Typical Netflix movie
Mortuus13494 July 2022
The Netflix's movie recipe is always the same :
  • big name actors
  • whatever story
  • weak director
  • watch once and forget
  • good action
  • flat jokes
  • cheap FX
  • good Sunday afternoon movie.

Hilarious mindless entertainment.
Top_Dawg_Critic26 June 2022
It's what I expected, and it's exactly what I got. This was a well written, directed and perfectly performed film. The chemistry between Hart and Harrelson was spot-on and hilarious. Not sure what everyone was expecting, but we all enjoyed it and laughed hard. A recommend for sure if you're a fan of either, especially both stars. A well deserved 8/10 from me.

Another Kevin Hart movie
stijnmeersman24 June 2022
Have you ever seen any Kevin Hart movie? If yes, you'll know this one. It's just Kevin Hart being Kevin Hart. It's a decently fun action comedy. It's a perfect light watch and you'll barely remember it by next week.

Shocker! people hating on another Netflix movie
nathanmanson25 June 2022
It's honestly a really enjoyable film, I say it every time i review a Netflix film but people just hate on them for no reason. People have a serious vendetta against Netflix films and it shows.

With this film you get what it says on the tin 'action comedy'. There's plenty of action so they can't complain about that. It's also funny so they can't complain about that. So what's the problem? Yes the CGI at times was a little poor but that doesn't lower the enjoyment of the film.

Woody was in his element with that role, it was perfect for him. Kevin hart doing what he does best with making you laugh. It's a really enjoyable film. People just expect every film nowadays to be a bit budget marvel movie and when they don't get that they're disappointed, it's sad.

Woody is in his element
geekoutmetal24 June 2022
Like in Zombieland.

I really enjoyed this one.

Good popcorn fun.

Kevin was annoying at times but thats on the 'Kevin Hart vehicle' bit, so you just have to ignore it.

But, definitely worth a watch better than most out right now.

Seems the older actio/comedy films are starting to get back to basics.

Kevin Hart at his most annoying in a movie with no story
siderite27 June 2022
Was Kevin Hart ever funny? Because I can't remember a single moment when he was. And now he has created this "actor" persona which does the same thing in every movie: talking non stop in a whiny voice and pointing the obvious like it would be amusing. But it's just not.

So in this clone of clones assassin buddy comedy film, Kevin Hart is an annoying idiot and Harrelson is a top notch assassin. And that could have been somewhat interesting, or captivating, or funny, but it just wasn't. The movie was simply awkward, a stain on Woody's career and, worst of all, plain boring.

Avoid this like the plague.

The Man from Toronto

Maybe lower your sights a little bit and enjoy some good, campy fun. Woody Harrelson and Kevin Hart together in a buddy comedy.

Oh, and never run out of printer toner. You have been warned.

Unfunny comedy, unlikeable characters and dull plot
sumtim3s00n24 June 2022
Sometimes these switch role movies work out great, with a good script writer and chemistry between leads. This flick however, there is absolutely ZERO chemistry between them, the characters arent even the tiniest bit likeable and the story drags on and is boring despite lots of (forced) action. Actually the characters not are only not likeable, Hart is extremely annoying to the point you wish to stop watching the movie. Not to mention the guy plays EXACTLY the same role he always plays (which sometimes does work) to varying degrees of stupid1ty. Here it is dialed up to 10 and his behaviour comes of so obnoxiously dumb it is too unrealistic even for a comedy film.

Just in general a dull, unfunny film with obnoxious characters and a plot that drags on rather than takes you on a fun, entertaining adventure.

PASS.

Bad Comedy, Bad Effects
johnnyhbtvs2724 June 2022
Kevin Hart can be hit and miss at the best of times but The Man From Toronto is a real letdown. It isn't funny at all and barely raises a chuckle. Harrelson & Hart have no chemistry and Harrelson is just playing the role exactly the way Jason Statham would have (Statham was originally cast) and not bringing anything to the part.

The biggest problem however is a strange one. For a rumoured 75 million budget, this contains some of the worst CGI i've seen in years. From ridiculous fake looking explosions (and there are many) to the weirdest looking grass on record, The Man From Toronto should be a candidate for worst effects. It's becoming a bit of a pattern for Netflix original movies to have very shoddy effects.

pretty enjoyable
thewalkingpuns25 June 2022
This was a really enjoyable action flick. I felt that hart and harrelson worked well together and the mix between action and comedy worked well. Some good action scenes that seemed to be the same stunt coordinator as kingsman. The plot was pretty good and flowed well. With some unexpected moments. Altogether an enjoyable action flick. And if you like either kevin hart or woody harrelson, you'll enjoy this movie.

