The international trend begun by “Parasite” in 2020 continues. On Oscar nominations morning, Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” (Netflix) was expected to lead the nominations, and did not disappoint, with a record 13 chances to win an Oscar on March 2.

Almost 10,000 Academy voters are invited to cast their ballots from February 11 – 18, and some twenty per cent of those voters live overseas. Both France’s Spanish-language “Emilia Pérez” and Brazil’s Portuguese “I’m Still Here” (Sony Pictures Classics) landed in Best Picture and scored at least one acting nod, along with the expected Best International Feature Film.

“Emilia Pérez,” about a Mexican drug cartel boss who transitions to being a woman, is now positioned to win multiple Oscars. Spanish actress Karla Sofia Gascón and New Jersey-born Zoe Saldaña scored acting nominations, and Saldaña is expected to win Supporting Actress. The 2025 Oscar nominations saw a number of big names and Oscar favorites (Angelina Jolie, Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Luca Guadagnino and the rest of the Challengers team) miss out on recognition this year.

Indeed, Challengers — despite being in the awards conversation all season, with Golden Globe nominations for the film and star Zendaya and a Globe win for best score for Oscar faves Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross — failed to receive a single Oscar nomination on Thursday morning.

Challengers director Luca Guadagnino also saw his other awards hopeful film, the Daniel Craig starrer Queer, fail to receive any nominations, including for Craig, who was seen as a possible best actor nominee though he was notably snubbed by the BAFTAs.

Also snubbed by the BAFTAs but still was a possible nominee was two-time Oscar winner Washington, who was left out of the best supporting actor category for his work in Gladiator II,...

Not everybody’s a winner — and some, shockingly, aren’t even contenders. Cynthia Erivo made Oscar history on Thursday morning with her Best Actress bid for Wicked. She is now only the second Black female performer to receive multiple bids in this category, after Viola Davis.

Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West, in director Jon M. Chu‘s big-budget adaptation of the beloved Broadway stage musical. Wicked actually marks her second Best Actress mention after Harriet (2019), for which she also earned a Best Song bid for “Stand Up” (cowritten with Joshuah Brian Campbell). Whoever is 100 percent certain about their Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination predictions is lying. The precursors have been way too all over the place to provide any certainty. Sometimes “Emilia Pérez” star Selena Gomez makes the cut, sometimes she doesn’t. Just when things finally look up for Monica Barbaro, earning a SAG Award nomination for her performance as Joan Baez in “A Complete Unknown,” she does not make the cut at BAFTA Awards, even though that group has six nomination slots.

In the year without a frontrunner, the doors are still wide open. I’m predicting three films will tie for the most nominations with 10 each: “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked.”

Jacques Audiard’s crime musical “Emilia Pérez” is poised to dominate, and if it can tack on a tech nom or two, the Netflix film could become the most nominated non-English-language film in history, surpassing “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) and “Roma” (2018). The streamer’s primary awards pony could potentially go even further. On an ideal nomination day, if it lands nods in all of its “on the bubble” categories — such as cinematography, sound, and two extra bids for supporting actress (Selena Gomez) and original song — it could secure 14 nominations, tying with “All About Eve” (1950), “Titanic” (1997), and “La La Land” (2016) as the most-nominated films of all time. Notably, “La La Land,” also a musical, is the only one to lose the best picture.

Much metephorical ink has been spilled here and across the web about this year’s Best Actress Oscar race. How fun for it to be so up in the air, even though it makes the job of prognositcating all the more harder.

Ultimately, while almost all of the women listed on the frontrunners and contenders list did work objectively worthy of the nominations they have already received, the contenders that seem most likely to get a nomination are the ones where you could make the strongest case they could win.

With the 2025 Oscar nominations days away, no other category is more difficult to predict than Best Actress. This race has been consistently fluid as new contenders pick up steam, and the expected lineup today looks vastly different from July, when Gold Derby opened our Oscars predictions. Brazilian historical drama I’m Still Here starring Golden Globe winner Fernanda Torres debuted to an excellent $25,082 per-screen average in a low-grossing Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend at the US box office.

Released through Sony Pictures Classics, Walter Salles’ drama about a matriarch whose husband disappears during the Brazilian dictatorship in 1970 earned $125,409 on five screens, rising to a $153,078 running total.

Disney reported that Mufasa: The Lion King is projected to gross $15.5m over four days and will stand at $209.8m after five weekends.

That would see it reclaim number one in its fifth weekend, ahead ofSony/TriStar’s female-led R-rated comedy One Of Them Days,...

This is discouraging. Despite a better than expected showing by “One of Them Days” (Sony), with $11.6 million in three days for the $14 million, Issa Rae-produced R-rated comedy, this was a pathetic box office for a weekend ahead of MLK Day.

The mid-January holiday usually kickstarts the new year, with grosses pre-Covid usually $150 million total or higher at lower ticket prices. This year? Around $77 million. That’s lower than any year unadjusted for inflation this century, with attendance totals about half of the standard before 2021.

It wouldn’t have helped a lot, but “Wolf Man,” meant to build on the Universal Monsters reboot started by “The Invisible Man” five years ago, with $10.5 million came in substantially below its expected opening of up to $20 million.

Also hurting was the delay in Oscar nominations, originally scheduled for last Friday, now delayed a week.

For seasoned awards pundits, predicting the Oscars has always involved careful calculations, heated debates, and whispered, off-the-record conversations with Academy voters. These chats, typically brimming with insider insights and candid opinions, took on a different tone this year. Many pundits hesitated to reach out in the wake of wildfires that devastated parts of Los Angeles.

