Penguin had the potential to become one of the finest thrillers of Tamil cinema. But sometime after the first hour, the director decides to let everything go down the drain. Keerthy Suresh plays the character of a pregnant woman, grieving the loss of her first child and undergoing treatment to heal old scars. When her lost son comes back, a lot of problem follows her.
For the first one hour, everything was fine. The screenplay was gripping. The mystery around the serial killer was intriguing. Even though Keerthy Suresh keeps losing her son so many times, the events in the first hour were interesting. And then, everything went downhill.
Towards the end, when Keerthy Suresh manages to track down the killer, there is an intense scene where she is in the house of the killer. Unlike a normal human being who would have called the cops, she tries to poke around and manages to get herself caught by the killer. It is like the director decided that everyone from that point should behave like absolute idiots.
Even after the killer gets caught, Keerthy Suresh has a conversation with the killer which will remind you of the confrontation between Vikram and Vedha. The entire conversation between the killer and Keerthy Suresh felt like a rip-off of the conversation in The Silence of the Lambs. So at the end of the arduous conversation, Keerthy Suresh realizes who the real killer is and once again goes to the house of the killer without informing the cops about it.
Notwithstanding all these stupidities, there was a curiosity to find out the real reason behind the kidnapping of the boy. But when the killer finally reveals that, it felt laughably simple. Why would someone go to such lengths to avenge for something as simple as that? That was the point when I felt let down.
The music was amazing. Santhosh Narayanan tries to keep you on the edge and succeeds at that. The cinematography deserves a special mention. There are beautiful scenes of fog covered hills, lakes as still as glass and imposing forests. Over all, Penguin is definitely a disappointment.

Movie which had a potential of 10/10.

The post-production, direction, screenplay and story completely messed this up. Trailer was on another level but the movie didn't justify it. Music was fresh but unnecessary sometimes.
Felt like it was rushed without concluding plot-holes and committing to the story. Disappointed.
An experiment gone horribly wrong!

Warning: Spoilers
I usually don't write reviews. But this movie was one of the most frustrating films I've watched, so I had to write one. Ok, so they've set out to make a stylish slow boiling thriller. They accomplished half. The visuals are pleasing and they set the mood. But the plot? Its wafer thin. So many wasted characters who have nothing to do. Strange angles are presented but never explored. The whole point of the plot, which was of abducting a child, is left unexplored. And there are so many unexplained happenings. Here are some questions that are left lurking-
Why doesn't any one in the movie react to any abnormality?? What was that interval scene about? Everyone completely forgot about superhuman qualities post interval and why wasn't the kid taken to a psychologist for PTSD? He assaults a man with a weapon! Which mom will be so careless with a kid especially after finding him after 6 long yrs? half the movie seemed to validate the first husband's accusal. She amost always seemed to lose the kid! And what was that nonsense about sign language and late night rhymes? How did the kid start talking suddenly?
The guy who played Gautham - was he made of wax?? The whole plot was rubbish and the payoff was the silliest. And the dialogues! I'm almost sure some one with an emotional quotient of a sixth grader wrote this! In one scene a friend compares a breakup with a lost child to convince the mom to cheer up. That sums up the movie for me.

Warning: Spoilers
I was so so excited for it ever since the trailer dropped. But I'm so sorry, This has no story. None. No justified motivations behind the story. Only 3 stars are for visuals, cinematography is top notch. But it couldn't salvage the rest. The background score is added where it's not necessary, it's only noise/loud at times. Background is more pronounced in first half and quite blank during second half. Screenplay is disaster. Sound effect ( breaths/hmm/sighs) are so loud and added continuously to the point that it tires you, plus these 'breath' sounds are only of main protagonist, rhythm. So, it means that the other characters don't breathe? Whatever is shown is idiotic(organ trade, a single man job? & Only two kids missing? Question gameby Doc?, Why??? , He isn't even a significant character, why waste precious screen time? ) Go watch, waste your time and come back to this review. The most hilarious sequence is climax 'game' - the killer doc asks the question to the main protagonist, rhythm? - "how do you get this courage?" I mean what the hell? Movie attempts to be too many things at the same time....
Psychological? - fail.
Thriller? - boring.
Mystery? - there is none. You cannot create a killer without justifying his/her existence.
There are so many logical falls -
1. How did doc know that the kid responds to commands if he did not kidnap him?
2. How does doc knows all the answers?
3. How can you barge into a hospital, throw things around, kidnap kid and still guards are sleeping.
4. The final reveal is a joke. We all go through the experience of comparison with other children all our lives. We don't turn into killers.
5. Her(KIDNAPPER'S) husband somehow follows her to jungle? (Yea, right). How did she manage such an elaborate setup in jungle?
6. Dog is the go to detective in movie. If he can sniff so many things. Why did he not sniff in the first place when the kid was kidnapped eariler.
This is a mess. Save your time please.
This is a mess. Save your time please.
Does not deserve even 1 star.

