We're now just one week away from Joker: Folie à Deux arriving in theaters and, despite this being 2024's only DC movie, excitement seems oddly muted among comic book fans.
There are those who feel Joker is a movie that should have been left well alone, while others find the prospect of a musical just too off-putting. Warner Bros. has largely kept that out of the sequel's marketing campaign but it's no secret that Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga will be busting out some tunes together.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips justified the decision to make this sequel a musical after the grounded nature of the 2019 movie.
"[Arthur] had issues. Clearly. But, there’s a light, a beauty, and a romance inside of him," the filmmaker explained. "It was something Joaquin and I talked about early on; yes, he’s out of step with the world.

Just one week remains until the release of Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the 2019 film Joker. This installment takes place two years after the first movie, featuring Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role, alongside the addition of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
Given that the franchise is only loosely inspired by the comics, Lady Gaga revealed several months ago that her portrayal of the character will be uniquely her own.
This statement elicited mixed reactions from fans, with some arguing that if she’s not going to embody the essence of Harley Quinn, there’s no point in calling herself that, while others expressed excitement about what Lady Gaga has to offer.
Recently, Lady Gaga sat down with Jake’s Takes to promote the upcoming film, and one of her comments once again sparked a flurry of reactions. When asked by Hamilton how her character would respond upon seeing a guy named Batman,...

A week stands between us and the release of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ a sequel to ‘Joker’ released in 2019. The movie picks up two years after the events of the first movie and sees Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role, with a new addition of Lady Gaga who will portray Harley Quinn.
Considering that the franchise is only loosely based on the comics, Lady Gaga revealed several months ago that her version of the character will be her own.
This statement alone proved polarizing reactions from the fans, with some claiming that there’s no use calling herself Harley Quinn if you’re not going to be Harley Quinn and some fans stating that they are looking forward to seeing what Lady Gaga has in store for them.
Now Lady Gaga recently sat down with Jake’s Takes to promote the upcoming movie and one of her statements once again provoked tons of comments.

Lady Gaga is opening up about the inspiration behind her Joker: Folie à Deux companion album titled Harlequin.
The actress-singer recently spoke to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 about finding a balance between herself and her character Lee, aka Harley Quinn, for the album, which will be released Friday and include 13 tracks.
“I think that for me, this idea of dual identities was always something that was a part of my music-making,” Gaga explained. “I was always creating characters in my music, and when I made Lee for Joker, she just really had this profound effect on me. The film had so much music in it, so much music that I love, and I was able to discover the character through the story, through the music that we did live every day as well as dance and the costumes and the makeup. So I kind of had this deep experience...

Bruce Wayne is still a child in Joker and Joker: Folie à Deux, so the movies naturally take place in a period before Batman. But how would Arthur Fleck react if he came face-to-face with the real Batman?
Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips has a few thoughts on the matter. “I think Arthur would be in awe of the alpha male that is Batman. I really do,” Phillips told IGN. “I think Arthur would look up and appreciate it. I think he’d be in awe of that.”
Phillips believes “Arthur always had a fascination with men at ease, and he is not a man at ease. [Robert De Niro’s] Murray Franklin in the first movie was a man at ease. He probably saw the guys he worked with as men at ease, and that was the one thing that Arthur could never be was a man at ease.

This weekend is shaping up to be a rather quiet one at the box office, with two new releases, The Wild Robot and Megalopolis, coming out that no one thinks are going to set the world on fire. Indeed, while Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was a smash hit early this month, the rest of September had been loaded with bomb after bomb, with Transformers One having an especially underwhelming opening last weekend, where it lost to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in its third week.
Box office forecasters expect The Wild Robot to make about $25 million this weekend and take the top spot. But, I gotta say, I’m not so sure. The Wild Robot is a terrific movie, and I fully agree with our man Steve Seigh’s rave review (read it here). But Paramount and Dreamworks made a huge mistake scheduling two robot-driven animated movies so close together, and Wild Robot and Transformers One...

"Joker: Folie á Deux" — the highly-anticipated sequel to Todd Phillips' first "Joker" film that drew totally chaotic reactions when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival — features Lady Gaga's first turn as the legendary DC Comics character Harleen Quinzel. So, how did the pop star and actor get involved with Phillips' project in the first place? It all has to do with Bradley Cooper.

