- Sukhdev is a poor farmer who lives in Baddowali in Punjab, India, along with two step-brothers, Karamvir, and Channi, and a step-sister, Guddi. He is of marriageable age and his marriage is arranged with Gurjit, the sister of Kundan Singh. The two like each other and get engaged. But after the engagement Gurjit makes it clear that she would prefer that his step-siblings live elsewhere. Sukhdev is uncomfortable and breaks off the engagement and decides to bring the trio up on his own. He assists a local Tonga-driver, Dhanwant Singh, his wife, and daughter, Nimmi, in every possible way and arranges Karamvir and Nimmi's marriage at the time when Dhanwant is re-locating to Delhi. 15 years later Sukhdev goes to meet with Dhanwant to finalize the marriage of Karamvir and Nimmi, but is humiliated by Dhanwant, who now calls himself by the last name of Kang, and is a multi-millionaire. A crestfallen Sukhdev returns home to give the rest of the family the bad news. Karamvir goes to Delhi as a Dhobi and finds employment in the Kang family, meets with Nimmi, and finds out that her dad had misinformed her that he (Karamvir) had married someone else and re-located to Canada. Nimmi, who is resentful of the past, and is all set to get married to Pal Jindal, has a change of heart at the last minute and decides to marry Karamvir much to the chagrin of Dhanwant. The marriage takes place on the condition that Nimmi and Karamvir live with the Kang family, but Nimmi decides to put her foot down and refuses to leave her in-laws. The family then arrange Guddi's marriage with Harbhajan, the son of Subedar Kapoor Singh. Then acrimony and chaos is all set to invade their harmonious lives when Channi decides to wed Matto, who is none other than Kundan's daughter. Watch what conditions a vengeful Kundan lays down for the marriage of Matto and Channi.—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)
