“The Crown” could well bow out in style on home soil, with the final outing of the show leading the list of nominees for the 2024 BAFTA TV and TV Craft awards, announced Wednesday.
Netflix’s hit royal drama — which came to an end last year after six seasons — landed eight nominations in total, including for Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville and Salim Daw in the performance categories. However, it missed out for drama series (an award it has been nominated for three times previously).
Just behind “The Crown” and also a Netflix production, the apocalyptic “Black Mirror” episode “Demon 79” earned seven nominations, including limited drama and leading actress for Anjana Vasan.
Further down in a tight group of frontrunners, BBC dramas “Happy Valley” and “The Sixth Commandment and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” each have six nominations. Sarah Lancashire’s leading actress nomination for “Happy Valley” could see...

There are few bad days that can’t be remedied by watching an episode of Would I Lie To You?
This award-winning BBC panel show has been making us laugh for over 15 years thanks to hilarious repeat performances from the likes of Bob Mortimer and Rhod Gilbert, and the top-tier chemistry between team captains Lee Mack and David Mitchell and host Rob Brydon.
It’s created so many legendary funny moments that picking a favourite is almost impossible, but here are the Would I Lie To You? stories that have gone down in TV history:
16. Henning Wehn Goes Missing in Morocco
Henning Wehn appears to have gone to the Kevin Bridges School of Storytelling (more on that later) – his yarns have a similarly scatter-brained approach that are pleasingly impossible to predict. Here he claims Interpol listed him as a missing person when he went on a bike ride in Spain...

Bill Bailey has shared a touching tribute to Sean Lock.
The comedian posted a throwback photo of the pair out on a country walk 19 months after Lock died of cancer.
Bailey captioned the photo on Twitter: “Some days I still can’t quite believe he’s gone. Today is one of those days.”
He capped the post: “Miss you Sean old pal.”
Bailey participated in a charity walk one year after Lock’s death, raising more than £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support alongside Lee Mack and Lock’s family.
Last year, Bailey said that Lock was still cracking jokes in his final days. “Even in his last few days, we were still having a laugh, still joking, still coming up with ideas,” he said.
“We had great conversations. I brought in my guitar and sang him his favourite Johnny Cash songs.”

Exclusive: Jim Biederman, who produced Kids in the Hall and Jodi Lennon, who produced At Home with Amy Sedaris, are teaming up and have struck a first-look deal with Truly Original.
It comes after the pair worked with the Banijay-owned production company on The CW’s comedy panel show Would I Lie To You?. Biederman was showrunner and exec producer and Lennon was co-exec producer and writer.
The deal will help Truly Original, which also makes a number of The Real Housewives shows, move further into comedic unscripted series in the narrative, sketch, variety and game show genres.
The pair will work with Head of Development Chachi Senior and SVP Michelle Schiefen.
Biederman and Lennon have known each other for more than two decades from the New York comedy and sketch scene with Biederman’s other credits including The Tom Green Show, The Whitest Kids U’ Know and The Howard...

Brad Schwartz has been officially named as President, CW Entertainment.
This comes less than a day after Deadline revealed that he was the main candidate for the top programming role following Nexstar’s acquisition of the network.
Former Pop TV chief Schwartz will be responsible for programming strategy, creative and brand development, and day-to-day operations of The CW Network.
He will report to Dennis Miller, President, The CW Network.
As Deadline said yesterday, Schwartz, the man behind Pop TV’s Emmy-winning Schitt’s Creek, makes sense to lead the new look CW, which will have an increasing focus on unscripted shows and fewer, cheaper scripted series.
Miller said that one of the reasons he was hired was because he knows “how to develop and acquire hits with limited resources, nurture talent, and broaden the appeal of diverse media assets”.
He also recently consulted at The CW on long-term strategy and programming...

