The boost this show needed.

Warning: Spoilers
This season seemed to be ebbing and flowing, not heading anywhere. Then bam, suddenly the show is back on track. Next season things are going to get real. The battle for leader of the pack looks like it will be a bloody one. Kind of glad to see the back of Smurf, her character was becoming real irritating. This show after all is story of Jay's journey, and Jay's journey took a major turn in this episode. Can't wait for next season.

Great episode to say goodbye to smurf

Warning: Spoilers
Even though it was kind of predictable, the episode was really well developed. It is a great end for smurt, a strong woman, a leader who lived a life in the way she wanted and die almost the way she planned. Can't wait to see where the show goes without one of the show's stars. Rest in peace Smurf.

Live by the sword, die by the sword

Warning: Spoilers
One of the most action packed and character developing episode, next to a few others, including the one where J killed his Latino lady companion. As the seasons passed, we have witnessed J climbing the ladder and gaining his family's respect, evolving from a scarred but witty young man into a cold-blooded leader. As for Smurf, she has completed her part in developing this show, and was no longer needed. I am sure many viewers had connected with her, but it is time to let go. She had lived the way she wanted, and did everything to die the way she wanted. Begging, clinging, shooting, still hustling to get her way. Great experience I want more!

Bye Bye

Warning: Spoilers
Smurf went out with a bang even though it wasn't exactly as she had planned. You definitely gotta give props to Ellen Barkin as she is an amazing actress. I personally would've liked it better if her plan had worked and Pope was also dead because he creeps me out. But I understand why he didn't. I'm so looking forward to seeing what happens with J in the future. I'm thinking the series will end with a showdown between him and Pope. There can only be one boss and as much as I love them neither Craig nor Deran is smart or strong enough.

Finally the weak link of the show is gone

Warning: Spoilers
Ever since season 2, Smurf's character was just annoying and useless. The actress' acting is horrendous and I think the show can only go uphill from here.

Ghosts

Warning: Spoilers
Well, we all figured the show would find a way to keep Smurf alive and yet her last hurrah ended in a way we didn't predict: by gunfire.

Give Ellen Barkin credit for a phenomenal scene on her way out, but allowing Smurf to shoot at henchmen and not die by their gun other than a wound is a little absurd.

Uneven and Inauthentic, the opposite of Animal Kingdom's style.

Warning: Spoilers
S4 E8 Ambo was one of the greatest episodes of the season (and the series) and tonight's episode "Ghosts" was the weakest. For the first time, I enjoyed the flashbacks more than the present-day scenes. I wish Smurf went out in a blaze of glory. Her screaming and foaming at the mouth for Pope to kill her felt inauthentic. Then, Deran just casually surrenders his gun to her? Having J kill her ties in too conveniently to S2 when J promised to mercy kill her, if needed, so she won't waste away like old sick Manny, and also it's forcing the unnecessary but ongoing tension between J and Uncle Pope. Would Pope really choose a new love affair with an unstable drug addict over his own nephew, his twin's son?! In S3, he gave Deran a speech about family first, when Deran formed his own crew (Colby, Ox, etc.). This was an illogical uneven episode. A hardcore survivalist would have no safeguards for a back tunnel leading into his stockpile of weapons and gold?! Despite all of that, Shawn Hatosy and Finn Cole turned in raw, brilliant performances, as always. Jake Weary (Deran) and Ben Robson (Craig) emotions did all the acting for them. You could feel the shock and sadness from Craig and the relief or freedom feeling from Deran who always wondered what their lives would've been like if born to a different Mom, plus he thinks his boyfriend being-an-informant-secret died with Smurf. It didn't. J knows.

Smurf was the best part of the show! It's over for me with her gone.
