NBC and Lilly Singh will end her late-night program, “A Little Late With Lilly Singh,” after two years, the latest sign that TV networks are rethinking how to handle a widening array of wee-hours programs while viewing habits shift.
Singh has signed a first-look deal with Universal Television Alternative Studio, a division of Universal Studio Group, to develop unscripted projects. She also heads Unicorn Island Productions, and intends to focus on projects under that banner. “A Little Late” airs weeknights at 1:35 a.m., following “Tonight” with Jimmy Fallon and “Late Night” with Seth Meyers. NBC did not immediately announce whether another program would replace Singh’s, but the network is believed to be considering options other than talk shows.

NBC’s extremely late-night forays are coming to a close with the end of A Little Late With Lilly Singh.
The show, which airs at 1:30am, will be coming to an end with its second season and the network is moving out of original programming for the slot that it previously called a “creative playground”.
The move is a blow to the diversity of late-night television as Singh is the only woman hosting a show on a broadcast network, but it is unsurprising given the ratings attached to a show that airs so late. The final episode will air on Thursday June 3.
A Little Late with Lilly Singh launched in September 2019, a replacement for Last Call with Carson Daly, and followed The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers in the schedule. However, there was a large gap between seasons one and two due to...

For the second year in a row, “Schitt’s Creek” won for outstanding comedy series at the 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Writer-star-executive producer Dan Levy accepted the prize on behalf of the series.

Amber Ruffin exudes Big Capricorn Energy. Ambitious, tenacious and undeniably talented, the zany comedian — whose birthday is Jan. 9 — is carving her own path in a field that’s hard-pressed to give Black women their proper due.
As host of Peacock’s The Amber Ruffin Show, which has been nominated for a Writers Guild Award for Comedy/Variety Sketch Series, she’s the only Black woman with a late-night show currently on the air. Her infectious charm and sharp social commentary make her a TV fixture, so much so that NBC is testing her show out with a broadcast audience. The...

Amber Ruffin is getting a linear bow for her Peacock late-night show.
The Amber Ruffin Show will air in a 1:30am slot on NBC on Friday February 26 and March 5. It will take the slot of repeats of A Little Late with Lilly Singh, which does not generally air on Friday nights.
The move is a boon for the nascent late-night show, giving it a chance to find new viewers on the linear network.
It’s the second bit of good news today for Ruffin, who is also a writer and performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers, after the Television Academy reversed course and changed its plan to merge the late-night and sketch categories at this year’s Emmys. That move at least gives Ruffin a chance to break into the awards conversation, something that would have been much trickier if she was also competing with shows such as...

NBC has stocked its Peacock streaming-video hub with a handful of late-night-style series. Now it’s planning to try one of those programs on actual late-night TV.
“The Amber Ruffin Show,” a comedy-talk series that currently streams on Peacock on Friday nights, will get a limited run in the wee hours of two Saturday mornings on the NBC broadcast network. NBC will take the original Ruffin episodes that debut on Peacock on Friday, February 26, and Friday March 5, and air them at 1:30 a.m. on NBC, in place of repeats of “A Little Late with Lilly Singh.”
“Little Late” will continue to broadcast originals as expected, and will do so during the weeks of February 22 and March 1.
The move speaks to NBC’s broadening relationship with Ruffin, who has seen her profile rise since joining in 2014 the writing staff of “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” where she continues to work.

Like many internet commentators — and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ team itself — Lilly Singh is disappointed with the future VP’s February Vogue cover photo.
On Wednesday’s episode of A Little Late With Lilly Singh, the host took issue with the magazine for the lackluster image that was selected for the cover shot.
Upon first hearing the news that Harris would be gracing the February issue of Vogue, Singh said she was ecstatic. “I was like, this is amazing,” Singh said. “Representation? Uh, hello? Yes, please.”
But her reaction to the cover itself was less than thrilled. “When this photo was released, the internet ...