The wildfires currently raging in Los Angeles, California have caused unprecedented destruction since they first kicked up on January 7, 2025. A little over a week later, the CalFire website says that, to date, 24 people have died, 40,660 acres have burned, and over 12,300 structures have been destroyed. Residents of the city are in both shock and mourning as they face an uncertain future of rebuilding and further calamity -- because these fires are still not fully contained, and new fires could start at any moment.

In the midst of all of this, the film industry to which the city has been home for over a century is wearily moving forward. Movies must be made, released and promoted to ensure that this awful start to 2025 isn't compounded by a significant box office decline. It's a terrible necessity. But are the Oscars a necessity?

Conclave emerged the favorite among the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards voters, scoring 12 nominations including Best Film, Director, Leading Actor, and Supporting Actress. Emilia Pérez was close behind with 11 nominations, followed by The Brutalist with nine and Anora, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked with seven.

Overall, 42 films earned BAFTA Film Awards nominations, and 14 of the 24 performance nominees are BAFTA Awards first-timers.

This afternoon, Will Sharpe and Mia McKenna-Bruce announced the list of lucky nominees for 2025’s Ee BAFTA Awards.

This year nominations see 12 nominations for ‘Conclave,’ 11 nominations for ‘Emilia Pérez,’ While ‘The Brutalist’ received 9 nominations. 7 nominations for ‘Anora,’ ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Wicked.’

14 out of 24 nominees in the performance categories have received their first BAFTA Film nomination, including Yura Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Ariana Grande (Wicked), Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez), Clarence Maclin (Sing Sing), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez), Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice).

The Ee BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will once again be held at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in central London, and broadcast on Sunday 16 February 2025 on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK.

Roll up, awards buffs: shiny trophy season is hotting up, with BAFTA having announced its nominees for this year’s ceremony. And fittingly, it seems BAFTA members might have gathered in robes to submit their votes on little white slips of paper: papal thriller Conclave is the most-nominated film this year, receiving 12 nods including Best Film, Director for Edward Berger, Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Adapted Screenplay and more. Send up the white smoke, people.

Hot on Conclave’s heels is Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s genre-defying crime-thriller-musical-character-drama, in which a cartel boss undergoes gender-reassignment surgery to begin her new life. The film is nominated in 11 categories. Audiard is nominated for Director, while the film itself is up for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Film Not In The English Language. Emilia herself, Karla Sofía Gascón, is up for Leading Actress, with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña...

The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in, and Netflix’s Emilia Pérez is among the films leading the way with 11 nods, just behind Black Bear’s Vatican drama Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, with 12. In the animated and kids area, Netflix’s Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl was also one of the top nominations earners with three.

But it was a different name that topped a list of most-nominated studios/distributors, provided by BAFTA on Wednesday: Universal Pictures and Focus Features, which scored noms for the likes of Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, Jn M. Chu’s Wicked, Sean Baker’s Anora, and Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu.

Smaller and emerging players also feature on the list of companies whose movies are in BAFTA contention.

Leading the crop of nominees are “Conclave” with 12, “Emilia Pérez” with 11, and “The Brutalist” with nine. “Anora,” “Dune: Part Two,” and “Wicked” all received seven nominations, even though “Wicked” was shut out from the Best Film category. The BAFTA Film Awards nominations were revealed this afternoon in London, with a mix of titles from studios (and their specialty labels), indies and streamers spread out across the field again this year. All nominations are led by Edward Berger’s Conclave which scored 12 total. In the UK, the papal election thriller is released by Black Bear which nabbed a total 15 nods (including three for Sing Sing). Conclave is a Focus title in North America. Combined, Focus and parent studio Universal landed a leading 32 nominations as distributor for such movies as The Brutalist (nine), Anora (seven), Wicked (seven), Nosferatu (five), The Wild Robot (three) and Monkey Man (one).

The 2025 BAFTA Film nominees were announced this morning but there was no recognition for high profile movies such as Queer, Challengers, Babygirl, and Paddington In Peru. Meanwhile, musical Wicked was shut out of the Best Film category.

Luca Guadagnino’s duo Queer and Challengers were both Golden Globe nominated, including for leads Daniel Craig and Zendaya, but neither made the cut this morning. Both had made the BAFTA longlist.

Nicole Kidman won a best actress award at Venice and was also Golden Globe nominated but couldn’t woo the BAFTA crowd for her performance in steamy drama Babygirl.

Fresh from making Golden Globes history, Karla Sofía Gascón has now become the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for a BAFTA Film Award.

The Spanish performer has been recognized in the Leading Actress category for her role in Emilia Pérez, in which she stars as a Mexican drug kingpin who transitions into a woman.

Gascón will compete for the BAFTA prize alongside five other nominees: Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun), Demi Moore (The Substance), Mikey Madison (Anora), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked).

Peppiatt himself became the most nominated debut director ever with 4 nods, just ahead of Billy Elliot‘s Stephen Daldry (3).

The Irish hip-hop “print the legend” biopic on the Belfast-based rap trio — boasting Michael Fassbender among its ensemble — scored six nominations overall on Wednesday, including for outstanding British film, outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer and best casting for Carla Stronge.

A24’s The Brutalist busted out in limited expansion this weekend with close to $1.39 million on just 68 screens, a $20.4k per screen average, excellent for a period film with a three hour and 35-minute run time about a Hungarian architect in 1950s Doylestown, Pa. It won multiple Golden Globes — for Best Picture – Drama, Best Actor for Adrien Brody and Best Director — last Sunday.

This is another fine indie weekend as Hard Truths by iconic filmmaker Mike Leigh saw $165k at 22 theaters, a strong opening, despite severe weather in the south and the ongoing fire crisis in LA.

The Last Showgirl rounded out the top 10 on its debut weekend.

Holdovers Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown and Babygirl are at nos. 4, 6 and 8 respectively.

Indie distributors are now wondering if arthouses that gravitated to wide-release studios films since Covid may want to rethink.