In Joker: Folie à Deux, Arthur Fleck is institutionalized at Gotham’s Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his crimes as the Joker. There, he finds love with Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga, and also the “music that’s always been inside him.”

Joker: Folie à Deux is the upcoming sequel to 2019's Joker, a smash hit Batman spinoff starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill wretch who becomes Gotham City's clown prince of crime. In Folie à Deux, he'll meet Harley Quinn, the love of his life, and together they will make beautiful, demented music.
Although director Todd Phillips has gone back and forth on whether Folie à Deux is actually a musical or not, there will definitely be singing in it. Pop star Lady Gaga is playing Harley Quinn, after all, and you don't let a set of pipes like those go to waste. Gaga is even releasing a companion album for the movie called Harlequin, to come out on September 27. She dropped a snippet of one song, "The Joker," on social media:

Lady Gaga has previewed a new song from her forthcoming LP, Harlequin, out Sept. 27. The album is a companion piece to her film Joker: Folie à Deux, a musical of sorts in which the singer plays Harley Quinn.
Gaga shared a clip of the dramatic tune on Instagram along with a video shot in the Louvre museum in Paris, where her character defaces the Mona Lisa with red lipstick. “There’s always a Joker,” she wrote in the caption. Although she did not clarify the song’s title, it appears to be titled “The Joker.

Producer Christine Vachon has been reflecting on Joaquin Phoenix’s reported exit from Todd Haynes’ latest film, days before filming.
The fallout continues to unfurl following Joaquin Phoenix’s reported decision to walk out on Todd Haynes’ latest project just days before production was set to commence.
Hundreds of people are said to have suddenly found themselves out of work when the film lost its star, shortly before cameras were set to roll. Given the desperately short amount of time to find a replacement – and the fact that the movie was supposedly conceived by Phoenix himself – nothing could be done in terms of finding a stand-in for the actor, and the production collapsed.
Knowing how these things work, it’s likely that some folks have found themselves quite out of pocket as well.
Stories have surfaced in the weeks since, detailing a similar pattern of behaviour from Phoenix, including the...

Could you imagine an Oscars ceremony without the glitz, glamour and a heavy dose of pop stardom? Can you imagine the ratings?
Well, the Oscars could get much more musical. This awards season, brace yourself for a “pop star era,” with music icons such as Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande all competing to receive acting attention from the Academy Awards, and in the same supporting actress race no less.
Pop stars have long dominated the stage, captivating millions with their music. However, some megastars have proven they can conquer more than the Billboard charts. Take legendary artist Cher, for instance — the “Goddess of Pop” didn’t just give us hits like “Believe,” she also took home an Oscar for best actress for her unforgettable role as Italian widow and bookkeeper Loretta Castorini in the 1987 rom-com classic “Moonstruck.” That crossover has also come from other genre artists.

Todd Phillips’ 2019 Oscar-winning Joker did not release in China, but his sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, has been confirmed for October 16 in the market. Warner Bros’ and DC’s official Weibo accounts confirmed the date.
Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in early September, debuting to a 12-minute ovation. It will begin overseas rollout on October 2 and release domestically on October 4.
As with Phillips’ first Joker, this one is R-rated, but it passed China’s censors likely due to the less overtly violent nature of the film. The first movie also came amid pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong during which some adopted the character as a symbol. It’s not unprecedented for a U.S. R-rated movie to secure a China release, but it’s also not a given. Deadpool & Wolverine and Alien: Romulus have played the market this year,...

“Joker: Folie à Deux” filmmaker Todd Phillips is backpedaling on whether or not the supervillain sequel is a musical, admitting in a “Fresh Air” interview Monday that it is, in fact, “the very definition of a musical.”
“I’ve gotten a little bit in trouble in the past for, you know, kind of saying, ‘Well, the movie’s not really a musical.’ And I, for the record, probably should be correcting that,” the director and co-writer told Terry Gross after the journalist pressed him on if he was a fan of the genre.

The odds of Joker ever getting a sequel always seemed slim but, if and when one did happen, the hope was that it might pit Arthur Fleck against a Bruce Wayne who came seeking revenge as Batman.
An exploration of the Caped Crusader's mental health juxtaposed with Arthur's had the potential to be fascinating; instead, Joker: Folie à Deux will explore Joker's twisted relationship with Lee Quinzel, a.k.a. Harley Quinn, within the confines of Arkham Asylum.
Talking to IGN, filmmaker Todd Phillips revealed what he believes Arthur would think about the World's Greatest Detective.
"I think Arthur would be in awe of the alpha male that is Batman. I really do. I think Arthur would look up and appreciate it," he said. "I think he'd be in awe of that.”
"I think Arthur always had a fascination with men at ease, and he is not a man at ease.

