This is what argentine film industry should do more
bachito199623 August 2019
A film for the masses, that's what i'm talking about. It's not just contenting the critics but the people. And this movie is a great example: great critic reviews and a great acceptance by the public. Don't lose the opportunity to watch it at the big screen, it's worth it.

Read first the book, then make your own conclusions
sangiorgiomt11 July 2021
La Odisea de los Giles is based on the novel "La Noche de la Usina" written by Eduardo Sacheri. The same writer who wrote the novel that inspired to make the Oscar winning film "The Secret in their Eyes".

I loved so much the book and I thought the movie would be a gem. But not. I understand that some things from the book are not possible to transport to the language of cinema. Still, there were some details of the book that were missing and could have made the movie a little bit more better, more with surprising moments.

I had the feeling that Ricardo Darín played as Darín. Boring. I couldn't believe his character of an ex fultball player (Perlassi). On the book I could feel so much the spirit of Perlassi. I could imagine what he was wearing, what he was thinking, even if it was not written on the book.

I honestly believe that Leonardo Sbaraglia could have been a better cast for the role.

If you read the book don't expect so much. If you didn't read the book, then is a nice film for a Sunday afternoon. Thanks.

English subtitles are available, so there is no excuse not to watch this funny underdog movie.
imseeg5 May 2020
A small village gets robbed of it's well earned money by a corrupt bank manager and the village people swear revenge.

Great underdog story of standing up against the bully. Funny as well. Simply a charming tale of locals, who bond together during a financial crisis. Ingenuous plot. Wonderful acting performances. Simply good fun to watch. 7.5 stars.

Outstanding Argentinian movie.
juani_rc2520 August 2019
La odisea de los giles is an outstanding comedy set in one of the most turbulent times of the Argentinian History.

It's imposible not to feel empathy with the characters, as they struggle with their lives, projects and the financial situation of Argentina in the early 2000.

The characters are a mix of Argentinian stereotypes, but all of them are really well devolved, fresh, funny, and stereotyped not in an excessive way.

Ricardo Darin takes the place of a dreamer man in the beginning and then as a grieving man, this change is superb and this could be one of his best roles in his career.

Such a good movie!!! The only problem is you will lose many jokes if you are not Argentinian. As an Argentinian, is a MUST! If you are not Argentinian, still watch it! But take in mind that you might not laugh on the parts where we die laughing!

Very Engaging
pwmoores-494442 March 2020
I saw this at the Glasgow Film Festival. It starts out like a feel good movie which you think will be a capper film before a tonal shift sends it darker. However it is always engaging and well acted by the end able cast. I enjoyed the film.

The best Argentinian movie of the year!
facundofr19 August 2019
Based on the 2001 crisis, the movie present us a group of very different people with one objective in common: revengeance, not revenge: revengeance against the manager of a bank who stole their savings. The film is a travel with those tender characters and their suffering and desire of revengeance. 9/10

Disappointing.
zoristtot22 June 2020
A technically well crafted and kind of engaging film, almost ruined by an extremely unoriginal and predictable plot. Argentina just keeps iterating the same old leftist fantasy, which gets pretty tiresome after so many times. It's still worth watching though.

Boring
joevanolo18 February 2020
One of the worst argentinean movies I had ever seen, flat, predictable, boring characters, no depth. Not a bad movie to see on a sunday but would never see it again or recommend it. I really dont get the score, Un cuento chino, 9 reinas, Relatos salvajes, Tiempo de valientes, etc. are all better. If you want to see a movie that is not going to give something to talk or remember after watching, then this is for you.

Very good...

"Heroic Losers" is a Comedy - Crime movie in which we watch a group of people trying to recover their money after it was stolen by the manager of their bank and another corrupted lawyer during the infamous Argentinian Corralito time.

I enjoyed this movie very much because it had a simple but interesting plot and contained some plot twists that made it even more interesting. In addition to this, the direction which was made by Sebastián Borensztein was good and he succeeded on presenting very well both the plot and his main characters in order for the audience to understand them and their actions. The interpretation of Ricardo Darín who played as Fermín Perlassi was very good and he made the difference. Other interpretations worth mentioning were Rita Cortese's who played as Carmen Largio, Chino Darín's who played as Rodrigo Perlassi and Luis Brandoni's who played as Antonio Fontana. To sum up, I have to say that "Heroic Losers" is a nice movie and I recommend you to watch it.

Great movie.
lucas_mrz18 January 2020
An entertaining dark comedy, very well paced, it never "drops", never gets slow, never gets boring. Great cast, great acting, very good script (the foreign watcher probably won't notice, but every dialogue is made in a "country/rural" jargon, which adds a lot in terms of authenticity and credibility).

My only critic is regarding the lack of explanation of the 2001 crisis (a simple, small explanation would've been enough) because that reduces the understanding of the foreign audience about the severity of the situation faced by the protagonists. But overall, a good film. Totally recommended.

