The usual complaints but not bad
Jackbv12323 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Once again the story seems to depend on overly used themes from other Christmas movies. A contest which ends up being between the two leads. So what else is new? There is one slightly different aspect which is a flaw in itself. Holly, the female lead, can't bake to save her life. She is a food stylist. She's so bad baking that she doesn't know when to use eggs and when not. But in a few short days she learns and becomes competitive with the best in the town. Did I mention that she has also applied for her "dream job" in far away New York. You can usually say that adherence to reality is tenuous in these movies, but this time they went too far with a ridiculous premise. Also there's very little tension or highs and lows in this story because we can all see where it is going. The climax deviates slightly in a couple details from the expected, but still not that much.

Speaking of climax, to me it fell flat. It happened, and the characters seemed flat responding to it. Oh yeah, she will completely change her plans and not think twice about it.

I didn't care for most of the acting. I got very tired of Loretta Devine. Part of that was her voice, but she didn't seem natural either. I've seen Greyston Holt before and he and some of the supporting actors were OK. I totally didn't remember ever seeing Adeline Kane before, but after looking at her profile, I've seen her twice. (I didn't even notice her as being on Seal Team and totally forgot the movie with her opposite Penavega.). She's beautiful and she fit the character of Holly OK, but she also had no spark. She and Holt fit well together, but again, no spark.

Despite all my complaints, it wasn't flat out bad. Just more of the same during a season of wall-to-wall Christmas movies on at least four different channels, some 24/7.

BTW: it's hilarious how many movies get at least one review calling a Hallmark movie one from Lifetime, or vice versa. Look at the cover pic. This one is Lifetime and theirs has bottom third section a solid color(I think always blue) with the movie title in it. Hallmark usually has just a thin solid strip with "Hallmark" in it. A lot of their movies are pretty similar, but Lifetime is more likely to stand out as different once in a while.

I totally disliked the lead female.

Warning: Spoilers
I love Christmas romance movies and watching Loretta Devine was truly delightful, so it's a must watch just for her. However, I deducted points because of the female lead. She was rude, opinionated and judgmental.

Right off the bat she was rude to the male lead for no reason at all. For the life of me I couldn't understand why they had her character so head strong and opinionated regarding the bakery and keeping it the the way it was and who owns it when One, she no longer lived in the town. Two, she can't bake. I'm all for strong independent and intelligent female leads, but she just came off as opinionated and judgemental, all within the first few minutes, without any reason. She never fully recovered for me. (Pulling out my soapbox) I'm kinda over this type of female lead if it can't be balanced with actual intelligence, charm and kindness or at the very least respect. I'm also tired of the standard boy meets girl, girl is totally rude to boy and have all these unnecessary conflicts created by girl and fall in love or vice versa, just to fill up space in a movie. I would like more boy meets girl, girl and boy mutually like each other, build a relationship of mutual respect and fall in love. (Putting up soapbox)

I adored the male lead. He totally carried the scenes they shared. The rest of the cast was solid. Fyi, the only reason I have one review is because I just figured out how to.

Awful acting

I enjoy the sweet holiday movies, but the acting is just awful. Can you please improve on that. The lead actress is so boring and emotionless, it destroyed some of the cute scenes.

Sweet Christmas
allmoviesfan15 October 2023
Notice no one ever wears gloves when taking cookies out of the oven? Not just in 'A Sweet Christmas Romance' but all the Christmas movies on Hallmark and Lifetime that are baking themed!

That aside, A Sweet Christmas Romance - starring Australia's Adelaide Kane and Greyston Holt - is set at a bakery in a small town in Maine. The original owner of said bakery is retiring and moving to Alaska, and there is uncertainty about whether it will be sold off or whether someone will take over running.

Enter Holly (Kane) a food stylist from New York City and Brad (Holt), a Florida refugee.

If you've seen even just one of these festive films, you don't need me to tell you that sparks fly between these two. Their chemistry is good, and the movie trundles along at a gentle pace, a slow burn romance between the two leads, with a handful of the usual tropes making an appearance.

Not the best Lifetime Christmas movie ever, but also far from the worst. An easy watch, and an enjoyable one.

Pretty but boring

I like Adelaide - she's a good actress and above the usual Hallmark standard. She and Greyston Holt make an acceptable couple. But this baking competition story lacks substance. Should have saved the two for a better story.

I enjoyed it but.......
jnh-123-74678630 November 2019
As a New Zealander who now lives in Australia and knows about pavlovas (long has the controversy gone on about just who invented it) I do hope Brad wasn't planning on serving up the one he made days before Christmas, on Christmas Day. Maybe a day after it was made it would be OK but not after several. It would have been a mushy mess by then. Might still taste almost OK but would not present well. This was a glaring mistake for me but all in all I enjoyed the movie, the acting and the storyline. Not a bad way to spend 90 minutes,

One romance that doesn't hit the sweet tooth enough
TheLittleSongbird27 October 2020
Actually really wanted to like 'A Sweet Christmas Romance' more. Love Christmas. Lifetime have proven more than once that they can do decent Christmas films, and that is including in their very variable 2019 output. The premise sounded quite sweet. And was very intrigued in seeing Adelaide Kane again, best known to me as being one of the best things about the generally disappointing final season of 'Once Upon a Time'. So it did have potential.

