Ranveer Singh & Boman Irani's jordaar performances stand tall in this collapsed satire.
SAMTHEBESTEST13 May 2022
Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022) : Movie Review -

Female foeticide isn't a new topic for today's audience; it was back then, but definitely not in this internet generation. Even the topic of sex determination during pregnancy isn't new for us, but yes, it's true that we don't use this topic regularly in cinema. There are many episodes of the same in TV serials like Crime Petrol and Savdhaan India because they are inspired by true events. In films, you need entertainment, and maybe that's the main reason why many filmmakers didn't choose this subject for a feature film. Well, from now I can say that Divyang Thakkar's Jayeshbhai Jordaar is one honest attempt, but is it enough? Not really. The film has a good concept and also manages to present it in a satirical way, but the weak writing in the second half causes an unexpected collapse.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar tells a story of Jayesh Patel (Ranveer Singh), who is married to Murdra (Shalini Pandey), but they haven't got an heir. Jayesh's father, Ramlal (Boman Irani), is a proud chief of the village who has male ego transmitted from his ancestors, and he wants an heir to carry forward the male legacy in the village. He forces Mudra and Jayesh to have miscarriages, not twice or thrice, but six times. Finally, they have a girl named Nisha, who turns out to be a pure firecracker. Mudra is pregnant again, but this time Jayesh has made up his mind to have a girl child, and how he battles his father and the entire male-dominated environment of his village is all that forms the rest of the story.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar had a good first half. It's funny and engaging for like 50 minutes and then drags in the second half, which is about 70 minutes long. The climax portion is written poorly, and that's the biggest reason behind this unexpected collapse. The film has many loops here and there, but you overlook them until the narrative looks humorous, but the last 20 minutes have so many outdated cliches that they cannot be overlooked. Divyan's writing puts a full stop to his own progress, which has failed to reach its actual potential.

Ranveer Singh is one of the finest actors from the young brigade of Bollywood, and he continues the good flow with this film. He is coming from a fantastic performance in 83, and Jayeshbhai Jordaar keeps the flow going for him. His accent and body language are notable, but there are shortcomings to his character that could be blamed on the writer. The second best performer in the film is none other than Boman Irani. He is flawless as Ramlal. The only truly deadly character in the film is his only. The debutant Shalini Pandey looks decent as Mudra, while her daughter Nisha, aka Jia, is hysterical. Ratna Pathak Shah has nothing new to offer and the supporting cast of Samay Raj Thakkar, Ragi Jani, Puneet Issar and others is nothing impressive.

The film has a total of four songs; one of them appears in the end credits. Firecracker is quite a fancy and foot-tapping number, which keeps the mood alive with small glimpses throughout the narrative until it appears in its full version at the end. "Jordaar" comes a while in the climax portion, but it is surely the best song from the album. The other situational song, "Dheere Dheere Seekh Jaunga," bores you a little, but not fully. Jayeshbhai Jordaar has got a jordaar but the screenplay is lame. A few of the dialogues have subtle meaning, while some are not suitable for the family audience. That "Pappi" (Kiss) idea is so terrible, and how horrendous it goes in the final scene is even worse.

It's not that bad a film for a debutant, but it certainly shows the faults of Divyang. Rather, it exposes them. You can't expect a family entertainer to have such kind of language and such vulgar references to prove a hard-hitting social message because they aren't used to these urban materials. It's neither a single-screen audience film nor a multiplex-driven drama; it just wanders cluelessly somewhere in between. Divyang Thakkar's idea was great, but not his execution. He lacked the directorial skills that were needed to carry this film, but before that he lacked those writing skills that could have made Jayeshbhai Jordaar a strong film on paper. Overall, it's a misjudged script that should have been checked again and again before going on the floor. Ranveer Singh and Boman Irani's performances might please you, while the film will go down in the memory lane as a half-baked product.