If you’re gonna have someone like Lady Gaga star in your movie, it only makes sense to have her contribute, in some way, to the soundtrack. Indeed, when she did A Star is Born, Gaga received a Best Actress Oscar nomination, but she also won the award for her contribution to the soundtrack, “Shallow.” While Joker: Folie a Deux is being called a jukebox musical, in that most of the songs are covers of already existing tracks, Gaga has nonetheless recorded a ton of music inspired by the film and the character she plays (Harleen “Lee” Quinzel aka Harley Quinn), and now has announced a companion album called Harlequin, which is a pretty apropos title.
The singer made the announcement via Instagram.

Lady Gaga is taking Harley Quinn to the studio.
The Grammy and Oscar winner announced that she is releasing a “Joker: Folie à Deux” companion album inspired by her character and titled “Harlequin.” The album will be released on September 27 and features 13 songs.
Gaga teased the album, which will precede her upcoming seventh studio album dubbed “LG7,” by putting up billboards with number “6.5.” The implication is that “Harlequin” is not considered a full Lady Gaga studio album, and is instead a “half” installment before her seventh.
The track list for “Harlequin” includes renditions of famous hits such as “Oh, When the Saints,” “World on a String,” and “Smile.”
The full list is below:
1. Good Morning
2. Get Happy (2024)

Lady Gaga has announced Harlequin, a companion album to the upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux. The album is set for release this Friday, September 27th — one week before the movie will open in theaters worldwide on October 4th.
In the Todd Phillips-directed Joker: Folie à Deux, Gaga plays Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck / the Joker. The film has been described as a jukebox musical, featuring covers of jazz standards like “Get Happy,” “That’s Life,” “Oh, When the Saints,” and Frank Sinatra’s “I’ve Got the World On a String.” All of these songs are included on the tracklist for Gaga’s Harlequin, as are several originals.
Harlequin marks Gaga’s first new album since Chromatica in 2020. She previously announced plans to release an album of fully original material in 2025. On social media, Gaga is referring to Harlequin as LG6.5, distinguishing it from the 2025 release,...

Lady Gaga’s next album, Harlequin, will be a companion to Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie À Deux, which hits theaters Oct. 4.
The album will arrive Friday, Sept. 27. Gaga had been teasing her next album, LG7, for a while, and she dropped hints about the project along with her press schedule at Venice Film Festival. That could still be a separate album, as the first single for that work will arrive at some point in October after the film and ‘Harlequin’ have released.
Before she posted the album cover, which features Gaga with an inflatable live vest beneath a running shower head, Gaga posted five slides that tipped her followers off as to an announcement coming.
Written on the slides are “Still Not October,” “Moondust Gets Everywhere,” “No Ducttape No Mission,” “Don’t Tell Me What To Wear” and “I’m Ready For My Interview.” She also recently released “Die With...

That’s life! Lady Gaga will drop Harlequin, a companion album to Joker: Folie à Deux, out Sept. 27.
Harlequin will contain jazz standards like “Oh, When the Saints” (made famous by Louis Armstrong) and “Get Happy” (Judy Garland), and marks her first jazz release since the death of her collaborator Tony Bennett (the duo released 2014’s Cheek to Cheek and 2021’s Love for Sale). It’s a fitting companion to Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel, out Oct. 4, which is reported to be a jukebox musical.

It looks like there will be two Lady Gaga albums in the coming months.
The singer, who announced that she will be dropping the first single from her forthcoming seventh studio album next month, just announced “Harlequin,” a soundtrack album titled to the forthcoming film “Joker :Folie et Deux,” in which she stars with Joaquin Phoenix.
“Harlequin” will be released on Sept. 27 and feature 13 songs. In the lead up to the announcement, Gaga teased fans with posts to Instagram “I’m ready for my interview,” read one post, while another said: “Don’t tell me what to wear.” A third post, which was accompanied by the lone plucking of an acoustic guitar, read: “No duct tape. No mission.” She also teased the album earlier this week with billboards including the number “6.5,” which presumably means that she does not consider this a full Lady Gaga studio album, unlike the forthcoming one...