The Social Role of Argentinian Film
mazzobr19 November 2019
This is not the first nor it will be the last Argentinian film to play the role of educating people that had been under economic distress. the art of Argentinian cinema consists of telling through filming Argentina's history offering at the same time entertainment, consciousness and fictitious solutions to social dramas. Ricardo Darin is an actor representative of this type of film without losing the art of interpretation. In 2000, the Corallito was a bank determination issued by Argentina's government blocking all accounts to withdraw more than 50 dollars day. It created a havoc on common people savings. The screenplay develops a story where a group of Argentinian workers collects their savings to create a cooperative but the money ended up in the hands of a bank operator. They will organize themselves to get the money back no just for them but to their small town needy people.

An Amazing Movie
luga-096663 October 2019
"La Odisea de los Giles" by Sebastian Borensztein is an Argentinian movie that hit the screen the 15 of August. The script is an adaptation of a book written by Eduardo Sacheri called "la noche de la Usina". The main actors are Ricardo Darin and Luis Brandoni, many well-known Argentinian actors perform as their supporting actors. The movie deals with a difficult time in the history of Argentina, an event known as "Corralito", which works as the topic of the film. The theme is an interesting one "what a group of people is capable of after they are deceived and a crisis strikes their country". The movie starts in a small town in Argentina where Fermin (Ricardo Darin), his wife and Fontana (Luis Brandoni) want to start a "cooperativa" with other neighbors from the same town. After they obtain the money they need, Fermin goes to the bank and is advised to do something. However, when an unexpected crisis knocks in their country's door, they lose all their money but when they find the responsible, they decide to take the law into their own hands and recover what belongs to them. In my opinion, the movie is very good. The characters work as a representation of how people in Argentina suffered and were affected by "corralito". Some viewers will feel identified and other will sympathize with the characters, the viewers can feel their anger, their helplessness, and more. Although the movie has the typical Argentinian humor, you will be glued to your chair wanting to know what will happen next. I recommend to watch this movie because It has a catching plot and an interesting development, and if you enjoy of a little bit of humor, you will find a good balance between humor, suspense and drama present in "La Odisea de los Giles".

INCREDIBLE!! Best Argentinian movie.
AgustinCesaratti19 October 2019
For a film based on historical facts and not on a big budget, it's very well done. The cast is incredible and they were lucky enough to have the best actors in Argentina. The VFX, music, cinematography and plot are very well done.

My tens and I hope it wins Best Foreign Film at the Oscars 2020.

Darin is a great actor but this story makes no sense
muratmihcioglu22 September 2022
I love Argentinean cinema. Maybe that's why I was expecting more from this. Sadly, the mechanics of the main story and the overall premise are way too problematic to allow us an enjoyable suspension of disbelief.

Without further ado, I wanna simply list the issues:

  • They wanna form a cooperative. Okay. But a cooperative for what? What's the business plan there? How come people of so different professions unite for a cooperative around the idea of renting some dormant, forgotten silos?

  • Why is there such a high rent for silos? They weren't in use already.

  • The main point of reference is how a particular economic crisis struck Argentina in 2001. But the crucial details of this are not explained. What I got was that withdrawing money from banks had become impossible or banned overnight. Okay. And the bank director who had early notice of this scammed these people. Okay. After learning of the details, why don't they just go to the authorities? Because even in that case they wouldn't get the money back, but what they want is the money? Not saying there is not a logic to why they take the initiative to target Manzi, but the social and financial background of the era just does not reflect in what is going on. There is a void there.

  • A man losing a wife, a son losing a mother... And they have good reason to hold Manzi responsible for that tragic death. So? Where's the outrage? Even after such an emotionally crucial turning point for the story, why don't we see any outbursts and "no games" kinda vitriol, revenge, hatred?

  • Half an hour into the movie, they know it was Manzi who got their money. They know where he lives and works. Basically, we got a dozen men furious over a huge scam, one which has cost dearly also in human life to a particular family. And what do they do? Just an Ocean's Eleven kinda plan? Really?

  • Why aren't these two sides clashing? Why don't the scammed people put on masks, kidnap Manzi, beat him up, make him tell the code, then get inside that damn vault and take all the money? Why are they so hell bent on opening what is essentially a huge box, by coming up with some unnecessarily complicated plan? Not a single cop was seen throughout the movie. If they are down with committing what is arguably a crime, what is holding them from kicking the living daylights out of this evil guy who has not even one body guard?

  • Why has Manzi hid all the stolen money and valuables inside that vault he had built in the countryside? Why has he not done the same thing at the office or home? From his perspective, what's the point of being so far from the treasure he apparently values the most?

  • If the whole idea is to get the money from the guy who stole it in the first place, why aren't they forcing a confrontation? It gets ridiculous at one point: They mess with the alarms of the vault so frequently that Manzi goes there mad several times, he opens the thing, gets inside, checks things... And what is the gang doing when this is happening?!? There, the vault is open!!! The guy is in there, alone, and you know it! Who cares if he has a gun, you can outnumber him, gas him, do whatever you like. Why are you trying to open that same vault when he is NOT there???