The plot is about a pregnant mother still searching for her son kidnapped 6 years ago. It then gradually develops to finding the kidnapper and finally finding his motive. Keerthy Suresh was top notch in this film that has majority of the scenes involving only thrills, silence and gloom. The Director has explored something new like - psyche of a 6-years kidnapped child, depressed mother. Though, the last part of the film felt cinematic, it is definitely a good one worth watching from this Director!!
Sheer trash with senseless story line
rkrishna-3198019 June 2020
Utterly disappointing story line with needless histronics by Keerthy Suresh. Not sure how she fell prey to this dumb story unless desperation took its toll... it had everything in it ... excepting relevant story substance... the regular drone views of kodaikanal and its beautiful winding roads appear interesting, especially with bluish tinge to the lush greenery... story is spoilt... so not sharing any spoilers :) how can i actually give away to reveal true nature of her friend and a vile doctor ?? Doggie has a fairly good role and acting
A good thriller film of a pregnant woman

Rhythm leading a happy life and about to have her second child,is traumatized by the nightmares in which she sees umberlla man harming her lost son. She sets off on a dangerous journey, along with her trained dog, to unravel the secrets behind the nightmares and to protect her loved ones.
Despite a compelling lead performance from Keerthy Suresh, the storyline is too stupid to warrant a watch

Despite a compelling lead performance from National Award winner Keerthy Suresh, Penguin ends up being a dull watch due to a moronic storyline and direction that leaves you frustrated at every turn.
Imagine a mother losing her child to a kidnapping, leaving behind the same child on numerous occasions to search for the kidnapper, while pregnant. Thats how stupid the narrative is,
Avoid at all costs. Amazon Prime reaches 3/3 with their slew of direct-to-digital releases with Ponmagal Vandhal, Gulabo Sitabo and now Penguin ending up as damp squibs.
Disappointing to see such highly anticipated movies bite the dust like this.

Penguin goes through micro speed and expects you to have macro patience.
Keerthi Suresh's character: Stupidity written all over. The prime sense of motherhood / especially during pregnancy is all about protecting the child. It goes through the roof. I forgot the count of times that Keerthy's character as a mother left the elder kid unattended and then searching for it. Doing all crazy things that no pregnant woman would do.
Dialogues: It demonstrates the lack of life experience of the director. Not relevant most times
Cinematography: No big complaint's there
Music: I don't think Santhosh Narayanan understood the mood and tone to be portrayed. It's a classic conflict that destroys the complete movie. I don't know how the director wants to walk us through but Santosh's music taking us through a different genre (Unfortunately not good)
In essence, there is no cohesion in delivering this project. Is this a psych killer, revenge drama, strong willed mother story or new age dark themed tech thriller??
Absolutely incompetent for a theatrical release. Pretentious and insincere acting all through. A loosely conceived, poorly designed, incorrectly executed, not so genuine bogus thriller.

After watching "Prisoners" last week and followed by watching the trailer of "Penguin" i had the opinion, some Indian movie will match Prisoners, coz i felt story line would have been the same.
The story writer may have picked up all the points from different movies and made at a mish-mash of it .....and loo and behold ....we have Penguine.
Feeling very sorry for talented Keerthy Suresh for picking up this movie.
The director wants to trigger sympathy out the charcter of Rhythm making her to in be advanced pregnancy ....but he fails miserable to evoke the feeling of mother hood - she goes on at length to look for her son for years. Her divorce - missing child - pregnancy failed to bring empathy to her character.
Story falls tooooooooo flat , to many loose ends, the characters jumping in - to say - - im fooling you. No essence in their act.
Please keep away from this. I like to thank the director only for one reason ...for keeping it just for little over two hours.

Failed direction
siyasingh-4088928 June 2020
This movie stands as a perfect example for failed direction. It started off well but eventually in an attempt to make it feminocentric, director ended up ruining the plot. There are numerous loop holes throughout the movie. By the end nearing, you will be left befuddled wondering how this heavily pregnant lady is managing all of this without taking help of people available right next to her.
So people you don't have to waste your time on this!
Dumb movie

Feel Good Movie - OTW (One Time Watch)
ashwinputhucode19 June 2020
I don't want to be a spoiler so just writing small details and errors in the movie. The movie is just a feel good one. In some scenes, the dubbing does not sync well. Casting is not so good except the lead Keerthi Suresh. Do not put your expectation so high before watching, if done so you will be disappointed. The storyline can be made more interesting. If you watch the movie carefully, you can plot the suspense in the movie after the halftime itself. I sense there is a bit of error from the direction end as almost all the frames are moreover like a common movie. BGM part is done well but have to admit that they do not sync well with the scenes. Songs are good, don't have any problem with those. Editing can be better.
Wrapping all these, Penguin a feel good OTW movie.

Excellent Movie. Everybody acted very well in the movie. Song in the movie was not needed since it is a thriller movie. BGM was excellent. The movie was so interesting and thrilling. This is one of the Best Tamil Movie of 2020 and Best Tamil Thriller Movies. Excellent Movie.
Good movie

Starts and end with a good note, but the movie looses it track in middle, especially with the doctor's game scene.
Villian could have been created with much more importance.
It turned out to be another crime movie. There are many similar tamil movie with same story line.
Everyone unanimously agreed that this is garbage.
BlackJack_8821 June 2020
Director said that this movie glorifies motherhood. Never have I seen such a careless mother who lands in multiple situation where the child can be easily walked away by a kidnapper, but thanks to the brilliant director who had equally dumb story and characters as him. The casting makes one puke. Hope there was no audition or screen-test for this movie. Madhampatty Rangaraj and Linga, both looked liked clowns with no expressions. Casting them as Keerthy's partner tells you that there is a serious problem in the director's vision. Seeing them on screen was abhorrent. Except camera everything is the movie was disgusting including BGM by Santhosh Narayanan. That being said I have one last question to the director.
"Bro how did you even manage to get a producer for this rubbish?"
Why did I waste 2 hours?