Last month, Mock The Week was cancelled after 17 years on air. The satirical comedy was only one of a flurry of modern panel shows featuring teams of comedians, spawning from the format used in Have I Got News For You that emerged during the nineties and noughties. Taking cues from long-running Hignfy which hit TV screens in 1990, popular series such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks and the anarchic, absurd Shooting Stars were followed by the likes of Qi, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Would I Lie To You?, Celebrity Juice and, of course, Mock The Week. But with ratings plummeting and cancellations abounding, is it high time the genre called it a day?
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
These shows were initially a great way to finish off your evening after a long hard day at school or work, just like a late night chat show helps to wind our American friends down after the watershed.

Not long after the introduction of the reality and competition program Emmy categories in the early 2000s, the TV academy decided to begin honoring the work of those shows’ presenters by establishing the Best Reality/Competition Host category in 2008. Over the years, the nominees here have hailed from game and talent shows of all kinds, including those structured around dancing, singing, fashion, and food.
Included on the 2022 ballot list below is reigning champion RuPaul of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” who has triumphed on all six of his consecutive bids for the VH1 series. Others seeking repeat victories include Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum (“Making the Cut;” formerly of “Project Runway”), Jane Lynch (“Weakest Link;” formerly of “Hollywood Game Night”), and Jeff Probst (“Survivor”).
Voting for nominations in this category is not open to the entire academy membership, but rather restricted to members of eight peer groups: casting directors, daytime programming, performers,...

“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” pushed back on right-wing claims that one of its segments proves there was voter fraud in the 2020 election, saying their use of the show as evidence is “horses—.”
In a lengthy Twitter thread Thursday, “Last Week Tonight” addressed “new viewers” of the show who encountered it through conservative users that used a November 2019 segment to push President Trump’s voter fraud claims.
“First: sorry we swear so much! But second: the way people are using that segment is horses—,” the show tweeted. “If you watch our segment through to the end, you’ll notice that we say the biggest vulnerability is if a state uses direct-recording electronic voting machines, or DREs, especially those without a paper trail.”
As regular viewers of “Last Week Tonight” would expect, there was a lot more copiously researched material to come. The segment showed an example of a journalist...

Donald Trump again tweeted a baseless conspiracy theory about Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough, again suggesting that he was involved in a murder. But what’s revealing is the ho-hum reaction to the President’s wild claims.
Instead of trending, the tweet, like dozens of others the past few days, barely even registered. On Tuesday morning, much of the media’s attention has been on the Supreme Court oral arguments in a case on congressional efforts to obtain Trump’s tax returns, while members of the White House coronavirus task force testify on Capitol Hill.
Trump’s tweet probably would not even get any attention if he were a private citizen and not President, as it is a claim made with no evidence.
He’s raised it several times before, but probably not as directly as he did Tuesday.
Trump tweeted, “When will they open a Cold Case on the...

“The Talk” co-host Sharon Osbourne admitted to having once fired her rock star husband Ozzy’s assistant for failing to find the humor in being forced to run into a burning building.
Osborne shared the story last week on BBC’s “Would I Lie to You?,” a program where celebrities share embarrassing stories while the opposing team guesses which are true and which are made-up.
This story, which you can watch Osbourne tell above, happened to be true.

The fire began one “chilly Christmas night,” she recalled after she and Ozzy lit a candle they’d been gifted and went to bed shortly thereafter. They awoke to the sound of their fire alarm started going off.
Sharon said she when she went downstairs, she found Ozzy, whose arm “on fire” as well as “half his hair.

Monday’s 30th-anniversary edition of the Rainforest Fund benefit concert at New York’s Beacon Theater featured an incredible lineup that included Bruce Springsteen, Sting, James Taylor, John Mellencamp, Debbie Harry, and Shaggy. But it was the Eurythmics that managed to steal the show with their three-song set of “Would I Lie to You?,” “Here Comes the Rain Again,” and “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).”
Amazingly, they hadn’t played any of those songs since putting the group on indefinite hiatus in 2005. Annie Lennox hasn’t even toured as...