It gives you exactly what you wanted.
iwfriesen24 June 2022
I was reading through a few reviews that marked this movie as terrible.

What are they expecting from a movie like this? Shakespeare? This is action comedy! And what does it not provide for you in that genre. Kevin Hart is being just like Kevin Hart. That's what people want when they select a show like this. Woody Harrelson did an excellent job of his standardized villain persona.

All movies are not on the same level, but for the level this one is on, I think they did a good job. Even "actors" have to make money.

Generic with a capital G! [+34%]
arungeorge1324 June 2022
It's the same schlocky-actioner premise where a plain vanilla guy's life gets entangled with that of an assassin's, and their subsequent, foreseeable transformations. If the poster doesn't give you hints of what kind of a film this is, then the director's name (Patrick Hughes, who made The Hitman's Bodyguard and the PG-13 part III of The Expendables) certainly will. The roles don't challenge either Hart or Harrelson, as they've done this way too many times. The humor is sparse, and surprisingly enough, the action itself isn't all that exciting, save for a spontaneous set-piece that takes place inside a gym. The ladies (including the talented Kaley Cuoco) are wasted in inconsequential roles. What really surprises me is the PG-13 rating with all the faux-violence. The Man From Toronto is just another Netflix entry that'll be forgotten in a week or two!

Occasionally Funny, Usually Entertaining, But the Duo is Terrible
Zac_La_Porte25 June 2022
Especially for the "duo we never knew we needed", Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson just don't work well together. Hart is a natural comedian, and he fits the role as a failing screw-up in New York City. Harrelson is typically quite serious in the film, but he does work finely in the comedy genre. Unfortunately, it's a pretty weak story with the usual cinematography, action and themes you'd get in a Netflix movie.

The Man From Toronto is a buddy action-comedy presented to Netflix by Patrick Hughes, the same person who directed the hilarious action-duo movies The Hitman's Bodyguard and Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard. And it goes from the director to the stars who have done excellent team-up movies, including Kevin Hart from buddy movies like Get Hard and Woody Harrelson from team movies like Zombieland and Zombieland: Double Tap.

But although those and other duos, teams and groups of protagonists function very enjoyably and usually offer a handful of good laughs, Hart and Harrelson just don't work well together. It's because they're just not fun enough and their interactions with each other aren't original or in any way thoughtful. They both have funny lines, but the film is just an overall flop.

Do Yourself a Favor, Believe the Low Score Here and Find Something Else
leftbanker-125 June 2022
Spoiler Alert! Another movie that is completely revealed in the trailer. So why bother with the film? There's nothing funny in this, just ridiculous fights scenes like an episode of Itchy and Scratchy but without the wit. I defy anyone who thought this was funny to repeat a single funny line from the film.

Once again, written by people who probably do nothing but watch movies and TV. Note to writers: try reading books and maybe your scripts won't be exactly like the last twenty movies you watched. The entire premise was just about as stupid as movies can be, and then it went downhill fast. Even the name is dumb and pointless.

it's not funny
SnoopyStyle27 June 2022
Teddy Jackson (Kevin Hart) is a screw up but he tries. He gets fired. He tries to give his wife Lori (Jasmine Mathews) a fancy anniversary getaway. He walks into the wrong house and gets mistaken for an assassin known as the Man from Toronto (Woody Harrelson). The FBI busts in and arrests him. It's obvious that he's not the Man from Toronto but the FBI needs him to play along pretending to be him. Soon enough, he meets up with the real Man.

Kevin Hart is doing his Kevin Hart thing. For some reason, it doesn't feel funny. I don't mind pairing him with Harrelson in theory. It just doesn't feel funny. Director Patrick Hughes did the The Hitman's Bodyguard and Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard. I get the jokes but they feel lacking. First of all, I would pick a different city other than Toronto. Toronto is not actually a funny sounding city. They could have done something about the local pronunciation of Toronto but even that would get tiresome quickly. Since they're filming this in and around Toronto, maybe it should be The Man from New York. In essence, the Toronto thing encapsulates the struggle for humor in this movie. This thinks that Toronto is a funny concept but it's not. It thinks that this movie is funny but it's not.

I'm glad Jason Statham walked out...
darkwizard40425 June 2022
It tries very hard to be funny but fails miserably. Lots of cringe moments and pathetic jokes which were unfunny and overdone. Kevin Hart pretty much plays himself in every movie. Makes me cringe. Some over the top action and horrible acting overall. Woody Harrelson's character could have been much better. Poor direction and as a man from Toronto, I didn't enjoy this movie at all. I'm glad Jason Statham walked out. This movie would have been a massive waste of his talent.