Which it didn't do enough with. The premise at first seemed like a change of pace but very quickly became very ordinary and lacking in spark. 'A Sweet Christmas Romance' has its moments and good things, have very rarely considered a Lifetime Christmas film irredeemable and it takes a lot for me to consider one or any film/show etc that. It also has too many very big flaws that sadly outweigh the good things. It could have been a decent inoffensive watch, but to me 'A Sweet Christmas Romance' was mediocre and mostly doesn't hit the sweet tooth enough while also at times being too sickly.

Shall start with 'A Sweet Christmas Romance's' good things. It looks professional and decently made, the scenery is attractive at least and complemented well by the never drab or static photography. The music isn't as intrusive as can be the case with Lifetime (though Hallmark actually do it worse).

Greyson Holt does what he can with his overused stereotype of a character, and manages to make him charming and not stiff. Loretta Devine is going to divide, and has divided, people, on paper her performance sounded like one that would have gotten on my nerves but count me in as another person who felt that she became the best performance of the film and gave it some kick when she appeared.

Kane however was a disappointment. This is yet another character of all my Lifetime/Hallmark etc Christmas film viewings where the female lead has negative character traits exaggerated to an insufferable degree, and Kane's performance is a mess of trying too hard and at other times being dull. The chemistry between her and Holt does have moments where it is obvious they somehow care for each other, but it could have done with more spark and that would have been helped by the relationship itself being fleshed out a lot more and not evolving at too fast a rate. The direction is get the job done without distinction in quality.

The writing overall is pretty much a mess. Very cheesy and stilted often and the sentimentality at times gets sickly. The story is paper thin, very predictable, pretty slow and often contrived with not enough warmth or charm. Not to mention the very that's it abrupt ending that is at odds completely with what came before.

Overall, lacklustre. 4/10

A waste of a good start.

Warning: Spoilers
"A Sweet Christmas Romance" has an unusual twist on the standard Christmas baking movie plot. In this version of this common story, a young woman competes with a group of strangers to take over a local bakery run by the town matron. The main character, Holly, is played well by Adelaide Kane who has spent a long time in New York but is from the small Maine town where the story takes place. Her competitor is the film's Hot Guy, Brad, who is portrayed by Greyston Holt. Holt doesn't have to do much besides be handsome and smile. That's ok though. This film doesn't need performances by the romantic leads. They can be regular people. Loretta Devine as Mrs. Rose steals the show as the proprietor of the bakery. She has all the exaggerated charm your grandmother has. Being from the south, I felt like I recognized her mannerisms from my own family.

Brad is a chef at a French restaurant that makes fancy desserts such as Pavlova. The film actually describes what Pavlova is if you're curious. Nothing so fancy is made in the contest, but that's ok. Fans of the Great British Baking Show may recognize the familiar manner in which the desserts are judged. About halfway through the movie, the film stops with its attention to how the food is prepared during the baking contest.

There is some compensation for this when Brad and Holly prepare different dishes during their date nights. Their interactions in these moments is heartfelt and appreciated. You get the feeling that these two are falling in love rather than being driven together entirely by plot contrivance. What is contrived is the sudden ending. It really ruined the whole experience for me. The film was doing so well at creating a real, human story to throw it all away for a super happy ending.

Terrible
hlg-1487523 November 2019
I love a good holiday movie, but the acting was not great, and did no one else notice that the bakers, including the two leads, wore THE SAME CLOTHES for what was supposed to be like 5 separate days of the baking competition? The "judges" had fresh outfits, but the bakers didn't. It was so distracting.

Hallmark can do better than this.
gordonb-5958722 November 2019
We really enjoy the Hallmark movies. Sure, they are very predictable and if you a few minutes while you run and get a snack, it's easy to pick up the plot when you get back. That being said, this one was one of the worst we seen. Actors and actresses were annoying and the story just totally unbelievable. Interesting that one reviewer thought Loretta Devine was the best part of the show. We thought just the opposite. Way over the top with her acting and reciting lines. Nice to see new faces in the stable of Hallmark performers, but I know they can do better.

Awful
fleamom12 November 2019
I tend to love schmaltzy Hallmark movies around the Christmas holiday season. You tend to see sane actors over and over again, but this movie contained many new faces. The best part of the movie was Loretta Devine, and the rest if it was truly awful. The acting was terrible, particularly the female lead. Wooden, self conscious, unbelievable performance. The male lead was only slightly better. Unbelievable story line. Spare yourself the agony of watching this train wreck.