Has its moments , but mostly ordinary!
Biswas_13 May 2022
The topic of this film has been explored N number of times in Bollywood so its high time they move on to a newer social topic. I really admire Bollywood making films on social topics as Compared to South who spoonfeed those over the top trash masalas which only promote negativity and violence with nothing to learn. But Bollywood must know, some topics are already explored and need no further explanation. Jayeshbhai is exactly that problem.

This film definitely has its moments but they are few and far apart. Humor barely works . You see a film like Mimi, another terrific film from Bollywood that got immense love solely because surrogacy was a new topic brought in Bollywood and at the same time, it was humorous. Not in case of JJ.

Mostly the film failed to hold on to my attention for most parts as it was bland and boring with nothing worth mentioning. Only in the latter half of the 2nd half we get to see some good moments which is why I give it stars.

Performances are something to talk about. Ranveer is the most versatile actor in bollywood now and ya he is not any product of nepotism. He does his part brilliantly. His on screen daughter is the star of the film with her electrifying performance. Shalini Pandey has limited role. Boman Irani also excels in his part. Rest all have done a great job.

Overall, I doubt whether this is a theatre watch. This film could better be made as a skit or released directly on OTT. No songs that are good and history tells songs do 50% of the promotion job which in this case did not happen. Should excel on OTT.

The story of this film is lacking in quality and fails to engage the audience. The screenplay is poorly constructed and lacks substance, resulting in a disappointing viewing experience. The execution of the film is subpar, failing to bring the story to life in a compelling way.

While the performances of Ranveer and Boman Irani are underwhelming, Shalini Pandey and Jia Vaidya deliver commendable performances, showcasing their talent and adding some merit to the film.

Overall, it is best to forget that this movie was ever made, as it fails to meet the expectations of the audience and falls short in various aspects.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar has its flaws and is not perfect but overall, It consists of drama, social message, comedy, thrill, humor, emotion, beautiful moments and performances, and of course, originality which we all know is rare to find nowadays so I suggest you watch the film and decide for yourself rather than believing negative reviews. Highly recommended! 😄

Jayeshbhai Jordaar Is Sometimes Farcical, But Always Heartfelt
shefali-5924413 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If the Ayushmann Khurrana sub-genre of broad-stroked, social messaging movies and the Rajkumar Hirani sub-genre of feel-good, smiling-through-tears movies had a baby, it would be Jayeshbhai Jordaar. Debutant writer-director Divyang Thakkar creates a sanitized, aimable, sometimes bordering on farcical but always heartfelt saga of a closet feminist who decides to rebel against his awful, overbearing Sarpanch father and protect his wife and unborn daughter.

The story is set in Pravingarh, a fictitious hamlet in Gujarat ruled by the Sarpanch, who is such a neanderthal that when a young girl complains that boys are harassing her, he orders the women in the village to stop bathing with soap because obviously when women smell fresh, men lose control. The Sarpanch's wife isn't much better. She prays obsessively that Jayesh's wife Mudra will deliver a son - their first child, Siddhi, is a girl who she has little affection for. In one scene, she looks at Siddhi and says: Ghagra paltan nahi chahiye. So when Jayesh finds out that Mudra is going to deliver a girl again, he has no choice but to run away. Jayesh and Mudra become perhaps Hindi cinema's first couple to elope after marriage and with two children - one still a foetus.

While there are many big record-breaking box office movies like KGF, Bahubali etc. This is a low-key film which will touch our hearts and stay there. Jayeshbhai's character is so wholesome and it feels so great to see that he fights hard to bring her girl child into the world. Not just an ordinary hero but the real-life action hero. Shalini has done a fabulous job in her debut and I think she will go a long way. The songs, the characters and the comic timing, the dialogues, everything fits perfectly in the movie. Talking about such an important issue, female foeticide is something that I was looking forward to from Bollywood and I am happy that it has been portrayed so beautifully by Divyang Thakkar that too in his first film. Way to go, buddy!!