  • There is no logic to this. Hence, no real tension. A man versus a dozen men. That's it. Follow him, entrap him inside his vault, take the money and go away. Why does this film cease to develop its plot after the first half hour? Why are we watching a dozen adults pondering over how to open a giant box? How does that even socially connect to the political/financial backdrop???

As a teen, decades ago, I had seen the TV adaptation of the novel "Not A Penny More, Not A Penny Less". This is basically it, but much, much weaker.

I'm not just disappointed, but also a bit surprised that such a talent like Darin could accept to be the lead with such a malfunctioning script. The source material may be a fine novel, but what I just watched is far from matching the basic requirements of writing for cinema.

Saying this as a fan of both Darin and Argentinean cinema in general: This film's IMDb score is wildly overrated. Okay, the actors have done a fine job and there is entertainment value to the outcome. But such a structural problem to the story should not result in anything higher than a 6.

If what I saw on Rai3 tonight is the same thing all these people have watched, well, I just don't know what to say.

Had to be there!
NestorTheGreat25 October 2021
Corralito translated means playpen, or small pen. In use it usually means the small fenced yard where you heard your livestock before feeding, butchering, milking and/or grooming. A small boxed area where you herd all your future wealth. The Spanish title of the film: La Odisea de los Giles; literally means the Twits' Oddessey. For Argentine viewers, this film makes much more sense, and is heartfelt enjoyment to watch. Some things just cannot be translated.

The Argentine Government's plan to implement the "corralito" involved collecting all U$ currency in people's bank accounts and giving them worthless credit so that the lying politicians could theoretically pay off the external debt. A quick Wiki search will tell you that they didn't! The corruption was unparalleled and indescribable! Many hard working "twits" lost everything they had saved overnight! Except, of course, the bankers and those in the know. They had withdrawn their dirty money before the herding and also grabbed anybody else's that they could snatch! The anger spilled onto the streets and many lost their lives and livihoods!

This movie is part heist, part revenge, and sprinkled with humour and heart to tell a fictionalised story about a cooperative of businesses seeking revenge. It gives all who lost their fortunes to a handful of sociopaths a moment of joy!

Ricardo Darín, the best Argentine actor in decades, is again a standout! United with his son, playing his son, Chino, and Brandoni, another standout Argentine celebrity, the cast put in a great performance!

It's no Ocean's 11, but if you lived the atrocities committed by foreign economists and enterprises on the people of Argentina, you'd fall in love with this film as much as I have! Hopefully after viewing it'll give you the push to do a little digging on what happened to a great nation, more than once!

Familiar story structure. but still well worth watching
blott2319-125 January 2022
I've definitely seen a couple movies with a similar premise to Heroic Losers. In fact, there are elements of this plot that are remarkably similar to Tower Heist, a movie that I found extremely lackluster. The nice thing about this film is that it didn't lean too heavily into the comedy where it felt like they were trying too hard. Instead the plot plays out like a drama, but there is still a sprinkling of comedy because the characters are all quite entertaining. Also, the mere premise of a group of everyday blue collar people looking to pull a heist is inherently funny, and they do a good job of making it entertaining for the audience without becoming goofy or farcical. This is a simple, but well-constructed story that never lost me, as I was fully engaged in the characters and their story. So many of them show growth and development as the story progresses. Also, they all have their own unique personality, so I never once got confused over who was who.

I think the advantage Heroic Losers has is that the plot is naturally built to make you sympathetic for all the protagonists. You like them long before the movie ever asks you to take their side. These are not malicious men and women, but people you could see yourself befriending. Ricardo Darin is particularly engaging as the one who first brings all these people together, and he has some scenes that almost brought me to tears because he nailed the emotion so well. Admittedly, there isn't a lot of story to talk about in this film, because it is fairly straightforward, and follows a linear progression that you can often guess in advance. However, I was so invested in the characters and their mission that I could not look away. Heroic Losers is the kind of movie that could easily become comfort-viewing for me. It has a fun adventure story and enough interesting people that I was almost as engaged by this heist as I am by something like Ocean's 11.

A great and fun movie which depicts a not so funny historical moment
vitrack-112 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with most of the positive things said by other reviewers. The only thing I didn't like about the movie was that it borrowed/stole something from William Wyler's "How to Steal a Million" (1966). If you don't know what it is, try to watch that great film.

This film is some propaganda about the nobility of poor people
sleons18 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film only has a compelling first act. There are absolutely no characters, in the sense that none of them are struggling with anything. Since they are poor there isn't a single decision that isn't done with the most ammount of dignitty and nobility. The film is filled with plot holes, there is a heist that is resolved in the stupidest way possible. Basically half of the film is this group of noble savages trying to figure out how to turn off a battery.