One of the dumbest movies I've seen in years
FeastMode19 November 2022
I like Kevin Hart. I like Woody Harrelson. I'm starved for a good comedy since they seem to be going extinct. I don't mind a poorly made movie if it makes me laugh. The point I'm trying to make is, it should have been extremely easy for me to like this movie. And yet I despise it.

I can't count how many times I've ripped on the trash movies that Netflix pumps out. The vast majority feel inferior all around. The Man from Toronto is the Netflix-iest one of all. Every aspect feels like streaming quality garbage.

The story is awful. The dialogue is terrible. The action is mind-numbing and poorly done. The emotional moments are laughable. Nothing works. The amount of idiotic things that happen, things that make you literally shake your head or face-palm... it legit made my jaw drop more than once. Things happen in the story that make you throw your hands up in exasperation. Nothing makes logical sense. It's insulting.

All of that could be overlooked if it made me laugh. I chuckled a few times, smiled a few times, and was deadpan face for 95% of the humor. To reiterate, I've always found Kevin Hart funny. How can you fail this hard?

And are we really going back to the useless girlfriend character who's entire happiness depends on buying her things? It's just weak, like everything else in this movie. Netflix... why are you so terrible at making movies. I'll never understand. (1 viewing, 11/19/2022)

Now I know what Netflix did with my subscription money.
gnatsong25 June 2022
It spent that whole pile of cash on the script for this absolute mess, wasting the talents of some pretty good actors. This was awful. It wasn't funny. There was no charisma between actors. The plot was stupid. And I was stupid for actually watching a whole half hour of this before giving up.

Written and directed by AI?
ohroonoko27 June 2022
This movie was written and directed by AI, or it seems that way; it's soulless and shallow. Everyone involved completely phoned it in. Kevin Hart, Woody Harrelson and Kaley Cuoco aren't the least bit funny without a good script, they're nothing more than hams, and a bad script and poor directing only exposes them. The plot is a mess, the romantic subplot is a failure, and the business dream subplot is unrewarding. The film student action scenes and iPhone cinematography styles are a patchwork of gags ripped from much better films and far better directors of the past 20 years. Solid SKIP.

The Men who wasted my time
ThereelscoopwithKK9 July 2022
There isn't much to like here. It fails terribly both as a thriller and a comedy. Shocked Harrelson would even involve himself with this kind of production. The fact someone pitched a story that used ink toner to drive the plot and it was approved and made into a movie is pitiful.

Even Kevin Harts' act, which although repetitive is often entertaining in other films, falls short with Harrelson. There really isn't any chemistry there and feels clunky.

Avoid if you can.

This Man Needs A Hart Transplant
UltraMaximal25 June 2022
Woody is fine, Kelly Cocopuffs is and has always been marginal. Hart is just horrible. His talent is very, very, limited at best. He belongs on a stage, in the dark with a drunk audience. That's it. That's his calling in life and Hollywood needs to accept that.

As for the rest? Direction is poor, writing is abysmal and pacing is just a mess. The whole film plays like someone screamed puppy at a day care. Erratic, noisy, chaotic, pointless.

Moderately amusing comedy-thriller than needed more grittiness
Tweekums26 June 2022
Randy, AKA 'The Man from Toronto', is an expert at getting information from people who don't want to talk; his next job entails going to a house in rural Virginia to question a man. Teddy Jackson is a man with many ideas, most of them poor, one weekend he takes his wife to rural Virginia. Thanks to an unreadable printout he goes to the wrong address and is mistaken for Randy. Somehow he survives but when the house is raided by the FBI he is told that he will have to continue pretending to be Randy to help uncover a plot. This will see him forming an unlikely partnership with the real Man from Toronto.

I thought this film was okay; it provided a decent number of laughs and some reasonably exciting moments... unfortunately it lacked any genuinely hilarious moments and lacked a sense of danger. The special effects are also somewhat weak. The story was solid enough; it is just a pity it wasn't grittier; I wasn't surprised to learn Jason Statham had pulled out of the role of Randy due to disagreements about the tone and rating of the film... he would have been great in this if the film had been a 'UK15' rating. As it was Woody Harrelson was good in the role but lacked the menace the higher rating would allow. Kevin Hart is okay as Teddy; at times amusing but occasionally a little irritating. Overall I thought it passed to time well enough; hardly a must see but I'd recommend it to anybody wanting action that is suitable for younger viewers or the easily offended.

This movie would have been tolerable without Kevin Hart.
kegebler10 July 2022
Was they're even a script for this movie. The premise is not bad and I really like Woody Harrelson as an actor. However it seems like Kevin Hart just showed up whenever he wanted and spouted off the most ridiculous annoying ad-lib ever. Please would you try acting for a change Kevin Hart. I believe anybody else in this role would have done better. Like a Jonah Hill or Michael Cera.
